Forest of Dean Romantic & Rustic Holiday Cottage
Cottage
Yorkley, England, United Kingdom

Up a forest track, the third of four properties with forest outlook immediately to the front and forest walks right from the doorstep, The Old Chapel has been sympathetically converted to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It oozes character. It is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population approx 1,000). The cottage is 80% pine clad (walls and ceilings) giving it a very warm and relaxing feel throughout. It has been furnished to give a 'home from home' feel all in wood and/or neutral colours. The general atmosphere is rustic, with mostly wooden floors and brick window cills, it is something 'a bit different'.
Our favourite time to stay in the Forest is the first week in June when all the trees and plants are newly out and the view from our sofas is stunning.
There are two bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both rooms have a double bed, so the cottage accommodates four people comfortably.
The upstairs bedroom is on a mezzanine overlooking the lounge. There is no door to this room.
The downstairs bedroom is just off the lounge and could affect light sleepers.
The only things that wake you up is birdsong!
The lounge/dining room is large, and looks larger because it has 14 foot high ceilings, mostly covered in wood panelling. We have three sofas in the lounge, all of which are comfortable - who doesn't want to relax on holiday?
The beast of a wood burner in the lounge gives a very relaxed feel in the evenings, along with some candles which we keep there. Very romantic!
The kitchen is small but very well stocked as we like cooking (and eating).
There is a dishwasher and a 6 foot tall fridge/freezer - more than enough to store a week's food for a family.
The garden is small, but there is a forest on the doorstep.
We have two reclining garden chairs in the back garden and a small BBQ should you wish to 'eat out'.
We hate holiday places that have no character, and have tried really hard to make sure that our one does . It is very well furnished so there should not be anything missing for your stay, but if there is, please let us know!
If you are bringing a little one with you, we keep a travel cot, stairgate and high chair in the cottage.
A really romantic place to escape, leave all your troubles behind and just chill!

Guest Reviews:

- "Doreen was an excellent host who communicated very well, prompt, helpful and incredibly friendly. The old chapel was heaven the only noise you heard when you woke was bird song. The level of comfort was far superior to anywhere else we have stayed. The old chapel was equipped with everything you needed and more including a folder with anything you needed to know and more. The neighbours are super friendly and everyone stop to chat. The surrounding area was beautiful and peaceful. If you want to go somewhere when life was more simple and unwind and relax then the old chapel is the place to go. It was the most amazing wonderful Christmas break."

From the mythical beauty of Puzzlewood to the inspiring Sculpture Trail and the dramatic views at Symonds Yat Rock, every path tells a story.

After a day of discovery, the choice is yours: settle into a welcoming country pub for a hearty meal crafted from local produce, or return to your cosy cottage where a glowing log burner and bubbling hot tub beneath the stars await. Tucked away in the tranquil heart of the Forest of Dean, you're never too far from adventure or a change of pace. Gloucester is just 35 minutes away, with its historic docks and cathedral, while the elegant spa town of Cheltenham — on the edge of the Cotswolds — is around 45 minutes by car. Head west and you'll reach the Herefordshire border in just 25 minutes at Ross-on-Wye, or travel a little further to explore the charm of Hereford City in under an hour. South Wales is also within easy reach, with Monmouth about 45 minutes away and the stunning Wye Valley and Symonds Yat just 40 minutes from our doorstep. And if the sea calls, pack a picnic and head to the coast — Weston-super-Mare and Porthcawl are your nearest beaches, but our favourite is Newton Beach in Porthcawl. With its sand dunes, sea views, and dog-friendly shoreline all year round, it’s the perfect spot for a windswept wander or a sunny day out with the whole family — four-legged friends included.

