Escape to this adorable cabin on 2 tree-filled acres in picturesque Julian. Perched atop the beautifully peaceful Pine Hills community and just a short drive to the quaint town of Julian. This one-of-a-kind hand-hewn custom log cabin which features two large master bedrooms, a picturesque window room (with bed), and a loft (with bed). the cabin includes a king bed, 2 queen beds, 2 full beds, and a cozy futon. Sleeping 8 comfortably (and 1 more on the couch if you want!). The kitchen is large and great for cooking.
This cabin is perfect for families or groups of friends. Enjoy the convenience of 3 bathrooms (2 full and one with a dry sauna, shower, and a large bathtub). Stay connected with WiFi, watch tv, stay comfortable with heating and AC, and take care of laundry with a washing machine. This is such a special place. Relax on the porch with your morning coffee, lounge or nap in the porch-swing-bed, take nice walks on the winding roads, and gaze out at the stars at night (very little light pollution!). Also, it's not uncommon to see wild turkey, and deer during your stay!
We hope you enjoy what our place and Julian has to offer.
NOTE: Keep in mind this community is surrounded by nature. The area strikes a nice balance between a safe community feel and a sense of being "out in the woods", but not isolated. There are neighbors in the community, but from almost all areas of the property other cabins/houses cannot be seen, given we're atop the hill and have 2 acres). You'll experience a nice sense of peaceful privacy. With the surrounding nature and our hand-hewn log cabin (with its charming quirks), comes a bit of a rustic experience, but with the comforts of home; Air Conditioning, heat, WiFi, TVs, and all the cozy amenities shown and listed above. Be prepared for the possibility of some bugs around the property (might wanna bring some bug spray in the summer months). This is nothing new to those who've stayed in cabins in wooded areas, but it's worth mentioning:) We look forward to hosting you! If you have questions don't hesitate to ask!
NOTE: No outdoor fires. It's the law in Julian. There is a large fireplace inside the you're free to enjoy; stop by and grab some Duraflames or some wood bundles often sold at the local gas stations or corner market in downtown Julian.
- "We thought it was a beautiful house with a ton of character. It’s just what you imagine a mountain house would be as far as wood ceilings, beautiful fireplace, and tucked into the trees. The house had a lot of space and was cozy. One of the upstairs beds wasn’t great but was ok for the one night. Overall would highly recommend. " - "Close to a lot of places to eat and spend time! Beautiful drive to cabin. Lots of critters and animal sightings while there which was awesome watching from Inside and the porch. Amazing kitchen!"

THE FOREST
Our small treehouse Cabin opens to the outdoors for views and direct exposure to the forest. This exposure to nature provides a wonderful inspirational relaxing effect. Japanese call it 'Shinrin-Yoku' which translates to 'forest bathing'. The idea is simple: If a person visits a natural area and walks in a relaxed way, there are calming, rejuvenating and restorative benefits to be achieved. Studies have documented reduced stress, lower blood sugar, better concentration, diminished pain, improved immunity...
Taking in this forest atmosphere has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Researchers have established a robust body of scientific literature on health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. Many trees give off organic compounds that support “NK” (natural killer) cells that are part of our immune system's way of fighting cancer.

This quaint cabin is 1.5 miles from the heart of historical Julian, CA. A private property, this is the perfect place for a couple's getaway, a nice family vacation or even just a group of friends looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. A fenced back yard is perfect for a dog (note: our neighbors have dogs), while the enormous front deck allows for a great hang out spot and night time star gazing. The cabin is a studio layout with a queen bed and queen sofa bed. The kitchen has everything you could need for your stay including a full size fridge.
The cabin is on its own property and is not attached or shared by any other building.
Forested neighborhood of Kentwood-In-The-Pines, in the mountains is quiet, lots of birds. (and wild turkeys!)
Winter note: please be aware that it can snow in winter and you should check the weather conditions and be prepared with chains or a 4x4. Our road usually gets cleared but not always (our neighbor has a snow plow). Locals often park at the end of the driveway in snow to make access to the street easier.
- "Would recommend" - "Matthew was extremely communicative and was helpful throughout the entire stay. Had a wonderful time at the property!" - "Although located in a neighborhood, we were able to look out the windows to trees and open the doors to the sound of the wind. It was very comfortable and well-equipped with a beautiful patio and a fenced backyard for our pup to play safely. There are extremely comfortable leather sofas, a nice dining table and an ear in kitchen with bar. Super cosy gas fireplace and nice TV. Everything was clean and well organized. Our hosts instructions were clear and easy to follow plus there’s a great information folder with everything you need to know about Julian which is a charming town with good restaurants and amazing pies!! Enjoy our spacious, beautifully-crafted open cabin with stunning views across our valley through two-story windows: an instant feeling of retreat! You can also feel good about your retreat knowing that 100% of the energy used during your stay will be powered by the sun using our solar water and solar electric systems.
We also own a three-bedroom house across the street, "The Wildflower." As our family has grown we use the two houses together so there's space for everyone; you could, too.
The spacious kitchen, outfitted with new stainless steel appliances and plenty of cooking tools, lets you enjoy meal preparations without missing out on any of what's going on. The generously-sized island makes both a great work area and a good place to hang out. The kitchen includes a microwave, two full-size ovens and plenty of gadgets for your culinary adventures.
Curl up on the loft couch or downstairs in front of the fire for a restful getaway. Get a group together to play board games or put together puzzle from our collection. Gather in our front room to watch a favorite movie on our 47' flat screen t.v. with Blu-Ray/DVD player. Spend a morning reading in the teak swing hanging in the oak tree just outside the kitchen window.
The two similar bedrooms feature queen beds, with luxurious and cozy linens (and the same goes for the pull-out sofas downstairs). The cabin is perfect for a family get-away, and includes a pack-and-play crib for the little ones.
Modern rustic tile in the bathrooms and showers compliments reclaimed antique vanities. The downstairs bath includes a spacious shower; the upstairs bath has a shower/tub.
A generously-sized balcony/deck spans the back of the house, accessed through two french doors. Teak patio furniture lets you enjoy this extra outdoor living space--perfect for morning coffee, outdoor dining, and stargazing at night.
The house features stunning custom work, including a rustic and elegant railing made from oak trees that grew on our property; solar water heating continues our commitment to eco-friendly choices. Whether you enjoy being outside hiking and exploring Julian or just want to stay indoors for a weekend of rest and relaxation, this house offers an experience of mountain retreat as soon as you walk inside!
Our home is located about 2 miles south of Julian's town center, and about 5 miles north of Lake Cuyamaca. On a beautiful hillside, it is a gorgeous vantage point for watching the seasons in Julian, and has easy access to town and to outdoor adventures. We apologize this home is not pet-friendly.

