** Please check the location to be sure there's not a ferry crossing between the cottage and the rest of your plans. The location is in Toward, near Dunoon, on the Cowal Peninsula. It sometimes shows as Isle of Bute in searches as it's so close, but it is across the water! **
Bihar is an exeptionally bright cottage set in mature gardens running down to its own pink rocky beach on the Firth of Clyde.
It's impossible not to relax with the ever changing stunning view of the tidal waters, the passing Bute ferries, military ships, submarines and summer cruise ships. Many hours can be passed watching the magically calming view.
Entered via the long gravel drive with easy parking for multiple vehicles, Bihar is a charming cottage of maybe 100 years, operating as a holiday cottage for most of these years.
The entrance hall leads on to a ground floor twin bedroom and small double bedroom, both with views across the water, served by the ground floor family bathroom.
There is a large open plan living and dining room with windows to 3 sides and magnificent views across the water to Wemyss bay. In addition to the central heating, there is a wonderful log burner that can really belt out the heat on a winter evening spent slouching on the huge tartan sofa, or playing the tuned Yamaha U1 piano.
The well equipped kitchen includes a dishwasher, electric hob, electric fan oven and fridge freezer.
A small laundry room off the kitchen offers a further sink, plus washing machine and tumble drier.
Upstairs is a large bedroom with the best views in the house, a king sized bed and a small en suite shower and WC. There would be plenty of room for a couple of camp beds or similar in this room. Just ask and we can arrange.
Being further down the peninsula from Dunoon, Toward is on flatter ground and on a sunny day (it's often sunnier than the forecast!) offers sunshine all day long and into the evening. The midgies are less fond of Toward too as there are fewer trees and a slight breeze keeps them more under control than in many parts of the West coast.
Despite it's remote location, Bihar can be reached by public transport with the 489 bus meeting the Dunoon CalMac passenger ferry (see West Coast Motors Timetable) many times per day. The bus will stop where you ask the driver to, so you can get door to door service.
The water side garden has two hanging egg chairs to while away the hours, plus several ordinary chairs a couple of recliners and 2 tables. There is also a chiminea and coal BBQ.
There's no shop, pub, supermarket, nightclub or helipad in Toward itself, but 2 miles up the road in Innellan are 2 good pub/restaurants and a Post Office shop. Another 5 miles further up the road to Dunoon where there are pubs, restaurants, supermarkets and a cute cinema.
It's a great place to relax.

- "We stayed in Ash Lodge for a short break in July, with our little dog. The site is tucked away and although there are other lodges around, it's not like the bigger places where they can all feel on top of each other. The chalet was spotlessly clean, with a well equipped kitchen, good shower and very comfy bed. Nice private garden area and veranda which isn't overlooked...except by the wide variety of birds visiting the feeders! The road is nearby but not too busy and is well screened by trees - you don't hear any noise inside. The decor may be a little dated but it's perfectly comfortable and well situated for exploring the area. Two minute walk to the Whistlefield Inn, which has a lovely bar and great food. Booking was easy and arrival instructions clear. Overall, a little gem which offers great value."

- "Cottage was clean and very comfortable. Spent the weekend there with my family . Very spacious with nice grounds overlooking the sea." - "Lovely house, well equipped and beautifuly clean, with a beautiful garden and absolutely fabulous views. Sadly because of the Covid rules the local pub wasn't doing food during our stay but it was still a great place to have a drink and less than half a mile away, although closed on Mondays. The scenery in the area is fantastic. The beach opposite the house is very rocky so not really suitable for exercising the dog, which was a shame, but he loved the stream in the garden. - "This is a nice little bungalow with grounds in the woods. It's isolated from other properties and far enough from the road so as to not hear anything, could hardly hear the visiting cockerel near the duck pond. There are numerous attractions close by or you can use the cottage as a base to explore further. As others have commented, the fridge is a little small and the duvets are a little hot but that's no biggie. There is a garage with shop next to a diner a couple of miles towards Dunoon with many shops and attractions in Dunoon itself. EV charging is available in Dunoon - it's worth getting a RFID card from chargeplace Scotland to use this and other chargers in rural locations"

The lodge is really popular with those who enjoy being close to nature in all its glory. With open outlook to the front and forest backdrop there is a lovely cosy feeling which many remark upon. The lodge is full carpeted and has little touches of luxury to make a stay most enjoyable.
There is such a sense of peace waking up to the sound of the birds, and occasionally guests catch a glimpse of the Red Squirrels and Red Deer that come to the site. Perhaps begin your day with a brisk walk along the famous Pucks Glen trail to view the waterfalls, or take a gentle stroll along the traffic-free road to the Botanical Gardens and Cafe at Benmore.
As Electricity, Bedding, Towels, Wi-fi, Catch-up TV and Parking are INCLUDED you can really relax knowing that all your comforts are taken care of, with no nasty electricity bill on your departure.
Direct and HomeAway Guests also receive a COMPLEMENTARY WELCOME PACK on arrival.
A wee note from your hosts:
We must advise that pets are not accepted at this lodge. We appreciate this must be disappointing for pet-owners (like ourselves), but many guests suffer from allergies and the pets themselves can be rather rough on carpets and furniture, so we believe this is best for all.
Your Hosts have 3 more lodges and 1 lodging in the area. 'Fraochan', identical in almost every way to Calltainn, is nearby, whilst Bramble and Hawthorn Lodges, and The Wee Ludging, each sleeping 2, are located off-site by the River Eachaig.
- "The lodge was very clean when we arrived and had a welcome pack to help us. The accommodation was excellent and the beds were very comfortable! Would definitely stay here again." - "The Cabin was as described, it was just so perfect. It was clean and everything in it's place, home from home. Great for walks and exploring the area, we loved the walks and scenery. The owner should be very proud of their Cabin, It is in an area the can suit people with a bit of adventure. Fresh air, calm surrounding, Fantastic We have recommended the property to family members as they have children who like adventure, something for everyone to enjoy on a nice break away. We went into Dunoon for old times sake as it was a place we haven't been in over 50 years. As I am writing this review, I am just abut to make our second booking. We loved the Cabin, and looking forward to our second return. Thank you for a lovely break, and I hope many more!"

- "This is a great place to stay. We came in Feb, so there are a few things still closed. The house is lovely and clean, the doorways are wide and suitable for big wheel chairs, but the bathrooms are strictly wheelchair friendly, there were no grab rails in the ensuite bathroom. The grass on the 4 sides of the house is mostly moss and is very wet and boggy. The kitchen is not very well stocked. There were no good knives, there was only a small chopping board, there is a vent in the floor in front of the cooker that constantly blows cold air, and the dishwasher needed salt. The rooms are comfortable, but the bed in the Main bedroom is too soft and too small. The lounges and comfortable and large. The room with the fire gets very warm if you get the fire just right. And the logs provided are a nice feature. The internet is mostly OK, but it gets sketchy about 9pmThere are some really good walks close by. Pucks Glen is a wonderful climb, it will be much better when the current tree fall is cleared up.This makes some of the routes tough and others impassable.Dunoon is a nice town, but not a great deal to do. Go and visit Lorne(pub), the food is great. Invarary is a quaint little town. Fairly close by.If you come from the south to get here you may cross the Clyde using the ferry at Greenock, this is expensive, but will save another 2 hours in the car.Would we go back? Yes, most probably."
