THE SPACE
Sky Mountain is found at the end of a one lane road that meanders through the older original part of Pine Flat village. The last quarter mile is a dirt road that ends at the house. The house is secluded and private with no neighboring homes within sight.
The house is divided into two wings. Between the two wings there is an indoor spa/hot pool and a larger cool pool. The pools are not completely automated and require some manual operation. The south wing or main part of the house has a master bedroom and a guest room, each with an ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The guest room has a queen size bed. The north wing of the house has a room with accommodations for four consisting of two sets of bunk beds. Each bunk bed is a twin size bed. There is also a sofa with pull out double size hide-a-bed. It is not as comfortable as a standard double bed but does offer an extra sleeping accommodation if needed. There is an adjacent full bathroom and also a laundry room.
I list the house with overnight accommodations for 8. In a pinch it could accommodate a couple of extra guests. The pull out couch in the bunkbed room is a double so that room can accommodate 6. We ask that the total number or guests staying at the house be limited to 10.
The house is older but well built and well insulated. The south or main wing is heated and cooled via thermostatically controlled central heating and air conditioning. It also has an air tight wood stove. The wood stove in the main wing of the house has a catalytic converter and thermostatically controlled blower. There are do's and don'ts for proper stove operation. Please refer to the wood stove instructions in the house manual if you want to have a fire in it.
The bunkbed room (north wing) has a heat pump which will both heat and cool. The north wing also has a wall heater and a wood stove.
There is a VOIP telephone and internet service with Wi-Fi but no broadcast TV service or cell phone service. If you have WiFi enabled calling on your phone you can use your cell phone to make and receive calls if you are in or next to the house. A 4K flat panel TV is available if you want to stream movies via the internet. The TV has an Amazon Fire Stick for accessing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other content providers. The internet service is a highspeed Starlink satellite system installed in January, 2022. Data speeds are 100-200 Mbps with low latency and no data caps. (Versus 3-25 Mbps, high latency, and data caps with the old system.) The new system is good for streaming HD movies, video conferencing, and work from distance.
If you want to use the pools you must be willing to check the water level and add water if necessary, add chlorine if needed, and turn on the pump motors and pool heater. It is all done with valves and switches so it is not difficult but does require following the instructions and remembering to do certain things. I will send you detailed instructions and am happy to answer questions by phone if you need guidance.
Sky Mountain is located on the western slope of the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains at an elevation of 3,750 feet. It is within the boundaries of Giant Sequoia National Monument. To the west and about 10 minutes away is the resort of California Hot Springs. A couple miles to the east by way the crow flies is the southernmost grove of Giant Sequoia redwood trees. About 30 minutes to the northeast is the Trail of 100 Giants and more giant redwood groves. Farther to the north are Mineral King, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park.
GUEST ACCESS
The house is self check-in. There is a combination lock on the gate and a key pad entry on the front door. I will provide the codes for both after you have completed your reservation.
With the exception of the shop building and an owners storage closet in the pool equipment room you have entire use of the house and property. There is a second refrigerator in the garage that you can plug in if you have extra items you need to keep cold. Use of the two 4 wheel drive vehicles in the garage is not included.
If you have a horse or ATV or just hiking shoes you are welcome to roam around and explore the property. If hiking it is best to have boots or high top shoes when walking through the grass in summer and fall. The grass has little burrs that love to get stuck in you socks and are difficult to remove.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Not to alarm but you should be aware, it is a country house and mother nature’s little critters sometimes appear. Various bugs and lizards are not uncommon. We have not had any mice in years but I do keep a few mouse traps in the house in case one should get in. Ant spray is kept under the kitchen sink. I have not seen a rattle snake in over 3 years but they are a possibility in the summer and fall when the weather is warm.
Please make a habit of closing the door when you enter and exit the house. It is a lot easier to keep little critters out as opposed to catching them once they get in.
Food or garbage must not be left out. especially overnight as animals and insects mistakenly think dinner has been provided for their benefit. Bagged garbage can be stored in the garage when the kitchen garbage can becomes full. There is no community garbage pick up service. I have been able to hire a local person to remove garbage after your departure.
There are black bears and mountain lions in the surrounding mountains. A sighting happens occasionally but it is very rare for either animal to venture near Pine Flat. You may see deer. Just after sunrise and before sunset they will meander through the meadow to get a drink of water from Capinero Creek.
Hunting is not allowed. While the area around the house is private and no other neighbors can be seen we do have neighbors through the trees on the other side of Capinero Creek. As a courtesy to the neighbors we request that guests refrain from shooting guns.
Note: The area is a wildfire high risk area. If you are staying at the house during fire season (summer and fall) campfires are not allowed.
- "Great family spot, plenty of room for all guests, lots of privacy, nice outside space. Hiking, wildlife and wading spots. A good book on the cool mornings" - "Beautiful location is a tiny friendly town, highly recommend" - "perfect house for family vacation with friends" - "A wonderfully large property with all of the things that you need! The house was perfect! Not modernized, but with modern amenities, such as a nest thermostat and an TV with Netflix, Prime, etc. I cooked every day in the kitchen and everything I needed was there. The little pool house was so fun for our family! Wish we had another family so we could have used the other side of the house.. its a perfect kid space with bunk beds! We saw deer each morning at dawn. Our dogs ran for miles and miles up and down the hills exploring the terrain. It was such a welcome break from the city. 35 mins from Trail of 100 Giants, which was one of those life changing experiences, and such a treat for our son. Nature at it’s finest. Will definitely stay here again! Maybe in the winter! Oh, 30 miles to the nearest gas station and an hour for medical attention, so be prepared when you travel."