- "Great property; clean and well equipped. Fully recommended - would book again!" - "We had a nice stay at the chapel. Lots to do and see around. Thanks you!" - "We are Mum, Dad, Son and Grandpa ranging in ages of 16 to 89. The stairs creak badly if anyone wants the bathroom at night so not good for light sleepers. If you sleep like a log you would be fine here. Beds were comfy and clean, Kitchen was well equipped and Lounge had lots of games, films and music to suit most tastes. Nice to see washing up liquid supplied, but you do need to take a few dishwasher tablets and loo rolls with you. Didn't use heating, but hob and shower were fine. I would recommend for a week away as lots of eating/take away places within a few miles."

Wye Valley Forest Retreat: Secluded Cottage which sleeps six & dogs very welcome
Cottage
Lydbrook, England, United Kingdom

A guest recently commented: "We were blown away by how stunning both the views and the cottage is; having seen the photos on the website, we knew it was going to be gorgeous, but being there in reality took it to a whole new level, it's so peaceful and serene".

Perched high in the Royal Forest of Dean, with breath-taking views across the Wye Valley & Brecon Beacons, an intimate but spacious Cottage for up to 6 people & their dogs; outside, you'll find a huge, private, decking with Hot Tub & Sauna.

Our Forest Retreat is perfect all year round, for those looking for relaxation, adventure; step or cycle into the forest or to the banks of the Wye for splendid walks, canoeing and a host of other activities and fun (+ some great Ale Houses/Pubs!).

Jay, one of our recent guests, said "The cottage embodied so much character and charm and proved to be the perfect getaway; it’s a truly amazing and magical place".

Originally built for a local miner in the 1850's, the Cottage still retains much of it's original charm e.g. thick walls, low ceilings and narrow entrances; but much of it has been refurbished to modern standards, over 5 levels of intimate and deceptively spacious living.

As Emily, a recent guest, said: "A cosy but spacious house which allowed everyone their own space when needed but also fantastic communal areas with beautiful views out of every window."

It's perfect as a base for up to 6 guests, and their dogs, to retreat from the world, but with easy access to a multitude of adventures and fun - we have plenty of ideas if you need them.

- "Recently updated so modern and clean throughout. Hot tub was the main attraction where you can watch the sunset over the forest. Short walk to Cinderford town centre where there are basic shops and food places. Short walk to the forest and to a great playpark on the Rec. No dishwasher would be the only disadvantage and steep steps down to the front door if you are not as mobile. Otherwise great stay and great property"

Edith's Cottage Forest of Dean
Cottage
Forest of Dean District

A warm welcome to our charming mid-terrace cottage with direct access into the woods by bike and foot with free use of 3 bikes (adults only). Perfect for couples, friends & families with a king sized bed & 2 singles.
We have a warming wood burner, sunny cottage garden & patio. So peaceful, walking distance to 2 excellent pubs, village shop, cafes, bike hire & the Dean Forest Railway. Ideally located for cycling, walking, RSPB, Puzzlewood & other local attractions. Knowledgeable, local hosts

The space
We renovated the cottage to create a peaceful home from home, light and bright and full of original character. The cottage is on the edge of the popular village of Parkend on a no through lane, looking out over fields and woods and passed by the family cycle track. It's a brilliant location for walking or cycling straight out into the Forest, or whiling away a summer afternoon in the garden listening to the occasional 'toot' of a steam train.

