Sea View Cottage is a modern holiday home located in the vibrant tourist town of Donegal. Situated on a small hillside overlooking Donegal Bay the holiday home is 250 meters from the waters edge and just over 1km from the Diamond - the historic center of Donegal Town.
The cottage effectively has the best of both worlds - a peaceful setting yet with all the amenities of a top tourist town within walking distance.
Meenasillagh sits beside its own stream & waterfall.
The new open plan living room & sleeping area has floor to ceiling windows and stunning views.
Our nearest neighbour is way over the hill so you'll be completely undisturbed during your stay.
The cottage and water is heated by stove using turf/ wood. A complimentary bag of each will be available on arrival.
The kitchen and shower room are modern and well equipped. There's a gas-powered fridge.
The space
This is a delightful secluded Eco-cottage renovated and cared for by the Woods family since 1978. With original stone cottage whitewashed rooms and a modern spacious extension visitors can enjoy old and new living spaces.
Type 'meenasillagh donegal blog' into your search engine for a history of the cottage, lots more photographs and information about the area.
We have our own spring. It's a fantastic resource. The crystal clear water arrives out of the mountain right beside the cottage and supplies us by way of a newly fitted solar pump.
The place sleeps 6. There's a choice of beds. The two double and single half loft bed are supplemented by a settle-bed with sheepskin mattressing. It comfortably sleeps a couple of kids and it's always been our kids #1 sleeping spot. There's a fold-out 'click clack' bed if you prefer to use it.
This is fantastic walking country. Set off in any direction from the cottage and you won't be disappointed. There's expansive mountain, sea and valley-scape to find yourself in - or get a little bit lost in.
Kids always have a great time here mucking around in the waterfall, shallow stream and pools beside the house or venturing into the surrounding countryside.
We don't fish but there are lakes galore in the area and the sea is just down the road. There are rods and tackle at the cottage if you want to try your hand.
The poet Dylan Thomas and artist Rockwell Kent both spent time living in a converted cow shed in nearby Glenlough valley (see photos) Kent went there to paint; Thomas was trying to dry out.
The cottage has excellent 3G mobile phone reception so if you need to you can stay in touch with the outside world via the net. You can charge devices using the house solar charger but we recommend you bring your own battery pack as backup.
We had the opportunity to connect the cottage to the national grid 20 years ago but at Meenasillagh we prefer to keep things as low tech as they've always been. No TV is a big plus as far as we're concerned. This is a place where you can truly escape information saturation and the effect is fantastic - time seems to slow down here and a few days somehow feel like a packed week.
There are small rechargeable solar lights in the cottage but we mostly use candles (suplied) and the light of the fire.
There's no bin collection in Port valley so you’re expected to remove your rubbish, recyclables and any perishable food left over from your stay. There are recycling containers near Glencolmcille. It's up to you if you want to leave scraps out for the local fox and badger population (see blog 'flora & fauna' page for video of badgers at the cottage)
There's no vacuum/ cleaner in the cottage or the valley for that matter so we need a firm commitment from every guest to leave the place as clean and tidy as you found it. For anyone unfamiliar with washing up in this age of the dishwasher there's a sud by sud description in the cottage user manual of how to do that. The stone and tile floors are very easy to sweep/ mop and the stove's back boiler will give you plenty of hot water for washing up.
All bedding, tea towels and house towels are provided if you want it. If you want extra large beach towels you'll need to bring those with you. Our laundry is done in nearby Ardara town and guests will need to collect bedding from the lovely, computer brained Margaret at Ardara Dry Cleaning & Laundrette and return it on departure.
For more info and contact details please find us on our social media account that's known by the letters F & B! - our 'handle' is Meenasillagh Donegal. For a link to our blog please get in touch and of course feel free to ask any questions before booking.
Guest access
House, gardens, stream, waterfall and endless mountainside.
Other things to note
If you've been to Donegal before you'll know how variable the roads are in width and condition. The road to Meenasillagh townland is tarmac'ed but pretty bumpy (although there's no need for a 4x4) The lane up to the cottage is windey but its safe and easily negotiated by car. Please refer to photographs to get an idea of what to expect.
There is no mains electricity so lighting is by candle, torch and the light of the stove. We have solar rechargeable light bulbs but rarely find the need to use them.
