The bungalow was well equipped for making small meals although no oven to bake. We had some trouble with insects (centipedes) but think that they came inside due to bad weather. Auberge de la Croix du Pape on the great driving road Route de la Grande Corniche between Nice and Monaco has stunning views of the mediaeval village of Eze and The Med. It takes its name from a cross outside commemorating Pope Pius VII staying at the auberge 200 years ago. The Pope came this route to crown Napoleon Bonaparte the Emperor of France and to marry him to his Austrian bride ( no, not Josephine).

Auberge de la Croix du Pape is a former olive mill named after a cross here to mark a Pope Pius VII's visit in 1814. The original Olive Mill Grindstone and presses date back to well beyond his visit. The Olive Mill was an important local building with olive growers bringing their produce to be processed.

You can enjoy the spectacular views from the large paved terrace and shaded garden with the view of Eze Village and the Mediterranean. We have a barbecue on the terrace you are welcome to use and if you want to make a salad or do some jacket potatoes to go with it I can supply you with what you need.

Guest access
Some areas are being renovated so please understand that its a work in progress and you get to see that evolution. I don't want to restrict guests from the business end of the work where we have storage and equipment to do our work next to a parking area you can use. Under our terrace there is a casual lounge opening on to the terrace to relax out of the sun or inclement weather. It's not all finished but 99% of guests enjoy our place.

During your stay
I'm very happy to share with guests any tips on places to see and tips on hidden gems you get from local knowledge. The Auberge was a working olive oil mill at the time of Pope Pius VII's visit. Our cool Olive Room still houses the huge grindstone in a pit to mash the olives and huge wooden corkscrew presses to squeeze the last oil from the fruit. We are at a loss to explain how the grindstone was driven but we believe two "tank rooms" of water were used to pump water up the hill to drive a water wheel when the topography of the land was quite different. We have photographs from former owners of the Auberge in the early 1900s showing their family and construction of the upper building on the ruins of the olive mill. The temperature at the Auberge.., 500 metres above the sea is a few degrees cooler than Nice, especially in the afternoon and early evening when the sun goes rounds the corner of our hill and gives you some relief from a hot day perhaps at the beach ... or just enjoying our sunny terrace or shaded garden to read and sunbake.

We can give you tips on our favourite special places you might otherwise not have heard of. I will always try to help guests with any transportation difficulties if they are arriving by public transport.

The Olive Suite is a large space adjacent to the Olive Room. It has been used for a small dinner party for 20 people. It is the former Olive Mill and houses the original grindstone and Olive presses.

It is closed for refurbishment but ring the BELL at the door entrance upstairs to get our attention. The rooms are all on the lower level, accessed from the parking area down the ramp to the left next to letterbox 3100.

Pope Pius VII had been locked up in Chateau de Fontainebleau south-east of Paris to force him to sign a new Concordat, annul Napoleon’s excommunication and have his marriage to Josephine officially recognised. Napoleon released the Pope on January 23, 1814, stopping at the former Olive mill that became known as Auberge de la Croix du Pape. He then continued the journey to make his triumphant return to Rome on May 24, 1814.

We have a barbecue on the terrace you are welcome to use and if you want to make a salad or do some jacket potatoes to go with it I can supply you with what you need.


GUEST ACCESS:

ECLECTIC & ECCENTRIC: I like to collect found objects, and make and create things. I make stained glass and we do the renovations ourselves... so it has taken just 18 years so far. So I hope you will get a feeling of an artistique sensibility. Some areas are being renovated ... so please understand that its a work in progress and you get to see that evolution.

I don't want to restrict guests from the business end of the work where we have storage and equipment to do our relocation work next to a parking area you can use.
I am constantly improving the gardens and like to talk about it ... I am pleased with how it is coming along during the Low Season. The neighbours are putting the finishing touches to a fabulous new home near our parking entrance. Building is banned in the area in August, by the way.

LOCATION: The auberge is 500 metres above sea level and it is a relief in summer to have temperatures a few degrees cooler than the coast. And in the afternoon the sun that has bathed the terraces all morning goes around the corner of the hill, the terrace is in shadow. Under our terrace there is a casual lounge opening on to the terrace to relax out of the sun or inclement weather. It's not all finished but 99% of guests enjoy our place.

WEATHER: If you arrive in bad weather, you might not get the best first impression. The fog may occasionally surround the auberge or just swirl around the village of Eze below, but once it passes that great view returns. So let the tempest pass.

ROOM LAYOUT: The rooms are like Motel entrances, all private and separate which is a big attraction for guests wanting some privacy. Your rooms are not down the end of some sterile hallway.
A couple are connected ...the large Olive Suite and the Thyme room ...so check out the plans of the auberge room layout. They open on to that great view except the Olive Suite which is a Cave and has little natural light. But it has good variable lighting for the ambiance you want.

