- "We enjoyed our stay here. The house is comfortable and clean with all we needed. There is a nice enclosed yard and covered outside area for eating and relaxing with a TV. There is a wooded creek running behind the property. It is a short walk to several restaurants and the Old Town Main St. Amy communicated well with us before arrival and we met during our stay as she worked at the other house on the property. She suggested several nice areas for hiking / mountain biking and restaurant and nearby destination suggestions that we enjoyed. She also had info in the house on local attractions, restaurants, etc. We would definitely come back and would like to stay longer and see more of Amy's suggested destinations.."

Guest Reviews:

- "We have stayed here a number of times and always appreciate the wonderful setting and extremely well-cared property. Very clean and quiet!" - "Bright and peaceful place with beautiful views and comfortable furnishings" - "Wonderful" - "Great place to kick back and unwind. It's up on a small hill so you will experience peace and quiet and feel close to nature. Beautiful view from the balcony especially at night. What stood out to me in particular was how clean the place was. The only drawback was that we went in the beginning of July, and it was unseasonably hot, and the portable AC had a hard time cooling down the place. Other than that, I highly recommend staying here...you will love it."

You have access to it all!

The entire house was built by hand and it took nearly 7 years to complete. Everything is custom and I can promise you that you will never stay in a place like this!

A great location to retreat to and escape from the everyday! We want you to share this jewel with your family, friends, biking crew, birding group, hiking tribe, fishing buds, and your hunting pals to enjoy Sapillo Creek Escape!

We will entertain pets so long as they get along with other pets and have their recent vaccinations. If you are bringing a cat/cats or a dog/dogs, we have had issues with pets soiling the carpet and scratching up the doors. Please crate or keep pets in their carriers when you are not in the house or take your pets with you. We avail the use of a dog crate in the common area for dog(s) and for cats, please bring your own cat carrier. Also, please keep them off of the furniture to make it easier to clean and to be mindful of future guests who may be allergic. Finally, please pick up after them and throw the poop bags into a larger trash bag since we have to take the trash out to the dump and keeping track of all the individual poop bags is disgusting and annoying.

Finally, you’re on 20 acres of our land, so camping is also welcome!

We are available via cell, text and email.

Only cell service out here is T-Mobile.

We will have internet access but there are no TVs in the home. We want you to disconnect while you are here and enjoy the environment around you!

Guest Reviews:

- "Agave House is a destination within itself. My wife and I rented it as a romantic getaway, and it did not disappoint. The agave were in full bloom during our stay, and all I can say is, "Wow!" I was not expecting to see 30 ft tall agave lit up in bright yellows and reds. The property had tons of them - a forest of agave. The house is really comfortable and nice, and is in a beautiful spot. Nestled into a cliff rock formation, there are views in every direction. Every side of the house has a porch, so as the sun moves there's always a place to sit and enjoy the outside. If you want privacy, then this is the place. Quiet. Peaceful. The house has eclectic art and everything we needed to be comfortable and relaxed. The property itself has hiking trails and they have a map to follow along with cairns marking the trail. Hard to follow and overgrown - we had to backtrack numerous times because it was overgrown and rugged - but with a little exploring, we hiked most of the trails successfuly. Mountainous, rocky, forested and filled with agave. Killer views and rock formations. Cool hiking without ever leaving the property. We did explore Silver City which is 20 min down the hill. A lot hotter down there. We enjoyed a sunset/moonlight horseback riding with Wolfhorse Outfitters, and explored all the thrift stores and art galleries. Not a lot going on in town and it's a bit economically depressed, but Agave House is worth going to all by itself. Did I mention the Agave were "Wow!!!""

Tranquil escape nestled in the forest on a beautiful horse ranch.
Cabin
Lake Roberts, New Mexico, USA

Tranquil cabin at Salt Creek Ranch in the Gila National Forest. This modern cabin includes a comfy King size bed with a
Dormeo topper, full kitchen, and a covered porch with views of horse pastures, hummingbirds, and beautiful mature trees that grow along Sapillo Creek (runs through the property).

Located just off the Trail of the Mountain Spirits... about 2 miles from Lake Roberts, 15 miles from Gila Hot Springs, & 18 miles from Gila Cliff dwellings.

We give our guests full privacy, but are available if needed via messaging . Please let us know if there is anything you need or if something on the property needs our attention.

This cabin is located on our ranch. It is about 1/4 mile off the highway and sits in a lovely valley. You can occasionally hear a car on the highway, or a distant neighbor target shooting, It is a remote area. The ranch owns from one ridge to the other in the valley that the cabin sits. Your only "neighbors" are us (the hosts), the horses that are in the pasture that the cabin overlooks, and some wildlife out the back door in the forest.

Close to Lake Roberts, endless hiking, ATV trails, horse trails, and offroading

There is a creek crossing across the driveway that you will need to drive through.

The ranch backs up to over a million acres of National Forest to hike or ride for hours. You can literally hike out your back door, up the hill that is owned by the ranch, and into the national forest with no fences between you and the vast Gila National Forest.

