- "As advertised but I would emphasize that this is a truly a rustic and historic property. It has a massive charm factor but it is hundreds of years old and has some of the foibles of an old home. Paul, the host was great walking us through these when we checked in and being there if anything minor happened. He also was great with recommendations and was super accommodating to our family. The pool and grounds are truly spectacular and make a sty here more than worth it. It is also a really nice and not over tourististed part of Portugal and was the perfect way to ease my family into our trip while getting adjusted to time zone changes."

Note that is it not close to Evora, so keep that in mind. That said, I don't know that we've ever met a kinder and more welcoming host. Not only did his welcome us to the property, but he gave us a tour of his cork farm and explained the harvesting process -- it was such a personal touch and so fascinating. We just loved it. The owner went above and beyond, helping us make dinner reservations and when I became sick from a sunburn and too much ambition to "see everything," he helped us navigate the best way to get medical help. This is a ground-floor house dating from 1717 (as it can be seen written on the old chimney over the front door).

The house was rebuilt in 2016 but the first structure was preserved, so it looks like a rural typical village house of the nineteenth century, but is equiped with modern commodities, such as, microwaves, TV, WI-FI, linen, dishes, cups , kitchen utilities, etc. We call your attention to the magnificent antique vaults of the rooms.
Our house is situated in the center of the village, near restaurants, supermarket, cafes, cinema, theater, etc.

- "The apartment is spacious, and well decorated in authentic style. Shopping is relatively easy, and kerbside parking in front of the apartment is convenient. The kitchen is modern and quite well equipped and when we needed other items the owner quickly arranged for their delivery. The WiFi is effective and there is a wide range of TV channels in different languages. There is a pleasant little courtyard at the back with a table and chairs, although we had to wipe them clean before they could be used. However, as presently equipped, it is not recommended as a winter let. Being renovated from an old house, and measuring 200 sq metres, we did not expect central heating. However, there was only one old small heater in the apartment, barely able to keep one room warm at a time. The beautifully appointed dining room could not be heated by it at all as it had no electric socket. There was a fireplace in the sitting room but nothing to inform guests as to whether it was a working or decorative fireplace. Nor was any wood or instrument available, such as a fire guard, to indicate it was capable of being used. We therefore did not wish to risk using it. We made several requests to the owner for an additional heater. She appeared to ignore our first one, then she claimed there was another heater. However, after two thorough searches, we could not find them. We were also puzzled why her assistant, who appears to live locally, did not come to the property and show us where it was. The owner then told us that if we had wanted a warm apartment, we could have booked one of her other more expensive air-conditioned properties advertised on the HomeAway website. We thought this a rather irrelevant statement as air conditioning is generally designed to keep a property cool in the heat of summer and not warm in the cold of winter. When our scheduled stay was over, we sent a message to the owner informing her that we had vacated the property and left it in good order. She then replied still claiming there was another heater in the property and that she would allow us to stay an additional one or two nights for free, in view of the trouble this incident had caused us! We had, however, already left to catch our return flight. It is intrinsically a nice apartment but we could not recommend it as a winter let unless the heating arrangements, and advice to guests as to what they are, were to be greatly improved. "

WE PREFER LONG TERM RENTING
This medieval, recently rebuilt house is composed by a hall, 2 bedrooms (with 2 beds each), kitchen, pantry, bathroom, a large living and two yards, an interior yard and another outdoors.
This began to be a Visigotic Castle, from the 8. century, rebuilt several times until Middle Ages. As it stays close to the frontier, it was place of fights between Portuguese and Spanish Kings and/or Lords.

The space
REDONDO is a wonderful and peaceful little town, situated in Alentejo, south of Portugal, near Évora (world heritage city by UNESCO). Redondo has good communication routes to Évora ( 35 Km far away), Vila Viçosa (19 Km), Borba ( 22 Km), Reguengos de Monsaraz ( 30 Km), Elvas ( 48 Km) and Badajoz – Spain ( 60 Km).
This little village is known by the excellent quality of its wines, beautiful handicraft , and also because it enjoys a fantastic mico-climate by means of its proximity of the well-known mountains of Serra d’Ossa. Redondo also has good high –quality social equipments , which are used and animated by the local population reason by which it has become an usually compulsory itinerary of great names of national arts and spectacle, all the year round.
The barrage of Vigia also provides unique conditions to water sports lovers .

At Casa do Forno you will be able to experience the true nature of this region. Alentejo is famous for its olive groves as far as the eye can see, beautiful plains, medieval castles, megalithic ruins, and of course, a rich gastronomy and unique wines. The house is located inside Herdade do Monte Novo (27 hectares), in Aldeia da Serra D’Ossa, more precisely 5min from the city of Redondo. Upon entering the Herdade's gates, you will feel closer to nature than ever before.

The space
It is a typical Alentejo house in shades of ochre and white. Upon entering the house we travel back in time, and we can almost imagine the origins of this house. It was called “Casa do Forno” where bread was baked, mules were kept and there was an outdoor patio where chickens and roosters roamed freely.

Nowadays the house is very different from the times of yore. As soon as we enter, we glimpse a living room where we can see the original oven that is still operational. In the room we also have a salamander to warm us up during the coldest weather. During hotter days, you have air conditioning available to refresh!

At the back of the room, we see a wooden door with wrought iron bars that leads to the first bedroom. This room has two single beds, with the possibility of placing an extra bed on request. The second bedroom is connected to the first bedroom through a door. This room has two single beds. The bathroom is connected to this room. The bathroom has a large walk in shower, sink and white marble decor.

Please note that the house does not have a kitchen, however, there are some home appliances: microwave, Delta Q coffee machine, fridge, kettle, glasses and cups for coffee.

There are a myriad of activities to enjoy on the farm. For the walkers or mountain bikers there are kilometers of footpaths around the 540 hectare farm for you to explore and for those wishing to venture further afield, the nearby peaks offer unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside. Serra d’Ossa lies at 500 metres above sea level and boasting one of the driest climates in Europe. The absence of light pollution makes this an astronomers’ paradise.

Twitchers can enjoy seeking out over 70 species of birds in the unique habitat provided by the cork forest, several of our past guests are members of the RSPB and have made lists of the birds they have seen / heard. Here is a list of a few: White Stork, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Hoopoe, Red-Rumped Swallow, Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Bee Eater. Visitors to the local damn include black winged stilts and the occasional avocet. Very occasionally, bustards can be seen in the lower plains.

Within a one-hour drive from the farm, you can also explore nearby towns including Evora (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Estremoz famed for its Saturday morning market, Vila Viçosa with its two royal palaces, Reguengos and even neighbouring Spain. Historical tours of Evora can also be arranged through a private guide.

Vineyards : While predominantly a hilly cork forest , a vineyard has recently been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nactional and Syrah quality grapes. Most of the grapes are sold; however a selection of the best quality grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the Het Tientje name. This wine has been awarded silver medals in Wine Masters Challenge (Portugal), Mundus Vini (Germany), and Challenge Du Vin (France). Next year a white wine will also be produced from viognier grapes.
