- "We had an amazing week at this incredible waterside property. The home is exactly as pictured, and the outdoor space offered plenty to keep us entertained. Despite some rainfall making swimming/floating in the river not possible a few days, we had lots of other options. My husband took our 4 year-old kayaking, which she loved. During our week stay, we explored Chestertown (a quick drive away), visited Rock Hall, and did chartered cruises out of Chesapeake City and St. Michael’s. You can tell the hosts take great care in their riverside home, and we are so glad they decided to share it. We’d love to come back!"

Modern 2 BR, 2 BA River House has 180-degree views of glorious sunsets
Imagine two floors of picture windows overlooking a spacious deck, and heated pool, all gazing out at one of the most historic and scenic rivers in the country. The Choptank River first navigated by European colonists in 1612 and immortalized in James Michener's novel, Chesapeake, 350 years later, beckons River House guests to walk its woods, kayak or boat its shores, and explore its historic and tranquil surroundings. This is the heart of Maryland's Eastern Shore, renowned worldwide for its crab and oysters, yet situation in the middle of just about everything without drawing attention to itself. This is Pinch Me country.
The Eastern Shore is a large, flat peninsula occupied by three states between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay--which is really an ancient estuary. There are no metropolises, no limited-access highways, no scheduled commercial airports. Less than 30 feet above sea level in most spots, it is etched by countless meandering tributaries, none 100 miles long, yet more than a couple of them--including the Choptank--2 to 4 miles wide when they reach the Bay. Weaving like blood vessels in a retina, the graceful paths of the rivers, and the marshes and grasslands they define, are reminiscent of the plains of Africa and South America. There is nothing like it in the Western Hemisphere above the equator.
One hour east of River House are the Atlantic beaches of Rehoboth and Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. An hour west puts you in the nation's capital, with Annapolis in between. Less than 90 minutes southeast is Assateague Island, famous for its beach camping, off-loading, and wild horses. Half an hour due south of River House are the superb dining and shopping of Easton and, a little further, St. Michael's and Oxford. Within easy reach north are churches with gravestones from the 1600's near Ruthsburg, the nation's first chartered college in Chestertown, and the largest weekly antique auction in the works, in Crumpton. Or head just three miles down the road to Denton and begin retracing the Underground Railroad and visit the birth places of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. both natives of the Choptank's shores.
River House offers a master bedroom with a king bed and ensuite. There is a quiet guest room on the first floor with a queen bed, a couple of steps from the second full bathroom. Additional guests could be accommodated with a queen air mattress. A wash and drier are down the hall in the laundry room. The living room provides Direct TV on a large screen next to the gas fireplace. There is a shared dock for boat access, kayaking and fishing.
This house has been a successful rental for the past 4 years and as new owners we are looking forward to providing the same quality vacation experience.
Here are some quotes from past visitors.
"Beautifully maintained home with stunning views"
This is our second stay here and this one was as ideal as the first. It's the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. From the pool to the hot tub to kayaking on the river, we really didn't need to leave the property!
"Very peaceful, private, and yet close to everything. The property is beautiful! "
"Peaceful and Relaxing"
This beautiful place on the river was just what we were looking for. A quiet, private getaway. The home is lovely, with pretty much everything we could need, including a grill for cooking out. We love the ocean as well, and being only an hour or so away from the coast we could spend a little time there, and then come back to our peaceful spot.
"Fantastic Stay at Choptank River House"
Our family spent an absolutely fantastic week at Choptank River House in late July/early August. We were looking to get away from the heat and crowds of NYC in summer with our 14-month-old and 2 dogs, and the River House could not have been more perfect. The house itself is stunning -- beautifully appointed, filled with natural light and very-well maintained, and we arrived close to midnight to find that the fridge had been stocked with an awesome array of local produce. The house is removed enough to feel like a hideaway but also just a short drive from town, and we were able to make fun day trips to nearby Saint Michael's and the Dogfish Head brewery in Delaware, although with the fantastic views of the river, our own large swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, we sometimes found it hard to motivate ourselves to leave the property.
"A lovely getaway, yet all within a 45-minute drive: Easton, Kent Narrows, St. Michaels."
Property was well-maintained; the pool was great, although we had some rain, we still enjoyed a couple beautiful pool days in the sun. Our welcome basket of fresh flowers, fruit and veggies were an elegant and very tasty treat: wonderful tomatoes, a variety of lettuce, delicious strawberries and more! We had a wonderful vacation
"Serenity by the Choptank."

