England’s oldest hotel (from 1220) in England’s first capital offers quintessentially English service and hospitality. Experience levels of service that you would find hard to better anywhere in England. The highly rated Old Bell, reputed to be England's oldest purpose-built hotel, is adjacent to the famous Abbey in the historic town of Malmesbury, on the edge of the Cotswolds, 5 miles from Junction 17 of the M4 motorway and near Chippenham. The Old Bell is steeped in character with log fires, paintings, stone-walls and period furniture. The bedrooms are individually furnished: those in the main house are more period in character, some with beams and fireplaces; those in the Coach House have a light and airy feel to them.

- "Gorgeous old coachingi inn in Malmesbury. We arrived nearly 2 hours early but no issues, a room was available. And I must lovely service from the lady at reception. We stayed in the old stables so room out back which was super quiet, very comfortable and good size. Nespresso in the room and they happened to have my favourite capsules "Cape Town Enviro". One suggestion would be to only have bathtowels, eapecially for overnight visitors Id suggest two towels each not needed. Lovely stay. "

- "The cottage was beautifully decorated, it has everything you need. Lovely bed linen and comfortable bed, we had a wonderful break, the only issue was the cleanliness, lots of cobwebs and spiders in most corners and we found wood lice along the skirting boards. Given we couldn’t access the cottage until 5pm that’s long enough to thoroughly clean the place." - "We managed to book the beautiful Lily Bee cottage last minute, and very grateful it was available! It was situated in the best location, between villages and towns which were under 30 minutes away. The village itself has much to offer between cafes, pubs and a CO-OP for essentials! The cottage has been decorated to a very high standard, it’s absolutely gorgeous! The garden is wonderful, we enjoyed soaking up the summer weather whilst the doggos enjoyed running around the enclosed garden (added bonus for us doggo lovers). Thank you for our stay!"

There were a great many activities for older children too so we’ll have to come back." - "Amazing property, beautifully furnished, excellent facilities for children, wonderful location, would definitely stay here again."