If you would like to meet the horses in person, please let Lauren know. For liability reasons, we need to accompany you to meet the horses. Thank you for understanding!

For horse riders who are interested in bringing horses, please contact the host for stall/paddock options. We have an 8-stall barn and keep 2-4 stalls available for guest horses.

This lovely modern cabin will give you easy access to hiking in the Gila National Forest and Wilderness; fishing at Lake Roberts; soaking at the Gila Hot Springs; or exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

The cabin has an open floor plan, with the only interior walls being around the bathroom, creating lots of natural light and a pleasant uplifting place to "breathe". The kitchen is full-sized with all amenities to cook, bake, and eat. The kitchen shares space with the dining table that easily serves/seats four people. The kitchen counter extends down the wall for a sitting space with tall stools that looks out the window over the horse pasture... a great place to sip on a cup of java in the morning during cooler weather when you'd rather be inside than out on the patio.

The King-size bed has a Dormeo topper, as well as two Dormeo pillows. Dormeo pillows have a soft side and a firm side, so flip them over to see which side you like best! Additional pillows are also stored in the cabin closet.

The futon sleeper sofa easily folds out to provide a sleeping space for one additional person (though not a very large person). There is additional bedding and pillows in the closet.

The outdoor spaces... the front covered patio has beautiful views of the horse pastures and is equipped with a small table with chairs or two outdoor recliners to take in the views or watch the hummingbirds come and go from the feeders. The back yard is a natural gateway into the forest. If you spend a morning or evening sitting in the chairs in this space... it's like watching a Disney movie at times with all the forest animals coming and going from the feeders... all kinds of birds, chipmunks, and squirrels. There is a small pair of binoculars in the cabin with a couple of bird books for this region.

The nearest large airports are El Paso TX (3-hour drive) and Tucson AZ (4-hour drive). However, there is a small airline (AdvancedAirlines.com) that flies into Grant County Airport in Silver City from Phoenix, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles at a very reasonable rate. Rental Cars are available at the Grant County Airport through Silver Car Rental at 575-574-2350 (must reserve in advance).

Grant County Airport is about 1 hour from the ranch.

The ranch is located on "The Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway". If coming from Silver City, you'll take Highway 15 to Highway 35. When you get to the first "dip", the "Salt Creek Ranch" sign will be on you left. Come on down the driveway.
If coming from Mimbres, you'll come in on Highway 35, pass the Lake Roberts General Store by 2.3 miles and you'll see the "Salt Creek Ranch" sign on the left..

Please take note that this is a fairly remote location. You must drive through a creek crossing to get to the cabin, so we recommend a 4WD or vehicle with a little more clearance than standard. Most of the time this crossing is very shallow, but it can be volatile during the monsoon season. You will need to bring food, as the nearest grocery store is almost an hour drive (Silver City). The closest restaurant is about 25 minutes away (The Log Cabin).

Cell service: Much of the drive up to the cabin there will not be cell service.

Guest Reviews:

- "What a wonderful vacation in the Gila Forest! Cabin was very clean and spacious. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed. Patios were just perfect for relaxing and watching the wildlife. The ranch is in a great location for exploring the area and has wonderful forest access right out the back door. This is a great place to get away from city and enjoy some quiet time in the forest. Lauren and Tim were excellent hosts and we look forward to returning again!"

Middle of town lodge style cottage
House
Silver City, New Mexico, USA

The Swan St Cottage is a quaint but cozy lodge style place located exactly in the middle of Silver City. It was our first home for our family of 6 for 10+ years and as our girls continue to grow it is updated and cared for by all of us. It took a while before we noticed one of our daughters was leaving her signature (J) on her work. It can be spotted sporadically throughout the property.

What we love…If you are looking to be in the Gila wilderness you can take a drive in various directions and be there in about 30 minutes. We have a fenced in backyard where behaved dogs are welcome with a fee. We are less than a mile from the track, schools and hospital. Even though traffic can be a little busy on weekdays around 8am and around 3pm you can’t hear it in the house or even in the backyard. We have had the same great neighbors for the last 15 years who watch out for each other. We support Local Artists who display and sell their art in the home. We have keyless entry. Yes we have WiFi. We have smart TV’s that guests can log into any streaming network they subscribe to. There is a full size washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen. Even towels designated for your out door adventures to the rivers and and lakes. We have a planet marking on the sidewalk by our front yard from the planet walk that many who pass by stop to read the plaque.

What we don’t like… I want to be upfront & clear...the neighborhood doesn’t look glamorous. Houses are close together and Swan Street is one of the busiest streets in town because we are close to the hospital, schools, and track. It is about 1 mile from downtown, however walking along and crossing highway 180 can be stressful. Especially with little ones and pets. There are some places the sidewalk disappears along the way.

If you are looking to be exactly in the center of silver city on a map, then this is the place to be. If you are looking to be in downtown, or in a remote location in the Gila National Forest, we recommend searching for a place closer to your preference.

