- "Our family ran into some problems but owner was very kind to let us check out later." - "We stayed as a family in the nest. The place was really lovely and clean. The complimentary breakfast was also great and replenished the following day. Could do with blackout blinds/curtains as it was very bright, but that is all. The owner was lovely and really helpful too. Will come back!" - "We enjoyed our stay at the Wild Garlic Rooms. Initially we were disappointed there was no parking onsite but we found parking places in Nailsworth that were 23 hours free parking and just a short walk. We would definitely go back but this time we would book a ground floor self catering room. "

As you approach Walkley Wood Cottage through the winding lanes of Nailsworth, you will notice how the town and surrounding properties are almost hidden by the secluded woodland valley to the east of Stroud. Proudly perched on the side of sleepy Shortwood Road is Walkley Wood Cottage, a distinguished 19th-century property with a rustic golden stone that immediately casts a warm and welcoming aura. Ideally situated, this cottage is the perfect base for exploring the tranquillity of the surrounding Stroud Valleys and the wider Cotswolds, while guests are also in easy walking distance of the cheerfully eclectic town of Nailsworth. If you're looking for somewhere to totally relax and unwind, then Walkley Wood is the perfect Cotswold home for you.
As you approach the cottage through the cast iron gate and down the stone steps, you will notice a small outdoor table and chairs set down from the lane behind the dry-stone wall. Guests are welcome to sit outside and enjoy the warmth of the summer months in this compact but delightful sun trap. You may find yourself admiring the beautiful architecture and delicate Georgian windows, this cottage was, after all, built in 1852. Although the exact history of the cottage remains largely a mystery, it has been suggested that the building may have been used as a pub many years ago, which could explain the origins of the kitchen skylight. Either way, it's nice to consider that many happy memories have been created within these historic walls!
*Dogs: 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome at the cottage at an additional cost each. Please let us know if you will be bringing a dog and we will then revise your booking confirmation. The pet fee is NOT included in your booking fee. A request for an additional fee per pet will be sent to you after you have placed your booking. Your pet fee must be paid for before your arrival date.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
Once you've opened the white-painted door with antique fox door knocker, you will find yourself in the neatly presented entrance hall of Walkley Wood Cottage.
Living Room:
The living room is the heart of this lovely little cottage. Set on the ground floor, it offers a warm and cosy living space and is the perfect place to kick back and relax after a long day exploring the Cotswolds. Decorated in quality Farrow & Ball paint throughout the cottage, the living room is stylishly understated, with quirky pieces of statement vintage furniture. Relax on the dark green leather sofa under the atmospheric lighting of the many lamps that line the room, and most eye-catching of all the gorgeous French brass candle-style wall lamps. If you fancy curling up and watching a film on the TV, then you'll be spoilt for choice by the large selection of Dvds you'll find on the in-built shelves, as well as a great selection of books. Lift the lid of the wooden chest/coffee table and you'll find a superb selection of board games and puzzles – perfect for a rainy day! Of course, the real centre piece of the sitting room is the log burning stove, a real treat for holidaymakers looking for an authentic country-cottage experience. Bask in the warmth of the flickering flames while snuggled under the lovely soft blankets and cushions, kindly provided by Karen to help ensure that you have a homely and comfortable stay!
Lower Ground Floor
Kitchen:
Situated on the lower ground floor, the kitchen is a very well-equipped space for both cooking and dining. Featuring a large fridge/freezer, excellent 5 burner gas hob, electric fan oven, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, Nespresso coffee machine and a vast selection of crockery, dishes and utensils, this compact country kitchen has everything you will need. The beamed ceiling and colourful rug add a touch of character to this simple space. A pine dining table seats four guests comfortably – look out for the drawer on the end of the table – that's where all the cutlery is kept! Due to the layout and nature of this property, the kitchen does not receive a lot of natural light, however, at the far end, you will find a lovely walk-in alcove with a big skylight. In this area, you will find the Panasonic microwave, digital radio, bins and a great selection of mugs and glasses.
First Floor
Family Bathroom:
A bright and spacious tiled room offset by the wooden bath panelling and mirror. Featuring a WC, washbasin and bathtub with a fixed overhead shower and usual circular shower curtain.
Twin Bedroom:
A bright, fresh and simple bedroom, this room contains one single bed and one trundle bed that can be put away. Ideal for two children or single occupancy, this room might be a little too cosy for two adults to share, so please see photographs before making a decision. Guests in this room can enjoy pretty views over the Cotswold valley, as well as a few stylish touches such as the sheepskin rug and ornate cast iron bed frame.
Second Floor
Master Bedroom:
This fabulous loft-style double bedroom boasts beautiful views from its topmost position in the cottage. With a sumptuous king-size bed (can be made up as a twin on request) nestled below the original oak beams of the sloping ceiling, this room is cosy and simple, with some lovely rustic details. Exposed Cotswold stone provides a stunning natural feature wall, while the Victorian chest of drawers and rocking chair are ideal for storage. You will find the hairdryer in the top drawer of the chest. A curtained-off hanging area makes for a unique open-plan wardrobe, ensuring there's enough space for you to unpack and relax, while the room retains a lovely snug feel.
Outside
Walkley Wood Cottage enjoys the use of a small gravel/paved courtyard at the front of the house. There is a small patio table and two chairs that guests may use for breakfast, lunch or an evening glass of wine if they wish! If you are looking to stretch your legs further, there are plenty of beautiful walks and open fields surrounding Walkley Wood Cottage.
- "We had a great time at Walkley Wood Cottage. The village center is just a short (bit steep) walk away and you‘ll find everything you need there. The cute Cottage is spread over 4 floors with one room on each floor, and steep and narrow stairs. It was okay for us, but have that in mind if you struggle with mobility issues or travel with (small) children. Our daughter (18 months) loved climbing the stairs and we spend most of our time going up and down with her. The rooms in general were nice and cosy, especially the bedroom at the top floor. The kitchen was a little dirty (especially the oven/baking tins) and as it is in the basement it was a little chilly (even in the summer). All in all we did have a wonderful stay at the cottage as the points mentioned above were minor problems for us and we felt welcome and at home."