We also own and rent a three-bedroom house across the street,"The Wildflower." As our family has grown, we are grateful to have been able to add this cabin that was lovingly built by friends of our grandparents. When we're able, we use the two houses together so there's space for everyone; you could, too.
- "This was our first visit to Julian and to this beautiful home. There was plenty of space for our family of five and we truly felt at home in this lovely getaway. The home is well stocked with everything you could possibly need to prepare dinners, play games or just relax. We did a lot of all three!! My favorite part of the home is the large back deck that has an incredible view. And of course, the tall ceilings and windows which gives the place a very open, light and spacious feel. The deck is perfect to enjoy a morning cup of coffee and is shaded in the evening for dinners on the family size table. There is also a gas grill with provided propane for a BBQ. We loved being able to stargaze at night. There is one neighbor to the west (right side when looking out) that leaves their back porch light on all night which causes some light pollution, but there is still plenty of darkness to see hundreds of stars. The location is perfect, just two miles from town. Just far enough away to feel isolated, but close enough to make quick trips for dining out, shopping, or to pick up groceries. We were all very sad to leave, but I promised we’d return to make more family memories. You can definitely feel the love in the home and we are looking forward to returning again soon. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us! The Cope Family"

There is a Keurig on the counter and a regular coffee maker in the cupboard. There is a four piece toaster and a small crock pot, as well as the normal pots and pans. We have a limited supply of coffee and tea for your enjoyment. The front bedroom has a King bed with comfy bedding and pillows. There are even books if anyone wants to enjoy reading around the fire or outside under a tree.
WHAT TO DO: There are many wonderful restaurants, wineries, breweries and cideries around Julian. In the Info Book provided in the cabin, you will find lots of info and recommendations about them. There are some really cute coffee shops as well, and please don’t forget the famous apple pie as you are wandering around town enjoying the quaint stores filled with small town treasures. The hiking is amazing around Julian. Nearby, there are the Vulcan Mountain trailhead and Santa Ysabel East Preserve trailhead. A bit further are the hikes near Cuyamaca, including Stonewall Peak, and Laguna including Desert View Trail, and Big Laguna Trailhead. Julian is also a stop for some of the PCT hikers. Gold mining and gold mining tours are available. Julian is famous for their apples. Apple Days usually start in early fall where you can pick your own or buy from bins of all varieties. In early spring there are hills covered with daffodils and a bit later the lilacs fill the air with their beautiful fragrance. Julian is also certified as a Dark Skies Community and you will see plenty of stars in the night sky.
THE HISTORY: Our family has owned this cabin since 1939. Our Grandpa built it with lots of help from friends and family. It has been added on, redone and refurbished many times. It is filled with some of our family treasures for you to enjoy. We lovingly call it “Granny’s Cabin”, but you will find that it is filled with all the modern necessities.
- "Four of us gals enjoyed our stay in the sweet cabin! Charming and comfortable. Tammy was the best host!" - "We had a great time is Tammy's beautiful home. It was a quiet weekend of relaxation. Enjoyed sitting outside by the fountain and eating in the kitchen with the beautiful views. Tammy is very sweet and easy to get a holds of. Thank you Tammy!" - "Warm and inviting for my sisters and I who remember our grandfather's ranch and rustic home, but enjoyed the modern updates too."

- "The cabin is adorable. Rustic decor. Plenty of comfortable seating inside and out. Kitchen supplied as stated with plenty of cookware, table service, good stove, refrigerator, sink with good water flow. Full bathroom and supplied linen area. Pantry had extra TP, paper towels. Two bedrooms upstairs. Main had a comfortable bed, 2nd bed had box spring and a 3-4" foam pad, no mattress. Not as comfy but usable. There are extra fold out camp pads in the closet that would be comfortable for the kids. Mornings on the west deck were delightful, filled with fragrance and bird serenades. Coffee on the deck was perfect. Upstairs cools quickly with the cross breeze west to east. Check in and out were very easy. Location is perfect, residential yet private - you almost don't know there are neighbors. Easy access to Julian, Santa Ysabel, Anza Borrego Desert. Set up is pet friendly. We had a family dinner on Mother's Day that was wonderful. Everyone was comfy. Downside, things can be fixed easily. Outside needs attention - vegetation was tall, broken glass/mirror between front porch and utility shed. Upstairs electric was off but my son found the breaker box and had it back on quickly. Window lock in the master bedroom needs to be secured. Mice on the glue trap in the water heater closet need disposal. Overall we were pleased and hope to use the cabin again."