- "We had a great stay at this beautiful property. We really appreciated the large fenced in yard for our dogs, and the owner communicating to let us know where some small gaps under the fence were and offering to help block them (we have a very small dog who could have wiggled under- bigger dogs would be fine.) The king bed was so comfortable, and the hot tub and pool were delightful. We hope to return!" - "Alison and Chris were very generous hosts. We were originally scheduled to stay during the weekend in June in which the sky was smoky and outdoor alerts had been issued. They kindly allowed us to switch to August and we just returned from a perfect weekend. This property is beautiful and well-equipped for a fun time. We focused on the needs of our 1 year old grandson. It was his first introduction to a real swimming pool and he loved it! The pool is just beautiful. We also found that we had an empty gas tank for the grill. Chris immediately ran out and brought a new one so that we could enjoy our cookout. I highly recommend this beautiful property!"

My husband's favorite thing was the coffee maker and mine was the screened in porch where we played card games every night (followed closely by all the eagle spottings!). A perfect spot to spend a weekend with the family." - "Our family had a wonderful stay here. The house was impeccably clean, beautiful, and fully stocked with anything we could need. We love to cook, and the kitchen had everything we needed and more - including a beautiful view! We had a great time on the water. It was almost impossible to pull the kids away! Kids and adults both enjoyed water toys, kayaks, and just relaxing on the dock. I’d give this property more than 5 stars if I could!"

Summary:
Blake House represents one of the oldest colonial homes in Maryland, built by British settler, Charles Blake, of London, England, in 1691. The house is nestled within 12 acres of manicured gardens, boasting an abundance of indigenous and foreign flora, and surrounded by direct water access. But the most unique feature of this property is the Crown and Anchor Inn (circa. 1735), originally located in Southern Baltimore and moved to the estate in 1941.
The Space:
The estate boasts limitless amenities to ensure guests of all ages, sensibilities and sizes are entertained for days and days. Blake House offers an open plan living experience with expansive water views. Blake House has four ensuite bedrooms (one on the first floor). The grounds offer a 100ft pier with 10,000lb boat lift, outdoor corn hole and bocce ball courts, multiple outdoor dining areas, orchid potting shed, sauna house, fire-pits, lookouts, Kayaks, canoe, paddle board, and nature trails. The Crown and Anchor has a bar, seating, wood burning fireplace, billards table, foose ball, and mini dance floor. The Inn has two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a viewing platform on the second floor.
Be prepared to immerse yourself in the storybook of Blake House. You will not want to leave this magical place.
Don't forget to ask about our Elevated Experiences, including massage and Chef services!
Other Things to Note:
Whilst Blake House is a great place to host events, please be aware that there is a $100 per person, per day, fee when guests exceed 12.
Pet fees are $50 per pet, per night, with a cap of three pets at any one time. Please ensure pets are kept off furniture and beds. Pets are also not allowed to enter the pool as this seriously destabilizes the chemicals and damages the filter system. Violations of these rules will incur additional fees and/or penalties.
Please note that due to insurance and county guidelines a property specific rental agreement will have to be completed prior to your stay.
Interaction with Guests:
We are available 24/7 to answer all questions and address any concerns. We also offer assistance in making your stay extra special and exceeding guest’s expectations. If you can imagine it, we will do our best to make it happen!
- "We had a wonderful time at Blake House with our extended family. Lots of room for everyone and we all loved the property, pool and offerings. The elevated welcome package, yoga session (for 11 of us!) and Chef Erica and team dinner were such incredible experiences. It was a perfect vacation. Highly recommend!!" - "Everything about the property was as advertised and more. We had a range of children, parents and grandchildren, everyone agreed that we must return. Home is comfortable, hosts are communicative and welcoming, the property is beautiful and peaceful. Pool and kayaking were great. Wonderful views for outdoor dining. A very special place."

