The space was clean and comfortable and the hot tub was just what we needed. The cabin is cozy, and it worked well for just the two of us. We took advantage of the hot tub which was very well maintained. We also lit up the firepit on another evening while watching the moon rise over the hills. The cabin is just a few minutes from Monterey (which sits in the valley just below the cabin.) Monterey is a small but interesting town that had everything we needed including several nice restaurants. We recommend Claire's, High's, and The Highlander restaurants. We used the cabin as a launching point for multiple daytrips to Cass WV (for the scenic train and a visit to Snowshoe ski resort), Staunton, and Harrisonburg (for the Skeleton Festival.) The cabin's location somewhat in the middle of all three worked out perfectly. Also, we were just down the road from the Monongahela National Forest and the George Washington National Forest which gave us plenty of beautiful October leaves to look at. Overall, we are very happy we stumbled across the listing for the cabin. It was unpretentious and just what we were looking for. We recommend. "

This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!

The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. Over 155 acres for hiking we have bikes available to ride on back creek. There is a pool table and outdoor ping pong table . There is Roku t v and internet 28 mbps. The full back deck overlooking the creek is great for relaxing and grilling food. We have added a dry sauna in the master bath. Hot tub at back of home for relaxing evenings. Fire pit and sitting area in the back yard and fire wood stocked in shed. Kitchen is stocked with all the dishes and pans you may need and we will have fresh eggs in the fridge from are home during warmer months. Across the road there is a 1.3 mile walking trail through the woods. We strive to have all you need to make your stay enjoyable.The master bed is a medium feel tempur pedic and the guest queen is a sealy hybrid medium feel.

They have a pool table,sauna, hot tub, ping pong table, board games, creek, fire ring, kids playground area, a gazebo. it is absolutely wonderful. it is out in the middle of nowhere without cell service, but they have very reliable 5g internet at the house so you can still text and voip. If you want to get away from it all, but still have all the amenities' plus a lot more, this is the place for you. wonderful nature trails, Green Bank Observitory is just 45 minutes away, Our family of 5 plus dog were all very, very happy hanging out, playing in the creek, making smores, exploring some of the surrounding Townes and just generaly having a lot of time to ourselves to connect."

The Farm House is a turn of the century home located on a 360 acre working farm, just 11 miles from Monterey on Route 84 in beautiful Mill Gap. Guests enjoy panoramic views from two porches, walking trails, farm life, and beautiful night skies. Bird and wildlife watching, fishing, photography and plein air painting are some favorite activities. Other attractions in area include: Big Fish Cidery, Dominion Power Recreational Area, McDowell Battlefield, and Mansion House Historic Museum. The Farm House has five bedrooms and sleeps 12, the first floor bedroom has a queen bed and attached half bath. Four bedrooms are located on the second floor; a queen bed, a double bed, one large room with a double and 2 twins, and a room with 2 twins. Two full baths are located on the second floor.

There is an abundance of eating space in the Farm House with it’s eat in kitchen, dining room, and sun porch. The kitchen is complete with a gas stove, dishwasher, and microwave. A washer and dryer are housed in the mudroom. The living room is equipped with a smart TV, television and DVD player are located in the downstairs bedroom. A library of VCR tapes and DVDs are located in the upstairs bedroom, along with books, games, puzzles, and toys. Internet and WiFi access are located in the dining room.

- "My husband and I just wanted to get away for a mini-vac and we stayed for two nights at this cabin. It was great! The owners thought of everything and they were very helpful in case we needed anything. We saw 17 deer while at the cabin and it was very peaceful there, not too far from a main road. We would definitely recommend this cabin if you don't mind being in an area away from it all. The driveway itself was long, but graveled, and we had no problem at all in our Venza. May need an SUV in the late Fall or Winter. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. MB"

The home is a fully modernized 4 bedroom farmhouse perfect for a family vacation or a weekend getaway, surrounded by 45 acres of private land a mile and a half nature trail maintained for our guests to explore the various areas of the property. Situated in the Blue Grass Valley of Highland County, South Branch Farm is located 15 minutes drive to Monterey.

South Brach Farm takes its name from the headwaters of the South Branch of the Potomac River which flows through the front of this unique 45 acre property.

Cell phone reception is very spotty in Highland County. SBF has a cell phone extender that works well if you are a Verizon customer.

Do keep in mind that this is the country so it doesn’t have the conveniences of modern city life. For example, our water comes from a spring located on the property so guests may need to stagger their showers and limit the use of the washing machine to allow for the water system to keep up.

The Farm is not "working farm" so there is no livestock on the property.