The historic city of Julian is just a few miles away, enjoy kayaking, motor boating, or relax by the lake, explore.
You will have a very refreshing and rejuvenating stay at this location and go back with a fresh bout of energy and enthusiasm to the daily grind.
- "Amazing cabin, perfect view of the lake. Cant wait to go back" - "Enjoyed our stay her here very much. Place was as advertised and no surprises upon arrival. May be a little short on furniture for a large family, but was perfect for us. Some deck furniture would be nice, since the view from it is what our trip was all about. Once again, great place and really enjoyed our stay." - "Our only issue which wasn't huge, wasn't a renter issue, it was a maid issue. So over all our stay was absolutely perfect! I've never seen so many shooting stars. It was a quick 5 min drive to fishing. Don't try and use the long driveway as it's very steep but there is parking available in front of the house. Its secluded enough while still being close to things we needed. The renter was very timely responding to messages and checking in was very easy."

About this space

The two-bedroom, one-bath cabin is just over a mile from the historic town of Julian, yet it’s a private sanctuary with panoramic forest and Volcan Mountain Preserve views.
The Enchanted Lookout is beautifully cleaned and sanitized after each stay.

THE STORY OF OUR CABIN
The Julian Chamber of Commerce describes the town like this: “Julian, a state Historical District, is a former gold mining village nestled in the mountain forest. Julian is San Diego County’s year-round romantic retreat.”
My children and I moved to San Diego five years ago, and one day my young daughter Samantha and I visited Julian. We were enamored by a sense of stepping back in time, and by the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains and forests.
We stopped by the Chamber of Commerce and noticed a tourism review of Julian written in 1870. Mary Morse, a schoolteacher from New England had arrived by horse and buggy and wrote:
“After passing a ravine and ascending a sharp and rocky hill, the city of Julian in all its glory burst upon us. The sun was just setting and shown with that golden light so peculiar to California. I could have shouted with joy at the very sight. The pines and oaks were a magic green and every cabin and shanty nestled amongst them had a strangely enchanted look.”
Samantha and I could not have described how we felt about Julian better, though nearly a century and a half had passed since those words were written. Later that day as we strolled past picturesque historic buildings and then down a quaint lane, my daughter turned to me and said, “Mom, will you always keep a cottage in Julian?”
After three years of searching, we finally found the right property. It's situated in a quiet forested neighborhood just over a mile from town. It sits at the end of a long drive on its own hillside facing Volcan Mountain. It's surrounded by old-growth pine, manzanita and several types of oak, so it has a wonderful sense of solitude and privacy. Historically built as a lookout site for volunteer firemen, the cabin overlooks a breathtaking vista of forests and mountains.
The cabin itself was in sad shape, but still captured the incredible charm and quality with its high-beamed knotty pine ceiling and picture windows in every room.
It took a full year of hard work extensively renovating and remodeling, including adding a new energy-efficient roof 50-year roof, rain gutters, foundation work, beautiful new decks, gutting and total renovation inside, but the end result was worth all the effort.
Every time we return to our cabin, we are comforted once again by a feeling of traveling back in time to a simpler era. The songs of mountain birds and breezes rippling through majestic trees fill our ears. The beauty of the forest and Volcan Mountain amaze us. It seemed natural to name our cottage “The Enchanted Lookout."
THE ENCHANTED LOOKOUT:
We recreated the home so that it looks like the historic home it is, yet contains every modern comfort and convenience.
Our two-bedroom one bath 600 square foot cabin feels larger than it is because of the high ceilings, large picture windows, and expansive views. It will sleep four adults and two children, but it is best with just one couple, or a couple with a child.
The new highest quality forced air heat and cooling system contains a whole-house air purification system with HEPA filtration for the cleanest possible air. It also uses the newest chlorine-free R-410A refrigerant system that is ozone-friendly and non-toxic.
We installed new 3/4 inch thick solid oak flooring so dust mites or other allergens found in the carpet will not irritate our guests.
HIGH-END APPLIANCES AND OTHER DETAILS:
1. A new Samsung range and convection oven with hood and counter-top microwave
2. A Bosch dishwasher makes doing dishes easy.
3. A retro red designer SMEG refrigerator
4. The kitchen is well-equipped with new cooking ware, blender, crockpot, electric teapot, and coffee maker. You’ll also find some rare antique utensils. Basic condiments, spices, and coffee are included. Each group also receives a little gift of wine and chocolate (red or white, dark or milk chocolate).
4. A Jotul Norwegian wood-burning stove decorates the living room if one wants to watch the flames dance and reflect off our new 3/4 ” solid oak floors, or push a button for forced air cooling/heat. Please enjoy our collection of vintage records!
5. A new apple-red LG brand stack-able washer and dryer is concealed behind sliding doors for in-house laundry convenience.
6. A gorgeous slipper-style porcelain tub looks like an antique but it’s brand new and includes a convertible tub/standing shower feature.
7. High-end mattresses and luxurious bedding invite sweet dreams.
We have a California King pillow top mattress in one bedroom, and a full-sized memory foam mattress in the second bedroom. Both mattresses have natural organic latex toppers for protection from allergens. Also, all pillows use allergen blocking covers.
Sometimes people want to bring up to six people, so in the living room, we added a beautiful leather sofa that pulls out to a queen bed with an upgraded jell memory-foam mattress. Please note the full-size bed sleeps children or a smaller adult only.
8. A luscious five-person Hot Springs Spa and sleek Saber grill wait to be savored on one of our large decks overlooking exquisite forest and mountain scenery.
9. High-speed internet lets us stay connected, and wall-mounted smart TV in one bedroom and DVD player and movies in the other.
10. Last but not least, we filled the now beautiful space with art, classic books and antiques, many of which we had discovered and restored ourselves.
A LITTLE HISTORY AND THE THE LAND:
Julian was founded in 1869 when a local rancher and former slave named Fred Coleman discovered gold. For thousands of years before that, the Volcan mountains, the area that is now Julian, and portions of the desert below were heavily populated by Native Americans, and evidence of their occupation is everywhere.
On hikes in the Volcan Mountains, we have seen ancient and massive oaks sheltering boulders pitted all over the surface with myriad large mortars (bowl-shaped holes in the stone once used by Native Americans to grind acorns and other seeds into a meal).
The cabin overlooks the dividing line of where the high forest becomes the high desert. It’s almost a straight line down the face of Pechacho Peak (The highest peak in the Volcan Mountains)… to the left is forest, to the right is desert. Views from The Enchanted Lookout are of forest and mountain but walk up the road a block and you'll see a fantastic view of the Anza Borrego Desert.
As a former student of Anthropology and Archaeology at UCLA, I was fascinated by what this geographic layout represents:
Indigenous people all over the world considered geographic boundary areas, where different elements met, (freshwater/saltwater, mountain/desert, etc) to be powerful places of healing, transformation, and restoration. They were thought to be important places to make decisions or guide life choices, and Native American vision quests were often held in such places.
Guest access
To get to the cabin, guests would take a short and well-maintained private road into an enclave of four houses that were all built historically as fire lookouts. The Enchanted Lookout is at the end of its own private drive, leading to a wonderfully secluded property. The capacity for drive serves two cars well. All parking must be done beyond my property line in my driveway. There is a “No Parking” sign in my driveway at my property line. Cars must be parked beyond that sign, closer to the house. This parking area comfortably accommodates two cars and no more.
The private drive is located off a shared upper parking area, though guests (two-car max) should park only in my drive and back in or out. If guests feel uncomfortable backing in or out of the drive, they are welcome to park on Volcan View Drive, the street above the house (again, not in the shared parking area please!). Please note these parking requirements.
Guests are welcome to browse our beautiful woodland and enjoy our decks.
Other things to note
PLEASE NOTE:
**** important***
Our policy states that hosts are not responsible to refund guests for any travel issues such as bad weather, guest illness, missed flights or any other travel issues. It is strongly recommended that guests purchase guest travelers insurance. This must be done at the time of booking. Here is the link:
Other things guests should know:
The cabin is meant for 2-3 people. The maximum capacity for the cabin is six people. We recommend only two adult couples at most. The third bed is only a full size that accommodates children or smaller adults. There is a $12 charge for each person above 3.
Also please note that we do not reimburse for weather or other issues that are completely out of our control, such as if it gets windy and SDGE decides to shut off the power, or if there is snow or ice or such. Note we have a wonderful whole-house heating Jotul wood burning stove case forced air is shut down if SDGE turns off power due to winds. We put it in not just for ambiance, but for function. We also have a great propane grill right outside not only for great grilling anytime but as a back-up cooking source.
- "We enjoyed our wonderful stay! First off location was excellent with open view of the valley below and Vulcan Mtn. on the far side. Cabin is secluded from the road above with its own private driveway. Your surrounded by a variety of oak trees and some pines that all rustle wonderfully in the breeze. The area is full of birds, blue jays, stellar jays, mocking birds, humming birds and a host of others. At the time of our stay in mid June there were a lot of butterflies and a constant gentle breeze. The spa on the deck is secluded as well and has an open view of the valley below and the stars above, a very romantic setting. The small cabin is very charming with beautiful old oak floors and open beam ceilings, furnished with beautifully maintained furnishings. The kitchen is fully loaded with cooking utensils, silverware, pots, and an excellent cast iron fry pan, plates bowls etc. The refrigerator is excellent and ads to the kitchens charm. The hosts attention to detail is excellent and shows in every room and is very responsive to questions. We are already planning to return here for another wonderful stay."