Guest Reviews:

- "Our stay was outstanding! The host had thought of just about everything we could’ve needed. The house was very clean and comfortable and welcoming. It made our overall stay very nice. The only thing we needed but wasn’t on site was cooking spray…but we managed 😉😁👍. PERFECT location if your stay involves anything at/on the WNMU campus." - "The house was amazing, so clean and so efficiently put together. I only had one real problem; I would suggest some form of traction in the tub and a grab bar on the outside of the tub. Also maybe a hand held shower head. Other than that, the house was great; centrally located and near the shops. Would gladly stay there again."

Quiet mountains between Silver City & Pinos Altos. Kitchen/living room/bedroom
House
Silver City, New Mexico, USA

Ideal for guests that hike and explore by day & enjoy quiet mountain nights.
Hikers, bikers and birders in particular love our property.
The Casita is one mile down a dirt road between Silver City & Pinos Altos, and is nestled one mile from Gila Nat'l Forest.
The casita kitchen allows you to prepare your own meals. The location allows you to enjoy Downtown Silver City restaurants & galleries 15 minutes away, or the iconic Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House just up the road in Pinos Altos.
We're on-site, life long locals, and welcome those who enjoy the rugged beauty of SW New Mexico.

The space
Our 650 square foot casita has been a labor of love that we've been honored to share with friends and family, and are pleased to now share on VRBO. 1-3 adults can fit comfortably, with a living/dining area, kitchen with all the amenities, 1 full bathroom, 1 bedroom w/ queen size bed+ a twin size bed in the nook off of the kitchen. There is a mini-split ac/heat unit in the both the living room and bedroom. Please see pictures for more details.
We love living in forest terrain, but just 10 minutes from the intersection of Hwy 15 and 32nd Street Bypass. The nearest public access to the Gila National Forest is one mile away. Our daytime skies are some of the bluest, and our nightime skies are some of the darkest.
The casita has its own dedicated WiFi for your personal devices, as well as the smart TV in bedroom (no cable, satellite, or antenna).
The kitchen includes a fridge/freezer, two gas burners, microwave, air fryer, coffee maker + all the amenities you'll need to prepare simple meals.
The bedroom is accessed through the bathroom. There is a solid, heavy door separating the living area and bathroom, and a light-weight, accordian style door separating the bathroom and bedroom. This lighter door affords visual privacy but is not soundproof. Please review the pictures and consider your comfort levels with this set-up as you plan.
Our water comes from our well. We are thankful for the good water pressure our well provides, and request that our guests are sustainably minded in regards to shower lengths and running water.
The family German Shepherd joins us on the property as we tend the chickens and go on walks, and may run up to introduce itself to you if given the opportunity.
Out of consideation for those with pet allergies, we do not allow pets in the casita.
Guest access
You will have full access to the casita and parking outside.

Guest Reviews:

- "I stayed at the Round Mountain retreat for seven weeks while I got to know Silver City and the surrounding area, and by the end of the visit I had decided to move here! The property is adjacent to public lands that you can hike on for anything from a half-mile loop to the top of a hill to see the sunset to a multi-loop hike up into the Gila National Forest that could take a full day. Being able to sit on the deck and watch the sunset in the middle of winter was a real treat. Indoors is cozy with a wood stove and soaking tub that made the winter days more pleasant. Scott and Denise were kind enough to let me stay with my cats, and I brought blankets to put over the lovely leather couches to make sure the kitties didn't damage them. I'd highly recommend their place for folks looking to enjoy a long stay in a lovely setting and a fun little town."

Lake Roberts Cabin in the Pines
Cabin
Lake Roberts, New Mexico, USA

Nestled in the heart of the Gila, this cozy cabin offers a tranquil getaway for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Step onto the peaceful patio amidst towering ponderosa pines, where you'll find a gas BBQ grill and comfy patio furniture, ideal for outdoor dining & unwinding under the stars.

Endless opportunities for exploration. Spirit Canyon Pictograph Trail and Lake Roberts are just a short walk away.

Unplug, recharge, and reconnect with nature at this rustic retreat—your adventure awaits!

We give our guests privacy, but are available if needed via messaging. Please let us know if there is anything on the property needs our attention.

The house is located about an hour north of Silver City in the quiet community of Lake Roberts Heights. It overlooks a small Lake Roberts neighborhood in the valley below. There are a few homes that are further up the gravel road that runs by the house, so a few cars per day may pass by the cabin (though some days there will be no cars going by!). It's a quiet area, so please keep the noise level down as those who live out here enjoy the peaceful environment surrounding them (and we hope this is what you are also seeking!). Definitely no parties allowed.

The Lake Roberts General Store are is about 2 miles away (on the other side of the lake) and is open seasonally (April-September). The 4Seaysons RV & Country Store is located about 13 miles east toward Mimbres and carries a pretty good supply of basics, homemade ice cream, delicious burritos, and fishing supplies/bait.

