Guest Reviews:

- "Superb location with wonderful views and very peaceful. Lovely walks from the log cabin down to Tintern and in the nearby area, including Offa's Dyke. Chepstow and Monmouth nearby for shops and cafe's. Scored lower for comfort as the leather settee was uncomfortable. If there had been 4 people staying the settee would have been a little too cosy for 3 people and the 4th person would be on one of the plastic dining chairs. Dining chairs not as shown in the photo on the cottages.com website. A couple of armchairs are required please. Also, no round table outside, just a teddy bear picnic table. The hot tub was excellent. We were told that it would automatically switch off after use. It didn't! You need to actually press the button to turn it off otherwise it continues to run at various times throughout the night. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo"

- "Lovely property and all as described. Will book again in the future." - "We had a great time in this cottage. The living space is ideal, open plan with the well-equipped kitchen merging into a large living space. The wood-burning stove is a lovely feature and having a large screen TV and DVD player was handy too. All the bedrooms were clean and finished nicely and with each one having an en-suite, there were no bathroom queues. The large garden was great for the dogs to let off steam and we'd definitely book again. Although it is a lovely, quiet setting, be aware there's not a lot of 'life' in Penallt and we struggled to find a local store for instance, so bring what you'll need to survive on until you can get to do some shopping . The local pub (The Boat) is at the bottom of a steep hill, so coming back is definitely a longer walk (25-35 mins) than getting there!"

Guest Reviews:

- "Lovely cottage in a fabulous location. Views are amazing and the hot tub great after a days hiking. The robes and slippers along with a welcome basket was a lovely touch. Communication was easy and instructions great. Could of done with a clothes airer to dry the stuff that cant go in the washer dryer after a very wet and muddy hike but we managed. Maybe some bigger pots and pans if your cooking for 4 or 6 could be helpful. Again, we managed. Would stay again."

Also, milk, eggs, and some Welsh cakes too.Gorgeous views and lovely open landscape around. For us it wasn't walkable to the pub though, as the road isn't safe at night. At the heart of Vauxhall Cottage is a wonderful large farmhouse kitchen - a great place to gather and chat with your family or friends. Centred around a big pine dining table, the well-equipped kitchen provides a light and airy sociable space, with views across Chepstow and the Wye Valley.

The spacious and comfortable living room has two sofas and a wood burning stove for cosy evenings. The "under stairs" cupboard is packed full of boardgames. Alternatively, the bright and sunny garden room overlooking the patio is a great place for a quieter moment, perhaps to read or to try one of the jigsaws!

For work or study whilst away, there is a large desk in the private office room, and fast wifi. This study has a tiled floor and is right by the back door, so could be used for keeping muddy boots, pets, bicycles, etc. if preferred. The bookshelf might offer some new reading material too. Also downstairs is a utility room, with a sink and washing machine, and a handy downstairs loo and coat cupboard.

Upstairs, the large master bedroom has an ensuite shower room and a king-sized bed, with far-reaching views across Chepstow, the Wye Valley and the Severn Estuary. The second bedroom can be configured to requirements, either as a double room (with super-king bed) or a twin-bed room with two single beds, whilst the cosy third bedroom has a double bed. All bedrooms have drawers and wardrobes or hanging space. There is a family bathroom upstairs, with a shower and big roll-top bath.

Outside there is a good sized, enclosed and private cottage garden, with an area of lawn. In spring and summer, the patio area can be a real sun trap, and offers a table and chairs and a charcoal BBQ. Guests may be lucky enough to enjoy a stunning aerial display from visiting swifts, especially on the kitchen side of the house.

Vauxhall Cottage has its own covered off-road parking area, with parking for 2 cars or transit-sized vans. A third vehicle can usually be squeezed in if needed. There is limited on-street parking nearby.

The cottage is just a few minutes walk from Chepstow town centre, which offers a variety of shops, restaurants, takeaways and bars. If you are visiting Chepstow for an event, the cottage is very well placed for an easy drive to Chepstow racecourse, David Broome Event Centre, and the local wedding venues at St Tewdrics, Mounton Brooke and St Pierre. For walkers, the Offa's Dyke path, Wye Valley walk and Wales Coast path are all within easy reach.