THE DARK SKY
Julian is one of two accredited Dark Sky Communities in California, and one in thirty overall. The intention of being a Dark Sky Community is to protect the natural night sky by reducing light pollution. This means that outdoor lighting is carefully designed and controlled to minimize glare and unnecessary brightness. By doing this, we can fully appreciate the awe-inspiring wonders of the night sky, including the stars, constellations, and even the Milky Way! Other than incredible stargazing, having a natural dark sky benefits astronomical research, wildlife preservation and our circadian rhythm. If you're interested, please check out Julian Dark Sky Network.
LIGHTING
The Den incorporates dark sky lighting inside the cabin too, which creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere while supporting your circadian rhythm.
The soft illumination creates a sense of intimacy and relaxation, while also allowing your eyes to adjust to the natural darkness outside. It's the perfect setting for unwinding after a long day or spending quality time with loved ones. With the use of dimmers, warm light bulbs and minimal overhead lighting, you control how bright or dim you want the space to be.
One of the best benefits of dark sky lighting at home is how it affects our circadian rhythm, which is our internal body clock that helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle. Now, here's the thing: exposure to bright or blue-rich light in the evening can mess with our circadian rhythm and make it harder to fall asleep.
Bright lights, especially at night, triggers our brain into thinking we should be awake as if it's the middle of the day. Whereas dimly lit, downward facing amber or red lights (similar to a campfire), promote melatonin production which tells our body that it's time to relax and prepare for sleep.
Wake up in the morning naturally with the morning sun and feel refreshed!
I would encourage you to bring the idea of Dark Sky Lighting back with you into your own homes and see how you feel.
THINGS TO NOTE:
- FIREPLACE FOR DECORATION ONLY, and is non-operational. There are (2) wall mounted heaters that pump out heat on those chilly nights, and a space heater. Plenty of extra blankets are also available.
- NO SHOES INDOORS. Kick off your shoes and take it easy. This not only keeps the home free of excess dirt, grime and toxins, but it protects the floors from tiny rocks that scratch, and you'll have a bit of reflexology when you walk around barefoot.
- SEPTIC. Please only use the provided toilet paper to flush, and nothing else. Otherwise, Houston, we might have a problem.
- NO A/C. In warm summer months, with all windows open and 3 fans blowing, the cross breeze helps to cool the house. Happily, the sun sets earlier and cools off in the evening - perfect for gazing up under the stars.
- ALL ELECTRIC. Take note when using the stove and keep temps around Medium and avoid High Heat on the pans.
- HIGH WINDS. We're up in the mountains and the winds can kick up to around 20 mph. Bring clothes to layer, especially after the sun sets.
- WATER CONSCIOUS. Julian relies on only 3 wells in the areas, which makes water a precious resource. Please turn off water while brushing your teeth, be brief while hand washing dishes, and try to keep showers brief.
- UPSTAIRS GUESTS. The studio is located directly below the deck and partial interior of the main cabin, the Dark Sky Den (which sleeps up to 4 people). You may hear the occasional walking above if the space is booked. Please respect their privacy on the upper deck, as they will respect yours on the lower patio. You may see people as you come and go. Give a wave and feel free to say hi, if you like.
- YOU ARE IN NATURE. There will be sounds like Woodpeckers hammering on trees, Blue Jays calling out to nearby friends, or gusty winds blowing through the trees. In the evening, you may even hear acorns or rain drops falling on the roof above you, or the occasional small animal climbing up a tree outside your window. You may see a deer or two, a fox or even a wild turkey. And please remember, there are also things like spiders, ants, flies, skunks, raccoons or wild cats.
- NO PETS. We are located on a hill, without a lot of spots for animals to roam comfortably to do their business. Coyotes and other Mountain Friends are frequent visitors to the area. Thank you for understanding.
Interior Design by Sara Plaisted at Nook Creative Co.
It's been a dream to design and host a vacation retreat space as a place to decompress from everyday stresses and relax back into a natural way of being. A spot that's close enough to major areas in Southern California, yet feels like you've been completely transported away from it all. Julian is where it's at!
After getting sick with cancer over a decade ago, health and happiness became a priority. There's no better health hack than getting back to basics with non-toxic living, being surrounded by nature, trees, animals and breeze.
And most importantly, creating experiences that make you just feel good. I hope to offer you a space to create memories and to leave feeling better than you when you arrived.
- "This place was what we were looking for, peaceful ,quiet and beautiful, looking forward to our next visit, thank you Sara" - "We had a great getaway to Julian and enjoyed staying in this cozy cabin. Sara is serious about the benefit of low light and unplugging. The bed was really comfortable and despite being one room, the cabin felt very spacious. " - "I arrived at the property at sunset. The view was so beautiful from the porch. I spent the next day just relaxing. My friend showed up Saturday evening and we had a lovely time making dinner and enjoying the atmosphere. We left Sunday. Thank you so much for the lovely place to stay."

