The space features exposed brick, tall ceilings, lots of sunlight, high end appliances, mattresses and fixtures, marble countertops, hand carved clay tile from Italy, and the original wood floors and trim.

Our home is situated on the side of a small hill overlooking an active farming area with farmers fields and pastures giving way to rolling wooded hills in the distance. Enjoy a bicycle or motorcycle ride or quiet drive along paved country roads, or relax in the yard or on your balcony with a good book and a favorite beverage.

Wintertime sports activities are nearby with cross country and downhill skiing, tubing and snowboarding at Fort McCoy, cross country at the golf course in Sparta, and downhill at Mount La Crosse. Snowmobile trails abound! You and the kids can enjoy sledding on the mild slope of the hill right behind your apartment, build snowmen in the yard, etc. Try your hand at ice-fishing on Perch Lake or Lake Neshonoc or skating at the Sparta Hockey Rink or one of the outdoor rinks at Memorial Park in Sparta... or just snuggle in and stay warm in the apartment.

The apartment is attached to our home with a separate entrance for your convenience. Sound buffers between our living spaces mean we can't hear you and you can't hear us.

RECLAIMED CHARM
A few years ago a storm blew over an enormous elm tree I climbed as a kid. It landed on the corner of an early 1900's granary. The owner chose not to repair it and allowed us to take it down for the salvaged lumber. You'll find that reclaimed lumber throughout the apartment. Wooden floors were reworked from the granary flooring. Wainscot, trim and wood ceilings were made from the siding. Shelves and benches that adorn the apartment were made from refashioned roofing boards. Table, work station and vanity tops were made from wall studs, beams and boards. Nail holes, knots and blemishes remain visible in the wood giving the finished pieces a unique and beautiful character.

Building our Vacation Rental apartment using reclaimed wood, inspired us to start a "green" business. Used Anew is operated primarily on site. Guests can take a tour of our Show Home & Shoppe, just down the hill, to see many of the products and features we make from reclaimed wood and other materials. As Used Anew, we've taken apart unwanted buildings in the area, saving what we can of the vintage materials. Then, working with area Amish craftsmen and our own in-house ThingMakers, we produce flooring, accent wall and ceiling options, kitchen cabinets, furniture and decor - all from reclaimed materials!
Along the way, we also accumulate antiques and collectibles, and make these available in the Show Home & Shoppe, as well.

- "Highly recommend this property, even for families! I wouldn’t say this is completely open concept, more semi-private…the bedroom is on the opposite side of the wall from the main space, just a cased opening rather than a door. Emily is an amazing host that anticipates the needs of her guests, having many extras on hand. We booked for our family of 4 originally for one of my sons to compete in a tournament on the river. We ended up allowing the other son to bring a friend and also brought our 2 month old foster baby. There was ample space for all 6 of us. The teens had the main room with the sofa bed and air mattress Emily provided. Us parents and the infant had the bedroom, which also has a sitting area, and the deck to ourselves. Though the location of the property is in the town and surrounded by close neighbors, it actually feels very private and secluded once down to the house and on the covered deck. You overlook the boat landing, but that is not disruptive, actually enjoyable and entertaining at times. I rarely heard any noise other than river activity or critters (birds, otters and groundhogs to name a few we watched). The locals that live at the landing are helpful and friendly as well. The view from the house and deck overlooking the river is very relaxing! I am already missing it!! I highly recommend this property and will be back when in the area!"

- "You can't beat the location of this apartment - right in the heart of the downtown, with lots of restaurants, bars and shops within a couple of blocks. We parked the car behind the building and didn't go back to until we left after the weekend. It's a little tricky to get in so pay close attention to the instructions. There are multiple flights of stairs so be aware of that. The apartment itself was large, clean and well appointed. It faces onto the back alley so no street noise, very quiet and comfortable. Our unit overlooked Main St of a quiet downtown area, so noise was not an issue. Restaurants and a grocery store are within walking distance. Biking, canoeing, Amish shops and downtown Viroqua all within a short drive. Parking is a little walk, but not unexpected in a downtown area. Be prepared to walk steps to unit (26 steps) as the building has loft style apartments with very high ceilings! We will definitely be back!!"

Our convenient in-town one-bedroom has recently been converted! One room has a queen bed, other room as a comfy fold out couch. It has a well-equipped kitchenette with a sink, microwave, apartment fridge/freezer, Kuerig coffee maker and more. It also has a full bath.
This apartment is on Main Street and can be a bit noisy from the traffic during the day and in the morning. It is generally quieter at night but bring earplugs if this bothers you.

The space
The Red Door Suite is the smallest of three units at 217 on Main, short term rentals in the heart of Viroqua. It is the only unit available for single-night stays. Each unit has a private entrance with a keypad lock.
You will be sent a key code for entry the afternoon before your arrival.

Perfect for the solo traveler! This cute micro apartment is situated in downtown Sparta. A coffee shop, sandwich diner, the farmer's market, and cocktail bar are all within a minutes walk. We've taken advantage of all the space to make this a comfortable experience.