Chepstow itself boasts several notable features that make it an interesting destination, and a great base for a short break or longer visit:

Chepstow Castle: One of the oldest surviving stone fortresses in Britain, Chepstow Castle is a remarkable attraction. Built in the 11th century, it offers panoramic views of the River Wye and the town. Visitors can explore its impressive towers, gatehouses, and walls while immersing themselves in medieval history.

Picturesque Riverside Setting: Situated on the banks of the River Wye, Chepstow enjoys a delightful location. The scenic riverside area has free music on the bandstand in the summer, and is always a popular place to sit and relax. You might be lucky and spot Sammy the Seal, a beloved local resident!

Historic Town Center: Chepstow's 500 year old town centre is brimming with history and character. Its charming streets are lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, unique shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants.

Wye Valley and Forest of Dean: Chepstow is a gateway to the beautiful Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in activities like hiking (on trails including Offa's Dyke Path, Wye Valley Walk or many local walks), cycling (on the off-road Greenway), and exploring the lush landscapes, ancient woodlands, and scenic viewpoints in these areas.

Vauxhall Cottage provides easy walking access to the town centre, riverbank and castle, and is very well located for hopping in the car to explore further afield.

Chepstow is ideal for access to the M4/M48 and M5 motorways, so easily reached from across the country, making it a great venue to bring family and friends from across the UK together for a catch-up. The cottage is located on the "right side" of Chepstow for easy access to the motorway network and trips to Cardiff, Bristol and South Wales and the West - and routes to Monmouth and into the mountains of Wales. Alternatively, Chepstow train station is 10 minutes walk away, and offers direct travel to Cardiff, Gloucester, Cheltenham, and connections to Bristol and London. The bus station also offers a direct bus service to Bristol, and direct National Express links to London, Cardiff and Swansea.

Vauxhall Cottage was our family home for 25 years, until we moved a few miles down the road to the hamlet of Stroat in December 2022. Originally the cottage as it stands now was divided into two or three homes for quarry workers. In our time, we added the large kitchen and ensuite bedroom, and the garden room, and joined two smaller rooms into a large living room. As Vauxhall Cottage has recently been a family home, it offers up-to-date facilities you expect, whilst retaining bags of character.

Guest Reviews:

- "Highly recommend Vauxhall cottage, it is a wonderful homely place to stay with lots of extra touches to make you feel welcome. The location is excellent with all amenities at walking distance. The cottage was great for our dog too as the garden is fully enclosed. Host is very responsive and helpful! We would love to return."

The space
Gaer cottage is surrounded by woodland and nature. It is lovely to be able to walk out of your front door on to private peaceful paths and to explore the countryside. Enjoy birdsong during the day and starry skies at night.

Please note that although the sitting room is spacious, the kitchen is a bit of a squeeze for four people to sit around the table. We've done it and had lots of pleasant evenings and meals sitting around Gaer's kitchen table but it is only fair to point this out - please look at the photographs if you are concerned about this - thank you.

The Old Granary Farm Cottage
Cottage
Monmouthshire

This is a holiday cottage in what used to be a granary on a working farm in the beautiful rolling hills of Abergavenny. Accessed via stone steps facilitated by a handrail, you'll enter the cottage into the hall. There is an open plan lounge come bedroom, separate kitchen and separate bathroom. Free parking is available on the farm yard. Stunning views from the farm, this is a perfect location for numerous countryside walks, some nice local pubs, and a short drive to Abergavenny or Brecon.

The space
Brand new kitchen, with electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge with small freezer drawer, dishwasher, iron and ironing board, kettle and toaster, and bathroom, with toilet, hand basin, and electric shower cubicle, oak flooring, along with original oak beams and sash windows, attached to a Grade 2 listed farmhouse. The lounge is spacious and houses the king sized bed, settee, dining table, wardrobe, and television.
Please note that the property does not have wheelchair access, and due to the nature of the stone steps and the kitchen window opening at floor level, also not suitable for children.