The Leat at Wynyard Mill is a unique riverside retreat with enviable views across the rooftops of Malmesbury. Part of a 19th century mill this quirky holiday cottage is perfect for leaving the car behind and exploring on foot.
Take a break for some rest and relaxation, spending time in the elegant open plan living area on the top floor. Beneath the beamed apex this is a lovely space where you can put your feet up after a day spent exploring the historic attractions. Preparing meals is easy in the compact but well-equipped kitchen and there is a dining table you can set for four guests. The unusual layout means the two bedrooms are on their own floor making it feel as if you have more space to yourself. One of the bedrooms has an en-suite and there is a second bathroom on the top floor.
The sitting area opens out onto the balcony which is a fabulous addition to this house. Spend some time here with your morning coffee enjoying these fabulous views with the gentle soundtrack of the River Avon flowing beneath.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall
Stepping into The Leat there is a handy space to leave your coats and shoes before heading up the stairs.
Bedroom One
This snug double bedroom has a super king-size bed which can be arranged as two singles if needed. Making good use of the cottage’s staggered layout, an attractive country-cream décor is brought to life by contemporary pops of blue alongside artwork of Malmesbury through the ages, evoking a sense of the cottage’s rich history as the town’s historic watermill.
En-suite
A small en-suite shower room with a hand basin and toilet offers guests a good amount of privacy.
First Floor
Bedroom Two
The cottage’s second bedroom is a spacious twin room that can be converted to a super king-size bed should you prefer. Bursting with light thanks to a bright bay window that overlooks the river below, here the cottage’s heritage shines through the exposed ceiling beams, with vibrant red fabrics giving an elegant pop of colour to the classic country colour palette. There is a spacious double wardrobe and handy additional chest of drawers, plus a large bay window; the perfect spot to watch the river as it flows beneath.
Second Floor
Kitchen/Dining/Living Area
Found up the winding staircase on the cottage’s top floor is the open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area. A light, bright space with views from every angle, this is a cosy spot to whip up a feast and put your feet up after a busy day exploring the winding honey-stoned streets of Malmesbury.
A compact but well-equipped kitchen area has wooden worktops, slate flooring, and country-cream units complementing the cottage’s heritage expertly. Perfectly kitted out with all you’ll need for a self-catered stay, there’s an electric hob/oven, microwave, small extendable dining table, and plenty of cookware and crockery to make use of, plus a washing machine and freezer tucked out of sight in a small utility room at the top of the stairs.
Leading on from the kitchen is the spacious living area, brightly lit by skylights and windows from every angle which floods the space with natural light. Attractive leather seating gives the living space a cool, contemporary feel, whilst exposed beams and country cream hues evoke a feeling of countrified elegance. Here, you can sit back and relax together (views into the kitchen mean that the cook of the group never has to feel isolated from the rest), or unwind in front of the TV, with plenty of DVDs to choose from.
Family Bathroom
A family bathroom, at the end of the stairs of the living area, features a bath and separate shower, toilet, and basin, flooded with light thanks to a Velux window.
Outside
A set of French doors at the end of the living area open up onto a pretty balcony area complete with an outdoor dining set; the perfect place to enjoy the views of the river below, tuck into an alfresco feast or watch a traditional game of bowls, courtesy of Malmesbury Bowls Club next door. The river flows directly beneath this old mill and provides some easy-to-follow walking routes right from your doorstep. A real benefit in this busy market town are the two parking spaces that come with the property, found on the driveway at the end of the Mill building.
