We have been vacation rental owners in Harpers Ferry since 2009 (see VRBO 265656), and are committed to ensuring that our guests enjoy a comfortable and truly unique stay in one of the most historic and charming towns on the East Coast.
We acquired this charming new (200 year old!) house and spent 2020 completing renovations. Like our other downtown Harpers Ferry vacation rental, this 200 year old home is located in the heart of downtown Harpers Ferry and on top of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Restaurants, shops, hiking trails (including the Appalachian Trail,) museums, and shops are quite literally feet away.
The front door of the house is off of the front porch at the top of the stairs (see pictures). Hang out on the front porch and enjoy the beautiful mountain views and the activity in town below you, or enter through the front door into a charming living room. Off of the living room you will find a fully-equipped eat-in kitchen with dining table for 6 plus 3 countertop stools and a half bath. Head up the stairs to the second floor where you will find 2 bright bedrooms (both with awesome views!), a full bath, and a super-cozy TV room. Exit out to the back patio from the TV room, and wander up the hill in the back yard to find an absolutely spectacular view of the Harpers Ferry Gap!
This truly is a one-of-a-kind house in an amazing location. OH...It also comes with a parking space (a HUGE bonus in Harpers Ferry!!). Please note that the parking space is located on Potomac Street, and you must climb 65 steps up to High Street where the house is located. Luggage drop-off is permitted any time except Saturday and Sunday between 11AM and 5PM. Also, please note that the stairs in this house are very steep! Please keep this in mind if you have trouble with stairs!
- "This is the 2nd time we stayed here. Great porch to enjoy your favorite beverage and watch tourists. Property was very clean and enjoyed the lovely town." - "This property is incredible. Great location right across from all the shops and restaurants. Great mix of modern amenities and old-time experience. The interior design is thoughtful and makes for a cozy stay. Jill was very helpful and communicative. The front porch is very comfortable and relaxing. If you are sensitive to noise (which we are not) there is a train line that runs within ear shot of the property. We found it charming, and our daughter loved watching the trains go by. Would definitely stay again"

Well within walking distance to the town center." - "We spent 3 nights in Harpers Ferry in the upstairs unit of this converted carriage house. It was packed with interesting tchotchkes, had a nice TV, and contained a well-supplied kitchen with breakfast groceries provided from a list sent by the owner-- not to mention a quiche, which we ended up eating for dinner. I loved waking up to sit on the back-porch glider-bench, watching the many back-yard birds. And we both loved the interesting historical town of Harpers Ferry, along with the hikes along the river and in the National Historical area. We highly recommend this place."