- "We had a fabulous weekend stay in 5 Stone Cottage. It's very homely and well equipped, providing everything you could need for your stay. Extra touches such as a selection of tea bags, a pint of milk, salt & pepper and a spice/herb selection, plus all the kitchen basics of washing up liquid, tea towels etc were available which is always very helpful. The house was warm and cosy the whole time we were there, the beds are very comfortable and there's plenty of wardrobe space etc The location of the cottage is fabulous. Nailsworth is lovely little town with some great shops and food options and also a good base for exploring elsewhere in the area. Communication from Stay Cotswolds ahead of our arrival was excellent. The only minor issues we had was identifying which parking spaces were allocated to the cottage, as the car park was muddy and hiding the number, and in the en suite there was a broken shower head cradle. It was still usable but we alerted our contact at Stay Cotswolds who replied promptly with an apology and promise to fix it once we'd left. It didn't impact our stay in any way. Our only feedback would be a request for clarity on any recycling options and how, if at all, it's best to separate out the rubbish. Overall, we were really happy and we'll definitely be back another time."

- "Fantastic cottage, spotlessly clean, amazing views. Beautifully light inside even on a cloudy day. King size bed was comfy, got v good nights sleep. Plenty of hot water. Only downside, which is nothing to do with the cottage itself, is the very narrow lanes around the area, although living where we do we're a bit more used to that! The owner was very welcoming & friendly and had even made some delish cakes. Would recommend this cottage for touring the lower Cotswolds."

