- "I appreciated having a place to stay for 5 days. I was in town for a funeral. We upgraded to a cabin from a standard king room due to space. It was rustic and cute, and provided a safe place for us to sleep. The entire property is really pretty, and it’s great that this is a pet-friendly lodge! This message is more for the new company that owns Elkhorn Lodge: I sincerely hope you put earnest investment into this lodge. There is SO much potential there. Along with that, it would behoove you to treat—and pay— the manager/employees well. I imagine it is hard to find help in Chama because the population has decreased drastically, but what few you have will be running and representing Elkhorn, and it’s best to take care of them; as well as the property. The property needs some TLC but it is well worth it! "

Adventure off the beaten-path to discover the Upper Brazos Community, a vintage collection of cabins in the tall piney woods near Chama NM. The Getaway is a rustic A-Frame cabin built in 1964 as one of the original dwellings in the Upper Brazos. It was constructed with “mountain life” in mind utilizing durable finishes, a gas burning heater, a huge fireplace, and a sunroom that fills with glorious morning light and connects to a large covered porch that boasts the best views of the Brazos cliffs! The cabin has beautiful pine ceilings, an open kitchen with a farmhouse sink, walnut counters and industrial stools and a gathering table for meals by the fire. The primary suite downstairs offers a beautiful bedroom with view of the woods and an adjacent utility room and bathroom with a Saltillo tiled shower. Step up the winding staircase to explore the spacious Bunk-room with plenty of room to stretch out, play and rest.
Recently the interiors were renovated to retain its original warmth & charm while updating the interior surfaces, fixtures, furnishings, and installing high speed internet. Now you can enjoy the wooded scenery from a stately Writer’s desk in the sunroom, the view of the cliffs from the upstairs loft “cuddle couch”, or relax into one of the big leather chairs in the living room to read a book or stream a new movie.
The Getaway is a retreat, a refuge from the hustle & bustle, an invitation to slow down and reconnect with nature (while remaining as connected as necessary with free high-speed internet). Built at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level the cabin is nestled amongst tall evergreen trees with a deep set porch facing an acre of lush meadows cradled by surrounding mountains! The meadow provides abundant wildlife watching (deer, birds, fox, bunnies, prairie dogs, and occasionally bears) plus room to sprawl out in the sunshine or dance under the stars. Guests love the sunset views of the cliffs, listening to the afternoon rain on the porch’s metal roof, the sounds of the many birds, and the river flowing nearby.
Are you feeling adventurous? It’s only a short hike to the Brazos Cliffs private community RIVER ACCESS area where you can lounge on its sandy banks and fish trout from its abundant waters. Guests appreciate how chill and unpopulated it is! Bring your outdoor gear, park your ATV’s or RV’s in our big circle drive, and sprawl out. Also, relax knowing we have strong internet & phone capabilities and for any medical concerns we are within the Chama, NM emergency response area.
The Brazos Cliffs community is mostly inhabited by seasonal homeowners who grew up spending their Summers here with their grandparents who originally built in the sixties. It’s pretty quite in the Cliffs most of the year except for a few months in the Summer when you’ll occasionally hear ATV’s passing by, folks walking their dogs, laughter from an evening fish fry or the distant clanks of a game of horse shoes.
For leisure at The Getaway you can wind down with a game of washers, clean your catch of the day at our outdoor fish-cleaning station, and prepare your meals in our thoughtfully appointed kitchen. Eat fireside indoors or indulge in outdoor dining on the covered porch where you’ll witness a phenomenal cascading sunset on the cliffs.
The Getaway invites you to RELAX, RECHARGE, RECONNECT, and RE-WILD!
Additional information: The Getaway cabin is located down a dirt road off the rural HWY 512 which runs into HWY 84 and offers a short drive (15 minutes) to the grocery store, restaurants, and the iconic passenger train in Chama, NM. Otherwise we’re about an hour South of Pagosa Springs, CO, about 1hour and 45 minutes to Taos, NM and 2 hours to Santa Fe. The kitchen has a big sink, dishwasher, stove with oven, and refrigerator. It is thoughtfully stocked with cooking, cleaning, and serving accoutrements including handmade ceramic dishes, baking pots & pans, a blender, mixer, microwave, toaster, tea kettle, coffee pot, and a stocked Nespresso machine for all our strong coffee lovers. The bathrooms are stocked with plush towels and gently scented moisturizing products and a first-aid medicine cabinet. The beds and fold outs are comfortably outfitted with quality, breathable bedding.
The central area of the Bunk-room has a pair of twin beds and a futon, plus a small sturdy desk and plenty of carpeted area to stretch and play. There’s a half bath and a separate room on each end. The back room is set up as an office and is stocked with games, books, and drawing supplies. The front room has a comfy sofa and a window with a view of the whole one-acre property.
This is a CONTACTLESS PROPERTY with a keyless entry (the door has a digital keypad for the bolt lock).
If you have an extended stay (beyond a week) we will offer maid service to clean and restock your amenities.
Whether it’s a short or long visit, we hope you love your stay at The Getaway!
Side Note: Behind the cabin is a pottery workshop. It’s set back and out of view from the main Guest areas. Occasionally we need to throw pots while guests are enjoying the cabin. If so, we’ll never intrude or even be noticed.
On the upside, if you’re interested in pottery and want to take a look at our process or finished works we’d be glad to show you around. *If you want a pottery throwing lesson or just an opportunity to play in clay, let us know and we can arrange that for a fee. (Activity fees are based on $60/hour.)
- " The Getaway is a rare find - an opportunity to stay within walking distance to a good, long stretch of the Brazos River while being in a sophisticated and comfortable home. We came to fish, relax and enjoy the wildlife and it did not disappoint. The house is well-appointed and we did a fair amount of cooking - we love to cook - and all the tools we needed were handy. Since it was just the two of us, we used only the downstairs and it was so nice to have everything, including a lovely bedroom, on one level. The walk to the fishing area is not long - just across the street and down the hill. A good path system through the forest allowed us to try several fishing areas - where we did catch two fish! The surroundings are lovely - a view of the Cliffs that is just like a postcard. We saw lots of deer, which was great. An easy jump-off point to the lakes and Chama and more fishing available on the Chama River. Thanks for the lovely stay - we also loved the fireplace as the nights were wonderfully crisp."