Summary:
Welcome to Waverly Cottage, hosted by Blue Maple!
An elegant 1840s Victorian with its own delightful history -- right in the heart of Historic Downtown! The perfect location for your Harpers Ferry stay.
The highlights:
- Just steps to downtown Harpers Ferry (we’re surrounded by the National Park!)
- Relax with a glass of wine on the private front or back porches
- Curl up with a book in the sunny sitting room
- Stream movies or take video calls on the fastest WiFi in the mountains
The Space:
Our cozy retreat has all the comforts of home, nestled right in the center of Historic Harpers Ferry. With its blend of historical charm and modern safety, this Victorian gem promises a memorable and comfortable stay, ensuring you experience both its unique character and modern conveniences in complete comfort. Waverly Cottage is ideal for couples, families, or small groups of friends -- and is the perfect home base for your getaway!
The cottage includes:
- 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds
- 1 full bathroom and the second one is a half bath (full bath located in the master bedroom, 1/2 bath is off the kitchen)
- Two additional pull-out beds, one in the living room (queen) and the other in the sitting room (twin)
- Cute front porch with a bench -- perfect for people watching :)
- Large elevated back porch with two comfy chairs and a bench to relax with a glass of wine
- Fully-stocked kitchen with a stove/oven and microwave
- Central AC and heat to keep you comfortable (please note the AC is currently out of service, but repairs are in the works)
- SmartTV with access to all your favorite streaming services
- Fast, reliable WiFi that’s more than enough to stream movies and hold video calls
- Parking directly in front of the cottage (2 parking passes for your stay)
Much of this Victorian Gem is in its original form and has been lovingly maintained over the last 165 years, from the original 1840s foundation, to the one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted porch trim, gable shingles, and hardwood floors and stone landscaping borders. We hope you will most of all enjoy the historic charm and unique piece of history that this property represents.
Enjoy your mornings or evenings on the balcony, which offers a peaceful retreat with lovely views. Whether you're sipping coffee or simply taking in the fresh air, the balcony is a perfect spot to relax and unwind. To really create an inviting atmosphere, open the doors for a gentle crossflow breeze through the house.
One of the best aspects of Waverly Cottage is the location. We’re surrounded by the boundaries of the National Park (it’s across the street) and literally steps (2 minute walk with steep walking paths along the way) from all of the major sites in Harpers Ferry (less ¼ mile from John Brown’s Fort). We’re also just a short 5 minute walk from the Appalachian Trail. Bring your walking shoes!
We often take our three little kids to the cottage, so we're very family-friendly. Unfortunately, we don't allow any dogs or cats in the cottage.
Our cleaning team sweeps the deck, stairs, and walkways before each arrival, but due to the natural setting, you may still notice some leaves, pollen, or similar—especially during certain seasons. We appreciate your understanding as nature tends to leave its mark, no matter how often we tidy up!
Our AC is currently taking a little break, but repairs are already scheduled and should be completed soon! Thank you for your understanding—we’re excited to host you and make sure you have a great stay in the meantime.
Beyond Historic Harpers Ferry, we love how close to everything we are! Fantastic hiking trails, kayaking and tubing on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, and dozens of amazing little shops, restaurants, and wineries -- all within a 20 minute drive.
- "Probably the best possible location in the Harper's Ferry area. The cottage was wonderful, very quaint and comfortable. It's location is perfect, nestled in the woods and, as described, only walking minutes from the Harper's Ferry sights. A day did not go by that we did not see wildlife in the back or front of the house. Tony was the best host we've had in VRBO." - "Lovely historic home that was easy walking distance to attractions and restaurants. The beds were comfortable and the whole home was very well stocked and appointed."

- "Property sits at a good location for seeing all the history that Harpers Ferry has to offer. Directions getting there were easy and clear as well as checking in and out." - "Great location, beautiful living area. We had a great time!" - "Loved staying in this apartment close to Harper Ferry attractions. Beautiful decor, clean and within walking distance of downtown Harper's Ferry. Great communication with the owner." - "We enjoyed the apartment at the perfect location, within walking distance of all that the historical town of Harpers Ferry has to offer. Keep in mind, its at the top of the hill, as the name states. You walk down the hill to the shoppes, eateries, and historical sites, and you must walk back up the hill at the end of the day. Its a basement appartment with small windows and lots of interior lighting. We used the electric fireplace nightly. The murphy bed in the living room was extremely comfortabble, as well as all the clean linens, blanket and quilt. The living room is large enough that it was not necessary to fold up the murphy bed during the day. There is plenty of space. Everything was clean and spotless. The hosts were helpful with information and reponsive to a random request during our stay. I wouldnt hesitate to stay at this location again."