You can walk to Lake Roberts through the Upper End Campground that's about 1/4 mile. Spirit Canyon Pictograph trail is just a few hundred feet from your doorstep... as is the Gila National Forest.

Grant County Airport is about 50-60 minutes from the cabin.

Please take note that this is a fairly remote location. It is an hour from Silver City (32 miles); 19 mies to Gila Hot Springs; 24 miles from Gila Cliff Dwellings; and walking distance to Gila National Forest and Lake Roberts. The nearest gas station and grocery store is in Silver City, so be sure to bring food and fuel up on the way up!

Also please note that the road up to the cabin is a steep climb for a several hundred feet on fairly loose gravel. We recommend a 4WD. During winter conditions or periods of heavy rain, the road will definitely require a 4WD.

Guest Reviews:

- "Property was so clean and comfortable. Beds were amazingly soft. Definately returning in the future...." - "This is a great property. We had a sisters hiking trip to the Gila Cliff Dwelling area and it was a great location for us. The view from the deck is breath taking and the deer, quail, chipmunks, and hummingbird feeder just add another layer of beauty. It is a very peaceful place. The kitchen is well stocked and there’s a nice grill on the deck. There are nice bathroom and bedroom linens. It is obvious that the owners put thought into supplying the property. As advertised - the property has 1 bathroom - so for 4 women that was a bit of a challenge but it worked out.Our observations: the road in to the property and the driveway are a bit steep but the driveway is a circle drive and can be navigated - carefully. The bed in the smaller bedroom is very hard - I know some people like that but it was not comfortable for us.We had a lovely time and enjoyed the stay."

Air Conditioned Adobe Home, livable summers at 6000', very private
House
Silver City, New Mexico, USA

Casa Cobre

Thanksgiving 1 week minimum. Normally a 14 day minimum and rates may not be displayed properly on the calendar unless you specify your dates first. Also, ask about long term rates (60+ days). A truly green adobe house built before green was en vogue. This fully furnished home at 6000' altitude provides magnificent views through 4 gentle seasons. The location is just beyond the south edge of the city limits providing convenient access to all the amenities of the town and the isolation of quiet, country living. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the natural lighting in this passive solar home creates a bright living space with full southern views.

This 2 bedroom, 2 bath home was remodeled from a home to a fully furnished rental with a unique and vibrant copper (cobre in Spanish) warmth. The master bedroom has a king bed, two comfy chairs and a small desk. It has a huge master closet and an open, connected bathroom. The second extra large bedroom has two queen beds, two comfy chairs, a dresser, and a small desk. The second bathroom is separate from, but adjacent to, the second bedroom. The living room has a very large and comfortable corner sectional, four comfy chairs and a large fireplace. In its basic configuration, the dining room seats 4, although 10 or more folks have used the space with the expandable table. Additionally, the dining area features a bar counter with stools that face the kitchen. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The entire private home setting includes three outdoor seating areas with views of distant mountain peaks in or near Mexico. Dark skies provide great star viewing.

We have developed a trail system on the family property for enjoyable walks or hikes.

We would be glad to discuss our rates and answer any other questions prior to booking.

We also have another family property #428295 with very similar features.

Guest Reviews:

- "This is a lovely home that is beautifully decorated and MORE than comfortable. The owners are equally lovely and we cannot wait to go back!" - "We were here for a celebration and this property suited our needs to a tee." - "We spent 5 nights in Casa Cobre over Memorial Day weekend. We were in town to see family and the 4 of us (including our adult kids) thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, spotless adobe home for several nights. The spatious accommodations were bright, comfortable and modern. The property has been completely renovated with nice touches everywhere and artistic attention to detail. The copper theme was fun to track throughout the rental - with copper art work and light switch plates, clever copper pipe railings and even cool copper plumbing in the utility room. This passive solar and environmentally conscientious home perfectly complemented the scenic vistas outside. The hosts live close by and were very responsive, but we really didn't want for anything. The views from the front patio were spectacular during the day and equally remarkable at night with great southern exposure and dark southern star gazing (Scorpio and the Milky Way are nice). We had great weather (warm, but not hot during the day and cool at night) and went on three separate day hikes in the surrounding Gila mountains, including the Cat Walk and the 1,000 year old Juniper Tree at Fort Bayard. There was also an outdoor Blues Festival in Silver City over the weekend with lots of activity in town. We also ate lunch at a local Mexican Restaurant - delicious! We've stayed at lovely homes in Santa Fe, but this was New Mexico at its best! Can't wait to come back!"

NAN Ranch - On the Magical Mimbres River of New Mexico, a Historic Retreat
House
Faywood, New Mexico, USA

This listing is for the spacious 1912 Rancher's House with its 1950s High-Style Western interior, sunny patio, and fine amenities. The house accommodates 8-11 with 3 bedrooms, 2 sleeping porches, 2 baths, new gourmet kitchen, large porches, fountain patio, fireplace, and more. Renovated in 1950 by the owners' grandparents under direction of renowned ranch interior designer W. R. Dallas of San Antonio, the Rancher's House is much the same today, save for minor refurbishing and recent upgrades to the baths and gourmet kitchen. For guests, the house may be either a roomy, rambling accommodation for one family or a small group of friends, or the adjacent patio apartments may be added to provide comfortable accommodations for up to 10 more. (See these additional listings on this website: Hawk's Nest, Fountain Patio, and Rancher's House/Patio Combination.)

