- "We had arrived pretty late at night and had a little trouble finding the place, but once we did, we found it was just as cozy as the pictures showed. The space was clean and comfortable and the hot tub was just what we needed. Not only would I love to come back but I would recommend this place to everyone." - "We were looking for a quiet, out in the country place to celebrate our anniversary and came across this quaint cabin just outside Monterey, VA. The cabin is cozy, and it worked well for just the two of us. We took advantage of the hot tub which was very well maintained. We also lit up the firepit on another evening while watching the moon rise over the hills. The cabin is just a few minutes from Monterey (which sits in the valley just below the cabin.) Monterey is a small but interesting town that had everything we needed including several nice restaurants. We recommend Claire's, High's, and The Highlander restaurants. We used the cabin as a launching point for multiple daytrips to Cass WV (for the scenic train and a visit to Snowshoe ski resort), Staunton, and Harrisonburg (for the Skeleton Festival.) The cabin's location somewhat in the middle of all three worked out perfectly. Also, we were just down the road from the Monongahela National Forest and the George Washington National Forest which gave us plenty of beautiful October leaves to look at. Overall, we are very happy we stumbled across the listing for the cabin. It was unpretentious and just what we were looking for. We recommend. "

Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia nestled in a grove of sugar maples between Back Creek and Little Mountain. Wake up to valley views which are likely to include deer grazing in the meadow, hummingbirds at the feeder, or a Bald eagle or great blue heron fishing along the creek. This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!
The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. You are invited to watch (and smell!) the process of turning 50 gallons of sugar water into a gallon of pure maple syrup - or you can help us if you would like!
There are a variety of hiking, hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, and access to both the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests is nearby.
The Cabin is located 16 miles from the quaint town of Monterey. Walking tours, galleries and shops, restaurants, beautiful mountain views, and friendly people make Highland County special all year round. The Cabin on Back Creek offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by a variety of recreational opportunities. The Cabin is located on a working farm. Please be aware that we do offer tours (and sales) at our sugar house which is sited adjacent to the Cabin. There may be some activities there during your stay. Short walking distance to the Shaw's Ridge Trail.Short driving distance to Shenandoah mountain and the Confederate breastworks. A few miles from historical McDowell and Monterey,Highland County,Virginia. Enjoyed out door activities such as fishing hunting hiking biking kayaking in the area.
- "Very comfortable and welcoming home a-way from home - lots of "extras" available stocked in the pantry. The Farm fresh eggs were a special treat! The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and the large living room and kitchen space was great! The only drawback occurred our last night - when we had an invasion of flying bugs come in through the AC units. The area itself is delightful!" - "Great" - "Durwood and Teresa communicated promptly and thoroughly, making sure we had all house info as well as local recommendations and better directions than GPS. It was a perfect place to get away with friends between our two cities, in a home prepared with such care and hospitality. We sat around the fire pit in the crisp evening breeze, taking in the gorgeous Virginia views and skies. We enjoyed the fresh eggs and grass-fed beef - delightful surprises that made all of us feel so cared for during our stay. Thank you so much, Durwood and Teresa!"

- "Great location! Just a short drive to the WV line and close to Monterey. Outstanding view. Just enough seclusion to be comfortable and cozy with the mountain feel we were craving but close enough to easily make your way for any needed supplies. We loved it and plan to return" - "Recomended!!!!" - "The house was spotlessly clean, the view was gorgeous, and the entire vacation was peaceful. The dog loved the fenced yard, and the cows came up to say hi. The kitchen is well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. We spent many hours on the deep, wrap around porch, eating meals, playing games, gazing at the valley, and watching the cloud formations come over the mountains. There are many games and puzzles at the house, and the internet was reliable. Three things to note. First, as is typical for a mountain area, the driveway is steep, and very low cars may drag in a few spots. Second, there is no air conditioning; although the area cools down nicely at night, it can be stuffy in the day time, so if you visit in summer, bring fans. The master bedroom and common areas have ceiling fans; the upstairs bedrooms do not. Third, bring groceries with you, as local options are limited, especially on Sundays."

Brand new construction makes this unique and tranquil cabin an excellent getaway. Far removed from the main town road, wildlife and nature abound making every day a great day. And just a few minutes drive takes you to the heart of Monterey.
- "My husband and I just wanted to get away for a mini-vac and we stayed for two nights at this cabin. It was great! The owners thought of everything and they were very helpful in case we needed anything. We saw 17 deer while at the cabin and it was very peaceful there, not too far from a main road. We would definitely recommend this cabin if you don't mind being in an area away from it all. The driveway itself was long, but graveled, and we had no problem at all in our Venza. May need an SUV in the late Fall or Winter. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. MB"