- "We had the most perfect week at the farm. The views are stunning. The weather was perfect. It’s quiet and peaceful. No mosquitos. The stars were amazing. The house served all our needs and was very comfortable. I hope we have a chance to come back!" - "We stopped here at the end of July for a few days on a trip west from the Baltimore/DC area, wanting to show our kids a nighttime sky full of stars. The first night was clear and did not disappoint - it was absolutely beautiful! The property was quiet, both day and night, it was so peaceful. For late July, it was low to mid 70's in the day, and mid 50's at night. It IS a 20 minute drive over the ridge into the next valley to get groceries, so you need to plan ahead, but that's part of the beauty and quiet. If you don't hunt or fish, you have to go a ways to find something to do, but you should know that from looking at the area. The house is great - clean, well decorated, and comfortable. We cook all our meals at home, and the kitchen was well equipped enough to do the same here when we didn't eat out. Bring bug spray; it can get a little annoying when you hang out in the yard, but didn't keep us from roasting marshmallows to make s'mores over the fire pit. I've been to Switzerland, and it's no wonder Highland County is known as little Switzerland - just beautiful everywhere you look, from one valley into the next."

Working from the Blue View—
• The “Bring Your Own Computer” Station.
In an upstairs bedroom there is a desk & chair setup for you to work, including a monitor with USB C dock, speakers, webcam and a keyboard. If your computer has a USB-C port you can connect all of this directly with one USB-C cable, which is provided. If you do not have USB-C ports, you can connect with the provided USB-A adapter and HDMI cable.

Wintertime –
• A lot of thought has been given to keep this two-story cottage comfortable even in the most frigid times. There is a forced air gas furnace that usually does a good job of heating in normal winter temperatures, especially downstairs. For upstairs, and when needed for more warmth, there are also wall-mounted heaters in all bedrooms and in the living room. There is also a good heater in the upstairs bathroom ceiling light/vent fixture.
• Also, the beds upstairs have heated mattress pads, with convenient controls for guests. They will keep you cozy under the covers.

Summertime –
• The house does not have central air-conditioning. For the most part, the mountains and breezes keep Monterey comfortable in the summer. Known as “Little Switzerland” Highland County is always cooler than surrounding areas. Still, on the warmest days, it can be a bit much. Fortunately, it almost always cools outside to a comfortable level in the evening. And usually if you open the windows and use the fans, it will be fine. The windows are all pretty new, open and close easily and have good screens.
• Air conditioners. We now have window air conditioners in all the bedrooms, plus one in the main living area that cools the sunroom and living room. We prefer the windows open and a cool breeze drawn inside with the ceiling and room fans, but if the A/C appeals, have at it! The air-conditioners are removed in the winter.

The Road –
• The home is located on VA Route 220, a two lane highway. The speed limit is 25 right at the home, but it is higher very close by. Although it is not very busy, it does have some large trucks that use it, so occasionally you will hear road noise.
On the plus side, you are likely to hear the clippity-clop of Amish buggies as well.

**WARNING**
SNOW / SKIING – Driveway issue
In the winter months, folks have enjoyed using the Blue View as a base for skiing at Snowshoe WV. If coming in the winter, please note:
If it actively snowing or just stopped, your vehicles may temporarily be blocked in the driveway. The road that the house is on is generally one of the first to be cleared. However, the snowplows pile the snow on the side of the road at the top of the driveway, so it is blocked. We have a service to unblock the driveway when this occurs, but depending on the time the snow stops and the roads are plowed, this could prevent or delay your trip to ski (or go anywhere). A 4WD vehicle is recommended. There is also a snow shovel in the carport if you do not wish to wait for the service.

Children –
• I began coming to Highland County as child from the city, camping and hiking and exploring a whole new magical world. I know what a treat it is for kids, and what a joy to see it again through their eyes. You should know though, that there are not special accommodations for very young children here. There is no special furniture, no stair gates, no child-proofing or toys. BYO extras and good sense.

- "We stayed for the weekend and used the house as a home base for our day trip Snowshoe. Cute, cozy and felt like home." - "We really enjoyed our stay. The house was nice and it was close to town." - "We visited Monterey for the Maple Festival. The location of Blue View allowed us to take a short walk into town (most of it on a sidewalk) and avoid parking and traffic issues on the busiest day (Saturday). There were several contact numbers in case we needed assistance. We didn’t. Everything worked well. Internet service was very good. The house was clean and had everything we needed. There was plenty of parking space. The host was accessible before arrival to give us the address and access code. A book was provide that gave clear and concise directions for operating everything. I highly recommend Blue View."