Guest access
Parking is either on the farmyard, which is immediately outside the farmhouse, or up the track a few metres to the cottage, whichever you prefer.

Other things to note
Unfortunately this cottage isn't wheelchair accessible due to the nature of the farm yard, and the steps leading to the front door.

The cottage has benefitted from a completely refurbed downstairs bathroom/living space and an additional upstairs bathroom completed in 2023. With splendid views up to The Skirrid Mountain in front and far reaching farmland views to the rear, it is an ideal base for outdoor lovers and those wanting a quiet break away

Bi fold doors lead to rear ‘dining/sitting/spare bedroom’ area (good quality bed settee or full height very comfortable folding single bed available) with patio doors giving lovely views to the rear.
Please note if the room is used as an extra ‘bedroom’ you will have restricted ‘dining facilities’ available … up to you how you use it!

Door off this room to small rustic freestanding kitchen with microwave, oven, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and all the usual accompaniments. Doorway through to cosy sitting room with wood burner, WiFi, TV. and views up to the Skirrid through the old arched toll house window which (weather permitting) lets in particularly nice evening light.

Door opens from this room immediately up on to very steep (but short) windey’ stairway leading straight in to double bedroom with same lovely views up to the Skirrid (Holy) Mountain. Adjoining ‘en suite’ large airy shower room with far reaching views to the rear … a loo with a view!

Pineapple Cottage - Chepstow Town Centre (Wales)
Cottage
Forest of Dean District

17th Century cottage in the heart of Chepstow, close to Offa's Dyke & the Wye Valley.

Tucked down a little cobbled street in the town centre, it’s a small but perfectly formed cottage ideal for a couple or a young family.

There’s a secret door leading to the second bedroom, where you’ll even get a glimpse of Chepstow Castle from the window.

It’s an ideal base for weddings at St Tewdrics (we’ve even hosted the bride and groom!) or for walking and cycling in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.

The space
Small (and I really do mean small) but perfectly formed, Pineapple Cottage is a characterful little cottage that dates back to 1650 (we think!). It may be old, but it has all the mod-cons to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Downstairs is open plan, with the kitchen at one end, the living space at the other and a dining table with room for four in between.

There's a wood burning stove*, as well as a washer/dryer and dishwasher. If you’re staying in, there’s a smart TV and plenty of games. There is also super fast WiFi and plenty of network points if you have work to do.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, each with drawers and hanging spaces and the beds have Otty Hybrid mattresses. There are plenty of mirrors for getting ready for a night out or wedding and the shower room has a heated floor and a heated mist-free mirror.

You won’t see it in the photos (that would ruin the surprise), but to find the second bedroom you’ll have to check for secret doors!

The garden is small but private. It is heated, lit by fairy lights and has just enough room for four around the table.

Pineapple Cottage is in the town centre of Chepstow, tucked down a little cobbled street. There are plenty of pubs in Chepstow, one of which (The Five Alls) is about 20 meters away and they sometimes host live music on weekends.

The cottage really is small. It’s ideal for couples with one or two small children. There’s room for four adults but it’s cozy!

There are security anchors to lock bikes to in the garden, but they’re not under cover.

The cottage uses energy sourced from renewables thanks to Ovo Energy.

*feel free to use the wood burner, but you'll need to provide your own logs

Guest access
The cottage has a keypad on the front door and guests will have their own code that lasts the duration of their stay.

There is a guide book in the property that has local info and some recommendations for pubs, restaurants and walks.

Joe lives and works in the town so can be on hand to assist with anything, but other than that guests will have unattended access to the cottage.

Other things to note
Whist you can pull up right outside the front door for a few minutes to unload or drop off, there is no dedicated parking at Pineapple Cottage.

There are 3 public car parks, all within 5 minutes walk. They all charge the same within the hours of 08:00 to 18:00 (7 days a week) and are free for motorcycles and disabled badge holders. They all charge around £5 per day.

The closest car parks are Chepstow Castle car park and Welsh Street car park, both of which are about a 3 minute walk. See the map within the images for exact locations.