To the south you'll see the 10,000-foot mountain known as El Pedernal, which Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her paintings, along with much of the near landscape.
Our Casita was built in 2008, and designed by a local architect in a southwestern yet modern style. It's fully furnished for comfort. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a Bosch gas stove with heavy gauge grills for those who really love to cook.

- "A wonderful spot, quiet , dark and so peaceful. Everyone loved waking up to the sunrise over the mountains and the sun hitting the red rock of Ghost Ranch. We took some wonderful walks and loved the cows and the coyotes." - "We were looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights after days of snow adventure at the Taos Ski Valley. My husband and I stumbled upon Vista de Lago and the pictures really captivated us. We've rented cabins and condos before but never tried a house surrounded by serene nature, away from the crowd! We had the 3 kids (teenagers) with us, and our Goldendoodle. The drive from Taos was already scenic but we were in awe as soon as we entered the Abiquiu lake area. It was a sunny afternoon when we arrived and everyone took their phones right away to take pictures of the hills and views of the lake! My 2 girls started collecting rocks and making rock formations! Even our dog was inspecting the rocks and the new terrain, running around freely! At night we were worried the kids will be bored because there was no cable, but who would need cable?!! After dinner we just chilled and chatted for hours, then watched a movie together from the DVD selection available. In the morning we watched the sunrise together and hiked around the area after a good breakfast. It was chilly in the morning but eventually warmed up to become an absolute perfect day. We were a bit worried about cayotes (from another review) and heard a couple of howling and bear-like sounds at night but realized that the community was fenced so should be safe. We were still careful though during our strolls as we had our dog with us unleashed. On the day of our checkout it started snowing and it was another sight to enjoy! Thanks to Larry for giving us this experience and sharing their beautiful house! He was quick to respond and gave us all needed info. We definitely recommend this vacation home and hope to return soon!"