Our water comes from our own spring - the only one we know of in the valley. It's delicious and completely safe so you won't need to buy bottled water as is usually the case in the area.
The water pumping system is state of the art solar powered.
When sheep are in the surrounding pasture there are three farm gates to open and close on the driveway. During the summer months when the sheep are on the mountain 2 of the gates can be left open. We're in the process of planning installation of a solar powered gate motor system but for now you'll have to get out and open by hand. Kids are great for this so try to bring at least one along!

Just three minute’s walk to the Atlantic Ocean , our charming, rough little cottage sits alone in an iconic location, above the wild, smooth-stoned beach and tiny harbour of An Port, Donegal. It is a brilliant hideaway in a breath-taking landscape.
The space
This ocean-edge home is offbeat, off-grid, and very nearly off the map. There’s only one rough road to A Port, Donegal – and the nearest neighbours are three miles up the valley.
With no mains electricity, we generate our own 12V power from solar panels , and keep warm with traditional stoves and ingenious hot water systems. Some might call it primitive, but we don’t - we reckon it provides some of the greatest luxuries you can have in an over-loaded, high tech world.
Holidays in An Port, Donegal are wildly old-fashioned with no power to spare for electronic games or TV, but there's plenty of fishing, swimming, scavenging, messing in streams and waterfalls, walking, and getting really muddy. Lots of extreme sports too - rock-climbing, kayaking on the door-step - and surfing not far away- for those who've a mind to.
NB - there is No 220V power in the cottage - the plugs by the snug were for my old marine radio , and have been disconnected for years.
Inside:
An Port,Donegal follows its traditional lines, with a central room with a fireplace, cosy lovers' nook, with sheepskins, and long table for eating. A large hatch opens into a simple kitchen with gas stove, sink and running hot and cold water.
This is a simple, mod-con-free, and genuinely eco, zone. A small amount of power comes from the solar panels – enough for a 12V. few lights Our water comes into the house from a hillside river, and we heat it at the back of a wood-burning stove. We have no fridge - food is chilled in the outside larder and milk/drinks in the stream. This is an important part of the simple charms of Port, but it wouldn't suit anyone too "power-hungry".
Bedrooms – we have a master bedroom and ensuite, and a double-bunk room with ensuite inside the main cottage.
The Snug by the stove in the Living-room , covered in Kenyan sheepskins, can be easily converted into a lovers' nest, or kid's corner.
We keep warm with two wood-burning stoves inside, but in the coldest times, it never gets to modern home temperatures. Also, the house is old-fashioned, without an even surface or wide door anywhere, so we're afraid the property is not generally suitable for the disabled or elderly.
Outside:
An Port,Donegal has a small grassed stonewalled area – and couple of stores - and to one side is a large traditional sink for cleaning fish, washing surf/snorkel gear etc. But the main outside is the rest of the valley, which surrounds the cottage. Streams, waterfalls, rivers, immense cliffs, heather'd hillsides - and not a single other house in sight. You can walk for miles along the coastline, through valleys people don't go into for days, or weeks on end.
Nearby:
Beaches: 25 minutes drive to Maghera's huge sandy beaches and caves, 35 minutes drive to the perfect crescent beach of Silver strand . 45 minutes drive to Tramore, and Bundoran, both surf beaches.
Glencolmcille, the closest village, is 20 minutes drive or an hour and a half’s brisk walk across the hills. Glen, as its called locally, has a lively pub, a cultural centre (music and Irish classes) and often great live trad music. It’s also a very spiritual place, with ancient standing stones scattered around the village.
Ardara - the closest town, half an hour’s drive away is really friendly, and good fun in the evenings, with loads of pubs, live music and the best fish and chip shop in Ireland (the West End Café). Great shopping if you like woolly jumpers or tweed.
be sure to get a Molloy Blanket before you leave - woven with all the colours of the Donegal landscape.
Access:
Most people would be very glad of a car, because there is very little public transport round here, nothing at all from our valley. Buses from Glencolmcille, in the next valley, are irregular and seasonal.
Airports – there are a few flights into Derry and Donegal airports, but most people come via Dublin or Belfast. Ferries come from Wales, Scotland, France and Spain to Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, `Cork, Belfast or Larne.
