Check or Cash only, paid when you decide if you will sleep in The Moose Room. See photos. Any number over five people who stay at the Barnhaus is $30/night extra per person. Pay with cash or check when you arrive.
(COVID: Vaccinations recommended.)

We are so fortunate to live up here, and we do love to share.
Love animals?
Connect with alpacas and our Anatolian Shepherd!
The owners, Mickey and Evelyn, are your neighbors and will gladly show you around and make sure your stay at The Alpaca Barnhaus meets your needs.
The Santa Fe National Forest is just steps away. (Check out Facebook Aspen Ridge Alpacas for more photos.)
NEW: The Alpaca Barnhaus and the alpaca barn are available for small weddings. Walk down the aisle through the pasture with an alpaca. Come up and look at our venue and see if this is the place for an unforgettable and unusual wedding.

Being in nature is magical, a retreat from the workplace. (Wi-Fi is available.)The Barnhaus has cell phone service. And a landline phone is available. Enjoy an isolation vacation to recharge your own batteries. Enter a world of nature.

Relax in the mountains in a perfect getaway/base camp--winter, spring, summer, or fall.
Centrally located in the Jemez/Valles Caldera area. The Barnhaus is ideal for small retreats for writers or artists. Plan your next adventure or romantic getaway at the Alpaca Barnhaus. You will be back!

The Alpaca Barnhaus is located on one acre in the Santa Fe National Forest just 3.5 miles off the National Scenic Byway known as “The Jemez Trail” (NM Hwy 4). This two-bedroom home is surrounded by aspen and conifers. Perched at the top of a mountain, the quiet serenity of the surroundings makes it a perfect getaway for couples or individuals looking for a retreat in nature.

Walk across a large meadow to the pond. Continue up the ridge to a gorgeous overlook of San Antonio Canyon where the San Antonio River offers great fishing (but you have to drive around because the steep cliffs don’t invite even the most adventurous!)

You may choose to hike to the river through Mushroom Basin. The hike takes about an hour one way. A picnic lunch may be in order. During the winter months, snow is on your nature menu. Close by is an excellent hill for sledding, and cross-country skiing is ideal. Near Los Alamos are down-hill ski runs.

The house has two bedrooms upstairs in the loft (queen-sized bed in one bedroom and full-sized bed in the other bedroom) and a half-bath upstairs in the loft. A single bed is downstairs. On the first level is a full bath with a shower. The cabin has a forced-air furnace, ceiling fans and wood stove. At this altitude air conditioning is unnecessary since the temperature in the summer rarely gets above 80.

The Alpaca Barnhaus is furnished in a way that makes you feel like it's your home, too. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware. If you’ve forgotten to bring something, Amanda’s Country Store is just down the hill in La Cueva. For your convenience there's a washer/dryer with eco-friendly washing products. A picnic table is on the side deck. If the night is clear, take the comfortable air mattress outside and enjoy stargazing from the deck. We do not charge a cleaning fee as long as you leave the house as you found it. $120 if you do not care to clean the house. 90% of our guests clean the house. There are no additional fees.

OH, ALPACAS! The owners have an alpaca ranch near the Alpaca Barnhaus. Mickey and Evelyn will be happy to introduce you to these friendly fur-bearing animals. They are quiet, odor-free, gentle on the environment, and produce exquisite fiber that is made into yarn and other alpaca products. As you stand in the barn area, the alpacas will run down the hill, enter the barn, and weigh themselves! Indeed, you will get up close and personal with the alpacas as you learn about them and get a chance to feed them with their special pellet supplements. Alpacas are known to be the most intelligent of all livestock. Our guarantee: You and the alpacas will smile.

About 20 minutes south in historic Jemez Springs are restaurants, a saloon, a historic hot-springs bathhouse with massages, and an outdoor hot-springs pool. Jemez Springs is home to several outstanding artists, too. Farther south on Hwy 4 is the Jemez Pueblo Walatowa Center with its fine museum and native-American crafts.

