Teachín is a traditional stone wall Irish cottage located in Ballinacleava (Baile na tSleibhe) in the hills 2 miles outside of Downings and on the Wild Atlantic Way. The cottage is in a rural location (in a Gaeltacht area) and is perfect for somebody seeking relaxation through peace and quiet. The nearest neighbours are only occasionally at home and are located 200m away. When guests arrive, often the first comment is to reflect on how quiet the location is.
The cottage was fully renovated a few years ago in a style that brings its heritage value to the fore. The cottage has 2 double bedrooms and a bed deck with skylight to the rear that is suitable for age 10 and up. There is a living room with eating area, kitchen, shower room, a boot room for those wet days and muddy walks and a small utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. As we wanted to keep the heritage of the house as much as possible we do not have central heating, instead we have a stove in the living room and energy efficient electric radiators in each bedroom and the shower room. The living room is a very cosy environment and perfect for lazy days and relaxing times together reading, playing games or watching TV together, while listening to the crackle of the fire in the stove.
The house has a parking area suitable for two cars and a large garden for relaxing in and reading or just sitting to take in the stunning view over Sheephaven Bay, the Ards forest park and Muckish mountain.
The house is ideal for photographers as we still have a relatively dark night sky to the rear (north) of our house. As the address of the house suggests we are situated on a small mountain and the cottage is a good base for hill walkers. Downings is a 35 minute walk away by road while Dooey (Dubaih), Tra na Rossan, the Singing pub and Melmore Head are all within a few hours walk away if you are prepared to walk over the mountain through moor and heather. For the more serious walker the Glenveagh mountains home to Errigal, Muckish and the poison Glen are just a 30 minute drive away. Glenveagh Castle and National Park are also well worth a visit. In the park there are mapped out trails and guided tours available.
For golfers the Rosapenna hotel and golf course is located just three miles away.
The Rosguill Peninsula also provides opportunities for water sports such as windsurfing, deep-sea diving, sea angling & boat charters. The Jaws Watersports shop located in Downings and Dunfanaghy also offers courses for children and adults. A day trip to Tory island can also be booked via the Tory Island ferry.
Letterkenny is just a 40 minute drive away and the walled City of Derry 60 minutes.

Regarding pets, if you have a pet and are interested in staying in the cottage please send me an enquiry over the website and we can discuss the request.
- "We enjoyed our stay in the cottage" - "It was difficult to reach the house, but once you had arrived you never wanted to leave: a dazzling view and no moment the same...the house itself had tasteful furnishings and colours and a good working stove. Also a good place to start walking (first to make a trip bij car to reach the starting point)." - "We’ve just returned from a 3 night stay in what can only be described as an idyllic cottage. Everything you could expect from an old Irish cottage with the added bonus of a few modern extras to make it even more comfortable. We were very lucky with the weather so breakfast and supper in the garden was a must taking in the surrounding breathtaking scenery. Far enough away from the main town of Downings to enjoy pure tranquility but still close enough if needed. We visited 7 different beaches within the area, each one more stunning than the next. Murder Hole being our favourite and Dunfanaghy and Ballymastocker close second. This cottage is definitely worth a visit if you wish to escape from it all. Would definitely return."

- "I rented this house so that family and friends could all stay together for a week in Donegal. The house did not disappoint, it had enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone and we could seat eight for dinner when friends came to visit. There were movies to watch for quiet nights in, it’s a very generously appointed house. Kathy was brilliant to deal with and responded to questions really quickly. We will definitely try to stay here again."

The Area:
The area has superb beaches and has fine views across Sheephaven Bay to the Ards peninsula (with the remains of Ard House on the point of the peninsula) and the distant flat-topped peak of Muckish. It has a long standing tradition of tweed making and fishing. Downings is traditionally an Irish speaking area where you are likely to hear Irish spoken but English is the language generally in use. Sheephaven Bay has interesting walks and drives and is ideal for water sports and deep-sea angling. The Rosapenna Championship Links Golf Course is just half a mile from Downings village.
The rugged landscape of the Rosguil Peninsula also provides the basis for many activities for tourists to enjoy, including miles of golden sandy beaches and water sports such as water Skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, deep-sea diving, sea angling & boat charters. Other activities include, horse riding, pitch and putt and hill walking.
Downings has a newly built modern leisure center called Magherabeg Leisure Center, which is open to the public and features a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and gym. For gifts and souvenirs pay a visit to McNutt’s tweed shop and factory outlet or Joy’s of Carrigart. McNutts also have an excellent coffee shop beside the tweed factory.
Within a half hour drive of the holiday cottage there are numerous places to visit. You have Glenveagh National Park, Ards Forest Park, Glen Lough, Lough Salt, Lakeside center at Dunlewy, all of which has something for everyone. Nearby in Dunfanaghy there is the Workhouse famine museum. Churchill has the famous Glebe House & Gallery and Colmcille Heritage Centre. Letterkenny has all the amenities you would expect to find in a large town - cinema, museum, theatre, leisure centres, art galleries and excellent shopping centres. A day trip to Tory Island is highly recommended.
- "Inverberg No 2 is tucked into a sheltered spot with a stunning view straight down Mulroy Bay to Carrigart. All three living spaces offer comfortable places to watch the constantly changing views of the bay and the hills beyond. Seals, birds, and boats all add to the scenery. Angela has a wonderfully presented property with all the essentials (and even a few extras to make sure we felt comfortable right from our arrival). We comfortably self catered, although there are plenty of welcoming looking spots within a few minutes. All the bedrooms have large and comfortable beds, en-suit bathrooms and with bedding and towels (and beach towels) provided, there wasn't nearly as much to squeeze into the car! There are beautiful sand beaches a short walk away - sunset over Rossan Beach is a treat, but the walk along the sandy beaches just North of the cottages is lovely too. We also enjoyed visiting Fanad Head and Horn Head. Ards Forest is a fabulous combination of forest and beaches. The weather also allowed us to tackle Errigal mountain - so many beautiful things to see, it took us about 3 hours up and down. The trail is really well maintained, dry and manageable - it is ~500m vertical ascent in 2 miles of hiking (many many steps!). We brought bikes (there's shed), and cyclists can practice their climbing! Heading up to Lough Salt and back over the EV1 route from Milford to Glen is really rewarding - or just a circuit of Downings via the Westerly coast for the views towards Horn Head."