The Den's incredibly cozy interior has a laid-back, yet elevated contemporary style, perfectly complementing the natural beauty & ambiance of Julian.
But the real star is the peaceful, panoramic view of Volcan Mountain, seen from the spacious deck & every room in the cabin.
The most picturesque aspect of the home is the sweeping 180 degree mountain views seen from the moment you park the car and walk towards the door. The Oak Trees and Volcan Mountain can be seen from the expansive deck and windows in every space from the Living Room to the Breakfast Nook to the Sitting Room.
The Den has 2 bedrooms and 1 full size bathroom, sleeps up to 4 adults, a couple and a child, or as a spacious retreat for two. No more than 4 guests allowed.
This custom-built, cozy 800 square foot cabin was built in 1962 and has had a couple of revisions along the way. It comes with some cool features and a handful of quirks. That's what keeps life interesting, right?
Throughout the home you'll see beautiful, high pitched wood ceilings, along with continuous flooring in every room. The walls are a clean warm white, and black accents provide a grounding element alongside the wood and natural woven elements. The space is intentionally designed to reflect a natural and casual lifestyle, blending the elements of wood, metal, stone, earth, air and fire. A combination of vintage, custom, hand-made and previously owned furniture pieces create a feeling of both old and new. Dark Sky Lighting inside the cabin creates a warm and inviting ambiance that makes you feel cozy and comfortable as you ease into a relaxing night at home.
*** Please note: This booking is for the Main Cabin and Entire Upper Deck. There *may or may not* be wonderful guests like you enjoying Julian in the private studio below - located underneath the deck which is accessible by exterior stairs off the driveway. 2 separate spaces and entrances. Please send me a note to check and see, and I'll be happy to fill you in. If you'd like to bring up to 6 guests, or reserve the entire property, please book Dark Sky Den WHOLE HOUSE. I would love for you to stay!
Let me tell you more about the Den...
LIVING ROOM
The minute you walk in the door, you'll see Volcan Mountain just behind the tops of Black Oak Trees, seen through a wall-to-wall picture window. A (non-operable) fireplace in the corner is surrounded by large stone walls and a pair of Selenite crystals. There is comfortable seating for 4 with a small sofa and 2 side chairs. The Entry Table doubles as a Desk for anyone interested in working remotely. Although I would encourage you to unplug from devices and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones and nature, there is a TV with Netflix and high-speed internet available.
KITCHEN
The Kitchen is cute and compact, with plenty of creative spaces. Feel free to bring plenty of food and snacks. There is a full size refrigerator and freezer, an electric range (stove and oven), and a small dishwasher. For extra counter space, there's a pop up cutting board. All glasses and extra kitchen supplies are located in the two slide out drawers at either side of the custom mural, painted by a good friend. Coffee and Tea are provided. There is a kettle and French Press along with a petite coffee maker. Simple cooking supplies are provided, such as electric cookware, utensils, plates and bowls, along with salt, pepper, olive oil and red pepper flakes. Also a small crock pot, toaster and full size blender are available.
BANQUETTE DINING
One of my favorite sweet spots in the house, with windows on all 3 sides that allow a slight breeze in through the gauzy cafe curtains. 2 bistro tables easily accommodate seating for 4.
SITTING ROOM
Located between the Living Room and First Bedroom is the Sitting Room. I find myself hanging out in here often. Maybe it's the double doors that open on to the deck with views of Volcan, or the ambient lighting at night. Whether it's to have a slow start to the day and enjoy a morning coffee, or to relax in the afternoon and take in the colors of the sunset, this is a very tranquil room. The 2 Lounge Chairs fold up and can be moved to accommodate more space if you'd like to stretch or simply need more free space.
BEDROOM 1
The King Size bed faces a modest window overlooking the hillside of oak trees and a mountain landscape. A second window offers a close up view of a Coulter Pine Tree used as acorn storage for the Woodpeckers. You'll recognize them as the black and white birds with a striking red cap. Decorative elements include small business artisan touches like the black and white woven wall tapestry above the bed, and the touch turn-on ceramic wall sconces that cascade light and shadow onto the walls, creating a starlight experience.
BEDROOM 2
Just through the back hallway sits a cozy little room with a full size bed. Perfect for one, or for those who love to cuddle. A woven light pendant hangs in the corner, casting shadows and decorative light against the walls.
BATHROOM
The spa-like bathroom is covered in wall to wall stone tiles for the ultimate retreat space. Enjoy the combination shower and tub, pedestal sink and 2 open shelf bookcases to hold all your toiletries and bathroom needs.
PATIO DECK
Spend your days AND nights on the deck, surrounded by trees, birds, easy breezes, and star filled skies. With over 180 degrees of breathtaking views, there is an outdoor dining table for 4, lounge chairs and soon a propane fire pit. Also available is a small propane BBQ.