Important facts to note :
The road to An Port:
The road to the cottage is tarmac'ed, though rough and bumpy , but four wheel drive is not necessary, unless in the snow! It is also reachable by mountain bike over the hills. But, most people are glad of a car here, given how remote it is, if only as a charging point for phones/cameras.
Car also helps in terms of bringing in Fuel/supplies etc.
Availability:
we are open All year round - and there s always something sublimely beautiful about An Port, no matter the weather.
Minimum 1 week stay in general, though weekends available out of season.
In our opinion , it really isn't worth getting all the way here, immersing yourself in the glorious remoteness of it all, only to turn around and leave!
Guest access
Communications:
There is a mobile signal in An Port, Donegal, from various odd spots around and in the cottage - and you can always invoke the Glengesh Rule (see in our house rules) if you prefer to be without :) - NB there is no 220V power in the cottage ( sorry if I seem to be repeating myself here !) , so any phones/cameras need to be charged from your car.
Other things to note
POWER / WATER :
The cottage runs on Solar Panels for electricity and Gravity for water ( from a stream up the hill).
The power is limited ,like Irish sunshine, and sometimes runs out. But that's when the romance of candlelight comes into its own.
Power is all 12V DC - which means that there are NO 220v plugs for charging phones or running computers etc .the plugs in the snug were for my marine radio- now disconnected.
Repeat - No power outlets for charging Computers/phones.
Pls be sure to bring a car-charger for your phones etc.
Head-torches are strongly recommended.
Hot water is independent of the solar / electrical system - if you light the fire in the stove , you will get Hot Water.
Fridge / Freezer : there are none. please use the outside "larder" by the back door. this keeps stuff pretty cool - or the Stream nearby works well for chilling beers / wine.
Our 18th century thatched cottage sits on a quiet road on Ranny Hill facing Glenalla mountain. It's an ideal base for touring, hiking, pony trekking, or just getting away from it all. The area is close to some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in Ireland.
There are approximately 1,800 traditional thatched cottages left in Ireland.

The barn next door and outhouses are being used by the owner.
There is a plenty of space for parking to the front of the cottage.
To the back is a wild area, including a beautiful native hazel wood.

Cashelnagor Railway Station is a beautifully restored Station House and Waiting Room.. Built in 1902 it was home to a long line of station-masters and their families until the railway closed in 1947. Derelict for over 60 years, the building has now been completely transformed. We lovingly searched the country for old furniture and fixtures and installed modern conveniences to complete what is now a truly 'old Ireland' experience.
It's an ideal base for exploring the Wild Atlantic Way
The space
The building now houses two independent accommodations. The main house (this listing) is where the station-master and his family once lived.
The Station House can now accommodate 8 guests in two bedrooms; the downstairs double bedroom is en-suite and the upstairs bedroom has a double bed and bunk bed. The views from the upstairs bedroom are amazing with one window looking towards Errigal and the other towards the Atlantic Ocean and Tory Island. The large living room, with sofa-bed can comfortably accommodate two. The traditional kitchen and dining room can cater for groups of up to 8 and the kitchen has all the utensils you need to cook a family meal.
We sourced furniture and finishing from all over the country to create a comfortable and traditional style home. Both dining room has a traditional Stanley No 7 stove and the living room also has a stove. The building has central heating throughout. We we have chosen not to install a TV so that visitors can enjoy the experience a true peace and quiet.
Prior to restoration the building had only half a roof, no windows, doors, floors or stairs and much of the plaster-work had disappeared. The building never had running water or electricity so one of our first jobs was to work with the utility companies to install these 'modern' amenities!
Guest access
Guests have access to the full station house. The adjoining 'Waiting Room' is an independent one-bedroom apartment and is also available to rent on airbnb. Both units have their own entrance doors and share the parking and garden space.
Other things to note
The building experience a new lease of life in the early 1990's when it was used as the setting for the movie "The Railway Station Man". Staring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland the movie was based on a book written by Jennifer Johnson. However, the renovation was only temporary, all windows, doors, and roof were removed and the building once again stood lonely for almost another 30 years.

Note About the Wood-Fired Hot Tub:
Our hot tub is a “labour of love” and takes 6+ hours to heat up. It requires tending to the fire every 30 minutes and stirring the water to keep it at the right temperature. We recommend starting the process the night before. It’s more work than a regular hot tub, so please set your expectations accordingly. Let us know if you need any help!