- "Very comfortable property. Lots of stairs so maybe not suitable for this with mobility problems. Well equipped kitchen." - "A little gem of a place. Spread over 3 floors with a bedroom on the ground floor with en-suite and a 2nd bedroom on floor 2. The top floor has a bathroom with shower and as you walk pass this you enter the open planned kitchen , living area with a door leading on to a small balcony. With a view from every window and a stunning sunset, this is a perfect location. The property is well maintained and has everything you need . There is off street parking up a drive for 2 cars but beware it will be tight if you have a large vehicle."

Little Maunditts Cottage is situated in a quiet lane in the heart of the charming village of Sherston and is within easy walking distance of all the village facilities including the two pubs, The Rattlebone Inn and Carpenters Arms, the The Angel Bistro & Coffee Shop, the church, the wonderfully well-stocked village store and two wine shops.
The cottage was originally the barns and stabling for a long-gone pub and was lovingly brought to life in 2014 and is only now available as a much admired holiday destination. As the cottage is in a conservation area it was designed to blend with neighbouring properties and retain the lovely character of Gaston Lane. Little Maunditts has the appearance and character of an old cottage but has all the modern components and facilities to make it lovely and warm and comfortable.
The interior of Little Maunditts Cottage is modern, bright and airy but still has a wealth of characterful features including handsome oak doors reclaimed from a Cotswold Manor House and unusual marble radiators in the bedrooms.
Little Maunditts Cottage is ideal for families or if you are several couples holidaying together as all three bedrooms are roughly equal in size with comparable facilities and all have en-suite bathrooms. Nobody in your group will have to settle for a less comfortable room! The large kitchen/dining/living room is a sociable venue in which to prepare supper and enjoy each others' company rather than someone being stuck in the kitchen whilst others relax elsewhere. There is also an additional cosy sitting room with another tv, dvd player and a wide selection of films and boardgames. There is also a comprehensive library of local guidebooks and maps to assist you in planning your days out exploring the local towns and countryside. The cottage has a useful utility room for coats and boots and also an additional freezer, washing machine and downstairs loo.
The historic village of Sherston was voted by The Times newspaper as being the 5th most desirable place to live in the UK. With it's elegant wide main street, excellent pub, wine shop, farm shop with butchery & florist and community run village shop with post office, it is easy to see why!
In July Sherston hosts a very popular Boules Tournament and Carnival and the wide high street is converted into a series of boules courts.
The National Arboretum at Westonbirt is very close by. In addition to the magnificent parkland and impressive and varied tree specimens, Westonbirt hosts a series of special events and open air concerts in addition to Westonbirts own guided walks and specialist talks.
The Sherston area is perfect for exploring the South Cotswolds on foot or by car. It is 5 miles from the historic town of Malmesbury, the oldest borough in England, with it's magnificent part-ruined Abbey, winding lanes and riverside walks. Also 5 miles away is Tetbury, renowned for its 17th century market hall and varied selection of antique shops.
Prince Charles resides at nearby Highgrove and in summer it is possible to visit his magnificent gardens. (by advance booking only)
The Stroud Valleys, Bath, Cirencester, the Marlborough Downs, Castle Combe and Lacock are all easily accessible and it is a scenic drive to the charming (but much busier) popular Cotswold tourist destinations of Stow-In-The-Wold, Bourton-On-The-Water and Moreton-In-Marsh. Castle Combe has been voted the prettiest village in England and Lacock, almost entirely owned by the National Trust, is regularly used as a film location - amongst it's credits are Harry Potter, War Horse, Doctor Dolittle and the drama series Pride & Prejudice and Cranford.
There are fabulous walks, both leaving directly from the cottage or a short drive away and there are plenty of guide books and maps on hand to help you choose a route.
The pretty cottage courtyard garden is a lovely sun-trap and a perfect place to enjoy outdoor dining in the summer.

