Accommodations: The Hilltown is a historic, recently renovated, traditional farmhouse plus additions, stable and farm buildings on 50 acres of actively farmed land - four bedrooms, two and a half baths - sleeps up to twelve.

Description: William McKinley, born in 1882 in a thatched cottage a mile from the Hilltown, emigrated to the US, and then returned to purchase the Hilltown in 1928. His reason? He wanted his expanding American family to learn of their roots. His parents and some of his siblings are buried in the Drumhome Churchyard on the hill directly opposite the house. Three of his grandchildren, the current owners, have rehabilitated and modernized the house from top to bottom while striving to retain the charm and feel of the traditional Irish farmhouse which they experienced as children. The house is located on a hillside with panoramic views of long, green, drumlin hills at the head of the Donegal Bay. These hills in turn are framed by the Blue Stack Mountains some 15 miles distant.

In mid-summer, when all is in darkness around the house, the tops of the Blue Stacks are often bathed in the sun’s last orange rays. Murvagh Beach, a three-mile strand on the South side of the bay, where the tide recedes for up to one quarter of a mile, is minutes from the front door. Donegal Golf Club, locally known as Murvagh Golf Club, is a superb links course described as the Muirfield of Ireland and is located about one mile away. What else does one need?

We had planned on a day trip to Bundoran but weather did not permit. Everything you need and more to self cater is provided for and all the instructions and info that was emailed before we arrived Ll was of great help. The main visitor attractions are Glenveagh National Park , which is one of six national parks in Ireland. Situated in the Northwest of Co. Donegal, Glenveagh encompasses some 16,000 hectares in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains.( which can be seen from the house) Such a great wilderness is the haunt of many interesting plants and animals. These lands were managed as a private deer forest before becoming a national park in 1975. The derryveagh mountains are just a walk away, and cater for all levels of hilwalkers.
Ionad cois locha Dunlewy is also another You can take a step back in time and visit the homestead of the world renowned weaver Manus Ferry and enjoy stories of times gone by from our experienced tour guides or take a trip out on the Dunlewey Lough on our tour of the lake where you will pass the Guinness estate (keep an eye out for the green lady who is said the haunt the house) If you prefer to stay on dry land you can take a ride on our train and for those who have plenty of energy to burn off we have an adventure play area full of swings, slides, climbing frames, zip-wires, rodeo bull, climbing walls, kayaks, and bouncy castles.

The beaches are renowned for their surfing waves, kayaking, or for just relaxing.
The two main mountains both Errigal and Muckish are 20 min away, and both are on a par for different climbing abilities. The views from both summits are fabulous, don't forget your camera.
This part of donegal provides stunning scenery, entertainment, both during the winter and more so during the summer months.

We offer a get away from it all experience, a place to relax in remote surroundings and recharge yourself, the road to us reflects this! ie its a bit rough n bumpy in places, but we hope, worth it when you get here! I recommend arriving by car as we are a 5km trek uphill from the main road/nearest shop/pub but i can usually help out with a lift if needed

Within the property of 18acres there are two vintage caravans, ( each only 2 people occupancy) and the Into the West mobile cabin ( which sleeps 4)

We offer a get away from it all experience, a place to relax in remote surroundings and recharge yourself, the road to us reflects this! ie its a bit rough n bumpy in places, but we hope, worth it when you get here! I recommend arriving by car as we are a 5km trek uphill from the main road/nearest shop/pub but i can usually help out with a lift if needed

The Robin Suite lies in my 100-year-old cottage, where Red Hugh O’Donnell’s horses once drank from the yard’s well. A carving of him still watches from the tree above. Shooting Star Barn is a converted traditional Irish threshing barn situated at the end of a private lane in a very tranquil scenic area with a stunning view of Muckish mountain - Donegals very own table top. Perfect for those seeking a secluded hideaway close to beaches, mountains, forests and stunning countryside.

The space
The barn consists of a large open plan living area with a double bed, sofa and TV with DVD player to watch our large collection of classic movies on (please note there is no TV signal). There is also a games area featuring a full sized American pool table. The kitchen dining area consists of basic cooking facilities with a freestanding 4 ring hob oven with grill, kitchen table and chairs, small fridge freezer and all pots, pans, crockery and cutlery required to enjoy your stay – there is also a basic larder provided (condiments/tea/coffee/pasta/rice). The barn is heated by oil which is managed from our cottage adjacent to the property. There is a small bathroom with shower and amenities.

There is a seating and alfresco dining area out front where you can drink in the stunning view of Muckish mountain along with your favourite wine.

Guest access
We'd love for you to treat our Donegal converted barn as a home from home. Our own cottage and a few other outbuildings are on the same land these are for our own use and not accessible to our guests.

Other things to note
We are centrally located in a beautiful part of Donegal and we have some stunning walks on our doorstep in lanes around a traditional Irish working bogland. With only a ten minute drive to Glenveagh National Park, Ards Forest Park, Dunfanaghy village and the beaches at Downings and Atlantic drive this is the ideal location for a peaceful or active holiday - your choice! It would also make an ideal artists retreat with an abundance of outstanding natural beauty right on your doorstep. For cyclists, climbers and those who want a more active holiday this is a great base to explore the surrounding areas.
The barn is approx. 3 miles from the local village Creeslough which means ‘Belt of Lakes’ and you will see why when visiting the area as we are surrounded by fantastic trout fishing lakes (permits available online in advance). There is also a convenience store that opens to 10pm most days and stocks most items you may need during your stay. The village also has a campsite, a few cafés, ice cream parlour, two pubs and a takeaway. There is also a large hardware store, pharmacy, health centre, schools and church.
A visit to Glenveagh National Park is a must which is an area of outstanding natural beauty and if you are very lucky you may see a Golden Eagle soaring above Glenveagh Castle during your visit.
Your visit would not be complete without a trip to Ards Friary and Ards Forest Park both of which are approx. 10 mins drive from the house. Ards Friary is a working Franciscan retreat nestled at the edge of Ards estuary and overlooking the entrance to the Atlantic. There are some wonderful walks and a very nice café for your well-deserved coffee and tray bake after the walk.
Ards Forest Park is an Irish national park that has a multitude of walks to suit all types from casual walkers to more experienced hikers. The park itself has a bird sanctuary, marshlands, beaches, a playpark and is the perfect place to visit in any weather…on hot days this can get busy so get there early. Ards Coffee Tree takeaway coffee shop is in the car park of Ards Forest Park with lovely picnicking and barbecue areas throughout the park, so bring your own packed lunch or disposable BBQ and enjoy the views! Please note there is a 5 euro entrance fee payable by debit card only.

Finally you will find Dunfanaghy village and Carrigart/Downings close by both of which have stunning beaches and a choice of sports such as kayaking, surfing, golf and horse-riding alongside places to eat out and pubs. Letterkenny is only 20 minutes drive where you will find plenty of shopping choices, restaurants and pubs.
