Guest Reviews:

- "Wonderful inn in every way. Great restaurant too!" - "A lovely 1 night stay at The Lion. Just me and my dog - they are very welcoming to dogs. Room was clean and warm with good quality toiletries and tea/coffee. Bed was very comfortable. I had dinner in the evening which was excellent. The dining area had a friendly, lively atmosphre and the pub in general is a perfect old-style place with good beers on tap but also a gastro-pub style menu and wine list. Breakfast in the morning was also just as you would want it - I had the full English which set me up very well for the day. Took a walk up to Belas Knap Long Barrow and then Cleeve Hill - both highly recommended if you want to tire your dog out and get some magnificent views yourself! I only saw the town/village when everything was closed but it looked like it would be well worth a stroll round - I would have liked to stay to browse the second hand bookshop (I tihnk it's called Books & Ink) but sadly did not have time. Really good stay - I hope to return."

This handsome and well-proportioned 1900's holiday home has a riverside setting with superb views. It is just 0.3 miles from the centre of Winchcombe and sits slightly back off the Winchcombe to Broadway Road behind a tall hedge that provides a cossetted and private setting. An immaculate driveway, planted with country cottage flowers and shrubs, provides parking for up to five cars. The 102-mile-long Cotswold Way passes the front door and guests can walk across the fields to Sudeley Castle & Gardens.

The owners of Kingfisher Cottage have created a very well-equipped holiday home with a spacious, interconnecting ground floor area that features a kitchen-breakfast room, a living room, and a large conservatory that's both an elegant dining area and games room, with a full-size pool table. Kingfisher is ideal for disabled guests as it has a ground-floor twin bedroom with a Craftmatic electric bed and a fully accessible wet room. On the first floor are four very well appointed ensuite bedrooms, four with standard double beds and one twin.

Kingfisher Cottage has a wonderful garden. The owners love of gardening is immediately obvious as it is planted with a huge array of flowering annuals, perennials and bushes, as well as having mature trees, a delightful flower-covered pergola and a lovely expanse of lawn. Immediately outside the breakfast room and the conservatory is a long patio with a border full of flowering plants, and a wooden fence that backs onto the bank of the River Isbourne. Open fields lie beyond with the Cotswold countryside immediately accessible via a footpath to the side of the house. The patio has a beautiful, hand-built wooden table to seat 10 guests and two bistro tables with parasols. On the lawn are four sun loungers and a garden bench.

Ground Floor

The entire ground floor area features a beautiful, polished limestone floor with underfloor heating, rugs and has a pleasing and calming neutral palette of colours.

Entrance Hall:
At the front porch you'll be greeted by a delightful, mosaic kingfisher, handmade by the owner, which sets the welcoming tone of this holiday cottage. Step through the front door, which is surrounded by beautiful flowering plants, into the long entrance hall. The room is furnished with a king-size double bed, bedside tables, with touch-sensitive reading lamps, a double wardrobe, a luggage rack, antique armchair and a chest of drawers with a large mirror above. Bedroom 4:
Archers' twin bedroom features twin beds on original Victorian metal bed frames with a shared bedside chest of drawers and ornate reading lamp. A striking block print wallpaper with hares and thrushes creates a feature behind the beds while a rocking chair beckons you in to sit and rest. (Note the beds are slightly higher than beds on standard frames.)

A second door leads through to a dressing area, with double wardrobe, to another door that leads into the bathroom shared with Bedroom 3.

Family Bathroom:
Sitting conveniently between Bedroom 3 and 4, the private, Shared Bathroom features a large walk-in shower, with central and hand-held shower heads, a corner bath with hand-held shower for hair washing, a toilet, wash basin with vanity unit and extendable mirror and a heated towel rail.

Outside
From the front of the cottage, a gravelled border wraps around the side of the cottage (overlooking Castle Street) to the rear where guests have access to a large garden laid to lawn, with mature trees and a patio with outdoor seating for eight. A path leads down to a wooden picket fence, which borders Beesmoor Brook that feeds the River Isbourne as it runs through Winchcombe. Please note that the fencing provides a secure barrier to prevent children from accessing the brook. However, the side garden is raised and open, which is a potential fall hazard for young children. Therefore, please ensure children are not left unattended in the garden.

Guest Reviews:

- "Great place to stay literally in the town but didn't feel like it loads of space in the property so you weren't on top of each other. Glad we could take dog as there was loads of walks around the area, garden was great but not fully fenced in so needed to be mindful when dog was out in garden with us. That being said it was a great place to stay and the town of Winchcombe was lovely with nice pubs to eat and drink but the kitchen in the property was brilliant if you want to cook for yourself. 3 double bedrooms with ensuite and a room with 2 single beds so that was great as well as you don't get that in many places."