So, whether you're an avid stargazer, a lover of nature, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of a starlit sky, Julian is the place to be.

- "Owner was very easy to work with (attentive, respectful , and prompt communication) Property was nice with a lot of potential but (in our opinion)should be repaired, cleaned, and better stocked before renting out. In that regard, the rate is rather high. We still enjoyed the cozy nook for our family gathering."

This mountain cabin was once owned by one of the Historic Bailey family members who are very famous in Julian, CA. It sits at 3350 feet approximately. The cabin has been updated. There is Starlink internet and a playground. The standard setup is for five Guests. The house sleeps four to five Guests total with one or two Guests in the master bedroom. The Zen room has a full size bed.
The space
There is a trail that goes around the ten acres you can walk, bike or run. There is also a labyrinth walk. There are two patios. The small inside gym has a bike and a rowing machine. There are small weights and a yoga mat. The Space includes a four bedroom and 2 1/2 bath house. The first bedroom is the master with a private bathroom in the room and there is a queen size bed which sleeps two Guests. The second and third bedrooms each have one twin bed. The bedrooms are small. The fourth bedroom has a full bed for one and has a wood fireplace. It has a thin curtain and wood for a wall that looks like a "Zen Room" or a Japanese room. It is a not a real room. This Zen room is not sound proof. Anyone who sleeps in this room can maybe hear activity going on downstairs, so quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am. There is a half bathroom downstairs.
The space(s) is ultra-sanitized. Please let us know if you have any questions about our cleaning methods.
The playground is shared with one other listing that is approximately 300 feet away.
Dual pane windows mute the gentle hum of the two lane country highway about three hundred feet away. Traffic slows here because the posted speed limit is thirty five miles per hour.
The gas clothes dryer is a full service one and it is $5.00 up to 50 minutes of drying time. This is available 9 am - 6 pm. The last load of clothes drying is at 5 PM to finish by 6 PM, with exceptions to the service hours when agreed upon. Give your host two hours notice if you are interested in using the full-service dryer service. The washing machine is self-service and it is free. Guests provide laundry soap, because laundry soap is not included.
Guest access
We offer self-check-in. Your host is available whenever needed.
The property/land is available to our other listing as well and it is shared. You are welcome in any part of the more than ten acres of the property!
Julian is a registered "Dark Sky" community and the residences and businesses use very little light in order to see the stars and Julian, is one of the few places in the U.S.A. you can see the Milky Way. Because of this, it is very dark at night and there are no lights leading to the home. We encourage Guests to arrive early and get oriented. There is a telescope here to use.
Shared Spaces & Spirit of Connection
This is a home of openness, where warmth and presence are felt in the little moments we share. The common spaces are held in the spirit of connection—alive with the gentle rhythms of daily life. Our cabin is located in the historic town of Julian, California; close to apple pie, wine tasting, craft beer and gold mine tours. T's is just 2 miles east of town in the quiet neighborhood of Whispering Pines. Built in 1928, it is a cozy, rustic mountain cabin perfect for relaxing and watching the wildlife, including deer, wild turkeys and a variety of birds from the deck. Personal touches that make it feel like you are staying at a friend's place, it's perfect for couples and solo adventurers.
The space
Here are some of the features our special place:
Built in 1928 the cabin was originally just 1 room with an outhouse! The beautiful wood floors and windows are original and add a rustic feel to this comfortable space.
*Bedroom: has a comfy queen size bed that is soft with a memory foam topper. There is a very small closet with hangers and shelves provided for your items.
*Kitchen was remodeled this past summer, Tom did it all himself! It is fully stocked with pantry items, basic condiments, snacks and bevies. I do my best to keep coffee/tea, juice, oatmeal and yogurts available for your breakfast. There is a fridge, stove/oven, Keurig coffee maker, electric kettle, toaster, mini-blender and microwave.
*Bathroom: situated just inside the little bedroom, it’s been uniquely remodeled with river rock flooring, hammered copper sink, a rustic barn stall shower and Minnesota barn wood vanity. Plenty of towels and toiletries are provided for you.
*Freestanding Fireplace: is lovely and romantic. Duraflame type fire logs only, the first one is provided for you.
*Front deck with 2 chairs, perfect for watching the birds and deer as they come through the yard.
And, T's Place is pet friendly with no additional pet fee! Fur babies love the cabin but it is important to note that they may not be left alone at, or inside, the cabin. Even in their crate. This is rarely an issue as Julian has become a very dog friendly town!
This cabin is best situated for 2 adults as it is not kid-proof and no baby or child amenities are provided. However, exceptions are happily made, and extra bedding for the couch is available upon request. Feel free to contact me before booking.
Nightly rates and minimum stays may be increased during holiday periods and discounts are offered to repeat guests. Be sure to contact me with any special requests or questions before booking. Also be sure to see the "Other things to note" below.
I'm looking forward to sharing my Happy Place with you!