The twin daybed sleeps one adult and doubles as a couch. The kitchen is stocked with a microwave, Keurig, refrigerator, and dishes. Laundry services are available just a few blocks away.

Please note that this is an early 1900s home which has been converted into a multifamily unit. You may notice some of the "charm" of this old lady during your stay such as the flooring may be uneven in some areas. The front porch is also a common area for guests in all three of our units to enjoy together.

This apartment is one of three units which comprise 217 on Main, short term rentals in the heart of Viroqua. The apartments are distinguished by their door color. This is the Blue Door Apartment. It is located in the rear of the building on the first level. All apartments have private entrances and keyless digital locks. We love our little blue door, we have heard it was a tea house at one time

We know that it can be noisy from the upstairs guests so in 2021 we insulated the joists (it took a truck load of insulation) between the upstairs and downstairs and added sound absorbing panels in the hallway. This has helped with noise but not completely. We have ordered more panels and are adding area rugs upstair. Still, it is an older structure and the wood floors, while beautiful do have some reverberation.

Laundry facilities are shared and located in the basement and a green area with plantings and a picnic table are available to all guests. The porch is all yours.

This location is in a quiet neighborhood, close to both hospitals and colleges. This is a great place for a traveling business person or a family who enjoys checking the scenery of an old river town. Great location for superb food, sight seeing, hiking or just relaxing! We are here to make sure your visit is what you want.

This is the lower level of a two apartment house Yellow Door apartment above. Full kitchen, plenty of room for small family. Huge porch on the front of the house for morning coffee and evening meals in the warm months. Quiet location nestled in the cedar trees open field. Located the south side of Viroqua it is walkable to downtown. Off street parking right by the door. Pets are allowed by selecting pets when reserving. 5th person is $10 fee because of linens and pull out set up.

The space
Great space with lots of light and a full kitchen and great feeling open plan. Better photos on the way. We have a long term renter in until mid February. Personally I love this as much, or more than the upstairs yellow door. Bedroom and bathroom are bigger and the porch is amazing. Well insulated so you don't hear noise from upstairs. Very quiet but easily get to downtown and all the fun in the driftless.

This is a main level unit. Sound from the movement of resident upstairs can be heard inside the unit during daytime hours. Part of the charm of this building is all the beautiful woodwork. Guest should be aware that sound may transfer more easily because of this. To help absorb sound, we have utilized rugs and drapes.

Unique, centrally-located and freshly updated upstairs apartment in duplex. We’ve done our best to freshen this private second floor unit in our old ugly home. Amish made kitchen cabinets, island and furniture. New appliances and fixtures. View granddad’s bluff out the bedroom window! Close to UWL, Viterbo, Mayo Clinic, and downtown (8 block walk to 3rd street). We currently live in the downstairs apartment with our dogs.

The space
This is a one+ bedroom second floor apartment in our old home. We’ve done our best to make a comfortable space for up to four guests. There is one full bedroom with a closet and one separate office/den/br space with a small dresser, desk, 2nd tv, beanbag and futon that drops to a full sized bed. There are extra linens and pillows if you plan to use the futon or couch for sleeping. The apartment has an open concept living room and kitchen/dining space with a 55” smart tv, a large, extremely comfortable couch, a large island table with 4 chairs and another small dining table. The kitchen has been updated with new Amish made cabinets and island as well as new appliances, countertops and fixtures. Most of the furniture is newly built by a local Amish family just outside of Cashton.

This is a private one bedroom, one bath apartment with a separate private office/den area that has a desk, a huge beanbag and a full sized futon. Guests also have access to a shared half bath which is outside the private unit, a meditation area, and our shared backyard space that is fully fenced, although large dogs wanting out may be able to penetrate the fence as it’s only about 40 inches high. Be sure to say hello to our Great Pyrenees puppy. His name is Buddha. He is the one who destroyed the yard, although we will be working on fixing it up throughout the year.

Other things to note
There is one parking spot in the alley next to the garage for your use, and there is plenty more parking space on the street in front of the house. Enter the apartment through the back door of the house. Please stick to the sidewalk to enter the house in order to avoid any pyranese puppy holes we have missed filling. We apologize for the current state of the yard. Our puppy, Buddha, is huge and can dig a hole with just a single scoop of his giant paw. Feel free to say hello to him or the others; they are extremely friendly. We will be working to improve the backyard area as time allows. Thank you for your understanding.

A note about Lake Onalaska: Lake Onalaska is part of a natural wildlife refuge and as such the lake conditions vary with the seasons. We believe it is equally beautiful year round but it is definitely different depending on the time of year. Year round the lake is a peaceful escape with beautiful sunsets where wildlife abounds. In the Spring the view is spectacular. As summer approaches the natural vegetation including wild rice becomes prominent. Because of this the lake doesn’t lend itself well to swimming from the shore. Sit on top kayaks and a canoe are available free of charge. In the fall the view of the fall leaves on the Minnesota bluffs is stunning. In winter the lake is especially beautiful and a great place to ice fish. If you are interested in staying with us and have questions about the conditions of the lake during the dates of your stay, please reach out.
