Guest Reviews:

- "We had arrived pretty late at night and had a little trouble finding the place, but once we did, we found it was just as cozy as the pictures showed. The space was clean and comfortable and the hot tub was just what we needed. Not only would I love to come back but I would recommend this place to everyone." - "We were looking for a quiet, out in the country place to celebrate our anniversary and came across this quaint cabin just outside Monterey, VA. The cabin is cozy, and it worked well for just the two of us. We took advantage of the hot tub which was very well maintained. We also lit up the firepit on another evening while watching the moon rise over the hills. The cabin is just a few minutes from Monterey (which sits in the valley just below the cabin.) Monterey is a small but interesting town that had everything we needed including several nice restaurants. We recommend Claire's, High's, and The Highlander restaurants. We used the cabin as a launching point for multiple daytrips to Cass WV (for the scenic train and a visit to Snowshoe ski resort), Staunton, and Harrisonburg (for the Skeleton Festival.) The cabin's location somewhat in the middle of all three worked out perfectly. Also, we were just down the road from the Monongahela National Forest and the George Washington National Forest which gave us plenty of beautiful October leaves to look at. Overall, we are very happy we stumbled across the listing for the cabin. It was unpretentious and just what we were looking for. We recommend. "

Guest Reviews:

- "Great location! Just a short drive to the WV line and close to Monterey. Outstanding view. Just enough seclusion to be comfortable and cozy with the mountain feel we were craving but close enough to easily make your way for any needed supplies. We loved it and plan to return" - "Recomended!!!!" - "The house was spotlessly clean, the view was gorgeous, and the entire vacation was peaceful. The dog loved the fenced yard, and the cows came up to say hi. The kitchen is well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. We spent many hours on the deep, wrap around porch, eating meals, playing games, gazing at the valley, and watching the cloud formations come over the mountains. There are many games and puzzles at the house, and the internet was reliable. Three things to note. First, as is typical for a mountain area, the driveway is steep, and very low cars may drag in a few spots. Second, there is no air conditioning; although the area cools down nicely at night, it can be stuffy in the day time, so if you visit in summer, bring fans. The master bedroom and common areas have ceiling fans; the upstairs bedrooms do not. Third, bring groceries with you, as local options are limited, especially on Sundays."

Guest Reviews:

- "My husband and I just wanted to get away for a mini-vac and we stayed for two nights at this cabin. It was great! The owners thought of everything and they were very helpful in case we needed anything. We saw 17 deer while at the cabin and it was very peaceful there, not too far from a main road. We would definitely recommend this cabin if you don't mind being in an area away from it all. The driveway itself was long, but graveled, and we had no problem at all in our Venza. May need an SUV in the late Fall or Winter. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. MB"

- "Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Will definitely be staying again. The hosts were fantastic!! " - "My daughter and I (and our two Corgis) loved the cabin and its surroundings. We live in noisy suburbia and the absence of man-made noise was wonderful. The only noise we heard was from birds and insects, and the occasional moo. The cabin was exactly as advertised, and George and Kathy were wonderful hosts!" - "Stayed with my family in the adorable cabin. It was clean and comfortable, and the hosts were super nice and helpful. The area was very remote and peaceful. Make sure to bring your own food as there's not a lot of restaurants or shopping close by. Would definitely visit again."

Working from the Blue View—
• The “Bring Your Own Computer” Station.
In an upstairs bedroom there is a desk & chair setup for you to work, including a monitor with USB C dock, speakers, webcam and a keyboard. If your computer has a USB-C port you can connect all of this directly with one USB-C cable, which is provided. If you do not have USB-C ports, you can connect with the provided USB-A adapter and HDMI cable.

Wintertime –
• A lot of thought has been given to keep this two-story cottage comfortable even in the most frigid times. There is a forced air gas furnace that usually does a good job of heating in normal winter temperatures, especially downstairs. For upstairs, and when needed for more warmth, there are also wall-mounted heaters in all bedrooms and in the living room. There is also a good heater in the upstairs bathroom ceiling light/vent fixture.
• Also, the beds upstairs have heated mattress pads, with convenient controls for guests. They will keep you cozy under the covers.

Summertime –
• The house does not have central air-conditioning. For the most part, the mountains and breezes keep Monterey comfortable in the summer. Known as “Little Switzerland” Highland County is always cooler than surrounding areas. Still, on the warmest days, it can be a bit much. Fortunately, it almost always cools outside to a comfortable level in the evening. And usually if you open the windows and use the fans, it will be fine. The windows are all pretty new, open and close easily and have good screens.
• Air conditioners. We now have window air conditioners in all the bedrooms, plus one in the main living area that cools the sunroom and living room. We prefer the windows open and a cool breeze drawn inside with the ceiling and room fans, but if the A/C appeals, have at it! The air-conditioners are removed in the winter.