This getaway home is setting on 172 sprawling acres with amazing views all around. Plenty of land to hike or ATV. Crystal clear mountain spring water straight from the tap ! Land includes many logging roads and trails. Abundant wild life which includes white tail deer and turkey. Large front porch with deck chairs .The home has a master bedroom with a King size bed. The second bedroom has a queen size bed. The third bedroom has a bunk bed , the bottom bunk is a full size, top bunk is a twin. Two full bathrooms Large beautiful rock fireplace with cathedral ceilings with fan. Complete kitchen , stove with microwave and dishwasher, garbage disposal.Also includes washer and dryer. Gas grille. Also includes dish network and STARLINK internet.You can make phone calls thru the WiFi network.. Home also has a window A/C unit in the dining room. The house is also equipped with a central ceiling fan that draws in cool outside air for entire house when windows are open. Horse shoe pits are finished .We do have corn hole boards ready to go.

Spring and Summer guests will be visited daily by many humming birds who make their home on the farm. You will see a variety of red tail hawks an occasional bald eagle flying on the farm. A large heard of deer along with their new born fawns. The majestic wild turkey will let you know he is around with many morning gobbles. . At nights you will see a million stars as you sit around the rock campfire outside. WE ALSO PROVIDE ALL YOUR FIREWOOD for the campfire/ fireplace. The wood is a mix of white and red oak and some cherry mixed in. So you don’t have to worry about having to buy any! There is zero light pollution. You may even hear an occasional coyote howling in the distance. We also have cows grazing the fields munching grass. ..Note... there are no bulls ...There are steers and females only. Visitors at the end of July will find thousands of blackberries to pick.

This home is located in the heart of syrup making country! It’s approx 5 miles from McDowell and 14 miles from Monterey and will be available for to rent for the annual Highland County Sugar Maple Festival. The farm is also located approx 3 miles from the national forest. Their are many local trout streams to fish which include the calf pasture and bull pasture river. Also many smaller local native trout streams. I know where all the honey holes are for the trout..;) Or you can visit the Virginia Trout Company in Monterey for Rainbow and Brook Trout, also the Sugar Grove trophy trout ponds. There is also another native trout steam that I can tell you about , but count on it being an all day trip! The small town of McDowell has a home town grocery store (Grants Grocery) they make fresh sandwiches/ home made biscuits and barbecue daily. There is also a small gas station just up the road that is famous for its fresh cinnamon buns. McDowell also has “Sugar Tree Country Store “for maple syrup lovers. Monterey also offers a wonderful dining experience at the Highlander..They also have a quaint restaurant called “Highs” with down home country cooking if that is your fancy.

Fall and Winter guests will wake up to brisk cool mornings with fall foliage. Our farm has a variety of Oak and Maple trees that will light up the day with amazing colors. You also will see a variety of native apple trees. Some of these trees are over 100 years old and still produce an abundance of apples. You will notice a large variety of different apple types with over 30 native trees on the property. Black Walnut trees are full of fox squirrels. There is also an old home on the farm that was built in 1916. The home is at an altitude of 2800 feet above sea level and at the top of our upper field , the altitude tops out at 3400 feet. So you will see snow! We have great hills for sledding!!!For skiers , the ski resorts of Snow Shoe and the Homestead are about an hour and a half drive from the farm. Many many things to do! But If you want complete privacy and just want to sit on the front porch with a cup of coffee, you have this as well. The farm is almost a mile off the less traveled small trail ( route 617) with a chain gate and a additional metal gate you will need to travel thru to get to the farm. Please note you should have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the property in the latter part of November and into the winter. Especially December and January.

This property has been in our family since 1979. The home was built in 2005. It is a very special place for me and my family to go and recharge our batteries from hectic work weeks. We are active hikers, hunters and paint ballers! We love the outdoors and would like to share our piece of heaven with you.

- "Awesome piece of property. The views, the river just gorgeous. Will go again." - "We enjoyed our stay here. The fire pit was great and the kitchen was well-equipped. Lots of hiking opportunities nearby. Lots of beds to fit a lot of people!" - "The stay was relaxing. However couple of things, the flies are really a nuisance both inside and outside. Btw we think a skunk has made its residence under the big shed. We saw it pass us couple of times but were lucky to not be sprayed. Another thing, the river looks like it’s right behind the property where I thought I could sit on the patio and watch the kids…Nope! It’s a bit of a walk and the grass is so tall and uncut that we all have cuts around our ankles from walking in it. I inquired about fish in the river (our stay was supposed to be a relaxing fishing trip for the kids) but the team had no information about the fish in the river. Btw there are some small crawfish and maybe tiny bluegills but not for the fishing line which is what my kids were looking forward to. This is in the month of July so it may be different other times. The house is decent and the location has absolutely no call signal (only spotty WiFi). But we enjoyed disconnecting from the online world! Great weekend trip!"

There is a twin-size rollaway bed available.The living room has a gas log fireplace. The cottage has an open floor plan, no steps with easy access from the driveway. Linens and towels are provided.