The GARDEN at Little Maunditts Cottage was newly planted from scratch in 2014 and the transformation from a builder’s yard to a delightful courtyard haven has been a tremendous success. 300 dwarf box trees were planted to line the gravel paths and the beginnings of a delightful topiary display are already evident. The borders are filled with shades of pinks and purples and the lavender display is stunning. There is a table and chairs on the patio outside the house and a swing seat on the patio at the far end of the garden.
- "The extra touches were such a wonderful departure from so many so called hosts that just provide 4 walls, broken furniture and bare cabinets, but want top dollar. On check in there was every utensil and accoutrement you could need, a touch of groceries in the fridge until the co op opens, and some fresh scones. Beautifully decorated and appointed, if you’re going to be ANYWHERE near Sherston, I highly recommend this quaint and comfortable cottage."

Tucked away in the peaceful hamlet of Eastcourt, yet within easy striking distance of Cotswolds treasures such as Tetbury, Malmesbury and Cirencester, and with an excellent pub in the next village, Barns Lee is an utterly delightful barn conversion. It offers the perfect setting for a countryside escape.
Step inside and you’ll find an impressive entrance hall with rustic stone floors, wood-panelled walls and wooden beams. The striking living areas include the fabulous Barn Room with its vaulted ceiling and beams, huge stone fireplace and wood burning stove, a beautifully appointed open-plan kitchen with a half-glazed ceiling, and dining area, and the elegant Garden Room with a wood-burning stove and a line of bi-fold doors to the garden, for seamless indoor/outdoor living. Of the five bedrooms, the single room is on the ground floor. Head up the staircase from the hallway to discover three further bedrooms including two twin rooms and a king-size room. The spacious master bedroom is a charming and peaceful retreat, which is accessed via its own staircase from the Garden Room.
Sheltered in a well-established south-facing garden, Barns Lee is set back from the lane and hidden from view. Mature trees and hedges envelop the secluded garden which is heaven-sent for relaxing and soaking up the sunshine. The level lawn is perfect for garden games, whilst the courtyard and patio offer a pretty spot for alfresco dining; afterwards, light the fire pit and gather round to toast marshmallows as the stars appear overhead. The icing on the cake however is the fabulous, heated swimming pool (open mid April to end of September (weather dependent)), which lies in the lower garden and the hot tub, which is tucked in alongside the house.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
The entrance to Barns Lee is through the beautiful old, carved front door into an impressive entrance hall. Wood panelled walls, exposed stone and oak beams create a real sense of arrival. Pleasing design statements include an Ercol bench, antique umbrella stand, and full-height mirror.
Bedroom One:
The first of the five bedrooms is a single, which could also be used as a private study if needed. Sturdy double wooden doors lead into this cosy room, a comfy bed is tucked under the window and a desk and chair double as a useful nightstand. A bookcase with a range of children’s books covers one wall.
Ensuite:
Housing a shower cubicle, WC and hand basin, the ensuite to this bedroom is stylish and beautifully appointed. A large wall mirror fills the wall above the handbasin. A heated towel rail keeps things toasty.
Barn Room:
This delightful reception room sits within the original part of the barn and its former heritage is beautifully evident in the high, vaulted ceiling, exposed stone wall, and abundance of oak beams. There’s one step down into the room where you’ll find a traditionally styled cream wood burning stove sitting within the stone hearth and a generous L-shaped sofa is placed in front. It’s the perfect spot for cosy nights with a good film on the Smart TV and warming cold toes after winter walks. On sunny days open the sliding double doors, which lead out to the patio and courtyard garden.
Kitchen:
Wooden and glazed double doors lead from the entrance hall into the gorgeous open-plan kitchen, dining area and garden room. The half-timber, half-glazed ceiling above the kitchen allows plenty of light to flood in, pale grey cupboards are packed with everything you need for a self-catering stay and the central island, with its two high chair-back stools is the ideal place to perch with a coffee or a glass of wine, whilst budding chefs whip up something delicious. There’s a range-style cooker and induction hob, plus a larder fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and microwave.
Dining Area:
The kitchen flows seamlessly into the dining area, where the large oval dining table can be laid for elegant dinners, casual breakfasts and long, lazy Sunday brunches. On chilly days light the wood burning stove which faces both the dining area and the garden room.
From the dining area, there is a doorway and stairs to the master bedroom.
Garden Room:
From the dining area there’s one step down into the garden room, an elegant, light-filled reception room with exposed stone and a wall of glass, which folds back to bring the outside in. The far end of the room features a floor-to-ceiling window, looking out to the hot tub. A Smart TV is wall-mounted, above a mid-century style sideboard, and a colourful rug covers the warm wooden floor. A blue velvet sofa and grey mid-century modern sofa sit at right angles around the rug, and a low-slung woven leather lounge chair adds additional seating. Occasional tables ensure there is always somewhere to rest a drink.
Utility:
The utility area is accessed from the kitchen, down two steps. Here you’ll find the washing machine and tumble dryer. There is also a door to a lobby area with another set of stairs to the first floor, these stairs lead to the king-size room and this lobby area houses built-in wardrobes for use by guests staying in this room.
Bathroom:
Spacious and bright, the family bathroom features a large shower, WC, and a hand basin. There’s also a large wall mirror and a shaving point, the opening window ensures good ventilation after a steamy shower.
First Floor
The main set of stairs to the first floor is from the entrance hall, which has a wooden handrail and leads to bedroom two and then continues up to bedrooms three and four.
Bedroom Two:
Reached via the main staircase or from the second staircase by the utility room, this lovely room is decorated in neutral shades of cream and grey and features a king-size bed, a bedside table with a reading lamp and a six-drawer chest of drawers. The apex roof gives a feeling of space and two large roof lights let in plenty of light. Both have draw-down blinds to ensure no rude awakenings if the sun rises before you do! There is wardrobe storage at the bottom of the second staircase and easy access to the family bathroom.
Bedroom Three:
As you continue up the stairs, bedroom three is on your left-hand side. This cosy twin has built-in single beds, with under-bed storage, be careful during the night as they both have slightly reduced headroom due to the eaves and roof beams. A wooden desk sits between the two beds and a roof light lets in natural light.
Bedroom Four:
Opposite bedroom three is another twin room. Featuring a single bed and a small double, a shelved desk unit and a seated chest. Natural daylight comes from the roof light and the opening windows. The windows are designed to look like a door, but they do not open, this is just a design feature as the stone staircase beyond does not have a balustrade.
Bedroom Five:
Secluded and private, the master bedroom is accessed via stairs from the dining area, which lead up to a gloriously light and spacious room. Multiple roof lights and a window ensure there is plenty of natural light and all can be opened. As you come up the stairs the comfortable king-size bed is in front of you and night tables with reading lamps stand on either side of the bed. A multi-drawer chest and built-in wardrobes allow you to unpack and make yourself at home and there’s a dressing table just outside the ensuite bathroom. As you move into the room, you’ll find space to relax with a green velvet sofa and an armchair, grab your favourite book and curl up here for a while, away from the hustle of daily life.
Ensuite:
The spacious ensuite fills the far end of the roof space and features a large walk-in shower, with a rainfall shower head and a handheld shower, there’s also a WC. A marble-topped vanity is beneath the window with a hand basin and plenty of space for toiletries.
Outside
Barns Lee has an expansive, secluded garden filled with mature trees and shrubs that is perfectly suited to outdoor living. A pretty patio and courtyard garden house a fire pit, bench, and bistro table, whilst there’s also a teak table and chairs for alfresco dining. Meander down into the lower garden and you’ll find a divine heated swimming pool (open mid April to end of September (weather dependent)) surrounded by paving and lit for evening swims. Tucked in alongside the garden room is a hot tub.
* Additional fee of £177 for use of the hot tub per stay.
- "I stayed for three nights at Barns Lee with my family celebrating my 40th birthday. The house is lovely and I chose it for its facilities - the swimming pool and hot tub which did not disappoint. The swimming pool was heated and I was impressed with how warm it actually was! As we had a toddler with us they also provided a high chair, cot and stair gate which was so handy (there are quite a few stairs leading to the upstairs bedrooms so the stair gate was very welcomed). I had booked the property nearly a year in advance and the process for booking (with Bolthole Retreats) and the communication in between was brilliant, as they were very efficient and helpful. If you’re looking for a getaway in a big house (with a great big kitchen) with beautiful grounds, plenty of space for family/friends then I would recommend. You definitely need a car to get around (there is no pavement along the road to walk), and there are no shops close by, but Tetbury and Malmesbury are not far (we had arranged a supermarket shop to be delivered for our arrival which did the job). We also were able to fit 3 cars on the driveway in front of the house which was helpful."