Guests find that the Rancher's House, with its sprawling spaces and oversized living areas, is exactly right for enjoying the opportunity to gather. The long front porch easily accommodates a group at one end playing cards at the small table, others in the middle space visiting, and a jigsaw puzzle or board game in progress at the large table beyond – and more. In the spacious living room, there are several conversation areas, or some guests might enjoy the big screen TV for broadcast cable programming or movies from our library. Off the kitchen, the side porch is perfect for breakfast at the banquette or for managing drinks service for the party. The dining room serves up to 12. With other tables and a bar up to 16 more may share a meal.

Outdoors, the fountain patio is a patch of fresh-air privacy for the Rancher's House, but the house is only steps away from the beautiful pool, a replica of its original 1929 predecessor, and well-groomed lawns and plantings within the courtyard's walled perimeter. Shady seating and a 6-person spa promise even more relaxation.

Beyond the courtyard, expansive lawns beckon guests to run and play or soak up sun. There's room for badminton, croquet, or bocce – or just enjoying the air and light, so special in New Mexico. Guests are welcome to explore ranch headquarters, with its barns and corrals, and then to hike, bicycle, or drive out in any direction on NAN Ranch roads. There is plenty to see and enjoy.

• Rental guests may also park one RV or camping trailer nearby, though we do not offer hookups.
• For very large groups, combinations of rentals, and events, a consultation with the ranch owners is recommended.

There are two lounge areas, a huge kitchen and flexible eating area, a private, separate bedroom with full-size bed, three bunk rooms, two group bathrooms and one single bath. Front and back lawns and a patio offer plenty of outdoor space.

The Rancher's House was built around 1912, a sprawling version of the western bungalow, and refurbished and furnished for the owners' grandparents by WR Dallas Studios in 1951. The custom-designed furnishings are classic high-style mid-20th century Western: knotty pine, iron, pistols and horseshoes. The kitchen was renovated in 2012-2013 with built-in Thermador appliances, bungalow-style lighting, and cabinets designed to match the original. The house has a giant living room, 2 service bars, 4 eating areas, washer and dryer, 3 bedrooms, a sleeping porch, 2 full baths. The house opens to a fountain patio that accesses two apartments.

The Apartments each have bedrooms, sitting rooms with additional sleeping space. The downstairs apartment has 2 full beds, while the upstairs apartment has queen beds. Bunkhouse Cabins are affordable and rustic, appealing to hikers, bicyclers, and others who love the outdoors. They're furnished with twin beds, baths and kitchens, and there's plenty of space for gear. Dogs are welcome for a modest fee.

The Gardener's Cottage is cozy and central to the headquarters. Its single bedroom has one full-size bed. The sitting room, which has a fold-out sofa, is open to the kitchen are opened via a large service window and bar. An antique claw-foot tub with shower adds atmosphere to the bathroom, which was remodeled in 2016. Well behaved canine guests are welcome in the Cottage.

Whether you want quiet and solitude, a leisurely visit with nature, or rigorous hiking, trail running, or bicycling, your time at the Y-Bar NAN Ranch will be fulfilling. We can confidently say that there is no comparable property, anywhere, that is so open to guests' personal visions for a fulfilling holiday from the outside world. Public parks and preserves are full of other adventurers, but the NAN is yours to share with only a handful of others, and there's so much space and variety you need never see another guest unless you wish to. Just as important to most of our guests is that this historical working ranch is neither resort nor "dude ranch": we don't "entertain" you, schedule you, or crowd you. You design your experience.

Though you're in one version of heaven just staying at the NAN Ranch, you're also close enough to make day trips to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, Gila National Forest, City of Rocks State Park, Silver City for fine dining and fine art shopping, La Esperanza Vineyard just up the road for wine and sunsets, and other interesting and sometimes quirky corners of our neighborhood.

Glamping Casita @ Sapillo Creek Escape
Bed & Breakfast
Grant County

Surrounded by the Mogollon Mountains, this glamping casita provides privacy and amenities: queen bed (medium softness) coffee maker, cooktop, mini fridge, crock pot, kitchen essentials, dresser, wardrobe, table and four chairs.

Outside, you are a walk away from Sapillo Creek & the Gila Forest and a short drive to Lake Roberts.

There is potable water right outside (clay pot covers the spout in the winter to prevent freezing), one privacy tent, an outhouse & a solar-powered camping shower.

The space
The Casita @ Sapillo Creek Escape is an adobe cabin styled as a studio guesthouse with a queen bed, and privacy. It sits adjacent to the home and is within 100 feet away from the front door of Sapillo Creek Escape and 100 feet away from Sapillo Creek Studio. There is an UPDATED outhouse and a solar-powered, portable shower and a privacy tent that can be propped up in the back of the casita for the guests to use for privacy when showering if you don’t want to use the area next to the outhouse. There is also potable well water that pumps right into the front of the casita that can be used as well.