You will have the little cabin all to yourselves. And, please help yourself to anything.
Other things to note
*To avoid any disappointment please note that the cabin is not "in town". We are an easy 2 mile drive from Main Street Julian.
*There is no street parking. Please pull up the driveway and park on the property. Large vehicles, such as vans and RVs, will need special instructions, check with me before arrival.
*We do not have snow removal service for the deck or driveway. In the event of a heavy snowfall it will be necessary for you to shovel the driveway in order to park. Please check the forecast, as well as road conditions, and contact me with any concerns.
*Fires in the fireplace will not be permitted during summer, fire season and Santa Ana weather conditions. Thank you for understanding and helping keep our neighborhood safe.
*Our cabin has some of the most beautiful and serene settings you'll ever find, but due to the rural nature around us you may find some mountain dust, cobwebs and critters during your stay. We do our best to keep these away, but if you happen to spot a few, please remember that critters and insects come with the territory. It does not indicate a lack of cleanliness on our part.
*Our property is open, there is no fencing or enclosed area.
*The cabin is located in a small mountain town with limited internet options. As a result the wifi can sometimes be temperamental. This is completely out of our control and therefore your understanding and patience is appreciated.
*This is not a finely curated, as-seen-on-social-media, chalet. It is a precious 95 year old cabin that was handed down from my father. It is drafty, and creaky (like me) and is full of memories and family heirlooms. Perfect for getting cozy and making your own memories.
*Since this is also our second home, that we come to frequently, you will find T's Place is more like staying at a friend's cabin. We hope you will enjoy this unique aspect of our place. In addition to amenities we leave for you, a few of our personal items are at the cabin as well. Cheers!

Indigenous people all over the world considered geographic boundary areas, where different elements met, (freshwater/saltwater, mountain/desert, etc.,) to be powerful places of healing, transformation, and restoration.

Airbnb policy states that hosts are not responsible to refund guests for any travel issues such as bad weather, guest illness, missed flights or any other travel issues. It is strongly recommended that guests purchase Airbnb’s guest travelers insurance. This must be done at the time of booking. Here is the link:
https://www.airbnb.com/resources/hosting-homes/a/understanding-travel-insurance-for-airbnb-guests-529
Privacy:
The Enchanted Lookout is in a very quiet neighborhood off a seldom-used street, only one and a half miles from town. It sits on its own private hillside overlooking woods and Volcan Mountain. The lot next to the house is only woodland and on the right side woodland blocks neighbor's house from view; other than a glimpse of their deck. Please note that though the neighborhood is very quiet, occasionally one might hear people's voices or dogs barking.
Of course this is a mountain cabin surrounded by trees and nature. Very Occasionally one may see ants or spiders. Please keep that in mind when booking.
Essentials • Hot water • Indoor fireplace: wood-burning • Hangers • Dryer • Shampoo • Iron • Central air conditioning • Hair dryer • Free washer – In unit
Our place is close to parks for hiking and biking, restaurants and dining, gold mining, the Historic Julian town and beer and wine tasting. Lake Cuyamaca is a short drive away where you can rent a paddle boat or test your fishing skills. You’ll love our cabin because for a mountain home, it has a refreshing amount of space for all to spread out and relax without feeling crowded. It has the perfect mix of vintage charm with modern amenities and the game room entertains kids and adults alike.
The space
NOTE as of 2024 this is now a THREE bedroom, see below for details.
This is the home you picture when you decide to spend time away in the country! It is located in the beautiful wooded neighborhood of Pine Hills, about 4 miles from the historic town of Julian at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet. Once you enter, you find a delightful mix of the old west and country chic. The open well-lit living room draws you in to a comfortable and rich area with couches and chairs circling the propane fireplace. The dining room just calls out for the family to pull up a chair and sit together over a home cooked country meal. The open floor plan allows guests to dabble in the kitchen while visiting with others in the living room and dining area. There is even a bar ready for you to pull up and sit for a while. The kitchen is a delightful step back in time, while boasting all new appliances. The sink is an amazing old washtub and the cabinets mix a touch of old and new. The appliances are top of the line stainless steel which include a large refrigerator, a dishwasher and electric oven/stove.
There are THREE large bedrooms and two full bathrooms plus a half bathroom. The master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom has a king sized bed and an attached bunk room with a pocket door for privacy. The second bedroom has a queen sized bed and a large en-suite bathroom. The final bedroom has charming twin beds, perfect for kids or those who enjoy their own sleeping space. There is also a pull out queen couch in the family room.
If you want a little time off to yourself, you can tear yourself away to the lovely sitting room with more chairs and a couch where you can curl up with your favorite book, work on puzzles, or watch a movie on the television. Although this already is enough for any fabulous getaway, throw in the huge game room in the back of the home. There is a full size ping pong table, plenty of sitting room and comfortable furniture for bringing the entire group together for real family time. Everyone can sit and watch the ping pong game, visit with each other, curl up in a chair or on a couch, and just enjoy. The home also has a large pass through window directly from the kitchen, so while everyone visits, snacks, treats and tasty delights can be passed through to all the guests. Note** The game room is not heated/cooled so in cool/hot temperature it will not be very pleasant.
As the sun sets you will want to step outside and look up at the night sky…there is nothing like the Julian sky at night. Without the distracting glow of the lights in the city, the sky is blanketed with so many stars that feel as if they are close enough to reach out and touch. Deer wander around the property, as do wild turkeys and a host of other wildlife. You will also notice the apple and pear trees, we invite you to eat some while you are there. As guests, you will simply melt into the surroundings and find all your stress and worry floats away. A calm and quiet will surround you and you will never want to leave the mountain.