- "We had a lovely 3 night stay at 43 Green Haven. The property itself is very well equipped and maintained. The main bedroom is amazing, the rest of the rooms are quite small but sufficient. Bathrooms are very modern as is the kitchen. The roof terrace facilities were spot on and sitting out on the deck watching the ducks was very peaceful. Overall a great stay and highly recommend it!" - "We have stayed in many properties at Lower Mill and this is by far the best! So well equipped, beautifully decorated and conveniently located within the estate. My only note to people with children is that there is no barrier between the patio decking and the lake. If the French doors are open then the open water is literally metres away. It’s not a negative at all but just something to be aware of if travelling with small children. Overall we had a wonderful stay and would definitely return!"

Life at Lower Mill
The aim is to achieve a perfect balance between nature & the built environment. We think they have got it just about right on this utterly unique 550-acre Nature Reserve.
Lower Mill Estate boasts some of the most varied flora, fauna and wildlife of anywhere in England – with gloriously untouched wildflower meadows, lakeland, woodland and an abundance of birdlife and animals, including deer, otters, beavers and badgers. Untouched for years and now sensitively managed by the estate, it offers one of the most unspoilt and abundant areas of wildlife, flora & fauna in the country, with two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
There are seven lakes, three rivers (including the Thames) & hundreds of acres of meadow and woodland, criss-crossed with nature trails. Only one-third of the land will ever be developed. The rest will be left to nature.
It is a truly stunning setting for you to explore by foot, bike, kayak or paddle board, all of which are available to hire from The Estate (with life jackets). The numerous walking trails are dotted with picnic spots, tranquil streams and ponds so that you can really make the most of the nature on your doorstep. For those sporting types, the outdoor tennis and muga court are available to hire and the children’s playground will provide hours of fun and laughter. Or, for true relaxation, Cooper’s Lodge comes with full access to the spa, indoor and 2 outdoor pools, as well as the fully equipped gym. Slots are available to book through The Estate.
Delicious food will never be far away. As well the many pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area, Lower Mill Estate is home to the wonderful Ballihoo Restaurant which will appeal to all taste buds and dietary requirements with their varied and delicious menu ranging from brunch to wood baked pizzas and fresh salads. Or if you need to stock up on the essentials, the plastic free Ballihoo Market will cater to all your needs.

- "Apartment was lovely, but felt it was a bit tired. Doors to decking from the bedroom were swollen at the bottom which made them difficult to shut. Drain smell in the shower. Info description stated there was a club house. Pub and restaurant, did not realise it was Ballyhoo all in one." - "Beautifully appointed apartment in a good location to explore the area. We had a lovely stay and everything you could possibly need was where you would expect to find it!!"

One of just three adult-only pods, it’s calm, comfortable and surrounded by nature. Guests share access to a wood-fired sauna, pizza oven, BBQs and fire pits. One well-behaved dog is welcome. Thoughtfully designed and full of comfort, this is a grown-up escape where peace and privacy come easy.
The Space:
• Private design-led pod with comfy bed and sofa
• Hot tub under cover, so rain never ruins a soak
• Smart TV (Netflix, Prime, YouTube-ready)
• Dog-friendly, because they deserve a break too
• Well-equipped kitchen & hotel style bathroom

🍕 Shared extras (just a stroll away)
• Bookable outdoor sauna – 1 hour daily use included
• Pizza oven and BBQ for proper outdoor eats

The Neighborhood:
Tucked in the countryside near Upper Minety, the site feels off-grid in the best way—peaceful, private, and properly quiet. You’re surrounded by open skies, fields and fresh air, but still within a short drive of Malmesbury’s indie shops and historic charm, or the lakes for paddleboarding, wild swims and lazy pub lunches. Remote, but not removed. Hidden, but not hard to reach.
Getting Around:
You’ll want a car here - this is countryside with a capital C. That said, once you’re parked, you might not feel like leaving. The lakes, local towns and walking routes are all easy to reach, and there’s plenty to explore if you fancy stretching your legs. Kemble station (for direct trains from London) is around 20 minutes away by car, and there’s good access to Cirencester, Malmesbury and beyond.
Other Things to Note:
⚠️ Need to know:
• 2 well-behaved dogs welcome (£30 per dog)
• Adult-only retreat (sorry, no little ones)
• No parties, no smoking, no noise after 10PM
• Strong WiFi and central heating
• Recycling + Waste sorted for you
Interaction with Guests:
🔑 Your Stay, Your Way
• Self check-in with key box

- "Herdsman's Cottage is a beautiful house that is tastefully decorated. It has a large garden and a nice seating area outside. Everything was really comfortable and high spec. The area is lovely - really convenient for the arboretum and parts of the Cotsworld Way. We had our dog and the garden was great for a run. There was also a no through lane opposite that was nice for a stroll. We were there as a family group with mixed ages. So going forward - completing the rail in the front garden by the steps would be useful, as would a grab rail on the wall at the top of the stairs. The emails about the booking ended up in my junk folder (not the owners fault!) and I made the error of not looking for check out instructions until after we had gone (might be worth sending everything together at the start). I would definately stay again."
