- "There were no instructions about how to turn on or adjust heat or hot water. Some dishes were not clean. Kitchen was missing some essentials (no coffee maker, no salad spinner, no covered casserole dish, no salad bowl,. But the washing machine leaked badly, gushing water. The drying rack was broken. This well situated cottage has three bedrooms and once things are fixed and the house instructions are you improved it could be ok. A table broken since October has not been fixed 6 months later.I have never offered a negative review but this house was not up to anyone's standards. "

County Galway’s winner, for three years running, of Ireland’s Tidy Towns competition, the village of Abbey offers two pubs and a supermarket, and a monastery dating back to the 11th Century, from which the village takes its name. Portumna is nearby, offering good fishing and watersports, while the medieval town of Loughrea is host to several shops and pubs, two 4 star hotels, an 18 hole golf course and a lake, renowned for its fishing. Gort, is a medium sized market town on the Galway-to-Ennis Road, situated in a gap between the Slieve Aughty Mountains and the Burren to the south. There is a strong tradition of Irish music in the locality and many pubs stage sessions at night. With the cosmopolitan delights of Galway city and the popular beach at Salthill also within driving distance, this is an ideal touring base.

Our cosy cottage is set in a peaceful location at the base of Slievemore Mountain, Dugort. We are only a short distance from Silver Strand beach, historic deserted village, water sports, horse riding, Keem Bay and all the action of Keel.
Holiday or WFH? Ideal for anyone wanting to experience the beauty of Achill while staying in a charming, stylish cottage.
The space
Our home is one of a small number of holiday cottages situated at the base of Slievemore Mountain, Dugort. Slievemore dominates the area and there are beautiful views of it towering over our house. Slievemore is a special place, often with the clouds sitting low giving a sense of tranquility and peace. The only noise you will hear are from the local sheep and birdsong. We are but a short walk to Silver Strand, our favourite beach on the island. There are views of Minaun Cliffs and Keel in the distance. A short drive will take you to all the action that the island has become renowned for.
This is our home from home and we use it regularly. It is by no means perfect-it is not a luxurious hotel but instead a simple cottage on a western island that we are continually upgrading. We aim for it to feel like a place where you can relax and unwind, away from the pressures of everyday life. A place where you can engage in all the pursuits that Achill has become famous for, or where you can simply relax by the fire or watch the amazing stars in the night sky. BUT if you are looking for hotel 5* standard perfection, our cottage is not the place for you!
Our home is bright and airy with exposed timber floorboards and warm muted colours. Cushions and throws are dotted around. Wifi is available, free of charge.
The cottage comprises a kitchen with dining table to seat 8, sitting room with open fire and direct access onto the patio. A lovely new kitchen, with all new appliances, has recently been installed.
The sitting room opens onto a second living space which we use as a playroom/den/workspace. It is separate from, but directly connected to the sitting room. There are a number of toys, board games, books (for both adults and children) in this room, which you are welcome to use, as long as you treat them well.
There is also a small workspace in this room with office chair, if WFH is needed and the Minaun cliffs can be seen in the distance from this space. It doubles as an arts & craft station so expect some ‘artwork’ on the desk! It is well lit and the wifi connection is of very good quality. A sliding door gives some privacy, if needed.
The two bedrooms are comfortable and welcoming, with new beds and good quality bedding. The master bedroom has a king size bed. We have a chest of drawers in this room and hooks on the back of the door for clothes storage. Our en-suite has just been completely renovated and upgraded and includes an electric shower. There are beautiful views of Slievemore and the sea in the distance from our master bedroom, which is dual aspect. The second bedroom is a cosy space with a triple bunkbed- double on bottom with single on top. There are drawers underneath for storage. A perfect room for children.
We hope you enjoy our home as much as we do.
Guest access
Guests have full access to the entire cottage.
Private outside patio and communal gardens surround the cottage.
There is off-street parking immediately outside the property.
Other things to note
This is a quiet location- no parties allowed.

The Old Fisherman's Cottage, an escape by the sea.
The Old Fisherman's Cottage has been our family home for many generations and has recently been renovated making it the perfect island home.
Located in the sleepy little village of Dugort, the cottage is set between two beautiful beaches and backs right onto the Atlantic Ocean. A truly rare and stunning setting.
The cottage is a traditional Irish build, white washed and renovated by local craftsmen. The interior is stylish and elegant; a stove warms the main room with its welcoming glow and personally commissioned portraits, paintings and art pieces decorate the rooms.
The views from the kitchen, dining room, master bedroom and bathroom are simply stunning...The Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes like a calm glass lake and sometimes an angry tempest, it is ever changing. Visitors find themselves enchanted by the views of the ocean, the odd fisherman's curragh rowing by, a small local trawler to an occasional yacht or small ship sheltering from the storms. If you're lucky you'll see playful dolphins flipping about and performing just for you!
You'll find a well positioned bench at the bottom of the garden, closest to the sea, the perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of tea or a glass of wine in the evening (although you may need a warm sweater)!
Or why not fill up the picnic hamper with goodies and head down to the beach for a perfect afternoon on the sand.
Back at the cottage you'll always be lovely and warm, if you don't wish to light the fire we have full central heating throughout and the whole place is triple glazed.
Guest access
You will have the whole cottage and grounds for your own personal use (you'll usually have the whole beach to yourself too).