Guest access
The room has its own access from a side garden so you are free to come and go... Guests can enjoy the terrace and the garden with its great view of Eze and the Mediterranean. Some areas are being renovated so please understand that its a work in progress and you get to see that evolution. During your stay
I'm very excited to share with guests any tips on places to see and tips on hidden gems you get from local knowledge. The Auberge was a working olive oil mill at the time of Pope Pius VII's visit. Our cool Olive Room still houses the huge grindstone in a pit to mash the olives and huge wooden corkscrew presses to squeeze the last oil from the fruit. We are at a loss to explain how the grindstone was driven but we believe two "tank rooms" of water were used to pump water up the hill to drive a water wheel when the topography of the land was quite different. We have photographs from former owners of the Auberge in the early 1900s showing their family and construction of the upper building on the ruins of the olive mill. The temperature at the Auberge.., 500 metres above the sea is a few degrees cooler than Nice, especially in the afternoon and early evening when the sun goes rounds the corner of our hill and gives you some relief from a hot day perhaps at the beach ... or just enjoying our sunny terrace or shaded garden to read and sunbake.

THE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE... GETTING AROUND AND TOURIST TIPS

It's useful to have local knowledge. We can give you tips on our favourite special places you might otherwise not have heard of including the "Secret Beach" as I call it. Check out Fort de la Revere, Villefranche Sur Mer and the exotic garden of Eze.

Croix du Pape is situated on the great driving road Route de la Grand Corniche, so it is ideal if you have a car to get around. It takes about 15 minutes to get down to Nice and 20 minutes from Monaco. Italy isn't that far away either for day trips... such as the market in Ventimiglia on a Friday or San Remo on Saturday.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Plenty of cyclists train along the route. Including a champion in his distinctive sunglasses. There are Lignes d'Azur buses 82 and 83 which pass nearby and terminate at Plateau de la Justice near the Hermitage Hotel.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The 82 bus travels west down to Nice via Eze on the Moyenne Corniche... and the 83 travels east through Eze towards Monaco and Beaullieu.
You can then take the 100 bus which runs along the coast on the Basse Corniche. between Monaco, Cap d'Ail, Eze Bord de Mer, Beaullieu and Villefranche to Nice.

The destination on the front of the 82 & 83 buses that come near the auberge called is Plateau de la Justice . The terminus is right next to Hotel Hermitage and you can get out at the top of the hill before it turns left and take the 200 metre walk to the the right for Auberge de la Croix du Pape.

You might prefer to take the coastal train which stops right above Villefranche's "sandy" beach.... it's more like fine smooth gravel. Villefranche is one of our favourite spots on the Côte d'Azur. And it doesn't take long to drive there from Croix du Pape.

Auberge de la Croix du Pape is a former olive mill named after a cross here to mark a Pope Pius VII's visit in 1814. Rooms are listed separately but can be booked collectively. Enjoy a large terrace and great views. Some areas are still being renovated, but that should not detract from enjoyment of a great location. Breakfast 7€, pls order in advance.

The space
Olive Mill Suite
The Olive Suite can be rented with the Olive Room with its share twin beds ... ideal for a family. The main Olive Mill room does not have windows and natural light, but is well lit with about 30 downlights! Or use subtle lamp and secondary lighting. I have added a small shower room and toilet.
The adjoining Olive Room, which provides your private entrance to the Mill area from the garden, does have a French Door and a window in the ensuite.
There are two single beds in the Olive Room (it has a larger ensuite) and the main Olive Mill area has a King size bed 190cm wide, a sofa and a long bench seat which can become a single bed. It has a table for four ... or more if you need it. It features a simple kitchen area - a self catering space with simple amenities of an induction hot plate and a microwave and bar fridge. A small ensuite with shower has been added ... great for friends travelling together or a family needing more space.
The room is large enough for a family or friends to share by adding a second double bed or single bed instead of the sofa or table if you want your own space with dormitory sleeping arrangements.
The huge 190cm wide bed is great for taller people like me, who have enjoyed this space in the past.
It is the area where olive oil was processed and features the large olive grindstone (with seating around it) and the olive presses. They're like huge objet d'art.

Auberge de la Croix du Pape on the great driving road Route de la Grande Corniche between Nice and Monaco has stunning views of the mediaeval village of Eze and The Med. It takes its name from a cross outside commemorating Pope Pius VII staying at the auberge 200 years ago. The Pope came this route to crown Napoleon Bonaparte the Emperor of France and to marry him to his Austrian bride ( no, not Josephine).

Auberge de la Croix du Pape is a former olive mill named after a cross here to mark a Pope Pius VII's visit in 1814. The original Olive Mill Grindstone and presses date back to well beyond his visit. The Olive Mill was an important local building with olive growers bringing their produce to be processed.
