The estate, formerly the private residence of Louis A. Graves, was the creation of architect William C. Bull who designed many of the stately Victorian structures in the Shires of Vermont. Ten-foot ceilings, the mahogany-paneled library with ornately carved fireplace, leaded glass pocket door and bookcases, and the raised plaster moldings of the Dining Room make the South Shire Inn a showpiece in Southern Vermont Victorian Era.

This little glamping cabin with cozy woodstove is set at the far edge of a field overlooking a wildlife pond, seasonal fountain, and mountain. It is a peaceful place, surrounded by beauty, and special not just for these amenities but because it is improbably located on four private acres right in Manchester Center. The property abuts 70 acres of preserved land, but is steps from Main Street and all the shopping, dining, and outdoor options that this lovely year-round tourist town has to offer.

The space
This is a single room glamping cabin with no running water, and an outdoor camp toilet. It does have electricity and a wood stove. It is uninsulated. The windows and front door are screened. There is a charcoal grill, a fire pit, and an outdoor kitchen and wash station with a 5-gallon water drum and spigot. All dishware, utensils and grilling tools are provided. There is a French press for making coffee. We provide trash and recycling service. We provide wood for one night, and paper and kindling. Additional bags of wood are available for $10/ea. We will fill the water container before your stay, you are welcome to refill them as necessary at the main house. We provide candles and a lighter for the candle lanterns. We do not provide linens so be sure to bring your own sleeping bag(s).

Guest access
The cabin is private but guests may occasionally share the communal fire pit with us or our guests on occasion. Guests also have access to a shared hammock in the lower field by the cabin.

Other things to note
To be super clear, this is glamping! This space is heated by a wood stove only, and guests light and maintain the fire themselves. Please be prepared to start your own fire in the wood stove. The cabin is un-insulated so bring seasonal-appropriate clothing and sleeping bag(s). Even with the woodstove going, in the depths of winter it will not be as warm as an insulated, heated hotel room. Please choose this option because you want to glamp, not because you are looking for a cheap hotel room. And again, we provide a 5-gallon water drum if the weather is not below freezing, but there is no running water. There is a camp toilet in a tent outside the cabin. We do not provide linens, so guests must bring their own sleeping bags. If you're glamping when temps are below freezing, we may not be able to provide water for the dish wash station. Please note that there is an approximately 100 meter walk from the parking area to the cabin. Thanks!

The futon in the living area folds out and sleeps 2 adults. The queen size bed in the bedroom also sleeps 2 adults.

Keep it simple at our peaceful and centrally-located hideaway. This rustic and cozy two-story barn guesthouse with fireplace is located on four acres of a 1768 historic homestead right in Manchester Center. Enjoy the pond and mountain views from the bedroom and living room windows; the guesthouse faces a peaceful meadow and wildlife pond which abuts 70 acres of preserved land with hiking trails, yet it's also just steps from Main Street and all of the dining and shopping of Manchester Village.

The space
This is a rustic, cozy barn guesthouse. It has a small entry way, a living room with fireplace, and a kitchen on the first floor. Upstairs is a bedroom, closet, and small bathroom with shower under the eaves with sloping ceilings. The guesthouse is located in a peaceful, private setting, surrounded by nature, yet it is in town and just steps from all the amenities of the village. Parking is by the barn and the main house, and there is a relatively short, unpaved walk down to the guest barn.

Other things to note
This is a guest house converted from part of an old barn. The stairs are steep, and the upstairs spaces are under the eaves with low, sloping ceilings, including the bathroom and shower. In the winter the heat rises and when the downstairs is warming up on cold days the upstairs can temporarily get hot. Also, if the weather is going to be extremely cold overnight we may want to put a small heater under the sink overnight. Just want our deep winter guests to be aware of these little quirks.

We have wifi in the guesthouse and have a smart TV above the fireplace for streaming. There are also lots of books and games and it’s a great place to unwind. The famous Northshire Bookstore and café is within walking distance, and so many other wonderful places to eat, shop, and relax.

Please note that there is AC in the upstairs bedroom, but not in the downstairs. It is very rarely needed.

We also want to note that we have two dogs on the property. Ozzy, our young Aussie, is shy and he will probably bark every time he sees you unless you stay for an extended period and he gets used to you. Please don’t take it personally, he’s a lovely pet but an overly enthusiastic protector of the property. He’s friendly with other dogs and people after his bark-first-think-later instincts abate.

The Barn, situated behind our house, is located just a few minutes walk to the center of Manchester. It is a working studio setting with general living area on the main floor and a bedroom above in a loft. There is hot tub available to barn guest and a shared (with house) outdoor space. Very clean, very fun space with ample room, comfortable bedding. Perfect for two. (Note: Bedroom Loft is only accessible via a spiral staircase).

The barn is a multi-use building with a work shop on one end, our design/marketing office on the other. In the center is a general studio/work space with very comfortable sitting area, bed loft, kitchenette and 3/4 bath. Plenty of room to stretch out. TV, music system, high speed wi-fi is included. Hello! The Carriage House is located within 500 feet to a beautiful rail trail, just 2 minutes away from the famous Dorset Quarry and 10 minutes from Emerald Lake. We are 6 minutes from Manchester Center, but we have 18 acres with trails throughout the property. We enjoy both privacy and convenience. The space has its own back yard and fire pit. It is very private. You’re welcome to borrow our bikes, paddle board and kayak during the summer.