Potential Guests - please make sure you read the full description of this property fully. We are in the wilderness and the house gets cleaned after every guest thoroughly. However, the wilderness is full of bugs, lizards, collared peccaries, pine needles and so much more wonderful nature. This property is for those who understand they are booking a place that might get dusty in between guests, might accumulate a spiderweb or two after even right after cleaning. This place is for guests who understand that sometimes the wild things die nearby and can affect the way the place smells even if there is nothing nearby or the weather - for example monsoon season might bring on the smell of some damp and the dry heat of the summers may bring on more dust.

This place is for guests who understand that because of my location in the wilderness, services are difficult to come by included trash services which is why people need to pack their trash out.

If you are expecting a property with full-fledged amenities, please move on after you see the word "glamping" - this is camping but with a bed and a microwave and an electric stove.

We have recently had several guests clearly not read the full description and their reviews really make us not want to be Airbnb hosts - we do this for the love of nature and the enjoyment of sharing our space with others who love nature and the wild.

The casita was built by hand and along with the house next to it, it took nearly 7 years to complete.

The bed sleeps two comfortably. If you bring cots, you can host two more people or kids at the casita. It will be tight, but it can work!

Some of the mesas of the Mogollon Mountains still boast pottery and artifacts that date back to the Mogollon Indian civilizations hundreds of years ago.

This is a leave no trace casita, so please take out all of the trash that you make on the property.

Pets are welcome - 1 or 2 dogs, vaccinated and socialized. No smoking. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Other things to note
Take a look at the double-sided casita instructions when you arrive. They should be in the casita. Please let us know if you cannot find it.

The bed is a queen-sized bed with medium levels of firmness. For folks who love firm beds, this is not a firm bed. It is also not the softest bed. It’s right in the middle.

Important Information about the Outhouse:

Scoop some sawdust or pine shavings and throw it into the outhouse hole when you’re done to keep the odors and bugs away and to enhance decomposition of biowaste.

We do not like messing with your biowaste so please keep the place clean. If it is full, get a stick and push it down. The weather will impact decomposition.

Our outhouse is UPDATED - I hope you enjoy it!

Casa Kokopelli - Adobe House Near The Gila
Cabin
Grant County

On the Mimbres River, near the Gila wilderness, this two bedroom newly-renovated adobe home sits on the mountainside overlooking the valley. Quiet and peaceful, this retreat is perfect for hiking, biking, and star-gazing. Minutes off Highway 35, a designated scenic byway, it is thirty minutes from Silver City and twenty minutes from Lake Roberts. Please note that after the Gila Fire in June 2022, the valley is susceptible to seasonal flash flooding.

The space
The house is on 11 acres. It has two bedrooms and one bathroom. One bedroom has a step to go down to. There is a big living room, an eat-in kitchen, and a sun porch. The house is private. I live nearby in case of any problems.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house. You can park anywhere on the property. The house is in a remote area. The nearest city is Silver City, which is about 25 miles away. There is a gas station 3 miles from the house, but gas out here is expensive. Fill up in the nearest town. The gas station has a store with limited supplies, so also worthwhile to grocery shop in town. If you forgot any thing you need, let me know-- chances are I may have it.

Other things to note
Why Kokopelli? Kokopelli is a Native American god associated with agriculture and fertility. Shown with a flute and dancing, he symbolizes happiness and joy. He is a bringer of luck and possesses healing powers. The name of the house came from the lady who built it. She wrote about that and her experience of life in the Mimbres Valley in a fabulous book called "Songs of the Fluteplayer." The fluteplayer is Kokopelli.

Weather update: It has become apparent there is a serious problem with flash flooding of the Mimbres River following the Black Fire. Yesterday (7/29), our first guests ever were unable to cross the river. There had been no rain in Mimbres that day and at 3.30 the river was low. When the guests arrived at 6 pm, they were worried the river was flowing too fast. We assured them it was fine, but went down to check. Well, it was not fine. It must have rained in the mountains and the river was now about 3 feet deep and rushing quickly, growing wider by the minute, and sweeping burned logs in its flow. At this point, every place in Mimbres was booked and there were two places remaining in Silver City. The guests had to turn back. If they had come earlier and crossed, they would have been stuck on this side of the river, as the crossing is the only way out. This is the current situation. If you would rather be safe than sorry, this is not your place. If you are willing to take a risk, we welcome your reservation at Casa Kokopelli.

The space
Comfortable suite at the Inn At Lake Roberts will give you easy access to hiking in the Gila National Forest and Wilderness; fishing at Lake Roberts; soaking at the Gila Hot Springs; or exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings. In addition to your room/suite, all guests have shared access to the lit social pavilion for grilling and "hanging out".