Amazing views from the cabin windows. Everything stocked up and organized to make our stay nice and comfortable. - "I usually travel with my best friend for my birthday weekend this year I wanted to make it a family trip to make memories with the grandbabies. This was a perfect place to do this. It is located at the top of the mountain so the view is amazing. Their is a game room that the grandbabies and all of us loved. Sunsets are amazing and the people around are so friendly. This I would say was the best trip and I'm excited to do it agian and we plan on booking this same cabin. Absolutely love this place"

- "Everything was great! We had a big group of ppl coming to Cabin G. Plenty of room for sleeping comfortably. Good selection of movies(dvds). Be ware won't be able to stream data. Soo human interaction is a must. If you are looking to get back in touch with your family and friends, bring some family/friend games. This is place definitely a must! Great stuff to do during snowing winter! Down hill the ski mountain offers great fun! Bring equipment to slide, also trust me, 4x4 vehicle is a must if you want to park next to your cabin otherwise you will have to stay downhill and hike 100yrds up and down. The hosts are awesome! Friendly with great communication! I will definitely go back in summer with a smaller group."

- "We took a last minute trip to the snow, and had never been to this area. Jim and Karen answered all of my questions (I had a lot) and they couldn’t have been nicer. They welcomed us by having a nice roaring fire going in the cabin. We had planned on going to Alta Sierra, and the tube park was closed. Turns out, there was no need to go at all. There is a small hill right next to the house, and a larger hill just down the road. We will probably take chains for the cars next time, just to be safe."

- "Stayed here during the Memorial Day weekend to unplug from the big city (we drove from the Long Beach area) and it took 3.5 hours. Charming little cottage right by a small creek. My children ages 4 and 7 adored finding small creatures and playing in the yard. We had a “picnic” outside each dinner time. Since it’s so close to the 100 Giants trailhead, we managed to get there early before the holiday rush and leave before craziness ensued. My husband enjoys fishing and Kern Lake is also close by. The house was extremely charming, mid century cottage themed, with all the creature comforts. It had everything I needed to cook all my family’s meals. Joanie the host is quickly available via messages. I hope to visit soon again!"