With thoughtful amenities (we played cards one evening after perusing the games available in the dining room credenza) and a well-appointed kitchen, we found everything we needed to make a weekend of Washington College events in Chestertown enjoyable. The bedrooms each have incredibly comfortable mattresses (as advertised) and the bathrooms are all nicely equipped with plush towels. Should you need to throw something in the wash, an efficient washer and dryer are accessible. With a location adjacent the scenic Chester River bridge, it was easy to zip in and out of town for all our numerous activities. Set on 6 acres overlooking the beautiful Corsica River amidst idyllic farms, your home away from home
calls. A 5-bedroom, 6.5-bath waterfront oasis, Middle Fox Cove is the key to unlocking a memorable
getaway you will never want to leave behind.
This 5000 square foot residence is a tranquil masterpiece that makes room for relaxing and recreating.
Outside, the sprawling lawn is ideal to play lawn games (croquet and badminton are provided) or stroll
around the gardens. A magnificent heated pool overlooks the river, with comfortable loungers making
for a relaxing afternoon. A gated fence surrounds the pool area for additional safety.
Inside, windows stretch practically floor to ceiling along the entire waterfront side of the house, with
sunset views of the Corsica River and the rolling farmland on its banks. The dining room overlooks both
the Corsica and the pool, providing scenic views in all directions (as well as allowing you to keep an eye on little ones in the pool area). Around the corner, the lovely open kitchen serves up a design to meet all your vacation needs. Next to the dining area, a family room with 75 inch TV and a wood-burning fireplace provides a warm and welcoming place to read, watch TV, and gather as a group. A more formal living area with airy vaulted ceilings beckons with a wood-burning stove, and its sliding doors open to a screened in veranda perfect for sunset cocktails. Connected to the family room and kitchen, you’ll find two more areas to enjoy, a game room with air-hockey and a screened-in porch — the ideal space for gathering with family and friends throughout the day and evening. Downstairs, a game room with air-hockey and children’s toys provides a perfect gathering space for the kids…and the adjacent movie room
is special place for kids of all ages to have an evening’s entertainment!
When it’s time to fall asleep, the first-floor primary suite overlooking the water is designed to help you unwind thanks to its king bed, walk-in closet, soaking tub, walk-in shower, and comfortable reading chairs to enjoy a quiet moment. Another first floor en-suite bedroom has a comfortable queen bed and looks out over the rolling front lawn. The second floor presents two spacious en-suite bedrooms with
magnificent water views, one with a king and another with a queen and a daybed. Downstairs, a cozy bunk-room with a water view and a full bathroom provides a comfortable sleeping area for up to eight. Together, the 5 bedrooms create a comfortable set-up tailor-made for groups of all sizes. And then there’s the home’s nautical allure.
On the banks of the Corsica River, the ultimate alfresco backdrop is yours to explore — whether you’re looking to take in scenic views, get out on the water (on
one of the 5 kayaks or 1 canoe provided) or simply relax on the glider bench on the dock, savoring the serenity rolling in all around you and watching the ducks and turtles paddle by. As evening arrives, gather on Adirondack chairs around the fire pit to roast s’mores and enjoy the star studded sky.
Although the home’s peaceful surroundings will transport you to a place where the outside world doesn’t exist, in reality, the charming towns of the Eastern Shore are mere moments from your doorstep. Just two minutes away by car or ten minutes by
bike, the tiny hamlet of Centreville has a farmers market, several restaurants and cafes, and most importantly – an ice cream shop! (It also has a convenient supermarket.) Fifteen minutes away the riverfront Chestertown beckons with its numerous
restaurants, art galleries, and farmers market. Easton is thirty minutes in the other direction, with its fine dining and boutiques, and another twenty minutes takes you to the quaint harbor town of St. Michaels with its waterfront restaurants and the Chesapeake Maritime Museum. Be sure to sample the many local restaurants, visit the farmers markets, take a cocktail cruise, or embrace the Maryland tradition of hot steamed crabs washed down by cold beer. Whatever the occasion, Middle Fox Cove is a chance to escape your routine and curate a vacation for everyone to enjoy.
- "The hosts were incredibly responsive to all of our needs and the house is even better than the pictures. 10/10 recommend and we look forward to staying here again." - "It was a great vacation, the house and grounds were spectacular, the amenities, pool, kayaks, were great, and host couldn’t have been more accommodating or approachable, highly recommend in the future, hope to go back" - "Ages 4 months to 87 had a lovely time! We really enjoyed the pool, boats/paddleboards, and fishing off the dock. Everyone had space to spread out across the sprawling house, and the windows and porch overlooking the water made for amazing sunsets. This was just the quiet retreat we all needed to get away from it all!"

