An understated area of outstanding natural beauty, largely undiscovered by the masses – The Forest remains a playground whether your interest is industrial heritage, wildlife or outdoor pursuits – its got something for everyone.

Clean, budget bungalow in the heart of the Forest.

2 Bedrooms with 1 double bed and the other 2 single beds.

Sleeps 4

Staying in the Forest: The ancient Forest of Dean – historically an industrial area which was founded in Roman times for iron-ore mining, sometimes being described as the “Sheffield of the South”. This however resulted in the large-scale decimation of the ancient forest, only to be replanted in the 1700s for planned future ship-building.

As former royal hunting grounds, the area was extensively mined for coal in the 18th & early 19th centuries with industry in decline in the 20th century. The Wye valley is formally designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

With great access to birds, wildlife, canoeing, caving, cycling, walking or simply stunning countryside.
Please call to discuss your needs and we’ll point you in the right direction so you get exactly what you want from your countryside break.

Guest Reviews:

- "I went to the hollies with my sister - to get away from it all, on the one-year anniversary of losing my dearest husband of 30 years...I couldn't have chosen better! The bungalow is lovely - very clean, warm and comfortable...everything has been catered for, it has a 'homey' feeling about it, and the garden is amazing. We were able to get to all the places my hubby and I used to visit (within minutes) and I scattered some of his ashes in his favourite woods. Maurice is lovely, and I would def recommend a visit, I'm hoping to go again in spring"

Guest Reviews:

- "We had a really comfortable stay - 5 adults and 4 dogs (by special arrangement). Plenty of room for us all, and made even better by some mainly fine weather so we sat in the lovely garden much of the time. We dined at the Miners Arms and had a friendly welcome and great food. The house really is appointed nicely with no expense spared on the furnishings and fittings. The bed linen, carpets and towels were all luxurious. A few really tiny things let it down and may help others - lack of any oven gloves or tea towels (I burned my arm on the oven while juggling a hot baking tin), not enough clothes pegs or loo rolls, the driveway was "interesting" to turn into, batteries in TV remote had run out and perhaps a guide on local dog walks from the house would have been good. As i said these were minor and overall its a lovely comfortable and spacious home with lots of creature comforts and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to anyone."

Hazel Studio in the beautiful Forest of Dean
Apartment
Forest of Dean District

Unwind, de-stress and relax in our light, airy, comfortable, self-contained, modern studio a few yards from our cottage in Hangerberry. Hazel studio is situated on the edge of the Wye Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty and the North West edge of the Royal Forest of Dean.

Stay includes self-serve breakfast. Easy to find and a perfect location for a long weekend or a longer stay to enjoy this beautiful part of the UK. Overlooked by nothing but trees, lie in bed and watch the stars.

The space
Our studio is open plan with a kitchen and separate shower room.

Stay in and cook or visit one of our friendly local pubs for home-cooked food or the village Fish and Chip shop which is 3 minutes walk away.

The kitchen area has a full size cooker/grill, a toaster, electric kettle and all the pots, pans and utensils you will need to cook light meals while you stay. The shower room also has a pedestal sink, toilet, heated towel rail, a hair dryer, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, face soap and body wash) and constant on demand hot water. The sitting area has two comfortable chairs and is equipped with a flat screen TV and DVD player with a selection of movies. The heating system is separate to our cottage and at your control.

We now have dedicated superfast fibre broadband and a desk, chair, work light and a surge powerlead in the studio.

We will stock the studio with breakfast ingredients including a range of organic and herbal teas, freshly ground and instant coffee, a variety of cereals, organic milk, fruit, home-made bread, organic butter, spreadable butter, peanut butter, marmite, and a selection of jams and marmalades.

The bed is an English double (4'6") size with a brand new hypoallergenic luxury spring mattress and organic cotton bedding.

Please note that you need to be able to climb stairs as the studio is one flight up from the ground.

There is a washing machine and dryer available downstairs for guests who have booked to stay longer than a week.

We have storage for up to 3 bikes in our shed with a facility to lock them to a bolted on, internal fixing. We don't supply chains or padlocks and storage is at your own risk.

The space is extremely clean (check out our reviews). All bedding and towels are washed at 60 degrees, bedding is always steam ironed and we clean and sanitize all surfaces between reservations. The studio has anti-bacterial spray and hand sanitiser for guest use.

Guest access
The studio is completely private. It is a separate building to our cottage and has it's own staircase leading up to it. Apart from a very small balcony with a bench, there is no other outdoor space included with this property. There is free on-street parking next to our little garden.

Other things to note
All potential guests please note:

The studio has low ceilings in places.

Our studio is a loft with velux windows. If it rains and you are a light sleeper, you may hear it on the glass....please bring earplugs :)

Please make sure you check out our location in the Forest if you are thinking of booking the studio. It's very easy to get to lots of other places such as Coleford, Monmouth and Ross on Wye from here and I'm very happy to answer any queries you may have before you do so.

We live next door so if there is anything you need or can't find, or any local information you want to know that we haven't provided, pop round and ask us, or give me a call. Everything that is listed on the advert is in the loft, so please look in the drawers to find the frying pans, hairdryer etc....:)

There is no hot-tub, garden or outside space (apart from a bench on a very small balcony outside the studio door) included in this listing. We are in the Forest of Dean, so access to the countryside is a few minutes walk from the property.

There are a lot of birds here. You definitely will hear birdsong, owls hooting etc....you may also be really lucky and see badgers, wild boar (do not approach them) and deer.....

I am happy to offer a 10% discount for solo guests. Please enquire before you book so I can adjust the calendar prices.

We have had and are very happy to have families with one to two children (max) however the open steps to the studio are a safety issue and we do not supply bedding or beds for children. It may be suitable for you if you are happy to monitor your child in and out of the space and are able to provide bedding and are happy to all be in one room. See previous family reviews and please enquire with your details before booking...

(July 2024) Finally I have just lost my superhost status as the studio has been closed for most of this year due to ongoing family commitments, so sadly I have not met the number of bookings needed. I hope to be able to open it a bit more later in the autumn and next year. There is some improved furniture and I will be posting new photos soon.

There is ample free onstreet parking and off street parking is available for motorbikes only.

The space
With one upstairs double bedroom with ensuite toilet and shower, this property lends itself best to a couple looking to get away and enjoy the scenic Forest of Dean. However, there is also a childs single bed in the main bedroom and a double sofa in the front room, that can be used for those either travelling with children or looking to keep costs down by sharing space. We do not recommend using all these beds at the same time as the amount of living space is not suited to this many guests.
Downstairs is a lounge with small but functional kitchenette with oven, microwave, kettle and toaster.
Outside there is courtyard garden with private access. Seating for 4, plus space for bike storage (please bring your own security chain) along with a cubby house and sandpit to amuse the children.
In the past we have found it difficult to find holiday accommodation that allows pets. We are pet friendly, although the size of the premises and gardens does not lend itself to large animals. If you wish to save money on boarding fees, we also have a run for small pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits- but please notify us in advance so we can give a few instructions.

Other things to note
Please note: There are a number of stairs to access the accommodation and the bedroom is also upstairs- please see photos. Please take care with the steep stairs and supervise any children at all times.