'It was all so far away--there was quiet and an untouched feel to the country and I could work as I pleased.' Georgia O'Keeffe
Serenity abounds at Casa Bonita, where it is easy to see why this country had such a profound impact on Georgia O'Keeffe. Light and open, this modern adobe rests on ten acres overlooking Abiquiu Lake towards Ghost Ranch, with gorgeous views in all directions. Picture windows throughout the living area allow you to appreciate the vistas from the comfort of the well-appointed interior. The covered portales (covered porches) are ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the environment. Admire the view of the Pedernal from the portale off of the master suite, or take in the iconic landscape of Ghost Ranch while you grill on the portale off of the kitchen.
Spend your days hiking, visiting area galleries, or reconnecting with your own creative side. And after enjoying the unique sunset at the end of the day, savor the starlight of the unadulterated night sky.
'My first memory is of light--the brightness of light--light all around.' Georgia O'Keeffe

'Breathtaking,' 'Fabulous,' 'Stellar,' 'Magical' - Casa del Rio, a unique southwestern home awaits those who seek a glimpse into what the West was like – before it was “won.”
Casa del Rio offers timeless views of the Rio Chama, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch - with no other habitation to confound the imagination. The house rests on a mesa about 100 feet above the narrowest part of the Rio Chama, just before it empties into Abiquiu Lake. Guests of the Casa enjoy limited access to the private lakefront. Four circles of stones (tipi rings) found on the land are silent proof that these vistas have been enjoyed by people for hundreds of years.
Inside the 1500 square foot house, you will find all the luxuries and amenities of the 21st century. An open floor plan includes a great room, dining area, and kitchen; all under hand-hewn vigas harvested from the San Juan forest. Leather couches, swivel chair, Taos-made furniture - all make it a pleasure to take in the ever changing landscape in any direction. (Be sure to catch the dawn when the morning light descends upon the water). Hand painted retablo and santos, Navaho and Zapotec rugs, prints by RC Gorman, and Georgia O'Keefe all enhance the experience of being immersed in the southwest.
The kitchen features granite countertops, energy saving appliances, and an island with cooktop. A 42” LED satellite TV, WiFi, and soundbar provide connection to the modern world. (for those who must) Soft foam, queen size mattresses, resort quality bedding ensure your night’s rest – so you can be prepared for your next day’s adventure...
Located in the heart of the Piedra Lumbre (Valley of the Shining Stones) Casa del Rio was designed for outdoor living. Covered portales on the east, north, and west sides provide shade from the ever bright New Mexico sun. The concave shape of the house provides shelter from wind and wraps around an additional 800 square feet of a Colorado red flagstone courtyard. On the courtyard, or under the portal, you will find; a three-burner gas grill, two lounge chairs, a love seat, and table and dining chairs for four.
To complete your Abiquiu experience there is an outdoor hot tub positioned for panoramic river and mountain views. For those who prefer, there is also a two-person, heart-shaped bath. Full moon nights are so bright you can see colors on the walls of the river canyon. On moonless nights the stars seem so close you could almost reach up and touch them...
Regarding thecoronavirus, I would like my guests to know that I take the pandemic very seriously. In addition to already high standards for cleanliness, all surface areas and commonly touched objects like keys, doorknobs, TV remote, etc. are cleaned and disinfected between visits.
The waters of Abiquiu provide an important resting place for migratory birds; a virtual oasis in a land of desert and mountains. Eagles, osprey, geese, and many other species take time to have their needs met on their way to other destinations. Perhaps this description may one day apply to you!
- "Amazing house and beautiful views. We loved our stay." - "This was hands down the best VRBO we’ve ever stayed at. The view was incredible, home was clean and comfortable, location was quiet and peaceful, exactly what we needed! Add in the hot tub and it was perfection! Gordon has a magical property and we are so thankful he’s willing to share the experience with others!" - "3rd time staying there Will be back again Lots of great hiking in the area Fantastic sky full of stars Morning soak in the hot tub Loved it all"