Other things to note
Please take note that this is a fairly remote location. The roads are windy (and beautiful!) to get here. You will need to bring food, as the nearest grocery store is almost an hour drive (Silver City). The closest restaurant is about 20 minutes away (The Log Cabin).

You can connect to the motel WiFi from the parking lot if necessary. There is also a T-mobile tower a few miles west of the motel and T-mobile phones can get service about a mile west on Hwy 35.

Inclement winter weather: please note that Highway 15 and Highway 35 are not plowed on weekends and evenings. It is rare that we get enough snow to block roads, but we are in the mountains and it can happen. The area has also experienced quite a bit of flooding this year due to heavy monsoon rains (July through October). Please watch the forecast for Lake Roberts, NM leading up to your stay.

Salt Creek Cabin in the Gila
Cabin
Grant County

Tranquil cabin at Salt Creek Ranch in the Gila National Forest. Comfy King bed, full kitchen, and a covered porch with views of horse pastures and beautiful mature trees that grow along Sapillo Creek (runs through the property). See creek crossing note... may need 4WD.

Backs up to millions of acres of public land to hike or ride for hours. Surrounded by wildlife, birds, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and more.

Lake Roberts: 2 miles
Gila Hot Springs: 15 miles
Gila Cliff dwellings: 18 miles

The space

The futon sleeper sofa easily folds out to provide a sleeping space for one additional person (though not a very large person) and faces the TV which is equipped with a DVD player and a large selection of DVDs, but does not have service outside of the movie selection. There is additional bedding and pillows in the closet.

The outdoor spaces... the front covered patio has beautiful views of the horse pastures and is equipped with a small table with chairs or two outdoor recliners to take in the views.

We welcome horses to the ranch, as well! We keep four stalls with paddocks in the barn for visiting horses. Check with us for availability and to make arrangements.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire home and the entire National Forest behind the home. You are welcome to walk your dogs down the lane/driveway, to and along Sapillo Creek.

Other things to note
NOTE: You will need to drive through a creek crossing that is usually shallow, but has been a bit higher and more volatile than usual this year so please drive a vehicle with a little clearance (a small SUV is generally just fine).

Amenities:

Hair dryer • Hot water • Shower gel • Mountain view • Free washer – In unit • Cleaning products • Shampoo • Free dryer – In unit • Conditioner • Valley view

Lake Roberts Heights Cliff Top Cabin
Cabin
Grant County

This rustic yet modernized cabin is positioned at the top of a rock face/cliff and boasts beautiful views in every direction, including the magnificent red bluffs seen on the Trail of the Mountain Spirits. Watch the sunset from the wrap-around deck to the west, or take in the views of the bluffs from the multi-level rock patio to the east. Location is within walking distance of Lake Roberts, Spirit Canyon pictograph hiking trail, and the Gila National Forest. Wonderful relaxing retreat!

The space
This lovely modern cabin will give you easy access to hiking in the Gila National Forest and Wilderness; fishing at Lake Roberts; soaking at the Gila Hot Springs; or exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

The cabin is flooded with natural light creating a pleasant uplifting place to "breathe" and relax. The kitchen is full-sized with all amenities to cook, bake, and eat. The open floor plan leads into the dining area and has a pass-through window into the living room (equipped with a wood-burning stove in addition to central heat).

The first of two bedrooms has a California King bed along with a closet, and the second bedroom has a Queen bed and a closet. Bathroom one has a standard walk-in shower. Bathroom two has a jetted tub/shower and also includes the laundry facilities. Plenty of extra towels are supplied.

The sun room is located off the living room and includes two daybeds for additional sleeping space. This area has windows all the way around for lovely light during the daytime hours or stargazing at night.

The outdoor spaces... a deck wraps around the south and west sides of the home for lovely sunset views. A great place to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer after a day of hiking, fishing, biking, riding, hunting, bird watching, or exploring! The multi-level rock patio on the east side of the cabin provides amazing views of the red rock bluffs on the Trail of the Mountain Spirits or a fabulous place to grill on the gas BBQ grill in the evening. A beautiful Kiva fireplace is also positioned on this patio.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house, patio, and deck. No shared areas.

Steep climb up Jennings Lane from Highway 35. We recommend a 4WD (doesn't need a lot of clearance, but may need power to all four wheels!). :-)

The home is one level with a wrap around deck. There are no steps leading up to the door. A multi-level patio has a combination of stairs and ramps.

Other things to note
Please take note that this is a fairly remote location. Also, the road up to the cabin is a steep climb for several hundred feet. We recommend a 4WD vehicle.

Sapillo Creek Escape welcomes you to the Gila!
House
Grant County

Sapillo Creek Escape is a one of a kind gem in the Gila Wilderness.

It is a custom designed home made by the creator of Bear Creek Motel and Lodge in Piños Altos, John Claussen. Everything from the saltillo tiles to the wood latilla ceilings were exquisitely hand-laid.

Over 3,000 square feet in the home at your disposal, this place is made for just you or you and your family and friends to enjoy the Gila Wilderness.

