Just a stone's throw from Custer State Park! Three guest cabins, plus two suites in the lodge, are located on 6 beautiful, serene acres in Custer County, SD.

The Calamity Jane cabin is an authentic, historic log home with the original wood floor, main door, and historic rock fireplace. (Due to its historical nature the fireplace is non-functioning.) The cabin got its name because Calamity Jane herself spent an evening in the cabin while traveling through the hills back in the day.

The Calamity Jane is an open floor plan which sleeps 3 people. It has a king size bed and a twin bed. A kitchenette and small bath were added to the original cabin. (The old outhouse still stands nearby; we use it as a gardening shed.) The kitchenette includes a sink, microwave, mini fridge, toaster, drip coffeemaker, and an induction hot plate. We stock the kitchenette with pots, pans, basic cooking and eating utensils. We include dishes, drinking glasses, basic spices, and a limited amount of coffee and filters. A small bath with a walk in shower and toilet. There is also a kitchen table with two chairs, as well as a dining table with four chairs near the fireplace. There is a 32" Roku TV in the main cabin. We use Starlink satellite internet for our Wifi. Outside there is an all cedar deck with a small table, 2 chairs, and BBQ grill for outdoor enjoyment.

There is a 3 day minimum to rent the Calamity Jane.

McDonald Mountain Ranch is in a very convenient location. Center Lake is nearby, which is a swimming/fishing lake with picnic tables, barbeque grills, showers and restrooms; located 2 miles away from the ranch. The Black Hills Historic Playhouse is also within a few miles. The beautiful Iron Mountain Hiking Trail is right around the corner. The Wolf Camp outdoor restaurant which serves barbeque ribs, burgers, pizza, etc is 1/2 mile away. The entrance to Custer State Park is also right around the corner.

Unfortunately due to many considerations and despite the fact that we are huge animal lovers, we do not allow pets in our cabins. If a guest arrives for their reservation with an animal they will NOT be given a rental key NOR issued a refund.

We do not have guest laundry facilities. There are laundromats in Keystone and Hill City.

Check in is at 4:00pm MST. Check out is by 11:00am MST.

The Carriage House is a One Bedroom, two level, two Bath, 800 square-foot cabin with over 300 square-feet of deck on both levels. The Carriage House was designed by the McDonald family in the "mountain log lodge vernacular". (Please note both bathrooms are located on the 2nd floor, upstairs.) The first floor has a full kitchen, dining area, and a convertible living room that includes a high end queen sized sofa sleeper. We also have two twin size roll away beds available upon request. These two roll-away beds can be added to the lower or upper levels. The second floor has a full bathroom which includes a shower / tub combo, located at the top of the stairs. The second floor also includes the master bedroom, with a separate full bath with a shower, two sink vanity area, and water closet. The master has a queen bed with high end bedding. There is an entrance from the master suite out to a beautiful wrap around redwood deck which has chairs and a spectacular view of the mountains and meadows.

We feel that the elevated wrap around porch is one of the best things about the Carriage House. There is a large oak tree that the deck was built around bringing the nature of the hills close as you sit and enjoy the views from every angle. From its elevated decks, you have scenic views of mountain meadows and rolling wooded hills full of the famed dark ponderosa pine trees. Our meadows, although variable with the season, are rich in color and usually have an abundance of wildlife including deer, turkey, squirrels, etc. With just a short walk, Mt. Rushmore is visible through the trees!

The Carriage House provides a Washer/Dryer, as well as fully stocked cooking facilities. We have access to free Wi-Fi, a 32" Roku TV, air conditioning, heating, outdoor dining facilities with a propane grill. (We supply the propane.) Cell service can be unreliable at the ranch and all through the Black Hills. However, we have recently, (Spring 2022), upgraded to Starlink satellite internet.

Check in is at 4:00pm MST or later. Given our full house and small staff, we ask that you do not arrive early. Late check in, after 8pm, can be arranged; please call us.

We selected this place because we wanted some peace and quiet after a long day of driving to see all the sights around Rushmore. You do have to drive down a gravel/clay road for about 5 miles to get to this place after leaving the main road, but the road is very well maintained and not a problem at all. Matt and Jen are wonderful hosts who live on the property and available for any questions or issues you might have. We would definitely stay here again!"

Located on the first floor, this area is the original master bedroom of the McDonald Ranch Lodge. The Lodge was designed and built by Richard McDonald, the current resident and owner. The suite has been slightly redesigned to become a lovely space for our guest’s enjoyment.