- "What a lovely cottage, finished to such a high standard. Had everything we needed for our stay. Nailsworth is a lovely village so this was the perfect base. I’d recommend this place to everyone. Communication was excellent. Thanks for a wonderful stay in your amazing cottage." - "Impressive rehabilitation - we stayed in the main apartment whose door faces towards Egypt Mill on the ground floor. There is one bedroom on that floor and two bedrooms down a flight of stairs. All rooms are enormous, with high ceilings. Beds were comfortable, showers (located in the lower level) were hot and good pressure, but rely on a pump for draining, which decided to fail during our first shower. Management had it fixed within a day. We would definitely stay again, as the location is terrific, quiet, convenient, and the management was very professional."

- "We can highly recommend this property. Location is great - within walking distance of a bakery, grocery store and plenty of restaurants and pubs. The flat is spacious, with a lot of natural lighting and was clean as a whistle. It had everything we needed as a family. I showed my extended family the flat while I was there and they were all quite impressed. Would stay here again." - "We moved from San Francisco to London December 2020 and had heard much about the Cotswolds. We were not sure where to stay but wanted to find a place that did not have AS MANY narrow roads. Nailsworth turned out to be an amazing spot and we were thrilled with our choice. The owner of these units, Matthew is amazing. He is easily accessible, communicates well and has many recommendations. The units were done really well. Reverse osmosis water filter. beautiful skylights that open, and they even have a jumpy castle they would pull out for families on the lawn. Many families gathered outside and chatted while the children happily played. The Common is a short car ride away. It is a huge, beautiful open field for walking, biking, golfing. The location of these units is amazing. You can take the train to Stroud and take the 63 bus a short ride if you wish or there is abundant parking. Walking around town is right outside. There are several great restaurants and shops within 5 minutes and it is a 3 minute walk to a large grocery store and a bakery, a high end butcher and many charming shops moments away. You would never know you are so close to all as it is tucked away. Our week was fantastic and we will definitely return. Matthew is a great host and the units are smartly designed and modern. They even have radiant heat on the floors and a deep bathtub. Easiest showers we have ever used too. Push of a button to control temperature and pressure. All excellent. So thankful we took a chance and explored this area."

- "Perfect accommodations for our family. Spacious, neat and clean. Beds are comfortable and showers are awesome. Fans are in all of the bedrooms which is nice. Appliances are updated and efficient. Matt provides not only a travel cot (pack n play) for the baby, but children’s’ plates, cups and silverware as well. The only thing missing would be a high chair. The restaurant is literally across the street, and the whole town is within walking distance, so the location is very convenient. We would love to stay here again if we ever get the chance."

Hidden along a very quiet narrow street away from the centre of Nailsworth, Pump Cottage sits in the middle of a short terrace with the green pump which used to supply water in the front garden. You enter the cottage through the front garden which has a bistro set so you can sit out with your coffee in the morning.
Inside, the cottage has been beautifully finished with crisp white walls which make the space light and airy despite its compact size. The snug is made for curling up with your loved one in front of the wood burner with a glass of wine to reconnect without any distractions. The folding dining table can be used for meals without permanently taking up space in this cosy room. At the rear of the cottage the cleverly designed kitchen gets natural light from a high window. It has been arranged to make the most of the space so you can prepare meals and have enough room for storage. Up on the first floor the sitting room can be divided from the main hallway with shoji style paper sliding doors. Opening these doors, you find a large sofa which folds out to make a double sofa bed for added flexibility for guests. This sitting area is perfect for spreading out with a good book or putting the radio on and carrying on with any work in progress embroidery and knitting you brought with you. On the top floor the master bedroom is designed perfectly for a quiet retreat at the end of the day.
Looking out over Nailsworth and the surrounding hills there is a super king-size bed for luxurious comfort and undisturbed sleep. The southerly facing rear garden has an allotment style open to the neighbours sections with a stepped path leading you up to the different sections. Passing to the left of the quaint garden sheds you reach the first paved terrace with four chairs, a table and the BBQ. For the best views continue up the path, watching your step, to the upper decked terrace where you can see over the rooftops and beyond. On-street parking is available to the front of the cottage, it is not reserved but is unrestricted.