- "My kids and I absolutely loved our stay at the Outlook! So peaceful and relaxing. We spent a lot of time walking around the trails spotting deer and toads. We did a good amount of fishing on the dock, catching catfish. I hope to stay here again in the future." - "My family and I had the best time at the Outrange. The house is super cool. But the access to hiking, kayaking and even goats made it perfect. Ben is super good at communication. He responded to any of my questions quickly. I can't say enough about it. Definitely would stay again!" - "A group of 7 friends had a wonderful weekend at this beautiful property. We especially enjoyed the hot tub on a cold winter night, hiking around the snowy woods, and the lovely details of the historic buildings. Everything was clean and well cared for. Note that in the guest house, the only bathroom is in one of the bedrooms, which was a little awkward when we were expecting to have our own rooms. - "A lovely clean house in a peaceful beautiful location. My two oldest grandchildren (10&12) enjoyed the separate bedrooms and pool, the four year old found the cabinets of toys and was so happy that he didn’t need to unpack the ones he bought Thank you for your hospitality." - "The home was nice - great to fit our group of 12, good room for sitting and dining and sleeping, and a nice open layout with the kitchen opening up to the living room. The host also was quite communicative. Overall, this was a good stay.Cons:The biggest offense lacking was that there were no real kitchen knives (one utensil mostly resembled a knife) which made preparing a meal for 12 quite difficult. There also was not shampoo/conditioner/body wash provided in the bathrooms. The hot tub also failed to get hot (which could have our fault for not turning it on early enough?) but there was also a warning about the water rotation being 66 days overdue; the TV screen was cracked which distorted color on the screen; and at least 1 of the dining chairs was broken. - "This was a much needed weekend away and we hit the jackpot! Communication with our host was excellent and so accommodating. We searched for a place where we could relax and have fun, and this rental checked all the boxes. Beautifully decorated, picturesque setting, with all the special touches. I would rent this home again and work with this host for any other properties. " - "Our stay was like house sitting for a good friend or family member. We were very comfortable and this was easily the best stocked rental we've ever stayed in. The host has thought of almost everything you could need and keeps a spotless rental. We can't comment on the second floor as our other family members had to cancel at the last minute, but a quick look-see showed that it was well stocked, too. Bad weather kept us from enjoying the outside, but I'm sure it is quite nice in the summer. The house sits off of a fairly busy two lane road, but we were pleasantly surprised at how little noise we heard and that wasn't often or intrusive. Having a washer and dryer, a large frig/freezer and dishwasher made the stay easily managed, even for a larger group. With hotel rooms in the area frequently having ridiculous prices, this gem of a rental for a family is greatly appreciated. We will return!"

Guest access
On site property manager:
We just built a privacy fence between the Lodge and the garage.
April 13th, 2025, we will have a property manager who will be living in the garage apartment next door.
The property manager will not be seen on your side of the property during your stay. However, if you do have an issue we can handle it right away.
Keep in mind you can hear noises on the other side of the fence at times when you're outside like a car starting, doors closing, and distant voice if they are coming or going.
Firewood for outside pit: bring your own wood.
The Wigwam Cabin’s name pays tribute to the earliest known inhabitants of this region.
For more on the rich Native American history of the Delmarva peninsula, see our reading list on the loft which includes such titles as John Smith's Chesapeake Voyages by Helen Rountree and The Nanticoke Indians of North America by Frank Porter.
Other things to note
*Winter guests agree to use our outdoor wood fireplace/boiler to heat the house. Guests will load it every 8hrs. We have instructions here for you. Open the door, toss in firewood, shut the door. It adds to the the experience and makes it very cozy, even heating the floors.
*Our house rules have specific terms of service you will need to read thoroughly*
Let us know if you're ok with our house rules :)
