Castle of Amantea. On March 27th the birth of Saint Francis is celebrated, while on April 2nd (canonical feast of the Saint of Paola) death is celebrated. The solemn celebrations in honor of San Francesco di Paola are held from 1 to 4 May, with several processions on land and sea of the "bust" of the Saint and the cloak. Tradition has it that a boatman refused to ferry San Francesco from the Calabrian coast to Messina and the Saint crossed the strait with his own cloak. San Francesco was proclaimed not only patron of Calabria but also patron of seafarers.