The cottage is reached down a wide flight of steps to a sunny courtyard with seating. Whilst not steep, access may be difficult for guests with limited mobility. A secure, lockable stone shed houses the washing machine and has plenty of space for bikes.
The front door opens straight into the kitchen / diner, well equipped with a dishwasher, electric oven & ceramic hob, fridge with ice box and wonderful old dresser. The table comfortably seats 4 with plenty of room to cook and chat, or spread out a map and plan your days. A child's high chair is available on request. I enjoy sharing local knowledgeable to get you off the beaten track and provide information of what's on locally, favourite walks, times of the Severn Bore to music and events as well as lots of leaflets on local attractions, maps, walking guides and guide books. If you have a particular interest please ask.
The sitting room has original panelling, comfy sofas, a smart TV, books, maps & guides, phone and wifi as well as a lovely old fireplace with a modern, efficient wood burner. We provide kindling, matches and logs (we cut & season our own firewood from conservation projects). Nothing beats a good fire on a winters night! The wood burner is supplemented by modern electric wall heaters throughout. The sitting room also looks out through French windows onto the pretty cottage back garden and patio with outdoor table and chairs, perfect for the summer. Please note that there are 3 un-guarded steps down into the garden and a low shrub border separates the garden from a neighbouring shallow garden pond. Toddlers and young children must be supervised at all times in the garden.
The bathroom opens off of the sitting room with a large electric shower - we do not have a bath!
The stairs leading off the sitting room are relatively steep and narrow leading to a twin bedroom looking out over fields to woods and a double bedroom with a King bed and its original Victorian fireplace, looking out over the gardens. Curtains are supplemented with blackout blinds for a good nights sleep. Sparrows nest along the terrace and may use the nest box outside the twin bedroom window. In spring and summer there may be a loud dawn chorus.
All linens including quality bedding and towels are supplied. A stair gate, child's bedrail and travel cot available on request (bring your own cot bedding). We also supply washing up liquid, dish washer & washing machine consumables, loo roll, milk and starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper. I like to do some home baking too, please let me know of any dietary restrictions.
We welcome car free guests and can arrange taxis from Lydney station (4 miles away). We provide 3 bikes (for adults use only) for your use. Brilliant for exploring the miles of car free cycle tracks and enjoying the peace of the forest. Please contact me in advance if you want to borrow the bikes for our Ts & Cs. Extra bikes including children's and mountain bikes can be hired in the village (booking advised).
Since 2021 we have donated £5 per booking to our local Forest Food bank

Guest access
You will have the whole cottage to yourselves. There is free unallocated communal parking outside the cottages and we provide a map to show where to park. As a courtesy to our neighbours we ask that only 1 car is parked immediately adjacent to the terrace - there is extra parking close by.

Other things to note
A low, dense shrub border separates one side of the garden from its neighbour which includes a shallow pond. For this reason young children must be supervised.
Limited mobile phone reception in Parkend - we have a landline in case of emergencies and for incoming calls only. Sheep (and sometimes wild boar!) roam freely locally so please shut the gate to stop the flowers being chomped! Electric vehicles cannot be charged at the cottage because of access. Sorry no pets or smoking.

Meadow Byre
Cottage
Forest of Dean District

Meadow Byre is one of our Forest Barn cottages in our private hamlet. We are in the most idyllic rural location with no passing traffic as any traffic there is coming to the hamlet. Woodland walks are straight from your cottage door. Lovely walks to amazing viewing points over the Severn flood plain and to three connected lakes in the valley bottom.

The space
Forest Barn Holidays has created this luxury, five star, holiday home from a former milking barn. The ceiling is vaulted with exposed oak beams and ample proportions. The property has parking next to it and a level walk from the car park onto the flag stoned pretty courtyard.

The property is suitable for those with reduced mobility as it is all on one level - note: just two very shallow steps to the master bedroom, there is a handrail. The balance of the property is all on one level. Hence suitable for those who can take their own weight but just need a level going.

The front access door is a half glazed stable door and opens onto the honey natural limestone covering the underfloor heating. Kitchen to the left with Shaker style units belies the presence of a fully equipped kitchen: dishwasher etc..

Guest access
Guests have complete control of Meadow Byre and its courtyard and rear area with hot tub. There are open areas and directions to them to areas which are open to other residents and most importantly those areas do not affect other guests and their holiday home.

Other things to note
Meadow Byre is one of our holiday cottages within our private hamlet. We own the whole hamlet so are in complete control. Geoff and I live on site so try to be available during office hours to assist.

Wye Valley Forest Retreat
Cottage
Forest of Dean District

Located high in The Royal Forest of Dean, with breathtaking views across the Wye Valley and Black Mountains, a delightful and intimate cottage for up to 6 people and their dogs. With a Hot Tub, Sauna and a Log Fire to cozy up to, it's ideal for adventurers or for those seeking a relaxing or romantic forest hideaway. Swedish Massages and other spa treatments are available and lovers of good beer have plenty of choice and there's a good selection of eateries and restaurants close by.