Movie room with 92" Smart TV. full cable and Netflix, Prime, Sirus XM, and many more. 30+ wineries or breweries within 20 miles. Note: if this one is not available for your time needs please see our other property just across the street called "Entire Townhouse | 30+ wineries | luxury design " Hopefully one meets your needs. If your a larger party consider both properties. Literally a hundred feet apart.
Neighborhood
See for yourself why Thomas Jefferson called this picturesque landscape ""perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.". There is always something going on in HF, be it a Civil War re-enactment or filming for upcoming film and documentaries (e.g. The Good Lord Bird on Showtime about John Brown, or Emperor, The Raid at Harpers Ferry 2020.). The Townhouse itself rests in a peaceful neighborhood that like all of Harpers Ferry is diametrical with some houses modern and pristine (like ours) and some old and weathered. It is the same no matter where you go in the 220 year old town. It is a quarter mile walk to Washington Street, the main drag that leads down into the Old Town Harpers Ferry. Washington Street has all the great restaurants, bars and occasional live music at the Anvil and the Barn, all within a quarter mile of the Townhouse. New: walk to the Wine Bar at the General Store on Washington St. with Weekend wine tastings of mostly international wines, also wine for sale. This guy is very knowledgeable about his wines. Walk over the hill behind the neighborhood to find the Potomac at the bottom. Tons of hiking trails just outside the front door to Bolivar Heights, or slightly longer hike to more famous hiking trails like the AT, Loudon Lookout Heights or Maryland Heights. Need a launch pad for visiting wineries and breweries? The TH is central to over 30 wineries and 10 breweries within 25 miles. Please don't drink and drive, you can take an Uber from here.
Fees
Pet Fee (if applicable) - Pets: We may allow pets on conditions. 1) pay the pet fee 2) follow local leash laws (all pets outside of house must be on a leash). 3) bag and pick up pet waste and dispose of in toilets or outside trashcan (but only if in a bag). If you bring a pet, please tell us and say you have a pet on your reservation as our cleaners charge us a $50 fee to use "odor ban" on the entire house and do extra cleaning for any pet hair. If they determine there was a pet they will charge me, and I'll pass the fee along to our guest. We have sensitive non-pet owner guests with allergies so the extra cleaning has to be extra detailed. Hence the fee. 100% of it goes to the cleaning crew. None to me.
- "First of all, let me just say that Paul was so incredibly helpful and kind the entire time, from booking, to helping navigate, to arrival. He responded so quickly and it was truly such a pleasant experience to book with him. As far as the house goes, WOW. I booked here as a little luxurious weekend getaway, and I couldn’t be happier. Honestly, I barely even left to explore the town, there was just that much to enjoy in the home. Everything was gorgeous, and you can tell that every detail was meticulously planned for both aesthetic pleasure and comfort. And the movie room- I mean really, I cannot state how cool it was. Pictures do not do it justice. The mattresses were incredibly comfortable, and the master bathroom truly felt like a spa. To top it all off, everything was pristine. I look forward to visiting again."

- "My husband and I stayed for two nights at this brand new home. It was so new that we were only the second clients to stay. This home exceeded expectations by a long shot. It was beautifully decorated in a very comfortable fashion. All of the furniture (couch, beds, chairs) were very comfy. I liked some of the furniture so much that I may purchase something similar for my home. My husband enjoyed the sauna very much.Ben, the owner, was very easy to communicate with and was very nice about stopping by to help this technically challenged visitor with the tv. The area has a great deal to do and some very good restaurants. Don't miss touring the Antietam Battlefield. Thanks, Ben and Kate for a very enjoyable stay!Debbie and David "

- "We just wanted to get away and do a little hiking with the kids during spring break. The location is great if your goal is to be active. It's less than a mile down to Harper's ferry. The best food we had was at the owners restaurant right across the parking lot. Yes it's small and yes it's over a bar, but we were comfortable and took advantage of the live music. If your kids will be picky about sleeping on a futon, you might want to try a different place. The master bed was quite comfortable. We were very happy with the whole experience!"

- "We had a lovely one night stay in the mountain view room. The bed was comfortable, the host was gracious, and the building was old and gorgeous." - "This property is rustic- a house built in 1820. It is simple beauty not luxury. I loved the period pieces in the room. The owner and staff are friendly, helpful and full of insight. Their Market Place is fully stocked. There are plenty of patios for enjoying privacy in the back or mountain and town views in the front. Absolutely loved my stay and was truly sad to leave."