What is does have is all the beauty but with none of the crowds of day visitors. Winchcombe's origins go back as far as Anglo-Saxon times and it was once famous for its wool industry. The stunning Sudeley Castle is located in Winchcombe and well worth a day visit. Home of Lady Ashcombe and once home to Katherine Parr, Sudeley is indeed a must on your to-do list. Cheltenham Spa should definitely be on your "to do" list, with its café culture and wide boulevards, excellent shopping and impressive Georgian architecture. Now home to The Ivy restaurant, but remember to book ahead. Cheltenham is lucky to be the location of many 'Festivals' each year. These are often advertised on the BBC. The Jazz Festival in May, Science Festival in June, Music Festival in July and the Literature Festival in October. It is worth booking tickets if you are staying during one of these peak periods. All events are well worth attending and take place in and around the impressive Montpellier Gardens.
If you like classic cars you will love Prescott. Prescott Hill Climb is just a short drive away in a neighbouring village and if the weather is fine there is nothing better than a day with a picnic on the hillside watching the classic cars race up the circuit. If Steam Trains take your fancy, we are well positioned with Winchcombe's very own steam train and station. The Gloucestershire Steam Railway website will have more information and a timetable of events. A little further afield but all within an hour's drive is Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Place and the beautiful city of Oxford.

A sudeley castle cottage that sleeps 7 guests in 4 bedrooms
Cottage
Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

This traditional Cotswold home has been carefully refurbished to create the perfect mix of old and new. The Victorian inglenook fireplace, original beams (low in places, so mind your head!), wooden floors and terracotta red William Morris-style wallpaper are perfectly complemented with a modern, well-equipped kitchen, three delightful bedrooms (two on the first floor and one on the top floor), three bathrooms and a downstairs cloakroom, plus a modern garden annexe with twin beds. Lady Ashcombe has personally selected works of art and furniture to bring the history and character of the cottage to life. Some of the furnishings come directly from the Castles' collection, others from local antique shops and auction rooms.

Thanks to its lantern ceiling in the Kitchen and Living Room and French doors out to the garden, light sweeps through the rear of the cottage, creating a bright and inspiring entertaining space. The downstairs living space runs from the cosy Dining Room at the front of the house, overlooking Vineyard Street, with its inglenook fireplace, wood burner, and beamed ceiling, through to the modern, well-equipped kitchen and the stunning Living Room. Here guests will find two spaces, where they can relax, play games, watch TV, and enjoy the unusual flame-effect fireplace.

The whole downstairs flows through to the suntrap courtyard garden, perfect for a BBQ after walking the Cotswolds Way!

Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
On entering the cottage, there is a small entrance area decorated with a floral terracotta red, William Morris-style wallpaper. To the left are the stairs to the first and second floor, and to the right is the dining room, which leads through to the living room, courtyard garden and annexe.

Dining Room:
A charming entertaining space with a rectangular, wooden dining table and seating for eight guests. An inglenook fireplace and wood burner complete this characterful room, along with original beams and a large dresser displaying vintage plates. The dining room looks out onto the sunken footpath running along the front of the terrace of properties on Vineyard Street. (Starter logs are provided for the wood burner. However, please note, there is very little space between the log burner and dining table. For that reason, many guests do not use the fireplace).

Off the Dining Room are two storage areas, one under the stairs (housing the ironing board, clothes airer and safety gate) and the second that leads to a cloakroom (W.C. and washbasin) with space to hang coats and keep walking boots (and store the highchair).

The Kitchen:
The modern kitchen is fitted with oak worktops and plenty of shaker-style cream-coloured cupboards. It is fully equipped, with a dishwasher, range-style oven/hob (6-rings/3 ovens), microwave, Nespresso machine, washer/dryer, and lovely washing up area under a "lantern" ceiling, which throws plenty of natural light into the room. The kitchen is fully kitted out with crockery, glassware, utensils, and cutlery for a self-catering stay.

The Living Room:
The Living Room is the star of the property, with its French windows to the courtyard garden and lantern ceiling making this a light and bright socialising space. Cleverly divided into two parts, with a large L-shaped sofa, two antique armchairs, 50" Smart TV, Gazco electric flame-effect fire and coffee table (ingeniously made from an antique trunk) at one end, and a beautiful card table, desk and bookcases at the other end. Books of all genres and some family games and cards are provided for guests to browse and enjoy.

French doors lead to the private and multi-level gravelled courtyard garden and the Annexe.

Annexe - Bedroom Four:
Up a small flight of steps, at the end of the garden, is the Annexe with its en-suite twin bedroom. This generously sized room is furnished with two single beds complimented by two bedside chests and reading lamps, a handy chair, a nest of tables and a wardrobe. (Note: WiFi cover is not strong in the Annexe.)