Escape to the forest and enjoy beautiful, spacious secluded 3-bedroom 2 bath mountain log guest home on our 54-ac. horse ranch. At 4900' elevation in the Sequoia National Forest & Monument. Note this is not Seqouia National Park, which is 2 hours away.
The home sleeps 5-6 guests MAX. (1 queen bed, 1 full size bed, 2 twin beds). Front porch & back deck with views of mountains, forest, wildlife, horses & stars! 2 bathrooms including a Jacuzzi bathtub. The house is fully equipped with dishware, cookware, kitchen appliances including a Keurig and drip coffee pot, washer, dryer, heating, A/C, fireplace, WIFI and TV. This fantastic house is perfect for a family getaway.
This is not a party place, and no loud or unruly activities will be allowed. We live nearby and we will cancel your stay, and you will leave if you violate house rules or engage in any activity that could cause disturbance, damage or hazards.
Relax in the gorgeous living space after a day of exploring. Posey is actually just a Post Office serving a rural area in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of Tulare County. The closest town is the small town of Glennville 11 miles from rental. Glennville is a small ranch town with 3 cafes, 2 with bars and 2 small grocery stores. No gas or charging stations so do not leave the last full-service town without filling up.
if you want to get away from it all. You have 54 acres of ranch, open space and forest around you, instead of being in a subdivision surrounded by other cabins and people. The rental house was our parents' home on our horse ranch. We live on the ranch about a ¼ mile apart from the rental. Our ranch and the surrounding Sequoia National Forest are a relaxed place to get away from crowds and in tune with nature on the trails on the ranch and the surrounding National Forest. Relax and enjoy the great views, watching wildlife and the horses or stargaze from the from the large front porch or the back deck. If you have not seen the night sky away from the city, you will be amazed. All summer & winter mountain sports can be enjoyed. Hiking, horse riding on ranch & surrounding Forest Service Trails. Dirt bikes and E-bikes on designated Forest Service trails only. Then again you may just want to cozy up to the fireplace with a book.
We provide an information book on area sites and activities. There is a small stream, Poso Creek, you can explore on National Forest public land very close to the ranch with a road and trails from the ranch to it. Fish in the Poso creek are small natives that take skill to catch. There are other streams in the area you can fish, the ones that are planted with fish are about 45 minutes away or the Kern River an hour away. There are forest service trails and roads in the area. There are two historic lookouts about 30 minutes away and Giant Seqouia groves such as those along the Trail of 100 Giants about 40 miles or 1 hour away.
In the spring and summer white water rafting can be booked in Kernville on the Kern River about 36 miles (1 hour) away along with boating and fishing in lake Isabella.
In winter, if there is enough snow, you can x-country ski, snow mobile, snowshoe. While we do not get snow real often, we do get snow several times between Oct and May. Sometimes about 3 feet. You must be prepared to use 4x4 or chains in winter as snows can happen suddenly. The roads are not plowed at night and only once about midday. When there is over a foot 4X4 and chains are needed if you need to leave before they plow. So, check weather often. The driveway is up hill to leave so if it snows you usually need to park at the top by the county road. The closest downhill ski area is Shirley Meadows, about 30 minutes away, but they do not have enough snow to be open all winter. The closest ski area opened most of the winter is China Pk. about 2 hours away.
Pets or horses maybe ok with addition fees, but you must contact us for permission. Panel corral available. Well behaved dogs, in other words: house broke, they do not jump up on walls and windows sills when they see something strange or want to chase horses and wildlife. You are responsible for any cleanup or damage and if you rent that means you agree to pay for any costs related to pets. But be advised that dogs must be controlled at all times. We hate to see any pet injured so for their safety you need to know that running lose can cause them to by injured or worse by wild animals that attack dogs and by ranchers. CA Law says a rancher may shoot a dog that chases or harasses livestock. There is lots of livestock in the area.
Horseback riding lesson and rides may be available depending on availability of our horses, our personnel and the weather. You must contact us in advance so we can check availability and plan. Two riders at a time maximum and requires a signed HHA, proper attire. All rides start by riding in round pin then progress depending on ability. Cost $50 ph. each 2-hour minimum.
- "Loved our stay at this comfortable very clean country home. The views are wonderful. So quiet and close enough to trail of 100 giants and a day trip to sequioa national Park but far enough to not have any noisy neighbors. Start gazing was incredible and owners were very friendly and accommodating. A very relaxing and a wonderful stay during a long 4th of July weekend we look forward to another get away. "

- "It's a beautiful place and our host was very helpful. We had a great family time playing cards and games and hiking. The snowy forest was beautiful. Jim's recommendation to have chains or four-wheel drive is important. The road is paved up until the last quarter mile or so, but that last bit would have been impossible without chains. It was a wonderful weekend get-away for the whole family."