180 View of the Oak Trees and Volcan Mountain can be seen from the expansive 500 sf deck, and windows in every space from the Living Room to the Breakfast Nook to the Sitting Room.
The Den has 2 bedrooms and 1 full size bathroom, which sleeps up to 4 adults, a couple and a child, or as a spacious retreat for two. No more than 4 guests are allowed to stay.
Let me tell you more about the Den...
UPSTAIRS: Private Entrance with Smart Lock
Fireplace is for decor only.
PATIO DECK - 500 sf
Spend your days AND nights on the deck, surrounded by trees, birds, easy breezes, and star filled skies. With over 180 degrees of breathtaking views, there is an outdoor dining table for 4, lounge chairs, propane BBQ, sun/star loungers and a propane fire pit.
Imagine stepping outside on a clear night and being able to see a breathtaking display of stars stretching across the sky. That's the kind of experience you can have at the Dark Sky Den. It's like having your own personal planetarium.
So, whether you're an avid stargazer, a lover of nature, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of a starlit sky, Julian is the place to be.
- WATCH YOUR STEP. Both bedrooms have a small step down into the room. We've added glow in the dark caution strips to help remind you in the night.
- SEPTIC. Please only use the provided toilet paper to flush, and nothing else. Otherwise, Houston, we might have a problem.
- NO A/C. I've recently added a window AC unit along with an outdoor roller shade over the large Living Room windows. In warm summer months, with all windows open and 3 fans blowing, the cross breeze helps to cool the house. Happily, the sun sets earlier and cools off in the evening - perfect for gazing up under the stars. However, there are a few times in the year where the weather can reach up to 100.
- DOWNSTAIRS GUESTS. There is a studio located down the stairs and below the deck: the Downstairs Den (sleeps up to 2). The entire upper deck is yours alone - for your use only of the BBQ, Loungers, Outdoor Dining Table and Fire Pit. If you would like to book the second space for up to 6 guests total, or would like the added privacy, please let me know. Otherwise, give a friendly wave. We're a very friendly community up here. : )

The Den is located just off the road down a long driveway, which is shared by 4 other homes originally built as fire lookouts (because of the views!). Parking is available for 2 cars max, and parked in tandem close to the house. I have a small hatchback and have always had an easy time accessing the driveway. In snow, well that's another issue!
The front door code allows for self-check in.
You'll have access to the entire upper floor cabin and deck, along with a shared small lookout area just below.
There is another studio - the Downstairs Den - located at the base of the stairs and under the upper deck. Please respect the privacy of the guests on their patio. Give a wave if you see a friendly face pass by.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:
Airbnb policy states that hosts are not responsible to refund guests for any travel issues such as bad weather, guest illness, missed flights or any other travel issues. It is strongly recommended that guests purchase Airbnb’s guest travelers insurance. This must be done at the time of booking.
Search Airbnb Resources for "Understanding Travel Insurance for Airbnb Guests"
GUESTS:
This cabin is perfect for 2 to 3 people, or 2 adult couples at most. This allows for the most comfortable stay and does not overload the home. Do not attempt to add more guests because the space (and septic system) will not accommodate you.
WEATHER:
Julian has 4 full seasons and The Den sits at 4,200 elevation. Please check the weather ahead of your travels and prepare accordingly.
- Spring (March to May) is when the area comes alive in full spectrum! It's jaw dropping to see the trees and flowers in blossom everywhere you turn. Days are warmer and turn pretty chilly as the sun sets. Dress in layers.
- Summers (June to Aug) are warm (80's - 90's), and can be hot at times (high 90's) but much cooler than the desert. The cabin does not have AC (plenty of fans available, with cross ventilation by windows on all sides).
- Fall (Sept to Nov) colors are incredible and picturesque. The air gets crispy and cozy. The best time for apple picking, and doing all those fun Fall things!
- Winters (Dec to Feb) come with breathtakingly beautiful snow and sometimes heavy rains. This may also make travel into the area and driveway difficult without the proper vehicle or supplies. Check
The area is prone to high winds at times, anywhere between 5 to 20 mph.
NEIGHBORS:
Please be respectful about noise. Although there's distance between us, we do still have neighbors. And because we're on top of the hill, sound carries. You'll believe me when you hear the early morning birds having their town hall meetings! ; ) You may see an occasional car drive pass by to the home next door.
OUTDOOR SECURITY CAMERAS
There is a security camera located outside on the corner of the main house, facing the driveway, stairs leading to the house and the area directly in front of the door. Another camera on the deck is for remote weather viewing only, capturing the mountain in the distance (no view of the deck itself). 3rd camera is located downstairs at the Lower Entry Patio.
You'll feel instantly at home in this warm, comfortable, dog-friendly, 3-bedroom 2-story house in Julian. Whether you want to relax and enjoy the beautiful views of trees, mountains and wildlife, or go to town for shopping, pie, good food and wine, beer or cider tasting, you'll have it all. Peace and quiet, fast WiFi, barbeque and fun games just a short drive from Julian, Lake Cuyamaca or Anza-Borrego.
Note: Owners may stay in basement (separate entrance) and use one of the two yards for dogs.
The space
Guests have access to the entire house excluding the basement, as well as the 270-degree deck and 1.2 acre property.
Other things to note
Deer and turkey go through the property on a regular basis, providing your own nature show right from the house. Mornings and early evenings are the best time to spot them.
