Bad Harzburg is located on the northern edge of the Harz and is a recognized brine spa.

The city lies in the area of the northern foothills of the Harz at an altitude between 180 m and 555 m above sea level on the border of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. To the north it is connected to the city of Braunschweig by the A 395 and thus to the A 2.
