(Furniture make over August 2021) Our holiday home is in the heart of Pondoland. As a family we love "On the Rocks". The house sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the beautiful tidal estuary. Spend your days fishing, swimming in the river, chilling on the beach or taking in the spectacular views from our deck! Our cottage is suitable for up to 8 people, please read the description below about the bedrooms.

The space
Totally unique environment. Our house is looked after by Dumbai & Julia who live locally. (We live 1,300kms away). Julia attends to the cleaning and Dumbai will show you around the area, show you the best spots to fish, fetch bait & even teach your kids how to fish or help bait their lines. He also is on hand to fix any issues that may arise with the cottage.
The house water is from rainwater off the roof so you must be water wise! And bring your own drinking water.
There are 3 ensuite facilities (toilet, basin & shower) attached to the 3 bedrooms, all of which open out onto the stoep over looking the estuary. There is one room with a king size bed, one with a queen size bed and another with four single beds.
There is a lounge & dining room over looking the estuary with a TV & DVD player & DSTV dish (you must bring your own DSTV decoder & card). There is a full kitchen & stainless steel braai.
Access to the cottage when raining can be difficult! (Contact me for details).
You also have access to a shared boat house where you can use our kayak and SUP. You can even braai/bbq down by the river.

(Please note use of our Kayak & SUP is at your own risk. We cannot be held liable for any damage or injury to property or persons.)

We will send a maps pin to you before your arrival so you can find the cottage more easily. We can also arrange for Dumbai to meet you on the road to show you the way. A 4x4 vehicle or one with good ground clearance is recommended. The road is not suitable for small cars.

Bookings between December 1st and January 15th & Easter holidays must be a minimum of 5 nights.

Majestic uninterrupted views surround you, magnificent sunrises and sunsets are guaranteed, pristine coastline trails, estuary swims, canoeing, world class fishing, rock pool floating, bird watching and long sunny days await you! 2 families can enjoy our cottage in paradise. This rural village is a community we love - off the beaten track, super safe and exquisitely beautiful.

This is paradise for nature lovers who have an appreciation for less developed, but nature rich, staggeringly beautiful places on planet earth! This is a place to disconnect from the rat race and hamster wheel of life. It’s a place that enables you to slow down and build rich memories with family and friends.

PLEASE NOTE: This part of South Africa is remote, has basic infrastructure and is in the heart of the rural wild coast. This is a destination for those who love to get away from crowded tourist destinations - please don’t expect an urban air bnb with the comforts of urban living. We don’t have wifi, television, a dishwasher or washing machine.

Lindiwe and Nceba are community members who look after the house and will welcome you warmly. Included in the daily rate are Lindiwe and Nceba’s services. Lindiwe will be available to wash dishes, sweep/mop the floors and do small loads of washing. Nceba will also take your holiday crew fishing if that’s one of your loves.

Our cottage is sea facing with sweeping views from the open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room and 2 sea facing bedrooms. We have a 3m wide deck with outdoor chairs perfect for sipping coffee whilst watching the sunrise or drinking a glass of wine at sunset. Dolphins, whales and large flocks of birds are often viewed from our deck. Two large comfy couches set the scene for lazy reading days. Our ten seater dining room table is perfect for board games and leisurely meals.

The kitchen is really well equipped. A gas hob and braai enables cooking and coffee if load-shedding hits! There is plenty of storage space for food. Our double fridge and freezer enables you to stock up with fresh food so you don’t have to drive to port St John’s (45 mins away) too often.

The main bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. Each room has shelving and hooks for clothes.The second room has an additional bunk bed in it just incase there are families with more than two children!

The back room has two bunk beds - where teens or kids can sleep. The second bedroom and bunk bed room have access to a separate bathroom.

We rely on rain water and guests are required to be extremely conscious in water usage. Drinking water can be purchased from Joseph’s spaza shop. We usually buy 10-15 litres of water en-route.

A double canoe is available for exploring the estuary and crossing the river mouth.

If you’re a keen angler - please bring your own rods and ensure you have the relevant licenses.

Guest access
Accessing Umngazana is easier than it used to be! The road is tar and relatively pothole free with the exception of the last 4km which is decent dirt road. The last 100m to the cottage can sometimes be tricky to navigate after rain. Normal 4 door cars often visit Umngazana, but a high clearance car/4x4/ SUV is recommended. There is plenty of parking space for cars and trailers.

You will have exclusive use of the cottage and Nceba, who is isiXhosa but speaks fluent English, will open up for you and ensure you have the keys you need for the duration of your stay.

Other things to note
Should you require large loads of laundry to be washed then there is machine run facility near by where there is a price per load. Water is collected in rain tanks and is to be consumed extremely sparingly. Nceba will assist you with waste management to preserve and conserve the area. Electricity outages can occur - we have ensured there are sufficient solar lights and torches to assist with light when these outages happen.