Glamping in Harpers Ferry! Elevated 8' x 16' cabin in a lush garden property surrounded by trees. Full bathroom w/rain showerhead. King bed can be converted to 2 twins if requested. 1940s vintage decor. Minifridge, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker, elec kettle, minigriddle. NO STOVE. Opens to an 8' x 16' screened porch w/ceiling fan, comfy seating, kitchen table & sink. Private spot yet in walking distance to many HF activities & dinner restaurants. Indoor/outdoor living & in-town convenience.
The space
Located in the Harpers Ferry residential Historic District, the tiny cabin is inspired by 1940s Park Service cabins but with modern comforts and amenities, a rainfall showerhead, an Allswell mattress, full insulation with air conditioning (and heating for the cooler months).
The tiny cabin is built on the same property as our B&B (note our other listings on Airbnb). A garage sits between the tiny cabin and the main house on one side. There are trees/gardens on the other three sides. Beyond the trees are other neighborhood homes and a narrow, usually quiet street on one side.
The cabin includes Wifi and an Echo Dot. A small TV monitor is available with an HDMI cable if you want to hook up your own streaming device.
Note that, it being a tiny cabin, we had room for only a 40-gallon water heater. If there are two of you staying, you may want to take quicker showers or allow a little time between showers so that the second person gets enough hot water.
We permit a third guest, including children, but please remember that this is a tiny cabin, and the sleeping configuration is one king or two twins. There is also a cot and sleeping bag on the screened porch that could be used on warmer nights.
Please review all the photos. Together, they portray the entire tiny cabin and screened porch (no fisheye lens used). The cabin is not larger than pictured.
Parking spaces are located in front of the main house. You will then need to walk around the house to the back of the property to access the tiny cabin. A barndoor style gate just next to the tiny cabin exits to a side street. It's convenient for access when walking or bicycling, but no parking is available near this gate.
Guest access
The tiny cabin sits on the property of Rockhaven B&B, a historic home originally owned by Storer College professor William A. Saunders and his wife Inez. (B&B suites are also available on Airbnb by these hosts.) You will have full access to the lush gardens on the property and outdoor seating around the property.
Other things to note
Check in time on Sundays may be delayed to 4 pm.
Remember that half of the living space is a screened-in porch. It is secure, being elevated 10+ feet off the ground and has a view of our lovely gardens. Unlike the cabin interior, however, the screens do allow some pollen and dust to enter -- and sometimes even tiny insects. Be aware that you are booking an indoor/outdoor glamping accommodation. We clean the porch between guests, but you may encounter dust/pollen and occasional cobwebs outside.
The cabin is located in a neighborhood. There may randomly be tree cutting, repair crews, construction, or other noise from neighboring properties that we have no control over.
This cabin is set up for minimal food preparation and not for cooking meals. There is no stove. We cannot guarantee sufficient amperage to the cabin's electric outlets to run any portable appliances you bring from home.
We do not have a convenient set-up for recharging electric bicycles.
If you are bicycling into town from the C&O Canal Towpath, note that this cabin is located .7 mile UPHILL from the river. Harpers Ferry is built on a mountainside. This trip up can be challenging after a long day of riding.
An Echo Dot smart device is located on top of the microwave. To deactivate it, simply pull out the AC cord.
During the winter months, once temperatures regularly drop below freezing, we have to turn off the water out on the screened porch. You'll still have access to water in the bathroom sink and shower indoors.

This suite is the only one inside the house, so there will be no need to interact with other guests.
Highlights from our reviews:
“We had a wonderful time at Lynn and Christian's place. The Inez Suite was fabulous and had everything we needed for a great weekend away. We enjoyed the cute, well-equipped and stocked kitchenette and the adorable balcony off the back (our own private sanctuary for morning coffee!). ... We've stayed in AirBnbs before and one thing we always note is the cleanliness of the place. I can honestly say this is the cleanest place we've stayed! In addition , the personal touches throughout the space were perfect and we can tell a lot of thought went into the design and layout of the suite. It takes a lot to impress us and we were thoroughly impressed. Everything was superb from the first moment I emailed Lynn to our check out day. We are so glad we selected this place for our weekend away. We hope to be back again soon!” - Aubrey
“Lynn and Christian have created a very special getaway retreat. The Inez's Sweet Retreat on the top floor (named for the wife of a famous previous owner) was like sleeping in a life sized doll's house. My wife and I really enjoyed sitting on the balcony deck overlooking the property. We snacked and watched the stars for a long time. In the late afternoon I reclined on the window seat and wrote a chapter of my next book--the next morning I wrote another chapter in the garden...." - Fred
This suite is idea for a honeymoon, and the gardens below make a lovely spot for an elopement, small (micro)wedding or vow renewal ceremony.

TO OUR GUESTS WHO ARE NIGHT OWLS: Please remember that you are staying in our home. We sleep on the second floor. We want you to enjoy your vacation, but if you like to be out past 11 p.m. and/or watch TV/talk/move furniture, etc., late at night, you might find a better fit in our private entry suite found under "Beautiful Suite, Spa Bathroom" If you just love this suite, then please be considerate of your hosts after 11 pm.
TO OUR SUMMER GUESTS: The suite is cooled by central AC and also has ceiling fans and a supplemental portable AC unit to keep you cool. However, being a third-floor space in a 1920s home, if the outside temperature reaches 90 degrees and above on a sunny afternoon, the suite is hard to keep as cool as you might experience in a newer home. We'll have suggestions for keeping the suite as cool and comfortable as possible during days of unseasonable heat.