The space
As one of our guests recently said: "Truly a stunning Cottage, the pictures really don't do it justice... I would recommend it highly to couples or families looking for a getaway in a stunning Cottage & location."

Built in the 1850's and retaining much of it’s original charm, the Cottage has been extended on 5 levels of delightful, spacious, yet intimate living; most rooms open to a huge decking with a Sauna and a Hot Tub ready for you to enjoy the amazing views or gaze at the constellations.

For that extra touch of luxury, we can organise Swedish Massages and other Spa Treatments (paid for separately).

Within the Cottage, you'll find many original features, including a Log Fire to cozy up to; it also has low ceilings and thick and uneven walls, but the Cottage has been modernised to a high specification, on 5 levels, with 3 bedrooms*, one en-suite, a superb family bathroom, cloakroom/toilet, three lounges/living rooms and a shabby chic dining room.

The kitchen is traditional & fully equipped, with a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge/freezer, range cooker, filter cafeteria, toaster and all the essentials you’ll need for preparing meals.

Bedrooms: Room 1: Ensuite with King bed, Room 2: Double Bed, Room 3: 'Adult Size' Bunk Beds. We’ll make up the beds and provide bath and hand towels.

Many of the living rooms open to a huge decking area, for al fresco dining, wrapping up in front of the chiminea or relaxing in the hot tub and sauna - all with breath-taking views of the Wye Valley and Black Mountains.

Throughout, you will find comfortable, quality furnishings & décor reflecting the rustic nature of the Cottage and it's surroundings; you will also find a good range of facilities and extra touches - all designed to make you feel welcome and at home.

Roam, perhaps rest awhile, in the large rustic garden; regularly visited by pheasants and home to many species of birds, rabbits, other wildlife. You’ll feel secluded in this Forest retreat; a home from home where you can relax after a day’s activities in the forest, at Symonds Yat, elsewhere on the River Wye or further afield to the 'Three Choirs' Cathedral Cities of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester.

It's not a party house, but guests are provided with an excellent entertainment system including three flat screen TVs, a DVD, Amazon Prime, Netflix a DVD with a multitude of movies, a surround sound music system, turntable and selection of vinyl (and turntable) and Bluetooth Speakers.

There’s free Wifi throughout the cottage, though it’s an old house with very thick walls, so some rooms have a better connection than others.

We provide tea, sugar, filter coffee, towels, tea towels, oven gloves, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, herbs, salt & pepper, cooking oil, detergent and - between October and March - a basket of logs for the fire

Guests have access to the controls for our heating system, so they can ensure they are cozy on winter nights.

The nearest pub is a few minutes walk, mostly on an off road track; it's a 3 minute drive to a shop/post office and there's a good selection of pubs, eateries and restaurants within a 15 - 30 minute drive.

Guest access
The Cottage is detached, set in it's own grounds/garden and not overlooked by neighbours; the whole of the cottage and garden are for the exclusive use of guests. Within the Cottage, there are plenty of rooms and nooks and crannies for guests to find their own space to read, listen to music or meditate.

We have off road parking for up to three cars - there is no available apace for other cars.

Other things to note
The Cottage and garden is not really suitable for toddlers or people with mobility problems; the garden is 'rustic', but has well defined paths that we ask guests to keep to; and to supervise children.

We welcome dogs, and ensure that the garden has good fencing, but if guests bring dogs with a reputation for determined escape, we ask that they keep on eye on them!

Neighbours are not easily spotted but they are reasonably closeby; and need their sleep, so we ask that guests respect our 'House Rule' to keep noise to a minimum after 11pm.

Swedish Massages and other Spa Treatments are available from vositing therapists - paid for separately.

There are no shops within easy walking distance, but there is a pub!