An entrance to the Master Suite has been added to the cozy, private deck. The deck has built in bench seating beneath a large oak tree. There is also a table with two chairs for outdoor dining.
The suite faces the front of the property, to the East, with views of the fields across the county road. A kitchenette has been added which includes a sink, dining and basic cooking utensils, toaster, drip coffeemaker, microwave, induction hot plate with cooking pans, and dorm size fridge. A large flat screen TV with a Roku stick and remote are included. We use Starlink satellite internet for our WiFi, free of charge for our guests.

This suite includes custom wood flooring, a vaulted ceiling with considerable windows, and a king size bed. The in-suite bathroom includes a large jacuzzi bathtub with windows, sink with expansive counter space, toilet closet, and a spacious walk-in shower.

This suite is ideal for a couple, or as additional space to the adjacent Carriage House Cabin. The Carriage House Cabin is located a few steps away, to the South.
I.E. Dad, Mom, and a couple of little ones in the Carriage House with Grandma and Grandpa in the Master Suite.

There is a three day minimum to reserve the Master Suite.

We do not have guest laundry facilities. There are laundromats in Keystone and Hill City. Garbage cans are located on the West facing part of the main house, where the parking area is.

Unfortunately, due to many considerations, we do not allow pets / animals on the property. No exceptions. If a guest arrives for their reservation with an animal they will NOT be given a rental key NOR issued a refund. Thank you for understanding.

Driving and Parking Info:The Ranch is located directly off of a well maintained and paved county road. Our driveways are hard packed dirt and gravel. We have limited parking near each of the cabins and suites. We have an additional parking area at the rear of the main lodge. We have a large, well kept meadow beyond that for overflow parking of motorcycle trailers, side by sides, etc. We ask that you please do not block the main driveways or the two car garage at the front of the property.

Check in is at 4:00pm MST or later. Check out is by 11:00am MST.
Due to our small staff we do not offer early check in nor late check out.

I located McDonald Ranch during my search and booked during the first portion of Sturgis Bike Week. I assumed my wife would approve and booked without her approval; risky! Take a drive down Ghost Canyon Road where you can take a hiking trail. Take a left onto Playhouse Rd where you’ll find the perfect hike to an abandoned gold mining town of Spokane. Lakota Lake, Center Lake and Bismarck Lake are also very close! Use one of our kayaks and pull out a big Rainbow Trout!

The cozy Marjorie Suite is located on the upper level of Mr. McDonald's private residence. It is located above his kitchen and has its own private entrance, accessed via stairs, located on the North side of the building. Parking is available nearby on the West side of the building.

The Marjorie Suite is cooled by a portable air conditioner. Heat is supplied by a space heater. The suite includes a 32" Roku SmartTV connected to our Starlink satellite internet.
The Marjorie Suite is an open floor plan which sleeps up to 3 people. It has a king size bed and a twin bed. Accommodations include an in-suite bath, single sink, and a walk in shower with glass doors. The kitchenette includes a microwave, toaster, drip coffeemaker, dorm fridge, and an induction hot plate. Basic cooking and eating utensils are provided, including dishes and glasses. We stock basic spices, and a limited amount of coffee and filters. We also provide all bed, bath, and kitchen linens. Please note: This is our only kitchenette that does not include a sink. There is a sink in the bathroom. We stock two dishpans and dish soap. There is a small table and two chairs for dining inside, located within the main suite area. We have another table and chairs, plus benches, on the private deck for outdoor dining and lounging.

This tent is named Pine, you will find a Queen bed, nightstands, end of bed bench, and comfy chairs. Pine tent includes your own covered outdoor sitting area with chairs and hanging lights. This tent does have electricity and is a short walk to the restroom with shower facilities. There are no restrooms inside the tent, nor A/C but both sides of the tent fully unzip to allow airflow.

- "It is not often that a place you book looks exactly like the pictures on the website…THIS ONE totally does!!! It was easy to find and access once on property. There was a clear area to park with enough space for two cars and more down the road if needed. I was prepared to need everything I would for camping. However, I was gladly mistaken to find out that everything you need is provided (plates, mugs, coffee maker with coffee, air fryer, lighter, a/c, fridge etc.) to make it a very easy camping experience. Multiple bathroom options are available on site as well as firewood and a dishwashing station. Everything you need within a few steps of your tent! I was able to spend the evening roasting hotdogs and s’mores over the private fire pit set up behind my tent. Then was able to get a good night sleep on the queen sized mattress that was very clean and comfy! Cannot recommend enough. Will stay again!!"