Evidenced by the photography, narratives and passion of companion properties listed on this site- and seared into the American imagination by the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe- the Piedra Lumbre basin captivates; a thin place. From the edge of a mesa, Casita á Medida surveys it all: red cliffs forming Abiquiu Lake to the East, Ghost Ranch expanding to the North, Chama River Valley to the West and El Pedernal dominating the horizon to the South. Filling between are the ranges of Sangre de Cristo and the Jemez, Santa Fe National Forest and Kit Carson National Forest. And dark sky nights.
To experience this area takes time, a lifetime pursuit of many. Days of hiking, fishing, boating, rafting, discovering petroglyphs, searching for fossils/ historic remnants; trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Navajo Lake, Heron Lake, Chama, Pagosa Springs, Silverton and Durango, CO. Casita á Medida is designed with the long stay in mind. Built in the spirit of Northern New Mexico with deep deference to the surrounding landscape, Casita á Medida is a compound style retreat with one building housing dual master suites and another the great room, forming a protected patio third living space. The vast windows frame the art listed above (follow the changing forms of El Pedernal while preparing dinner; overlook the serenity of Ghost Ranch as you relax in the soaking tub). Inside melts to out. Designed to be completely off-grid, the site also features sustainable design such as passive solar mass, solar heat-boost for the domestic hot water and radiant floor heat, as well as gray watering, rain catchment and Holzer spirited permaculture supporting landscaping designed to further the circle.
With dual master suites (featuring a King and Queen or Queen and two twins) and a separated great room/kitchen structure, Casita á Medida can be modified to meet the needs for your stay. Allow yourself the time to be able to appreciate the experience. Allow yourself permission that the enjoyment - and biggest achievement- was that the day was.

Enjoy immersing yourself in your surroundings, taking in the night skies and fresh air, hiking from your door, visiting the lake and surrounding areas, and recharging your spirit.
La Luna is located in a private secondary building about 200 feet away from a house. It is fully equipped with:
private sliding glass door entrance,
luxurious linens,
air conditioning and heat,
a wonderful queen bed,
private bathroom,
over-sized shower,
mini fridge,
microwave,
toaster oven,
Keurig Coffee Maker and drip coffee maker,
And spectacular views from every angle!
The studio is small and comfortable, about 150 square feet.
Located about 20 feet north of neighboring El Sol Studio, The Studios are a perfect pairing for travelling friends. The studios enjoy shared outside common areas including a flagstone patio, a charcoal BBQ grill, picnic table, outdoor seating, and free parking. All areas have views galore!
The Studios are perfect additional rooms for nearby vacation home rentals. They are also great lodging options for solo travelers, couples, outdoor artists or those taking workshops at Ghost Ranch. If you don't need a lot of space or a kitchen, The Studios may be a great option for you. There are two studios in the building so you may have a neighbor or friend on the other side of the building.
As small economy guest rooms, the The Studios do not have WiFi or televisions (although your cell phone should work fine at the location and you can use your cell as a hot spot). This is a great place to unplug and rejuvenate!
Bring all your food and drink provisions with you. Bring prepared foods or plan to prepare simple meals in the microwave, toaster oven or outside on the charcoal BBQ. While two plates and cups are provided, you will want to bring any dishes that you want to cook with. Bring your own charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill.
The studios are located outside the village of Abiquiu in a gated community on Abiquiu Lake. It is about a 25 minute drive to Abiquiu. There is a wonderful history in this area - from dinosaurs, to Native American pueblos, to Spanish explorers, to cattle rustlers, to ghosts and witches, to Georgia O'Keeffe - all the way to our current age where the past history and culture blends with the multi-cultral artist colony that Abiquiu has become.
The room is conveniently located near Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Plaza Blanca, Pedernal, and the Carson National Forest. You will also want to explore the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, Bandelier National Monument, the nearby Cumbres Toltec Train, rafting the Chama River, the Ra Paulette Cave Tour, and Ojo Caliente.
You will need a car. During winter months, we recommend a 4WD or AWD as many of the roads in New Mexico are dirt/gravel. The roads back to the studios are dirt/gravel.
You may want to consider purchasing trip insurance in case your travel plans change or if you have concerns about traveling. Although we understand situations arise making cancellations unavoidable, we do not take responsibility for changes to your reservation due to delayed arrivals, early departures, inclement weather, unforeseen changes to travel plans, medical or family emergencies, work conflicts, missed or cancelled flights, pandemics, force majeure, etc. Travel insurance is used to protect your trip in the event of cancellation, or you can self-insure by taking on the risk yourself. Please note that as a small business owner, we cannot act as your travel insurance.
We provide directions and a code for the door so you can arrive anytime after the scheduled check-in time for easy self-checking, without needing to coordinate with us.
After booking, a Renter's Agreement will be emailed to you detailing rules of the property.
- "I had trouble locating the unit. A bit remote; had to travel a few miles on a gravel road. GPS info in listing is not accurate - GPS does not work well at the location. When I arrived, 1/2 of unit had no power. Called Tania, she came immediately and flipped the breaker switch back on. However, after my arrival, ABSOLUTELY no problems. Enjoyed the views, the peace and quiet, rainbows after showers on far side of lake. Pet friendly. I would recommend this unit to anyone who may be traveling in the area."