In the other direction toward Los Alamos you will enter the awe-inspiring Valles Caldera National Preserve. Tours can be arranged online or in Jemez Springs. Off the road in the Valles Caldera you will wonder at the Valle Grande where you can usually spot elk herds.

Continue driving to Bandelier National Monument with its ancient cliff dwellings. This is another good place to have a picnic. Afterwards loop back up to Los Alamos and visit the two outstanding museums. The museum run by the historical society takes you back to the formation of the plateaus and the foundation and operation of the Los Alamos Ranch School. For the making of the atomic bomb, the Ranch School gave way to Los Alamos Scientific Lab. The second museum, The Bradbury Museum, takes you through the war years to the present.

Drive twenty-five minutes from Aspen Ridge Alpacas and experience the amazing Valles Caldera. The Valles Caldera National Preserve (now a national park) was a private ranch until 2000, when Congress created it from a well-known ranch known as “the Baca Ranch” in New Mexico’s volcanic Jemez Mountain Range. This 89,000 acre property is situated inside a collapsed crater. Studded with eruptive domes and featuring Redondo Peak (11,254 feet), this old ranch property is now being developed to explore a new way of managing public lands. The preserve is open to the public, but we guarantee you’ll find the visit unlike any other you’ve had in a park or national forest.

Guest Reviews:

- "Our family has been coming to the Alpaca Barnhaus for four years in a row. Mickey and Evelyn are wonderful hosts, and the kids love hanging out with the alpacas. The house is cozy but fully stocked for cooking, lounging, and enjoying the surrounding woods. We enjoy using the place as a convenient base camp for adventures throughout the Jemez Mountains. We plan to keep coming back!" - "My husband and I had a much-needed break from work for four wonderful days at the Alpaca Barnhaus. We LOVED being around the alpacas, Tinker and Bell (the Anatolian shepherds). Mickey and Evelyn were wonderful hosts. The setting is sublime and so different from our surroundings in suburban St. Louis. We were less than an hour's drive to many activities and more breath-taking scenery. The cabin was spacious enough but still had a cozy feel. We would love to return -- this week would be nice!! :)"

Soaking, Relaxing, Hiking, Fishing, Hunting, and Loving Everyday!
Cabin
Jemez Springs, New Mexico, USA

Imagine yourself sitting on the porch, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, all the while enjoying a good cup of coffee in the morning, or a fantastic glass of wine in the evening!

Enjoy the grill and the quaint atmosphere after a nice day of soaking at the mineral springs or hiking the many trails. Fenton Lake is a short, fifteen minute drive for great fishing! We are so pleased to share our home away from home with you, and know you will enjoy it as much as we do!

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is a beautiful 15 minute drive. The Caldera is an outdoor person’s dream. Use this link to research some of the many activities.

The Caldera and Springs Retreat is approximately 1000 sqft and sleeps up to 5 total, 2 in the Master Bedroom with a Queen-size bed, 3 in the guest room bunk beds with a double on the bottom and single on the top.

Features include satellite and two HDTVs. The following are also provided: DVD player, dart board, full kitchen, microwave, and refrigerator. All basic cooking utensils and dishes are provided in the kitchen.

Bedding and linens are provided. *Keep in mind we have a smaller dryer so our towels we provide are not going to be thick due to our dryer capabilities. A small washer and dryer is also available for your convenience.

Jemez Springs is a mountain community in Northern New Mexico, offering 320 days of sunshine a year, beautiful scenery including mountains, lakes and waterfalls, mineral hot springs, lots of outdoor recreation, winter sports and much more. Stream fishing, lake fishing, and trophy hunting is available. There is much to do to keep busy but it is often hard to leave the comfort of the cozy cabin.

*Cellphone service is very limited (Verizon works the best) and may not work in the area. The internet we provide is very slow and is available to check emails or social media but we ask not to be used for any downloading or streaming.

*Please be aware that there is no local trash service available so you WILL need to pack in and pack out meaning take all trash with you.