A delightful bedroom with an inviting king-size double bed and a pretty view over the garden and Annexe, Dent's Almshouses, and towards the Cotswold countryside. Complete with bedside cabinets and lamps, a chest of drawers, two chairs, a built-in wardrobe, and a storage ottoman. (A travel cot is stored in the wardrobe.)

Bedroom Three:
This spacious and bright twin bedroom has a fantastic view over the garden and Annexe, and out to Sudeley Hill and the surrounding Cotswold countryside. There are two bedside tables and lamps, two storage ottomans, two chairs, a chest of drawers, and a built-in wardrobe.

Guest Reviews:

- "We had a great time staying at 14 Vineyard Street! We loved the house and having the full kitchen, washer and dryer, cable and Internet, multiple bathrooms and bedrooms a good distance from the socializing space. Free admission to Sudeley Castle was also fabulous as it allowed us to go multiple times with the kids. It was the perfect location for our family. The only comment we have that is for management is that there is something off about the water in the kitchen. It tastes bad. The water upstairs and in the separate sleeping quarters out back was fine, but the kitchen water wasn't. Our 5-year-old ended up with stomach issues during the trip, which we eventually attributed to the water. Once we stopped giving him kitchen water for drinking his stomach situation improved. It would be great if you had the kitchen water looked at just to avoid anyone having any issues in the future."

The Hayloft - sleeps 6 guests in 3 bedrooms
House
Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

As you drive through the entrance gates to Postlip House Cottages and up the tarmac drive to the gravel courtyard you'll immediately feel that you have arrived somewhere exclusive and very special. The Hayloft sits independently, to one side of its parent property, separated by the original hayloft courtyard, and across another wide gravel courtyard from its sister holiday rentals, The Paddock Cottage and The Chestnut Cottage. The Hayloft is tucked away in the folds of the Cotswolds hills yet just a mile from historic Winchcombe, home of Sudeley Castle and Gardens.

The owners have lavished great care and attention on the Hayloft's interior, renovating it throughout to present a luxury holiday home that combines the original features of exposed timbers, stone walls, and doors, with contemporary furniture, art and amenities - all drawn together with a soothing palette of white walls, wooden flooring and soft natural greens and earthy tones in the fabrics and furnishings. The Hayloft has three double bedrooms, one off-set from the others with its own ensuite shower room (and an in-bedroom, freestanding bath), and a family shower room. Though the master bedroom is a showstopper, the beautiful, open-plan kitchen, which flows through to the dining and living area, will be the main attraction for guests, providing a spacious yet cosy and inviting cooking, dining and entertaining area.

Immediately outside the Hayloft is a large, secluded patio, overlooked by trees and bordered by a quiet corner of Postlip House's rear garden. On the upper level, immediately inside the main entry gate, there's a children's play area with a wooden swing set and slide on an artificial grass surface. The owner has rescue chickens, who live beyond the Hayloft's patio. If they have been laying, you'll be able purchase delicious fresh eggs from the Egg honesty box located in the main courtyard.

Guest Reviews:

- "The Hayloft was a lovely place to stay, everything about it was to a high level and I have nothing negative to say! Lots of information was provided in advance, which was really helpful. I would thoroughly recommend staying here." - "We had a fabulous time at the Hayloft. Well equipped and nicely designed space. Beautifully appointed and in a lovely countryside setting. Only a couple of little negatives to note: Some of the party did find the sofa a little uncomfortable - as the cushions are angled down making it feel as if you are going to slide off. For the cost of the stay we were expecting a few more essentials to be provided such as shampoo, shower gel, more kitchen towel etc. More than one set of cutlery and crockery would be recommended, especially when only two dishwasher tablets were left for our use. As a party of 6 who like to cook and entertain it was challenging. The pepper mill was empty and the milk element of the coffee machine did not work. Niggles aside we would certainly return!"

The barn has been beautifully renovated and is a spacious stay for two people. On arrival it was immaculately clean and there was a luxurious hamper of treats to welcome us. The owners were super thoughtful and friendly, providing us with clear welcome information prior to arriving and on arrival too. The kitchen is well equipped and the furnishings are comfy with quality bedding and towels too. Winchcombe is an easy short walk from the barn either via the road or the river, and is a charming place to be based. It’s quiet but not too quiet with some fab restaurants and cafes to visit - we especially recommend Wesley House, Honey Beas cafe & the Old Bakery. There are also plenty of walks and history on the doorstep. We didn’t want to leave at the end of our week which I think is a great testament to how comfortable and lovely the barn is! Old Laundry, set on the Sudeley Castle Estate just on the edge of Winchcombe, is an idyllic family retreat.