Unwind at our peaceful, stone-built cottage with stunning views over Mulroy Bay. Relax in your private hot tub, enjoy our hot-stone sauna (reserved exclusively for guests at Davey Johns Forge) or have a movie night in on your home cinema. Set between Milford and Carrigart, just 20 mins from Letterkenny, the location is popular for exploring Donegal’s beaches and beauty spots. Our cosy home is a great choice for couples, families, or golfers visiting Rosapenna or St. Patrick’s Links.
The space
Welcome to The Cottage at Davey John’s Forge – a lovingly restored traditional cottage with both sea and countryside views overlooking beautiful Mulroy Bay.
Inside, you’ll find three peaceful bedrooms (one king upstairs, one double downstairs with an adjoining room offering a set of bunk beds and a travel cot), a cosy living room with wood-burning stove, home cinema and a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to self-cater in comfort — oven, hob, microwave, air fryer, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster, and a nespresso machine. The dining space is ideal for gathering with a glass of wine after a day exploring. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and complimentary toiletries. The entire space blends rustic charm with thoughtful modern touches — from soft throws and wall art to smart lighting and books by the fire. Often described by our guests as a 'home from home'.
Step outside and you’ll find a private hot tub overlooking the hills and the beautiful mulroy bay — the perfect place to watch the stars. There’s also a patio area with a large ceramic egg BBQ, outdoor seating, and access to a hot-stone sauna, set nicely in its own stone building near the forge itself.
The location is ideal for exploring North Donegal. You’re perfectly placed between Milford and Carrigart, just 20 minutes from Letterkenny and a short drive from popular beauty spots like Dunfanaghy, Ards Friary, The Atlantic Drive, Downings Bay, Doe Castle, and Glenveagh National Park.
Golfers will love being close to the Rosapenna Golf Resort, home to the world-class St. Patrick’s Links, as well as Sandy Hills and Old Tom Morris courses. Whether you're after hiking trails, beach days, or peaceful time to unwind, this cottage makes the ideal base.
We provide fast WiFi, private parking, fresh linen and towels and most importantly a warm Donegal welcome.
Guest access
You’ll have full, private use of the entire cottage, hot tub, and outdoor seating areas during your stay. The hot-stone sauna is shared with our two nearby cabins and is available to our guests exclusively. There’s plenty of free off-street parking right beside the front door for easy access.
Please note the larger bedroom located in the roof of the cottage is accessed via the stairs from the hall. They're a little steeper than normal stairs and we would advise older guests or anyone with mobility issues to take this into account. The door at the top of the stairs that leads into the bedroom is quite low and you will have to stoop your head to gain access. Once inside the ceiling opens up and the room appears quite spacious. I'm 6,1 myself and have no issues staying in this room when I'm at home.
Other things to note
Your cottage includes towels and robes for the hot tub and sauna. If you’d like to take a robe or towel home with you, feel free — we just ask for a contribution of €100 per robe and €10 per towel.
The hot tub is available for your private use 24/7. The sauna too is available round the clock and is shared with 1 other cabin and the cottage.
Ceramic Egg BBQ Use
We’re delighted to offer guests access to our ceramic egg BBQ grill — it’s a fantastic way to cook outdoors and really savour the Donegal countryside. These grills are self-cleaning: once you heat them up, any leftover food or grease from a previous use is burned off at high temperatures, turning to fine ash.
To prepare the grill, simply:
Open the vent at the bottom and lid fully to let airflow in
Light the charcoal and allow it to heat up for 10–15 minutes until the flames stop and you have nice hot coals.
Use the metal brush provided to gently sweep off any remaining particles on the grill once hot
After you’re done cooking, please:
Close the lid and let the remaining heat burn off residue
Once cooled (24 hours later), take out any loose ash with the small scoop provided and put it into the metal bucket.
Our cleaner doesn’t service the BBQ between guests, so we kindly rely on users to leave it ready for the next visitor. Thank you for helping us keep it clean — and we hope you enjoy using it as much as we do!
The property sits next to the road in a quiet, rural location, with the sounds of birds and occasional sheep — but you’re never far from shops, restaurants, and stunning Donegal coastlines.
Pets and children are welcome at Davey John's. We want to make sure that you get to enjoy the cottage as much as we do so we'll do everything we can to see that you have a great time.