- "Absolutely amazing!" - "This is our second stay in the area and this one was special. It's remote, isolated, and quiet. The setting is unique, the house is well maintained, and it's full of special little touches. Who knew I liked lemon cookies? The daily hikes on the property are great. The views and the quiet are magic. And we caught the spring blooms as a bonus." - "I almost want to leave a terrible review to keep this gem to myself😁 We arrived late at night we were welcomed with a warm and cozy home in the cold February weather. We couldn’t believe to the views we saw in the morning when the sun was streaming in our bedroom! We made gourmet meals every night and cozied up to the fire watching the winter storm blow through. Star gazing was amazing✨ Everything in the house was well organized with all the essentials to make the stay convenient. The place is far from a grocery store so plan on doing that before you arrive however Courtney and Shaun provided with essentials (coffee☕️) for the morning and a very pleasant stay. ❤️🌵"

Magical. Enchanting. Serene. Through the years, locals have heard the many words tourists have found to describe the Chama Valley. Nestled between the Rocky Mountains, across the street from the historic Cumbres & Toltec Railroad, sitting right downtown, and within walking distance from the Valley’s oldest standing commercial building, Foster’s, which has been around since 1881, sits a two-bedroom apartment rich with its own history, awaiting your arrival. Whether you’re wanting to ride the train, immerse yourself in nature, or enjoy a cup of coffee in a small, local cafe, you really can have it all when you stay on the Other Side of the Tracks. Our recently remodeled apartment features views of the train, plenty of parking space, and free Wi-Fi. Conveniently located in the heart of town, the opportunities for your getaway are endless. Mountains, rivers, wildlife, and more surround us here! We are so grateful you have decided to visit Chama, and we can’t wait to hear the words you find to describe your stay with us.

We were surprised to discover we had the WHOLE inn to ourselves! PLENTY of room; we could easily have had several more people with us. It was roomy, rustic, and very comfortable; more than we were looking for and we suspect we'll be back next season. Would recommend in a heartbeat."

This delightful retreat combines the quaint appeal of a traditional caboose with contemporary comfort. - "Fantastic in all ways...highly recommend." - "Our week-long stay was made 10x more memorable because we stayed at The Grand Hacienda. Each morning started with a hearty and healthy breakfast served with care by the hosts Carolyn and Tom. They made a space for guests to get to know each other as well as rest and relax in beautiful solitude. The property is set in a very private location with views overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the Pedernal - you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. The accommodations were top notch and very comfortable - they took great care in designing and building the hacienda! We look forward to coming back again to explore more of New Mexico!"

- "Our few days at The Grand Hacienda, high on a mesa overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding stunning geography, were like a time apart; a place where time slows down and one is relieved, for a bit, of the noise of the world. This unique place is the product of two remarkable individuals who took the time and did the research to create a sophisticated yet down to earth, aesthetic and restorative experience. As artists (painter and architect), we deeply appreciate the "green" construction, the design and strategic siting of the building and each of its three suites, the thoughtful cuisine - creative, healthful and delicious! - the overall tone of the place, its tasteful landscaping and appointments. There simply isn't anything intrusive or abrasive in the entire experience. On the contrary, everything is designed to offer a time and space that is both stimulating and profoundly restful. Carolyn and Tom have created a jewel."

Great location as a base camp for hunting, fishing, four wheel trail trips or just quiet getaways
- "The cabin is a perfect place to get away and close to the town of chama. " - "Overall very nice. Only negatives were somewhat uncomfortable beds and a rotted step to back door. But we enjoyed it very much!"