Fishing, birding, biking, hiking, horseback riding - adventure awaits!

The space
SAPILLO CREEK ESCAPE is entirely private with four bedrooms and three full baths! Sleeps 7 easy in one king bed, one queen bed, one full and one single. If you bring your own air mattress and our couch can get the accommodations up to 9 or 10!

This is one of a kind space hosting four full bedrooms, three with adjoining decks that show off majestic views of the Mogollon Mountains at 6,600 feet elevation. There are three full bathrooms and 4 kiva fireplaces!

Pets are allowed so long as they are socialized, housebroken, and have their recent vaccinations. Please let us know if you are planning on bringing them.

We also have space for horses - we have a pasture in the front of our property before the inclined driveway to the house. We recently had three girls and five horses out riding and it was perfect!

So if you would like to bring out a couple of horses, and put them in our pasture you're welcome to in order to explore the Gila on horseback! We do not have any shelter for them, just the pasture and some potable water through a water pump, but if you bring the rest, we would love to have you guys up with your horses.

The entire house was built by hand and it took nearly 7 years to complete. Everything is custom and I can promise you that you will never stay in a place like this!

A great location to retreat to and escape from the everyday! We want you to share Sapillo Creek Escape with your family, friends, biking crew, birding group, hiking tribe, fishing buds, and your hunting pals!

On the property itself, we recently marked off three areas which are perfect for campsites. If the weather is nice and you want to bring a tent, you are more than welcome to spend some nights under the stars at the campsites on property. Let us know if you are interested and we can show you how to get to them.

Guest access
Guests can access the whole property!

Other things to note
We will have internet access but there are no TVs in the home. We want you to disconnect while you are here and enjoy the environment around you!

We do have an AC unit but it doesn't work well because the house is built to stay cool during the days, so we rarely turn it on. We have fans and evaporative coolers in each room to help address any climate/heat issues. The tiles and the walls absorb and bring in the cool from the nights and maintain a comfortable temperature inside during the days.

Finally, I hate to even write this but this has been a problem over the years and continues to be one. We love our canine companions and understand the love and desire to travel with them and also how they often provide safety from wildlife while hiking out in the Gila. HOWEVER, many guests still allow their dogs to mark inside the house on the carpet and on the legs of our couches. As all pet owners know - this then creates a vicious cycle with all other pets that come after. It is also not easy to spot the urine stains immediately and oftentimes the accumulation is what makes the stains and smells evident.

Further, for those who are allergic to animals it isn't fair for their stays if you allow your pets on the furniture and their hair and dander gets stuck in.

So, we are getting new couches - less aesthetically marvelous but more utilitarian and able to weather the guests and the animals and we just recently commercially washed the carpets. (message written on October 13, 2024) and we will need all guests to put their pets in the crate when they are not home and can not supervise their pets. And, they need to keep their pets off of the furniture. And, if their pets soil the house and the furniture - we will need the owners to compensate for commercial cleaning and potentially replacement of the furniture. We are finding it hard for people to self-report, care for their pets in the ways we are asking them to in our home and therefore need to add this house rule.

Thank you, in advance, for understanding and keeping this home a pet-friendly home!

Sapillo Creek Escape and The Casita in the Gila!
House
Grant County

Sapillo Creek Escape and The Casita @ Sapillo Creek Escape are one of a kind in the Gila Wilderness.

These two houses are custom designed and made by the creator of Bear Creek Motel and Lodge in Pinos Altos. Everything from the saltillo tiles to the wood latilla ceilings are custom done and exquisitely hand-laid.

Over 3000 sq feet in the house & over 320 sq feet in the casita are at your disposal. This place is made you and your family and friends to enjoy the Gila Wilderness!

The space
Sapillo Creek Escape and the Casita sleeps 9 in proper mattresses and beds and up to 12 if you use the couch and bring your own air mattresses!

Sapillo Creek Escape is a one-of-a-kind space hosting four bedrooms. Three bedrooms have adjoining decks that show off the majestic views of the Mogollon Mountains at 6,600 feet elevation. There are 3 full bathrooms, 4 kiva fireplaces in the home for use.

The Casita @ Sapillo Creek Escape is an adobe cabin styled as a studio apartment with a queen bed and privacy. It sits adjacent to the home and is within 75 feet away from the front door of Sapillo Creek Escape. There is a camping toilet and a solar-powered, portable shower and two privacy tents in the back of the casita if the guests choose to use those instead of coming into the home to use the bathrooms. There is also potable well water that pumps right into the front of the casita that can be used as well.

We love animals so we allow pets so long as they are socialized and have their recent vaccinations. Please let us know if you plan on bringing your pets.

We also welcome horses in our front pasture. We have had families bring out their five horses and do a lot of riding. We do not have enclosed shelters for the horses but there is a water pump in the pasture so if you want to bring the horses you have a place to fence them in and give them water - you would have to provide their feed.

The entire house was built by hand, and it took nearly 7 years to complete. Everything is custom and I can promise you that you will never stay in a place like this!