Put some space between yourself and the rest of the world in this fully solar-powered cabin on it's own private road that backs into the sequoia national forest. All the primitive privacy you crave outside, while inside you can still enjoy fully-appointed kitchen, unlimited internet, 75" 4k TV, and even an oversized claw-foot tub with a gorgeous view.
Wake and take your breakfast overlooking the serene meadows as horses graze, then enjoy quiet hikes, giant trees... and the rest is up to you!
The cabin sits on a private road, so there may be one or two cars per day that pass your way (usually a lone UPS truck or a neighbor up the hill).
The closest neighbors to you are hundreds of yards away across a vast meadow. Our sparsely-populated neighborhood is a quiet, friendly, and beautiful home to a small community with one general store/part-time restaurant (Seven Oaks Market, see the guidebook for more details).
While you can stay secluded without interacting with anyone, you can also take a refreshing sunset walk along serene roads flanked by modest mountain cabins tucked in between pines and oaks. A neighbor may give you a wave hello, and horses will nod as they graze, but you're likely to be completely uninterrupted.
Quiet takes on a whole new meaning when you're here. As the night begins, the chorus of cicadas and crickets eventually gives way to a stunning silence. You almost dare not whisper as you wouldn't want to disrupt the gentle rustling of leaves. If you're an early riser, you'll be treated to the greetings of bird families slowly welcoming the sunrise.
If you want to engage locally, the Sequioa National Forest has hiking trails within a few miles, and the famed Trail of 100 Giants sequoia grove is only about 40 minutes away (check for possible road closings during winter).
The cabin itself backs up to the Sequoia National Forest, and you are invited to walk out the back door and literally step into the pristine hills where you can encounter all manner of natural flora and fauna. Do be aware, though, that this is authentic wilderness, so you could encounter wildlife such as deer, foxes, feral cows or pigs (no kidding), and even black bears and rattlesnakes.
By the way, we even provide a couple of hiking poles along with "ankle gators" that you can strap to your shins when hiking. They protect against brambles, etc. and are even rated for deflecting a rattlesnake strike.
Unless you want to stroll the beautiful neighborhood or hike out the back to the Sequoia National Forest, you'll need a car to go anywhere. The closest gathering place is 2 miles away at the general store/part-time restaurant (Seven Oaks Market, see the guidebook for more details).
If you want to engage further, the quaint California Hot Springs Spa is just 4 miles away (currently under renovation), with several hiking trails along the route. And the famed Trail of 100 Giants sequoia grove is about 40 minutes away (check for possible road closings during winter).
Please understand that the cabin is located in the Sequoia National Forest, and part of the beauty of being so remote is enjoying the natural environment. This includes occasionally seeing wildlife from a distance or even possibly up close. You may encounter birds, squirrels, insects, deer, rabbits, spiders, foxes, bats, bears, snakes, horses, dogs, cats, cows, and any number of other creatures. These animals may be feral as we live in their habitat, so please act accordingly. There may even be an occasional mouse, insect, bird, bat, or other that finds its way into the cabin. Please keep doors shut and or screens in place to minimize this occasion. Thank you.

-Absolutely NO CAR CHARGING permitted
-Absolutely NO ELECTRIC HEATERS or any other outside heaters/coolers/AC units of any type permitted
-Due to high fire risk, absolutely NO outdoor fires, grills, fireworks, sparklers, or open flame of any type.

- "More attention to detail than any other cabin we've rented. Super cozy, large plot of land, large pond with croaking frogs, much privacy. Rustic yet modern. The online listing description of the cabin is accurate, but it doesn't fully describe how great the place is. Lots of things can be said about it, but it is the complete package that is hard to put into words but has such a wonderful vibe. We highly recommend this cabin and these hosts."