The space
The carriage house is conveniently located between Manchester Center and Dorset. We are near too many hiking trails and lakes to list here...just know it’s like driving through a painting in every direction. It has two entrances; rear stairs over the garage and another in the front that is ground level. It is best suited for 4 adults or a family with 2-3 children. We do not recommend toddlers because the stairs up to the second bedrooms are steep.

Guest access
You have access to the entire grounds which includes the West Branch of the Battenkill River (running through the property) and back field and hollow. It's surrounded by protected wetlands, but you can follow trails into the woods (which we’ve named Owl’s Head Forest) to see it...it's beautiful. There is a large field open to The Carriage House that is private for guests with another short trail leading to a private fire pit. You can sit by the fire and watch the stars and fire flies.

Situated on the first floor of the Carriage House, this elegant and spacious room was once the abode of the original owner's two horses - Jim and Dandy. Now completely remodeled, heated, and air-conditioned the room has hardwood floors, with a queen-size four-poster bed and working fireplace plus cable TV. The full private bath includes a jetted tub and a separate shower. A back door to the room opens onto a small exclusive patio - just the right spot to relax with a good book or a cocktail.

Located on the second floor of the Main Inn, the elegant Otto Room is the second of the Inn's two master bedrooms. Two of this spacious room's four large windows face North providing a view of the mountains. A king size canopy bed and original working fireplace (Duraflame logs only please) complete the luxurious feel. The full bath with its exquisite tile work is equipped with a soaking tub plus separate shower.

The space
This is a newly-created suite utilizing a carriage barn and a 1920s cabin. You're surrounded by old and new so that you can enjoy convenience of the modern world and the nostalgia of times gone by. The "Library Suite + Loft" is a great location for a family vacation—complete with a kids' loft of 4 twin beds—or a new work-from-home experience. It highlights an upper-level library of thousands of books; choose your favorite novel, tea from the kitchen, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with access to private front porch seating. The inventive space also features repurposed wooden wainscoating, rustic stairways, antique doors, and a modern kitchen with bar-seating to tie the open space together

Guest access
There is a very nice outdoor seating area with a chiminea out back. Also on site is a shared laundry room complete with everything you might need.

This renovated carriage house is one block from Main Street in historic Manchester Center and a 5 minute walk to a variety of restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities. Historic Manchester Village is a 5 minute drive. Bromley is a 10 minute drive and Stratton is a 25 minute drive. Guest privacy is respected by the hosts, who live in the original farm house and can quickly address guest concerns.

The Carriage House was part of a late 1800’s farm and is tucked away behind the host’s home, in the original farm house. Both structures have been fully renovated and updated. Guest privacy is respected and the host’s proximity enables them to assist guests if needed.

Located one block from Main Street, it is a 5 minute walk to outlet shopping, the Battenkill River Walk, the Northshire Bookstore, and many restaurant options including hearty breakfasts, Mexican, sushi, Thai, Italian, American, and coffee shops. If you are willing to walk 10 minutes, you can enjoy a traditional New England candlelight dinner in the quaint, circa-1790 Ye Olde Tavern. A pleasant 10 min walk past a pond and over a river will lead you to the Dana Thompson Recreation Park where you may play basketball or tennis, swim in an outdoor pool, enjoy a state-of-the-art skate/bike park and walk on a track or a trail. There is also a lovely playground for all ages. You may also connect to the historic Manchester Rail Trail for walking/biking.

Within a 10 minute drive to Dorset you will find machine-built mountain bike trails or swim in the Dorset Quarry. If you are a skier, Bromley Mountain is 10 minutes away and Stratton is 25 minutes away. Both have summer activities and events including the Bromley Thrill Zone and downhill biking at Stratton. Emerald Lake is 15 minutes away for swimming or ice fishing. Riley Rink at Hunter Park, a 5 minute drive has ice skating in winter and a year-round golf simulator. Manchester Village is a 5 minute drive and home to historic Hildene, Equinox Hotel and golf course as well as several fine dining restaurants.

About this Space

The old carriage house was originally used to store wagons and other farm equipment on the ground level with living quarters on the second floor. During the renovation, a full bathroom and bedroom (queen)were added to the ground floor. Guests will also find a small mudroom for coats, boots and ski equipment on the ground floor. A 12-step staircase leads to the second floor with a bedroom (queen), bathroom with shower, kitchen and adjacent dining area and living room.

There is an attached garage and gardening shed that are unavailable to guests.

Please note the following
One of the hosts has a well documented history of severe animal allergies, even with animals reputed to be hypoallergenic. For this reason, there is a strict no animal policy.

Given the second floor living area, the home may not be ideal for children, although they are welcome. The hosts have installed a safety gate at the top of the stairs but this may not prevent a fall down the stairs. Guests will find a Pack and Play and a single air mattress. You may have 4 adults and 2 children under the age of 12.