The Road –
• The home is located on VA Route 220, a two lane highway. The speed limit is 25 right at the home, but it is higher very close by. Although it is not very busy, it does have some large trucks that use it, so occasionally you will hear road noise.
On the plus side, you are likely to hear the clippity-clop of Amish buggies as well.

**WARNING**
SNOW / SKIING – Driveway issue
In the winter months, folks have enjoyed using the Blue View as a base for skiing at Snowshoe WV. If coming in the winter, please note:
If it actively snowing or just stopped, your vehicles may temporarily be blocked in the driveway. The road that the house is on is generally one of the first to be cleared. However, the snowplows pile the snow on the side of the road at the top of the driveway, so it is blocked. We have a service to unblock the driveway when this occurs, but depending on the time the snow stops and the roads are plowed, this could prevent or delay your trip to ski (or go anywhere). A 4WD vehicle is recommended. There is also a snow shovel in the carport if you do not wish to wait for the service.

Children –
• I began coming to Highland County as child from the city, camping and hiking and exploring a whole new magical world. I know what a treat it is for kids, and what a joy to see it again through their eyes. You should know though, that there are not special accommodations for very young children here. There is no special furniture, no stair gates, no child-proofing or toys. BYO extras and good sense.

Guest Reviews:

- "We stayed for the weekend and used the house as a home base for our day trip Snowshoe. Cute, cozy and felt like home." - "We really enjoyed our stay. The house was nice and it was close to town." - "We visited Monterey for the Maple Festival. The location of Blue View allowed us to take a short walk into town (most of it on a sidewalk) and avoid parking and traffic issues on the busiest day (Saturday). There were several contact numbers in case we needed assistance. We didn’t. Everything worked well. Internet service was very good. The house was clean and had everything we needed. There was plenty of parking space. The host was accessible before arrival to give us the address and access code. A book was provide that gave clear and concise directions for operating everything. I highly recommend Blue View."

- "What a nice, quiet & relaxing weekend we had staying in your lovely home! We felt so fortunate to be able to return to Highland county for the Maple Festival this year and returning to your house after our busy days was delightful. There was so much to experience in this gem of a county! We visited the Gorge and the various craft shows, ate yummy pancakes, and of course, visited several sugar camps. I think we tried just about everything maple there was available to try! Saturday night was totally clear and with no light pollution to speak of, we could see STARS! That was amazing - I could actually see the Milky Way and for the first time in my life, I saw a shooting star. The deck/porch area was the perfect place for viewing! I hope to be able to return. - "Our family greatly enjoyed the beauty and privacy of Seldom Seen Farm. The firepit in the backyard is the perfect spot to enjoy clear nights when the sky is illumined with millions of star. The front porch porch provides a peaceful view of the distant mountains. Watch out for Cow #77 who enjoyed rubbing against our car. Seldom Seen Farm is an excellent value." - "Our family spent a week here over the summer. Out in the true country with the most awe inspiring views. We have 2 large dogs that were welcomed here and they rate it a 1 out of 10! The cattle herd surrounded the camp fence at one ooint every day. Comfy seats on the porch and filled hummingbird feeders provided hours of entertainment. The camp had everything we needed, and then some. They truly welcomed us into their camp. Many amazing memories made. Many little spots to visit for day trips and lunch out. Planned to eat in most nights, as town is 1/2 hour away and not all restaurants open every night. But thats why we came out here. Plus the stargazing is beyond compare!"

- "Awesome piece of property. The views, the river just gorgeous. Will go again." - "We enjoyed our stay here. The fire pit was great and the kitchen was well-equipped. Lots of hiking opportunities nearby. Lots of beds to fit a lot of people!" - "The stay was relaxing. However couple of things, the flies are really a nuisance both inside and outside. Btw we think a skunk has made its residence under the big shed. We saw it pass us couple of times but were lucky to not be sprayed. Another thing, the river looks like it’s right behind the property where I thought I could sit on the patio and watch the kids…Nope! It’s a bit of a walk and the grass is so tall and uncut that we all have cuts around our ankles from walking in it. I inquired about fish in the river (our stay was supposed to be a relaxing fishing trip for the kids) but the team had no information about the fish in the river. Btw there are some small crawfish and maybe tiny bluegills but not for the fishing line which is what my kids were looking forward to. This is in the month of July so it may be different other times. The house is decent and the location has absolutely no call signal (only spotty WiFi). But we enjoyed disconnecting from the online world! Great weekend trip!"

Guest Reviews:

- "Took the kids and grandparents to Cass and Greenbank. Excellent location for those activities. House was clean and cozy. We decided to grill out and have s'mores instead of driving an hour to get a restaurant, it was perfect. There isn't much around, which for me was a good thing." - "This house is very nice and clean. The location is right off the highway and is great if you are skiing at Snowshoe or attending other events in West Virginia and Virginia. We were there for the Maple Festival located in Monterey, VA. Overall the house is as it appears in the listing with one little thing all should know. The second queen bedroom is not accessible from the main house. The entrance is located from the back deck and you do have to walk in the elements. If you have little ones, this room is not ideal when planning. Also, there is not a blow dryer provided for all those that don't usually travel with one. (unless they add from my suggestion to management). I would stay at this rental if I needed something in that area again."

