- "The hotel is located centrally. Being an older property, the staircase is windy and steep. May not be suitable for persons with difficulty ascending stairs (no lift). Our room was located in the attic. When we arrived, we were disappointed because the heating was not on (3 degrees outside) and when they put on the heating it did not work. It took a while to sort out because the waitress from the bar was dealing with the reception as well (26th Dec). We were provided with another heater which was perfect. In the end our 2 night stay was very comfortable. Breakfast was very delicious (freshly made cooked breakfast plus cereals/fruit etc). Ample parking was available in front of the hotel. Due to the time of year, it was noisy after midnight outside on the first night. The room included an electric shower (new), tea/coffee facilities, kettle etc. "

Easy to get to lots of pretty towns and estates by car, with dog walks on the doorstep. Occasional traffic noise in the main room - but you'd expect a blacksmith to be near a road - and the bedrooms are quiet. Very enthusiastic and welcoming property manager. Thoughtful welcome package for us and the dog, including dog towels that came in very handy. Gail was brilliant keeping in touch after we left and returning a scarf I had forgotten. Good internet access at the cottage. Some mobile signal issues indoors, as might be expected in a stone-built property. We didn't find this impaired our holiday. The large main room was great for cooking, eating and socialising as a family and I appreciated the very well-organised kitchen drawers. Overall a great place to stay."

A former dairy building, our cottage has been lovingly upgraded to provide spacious accommodation described by recent guests as 'a hidden gem'. With its own private garden, glorious walks from the front door and high quality furnishings it really is a 'sublime hideaway' (as described by another recent guest). Wine and other little treats greet your arrival. Suitable for couples and dogs welcome. Further info: The cottage has been lovingly converted from a former stable building. We take pride in how beautiful it is looking. Dogs are welcome but must not sit on the furniture and the guests must treat the property with due respect. A total of 2 adults + 1 other occupants (bearing in mind that the extra bed is a 5ft sofa bed) is the maximum number of guests at one time. The property is a No Smoking property. There is however outdoor furniture provided and an attractive terrace area where this is permitted.
There will be plenty of gas supplied for hot water and heating (gas bottles safely stored to rear of property). Sometimes the boiler has difficulty drawing in a new supply but do not worry if this happens. Please turn the hot water tap on in the bathroom, light a gas hob in the kitchen, wait for 30 seconds and then simply press the ignite (🔥) button on the boiler which is in the bathroom cupboard.
There is a WiFi password provided for fast WiFi. This is required for WhatsApp calling. There is no mobile reception at the property itself but the WiFi ensures you can call and message at all times.

There are many local walks and cycle routes where you are unlikely to meet anyone due to the lack of people. Or sit and relax while admiring the wonderful rural views and amazing birds in your cottage garden.
You'll be warm whatever the weather is doing outside. Central heating throughout is supplemented by a log burner in the living room. We provide plenty of homegrown wood. If requested we can light your fire ready for your arrival.
The bedroom has an extra-long, king size bed. If requested, we can provide an additional bed or travel cot, either in the bedroom or in the living room. please ask. Thairn cottage is pet-free.

In the hills, there are plenty of tracks and the Glentress Forest provides extensive cycle tracks which are separate from the walking paths (mountain bikes can be hired at the main entrance to the forest). Horse riding is a very popular past time in the Scottish Borders, as is fishing and golf, with numerous courses within easy reach of Burnbrae. There is a riding stables next door. The Scottish Borders also has a wealth of culture and history and many beautiful gardens and historic properties to visit. Floors Castle and Mellerstain House and Kelso racecourse are only 3 miles away.

Set in the foothills of the Cheviot hills and on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, Gypsy Palace is an unusual self catering cottage with a fascinating history. Situated in the Scottish Borders at the most northerly point of the Pennine Way, the small village of Kirk Yetholm has been regarded as the home of the gypsies of Scotland and Northern England for over 300 years; Gypsy Palace is famous the world over as the royal residence of both Queen Esther and her son and heir, King Charles Faa Blythe. It is said that Queen Esther became very popular receiving the gentry from far and wide who visited especially to hear her words of wisdom, We have no idea how old the cottage is but records mention its existence back in the early 1800's.
The Palace can sleep up to four people, though its small size means its more suited to couples or small families. It is perfect for exploring both the Scottish Borders with its stunning moors and quaint market towns, and Northumberland with its spectacular beaches and many castles. Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose, Holy Island, Alnwick and historic Berwick upon Tweed are all just a short drive away short drive.

Converted in 2019 by the owners to a very good standard, Grooms Bothy is the perfect place for couples or a family to enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle. Formed over two levels of a former stable building, the house has two bedrooms sleeping four comfortably. The ground floor is mostly open plan with a living room, breakfast area and kitchen. The modern efficient wood burner is a lovely feature, especially on those chilly evenings. Lastly the spacious shower room is on the ground floor and the underfloor heating is a nice touch.

Grooms Bothy sits next to, and on the site of, the former Nenthorn manse. The grounds extend to 8 acres and is used as an equestrian facility. For a small fee, stabling and use of the facilities could be organised for someone wishing to travel with their own horse(s). The surrounding countryside is arguably some of the most beautiful in the country and we would encourage some exploring around the Scottish Borders. Why not visit the market town of Kelso with wide cobbled streets, ancient market Bull Ring and abbey ruins. A short drive away near Berwick-upon-Tweed, you will find the National Trust Paxton House, and also nearby is Coldingham beach. Shop 4 miles. Pub and restaurant 4 miles.