*Lastly, we understand you are renting our cabin to enjoy yourself and be comfortable but please do not rent our property if you want a full service rental. We live 1.5 hours away and can not deliver items you were expecting to be in the cabin (i.e. bigger drinking cups, specific cooking items). We also hope you understand it is a CABIN - not a luxury hotel in where you will not encounter things like mother nature or simply being in a remote mountainous area and all the things that go with it (i.e. if it rains or snows heavy, electricity can go out, mice or insects may enter if you leave the door/windows open). We do not want to sound harsh but we also get frustrated when we get reviews later that the cabin didn't have fluffy towels or they had no satellite service if they were caught in a storm). It's our family vacation home that we open to others who want to enjoy the area and are not property managers. We just want for our potential guests to enjoy themselves but also know what to expect upfront.

*We do require a minimum of three nights for any holiday weekend.

Guest Reviews:

- "This property is beautiful! We had an amazing time. It is better than described! We will definitely stay again." - "The site needs to be updated about all the new stuff that is happening with this home. It now has an upper deck off the game/lounge area near the master bed room. The deck gives more wanted afternoon shade on the lower deck and in the the evening the upper deck is a great star gazing location. Some of the trees near the wonderful fire pit have been removed so you can see and hear the Jemez better. I love the two person swing chair as well as the hammock both of which are shaded under the cottonwoods. I did relocate one of the fire pit's Adirondack chair so that it was right next to the Jemez where I could relax with my book next to all the babbling and burbling. The kitchen is well laid out and has everything you need to prep and cook your meal ingredients with ease. The barbeque on the lower deck was great. If being surrounded by nature is not quite your thing then the internet access and big tv will probably work for you. The master bedroom bath area has a walk-in shower so nice plus there. I love that the low storage room behind the master bed is designated "the Bear Cave" for any adventurous kids(or adults). I spent both nights with the fire pit operating. It would be a great place to tell ghost stories while eating smores and looking into the dark woods on the other side of the Jemez. I wish to thank the host personally for letting us stay latter on Sunday because there were no Sunday afternoon guests. Getting to sleep in and enjoy the yard a little bit more was an incredible gift."

- "Turkey Lodge is a beautiful home. So peaceful and beautiful, high in the mountains (8,700 feet more or less). Wild life and birds were fun to watch. My husband and I and my daughter's family of four had so much fun. And even though we worried it wouldn't work for the six of us, it was enough space with all the decks and outdoor living areas. Kaycee, the manager, was very responsive." - "So quite and peaceful" - "The house was super clean and had everything for a wonderful weekend away. They have a ton of movies and games for kids all ages. This has to be one of the best locations we have stayed at using VRBO."

- "Well equipped cabin in the woods. Close to Fenton lake and hikes. Beautiful scenery and helpful host." - "This house was a nice place to stay during the busy weekend of the balloon festival. The house owner is also very responsive and accomodating." - "The cabin was lovely and so private and quiet. We all enjoyed sitting on the deck and also sitting down by the river taking in the scenery. We were amazed by the giant ponderosa trees. We live in the mountains in Colorado but had never seen trees as tall and big as these. Deer wandered by each day grazing in the yard. We used electric baseboard heat in the bedrooms at night and warmed the house with the fireplace during the day. Nearby Fenton Lake was the perfect place to watch the eclipse. The kitchen was well supplied and even had a Keurig and another coffee pot to use. I would like to see more of this information listed in the amenities. We were able to cross the small stream and get to the cabin, but we drove a Subaru and a CRV. It would be good to mention this in your description to access the cabin. Thanks so much!"

Guest Reviews:

- "Relaxing time with lovely views. " - "This cabin was amazing. It was a fantastic place to stay while adventuring in the area. The owner's have thought of everything to make our stay comfortable. We enjoyed grilling each night and taking in the surrounding views. We would love to come back some day." - "The cabin is a treasure- immaculately clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and pretty plates, the bed in the master had a good mattress and the linens and towels were luxurious. The living room was cozy and the deck was the perfect spot to recharge from a day of hiking and watch the hummingbirds. Initially I was concerned when I read that a 4-wheel drive vehicle was required but we had no problem with our Honda CRV."