Just about perfect for a family reunion, a corporate retreat, or an intimate, fun-filled wedding, this McDowell home brings a wealth of entertainment to the banks of the Bullpasture River. There are games, activities, and amenities for all ages and interests, from the game room and movie theater to the private pool in the glass house.

Built in 1907 and thoughtfully updated in the century since, this riverfront home is perched on a hillside in small-town McDowell. The setting is beautiful, with the river below, the mountains off in the distance, and the Virginia countryside stretching out before you.

What makes this home so special are the amenities you'll find at every turn. Looking to host a tournament with friends and family? Try Ping-Pong, air hockey, dual-shot basketball, foosball, ring toss, or darts. Interested in games? Opt for cornhole, Giant Jenga, or Giant Four-in-a-Row. Hoping for some unmatched relaxation? Take a dip in the pool, screen a movie in the home theater (with seating for nine adults and six kids) featuring a 120-inch projection screen, or gather in the game room for drinks at the bar and live music courtesy of a karaoke machine, an electronic drum set, standing bongos, a piano, speakers, and - of course - a stage.

Every space feels roomy enough for a crowd, from the expansive kitchen to the multiple decks overlooking the natural scenery. Spend mornings sipping coffee on the outdoor swing, afternoons barbecuing on the gas grill, and evenings telling stories by the fireplace before retreating to the steam shower in the primary bathroom. Additional amenities include two refrigerators, a washer/dryer, complimentary WiFi, and smart TVs throughout the house.

Guest Reviews:

- "We came up here for a retreat and had a very nice experience. The house was well kept when we got here and had plenty of space for our large group of 24 people. There were plenty of towels, blankets, and pillow for all us. Furthermore, the decks had amazing views of the mountains and was definitely a huge plus. Overall, I would say it was lovely house and area to be at for the weekend, and would like to go back again." - "Our family came down to enjoy the sugar maple festival and stayed at this incredible hidden gem! We enjoyed the giant rec room during a rainy day and explored the property on the nice day! Would definitely stay here again. If you’re an adventurous family who loves history then this is your spot! The space
Wintertime –
• This two story home has a forced air gas furnace that usually does a good job of heating the downstairs (except in extraordinarily frigid times). The furnace doesn't heat upstairs quite as well. To keep it comfortable, there are also wall-mounted heaters in all bedrooms and in the living room.

Still, on the warmest days, it can be a bit much. Fortunately, it almost always cools outside to a comfortable level in the evening. And usually if you open the windows and use the fans, it will be fine. The windows are all new, open and close easily and have good screens.
• Air conditioners. We have window air conditioner in the two larger bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs.

** Warning **
SNOW / SKIING – Driveway issue

In the winter months, folks have enjoyed using the Blue View as a base for skiing at Snowshoe WV. If this is your plan, please note:

If it actively snowing, your vehicles may temporarily be blocked in the driveway. The road that the house is on is generally one of the first to be cleared. However, the plows pile the snow on the side of the road at the top of the driveway, so it is blocked. We have a service to unblock the driveway when this occurs, but depending on the time the snow stops and the roads are plowed, this could prevent or delay your trip to ski (or go anywhere). A 4WD vehicle is recommended. There is also a snow shovel on the premises if you do not wish to wait for the service.

Children –
• I began coming to Highland County as child from the city, camping and hiking and exploring a whole new magical world. I know what a treat it is for kids, and what a joy to see it again through their eyes. You should know though, that there are not special accommodations for very young children here. There is no special furniture, child-proofing, or toys. BYO extras and good sense.

The cottage is part of Virginia’s Bird & Wildlife Trail, located on the Little Switzerland Loop, making it a perfect base for exploring the region’s diverse flora and fauna.

Guest access
Guests at Fern Cottage have full access to the entire property, including the cottage itself as well as the beautiful 25 acres of surrounding hills and woodlands. You will receive a unique 4-digit code to the smart lock on the upstairs back door that’s automatically generated and shared when your booking is confirmed.

Other things to note
*** Conectivity ***
There is no cell service at the property, but 100 Mbps WiFi internet is available.

*** Split-Level Access ***
For guests with infants or toddlers, the cottage's upstairs and downstairs each have their own entrance and are connected by an exterior stone stairway, however there is no internal staircase between the levels.

*** Winter Snow Advisory ***
A regular two-wheel-drive car should have no problem getting up the driveway under normal conditions.
If it snows during your stay however, it could become a bit more challenging, as it is long, gravel, and has some fairly steep sections. We do our best to have it promptly plowed, but in case we can’t get to it right away, using a four-wheel-drive vehicle or one with snow tires could be advisable. If you have any concerns about accessing it though, please reach out to us with any questions.
