The Play Garden is a charming renovated country home nestled on 20 acres in the heart of Horse/Hunt country at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in historic Clarke County, Virginia. From the large veranda on top of the plateau you have the best view in the county of the bending Shenandoah River and there are up to 150 boxwoods of all varieties on the property. The house is surrounded by wineries and historic sites located an hour and 15 minutes west of Washington, DC, 25 minutes west of Middleburg/Upperville, 20 minutes east of Winchester, 10 min from Millwood, and 10 min from Berryville. The main house, which has been recently renovated, was built in 1908 and has been in our family since 1920 and maintained with loving care. The adjacent guest house is more contemporary and has the 4th bedroom.

In addition to the view there is a swimming pool and total privacy from the outside world, with basically no houses in view. The main house has three bedrooms (two kings and twin full size beds), a sleeper sofa in the den, 4 baths (two full and two half) and a large kitchen with double oven, washer/dryer, etc while the adjacent guest house has one full bath, a king bedroom and a sleeper sofa in the living area. Both are tastefully furnished, including many antiques.

My mom and I sat out on the beautiful deck every night and morning to admire the beautiful view. I cannot say enough about the cabin and the owners. They were very responsive to my questions. Situated in a rural country setting overlooking forested areas and pastures, we were able to sip coffee on the expansive deck before sunrise while listening to a rooster wake up the forest residents (i.e., birds that then flocked to the bird feeders and deer and rabbit that grazed on the lawn). The property was clean and well maintained with more than enough space for our family of six adults to spread out and read, watch TV, play pool, table tennis or darts, or just relax on the deck and enjoy the view. The property was fully furnished with the essentials (i.e., bedding, toiletries, kitchen appliances, and even coffee), and was ready for our arrival. We did bring a prepared dinner and breakfast with us so we didn't have to shop for groceries until the day after we arrived; the local grocery store is about four miles away as are several farm markets. Making our stay even more relaxing, we were able to keep our dogs out of the house while having them eat, sleep, and relax in the enclosed, dog-friendly, furnished breezeway! Our dogs especially enjoyed the opportunity to run and play in the expansive dog run, and we could grab a couple waste bags from the property-furnished supply as we headed out the door. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property, and will make plans to return next year."

Welcome to this unique mountain getaway in Bluemont, at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge mountains. The ~100 year old log cabin has been restored, yet leaves many of the original features like the open ceiling that showcases beams harvested from the mountain.

The Cabin (main room) has a good-sized addition that provides a full kitchen with new appliances, a full bathroom, a sitting room/den with a washer/dryer, and a cozy bedroom with a comfy queen bed and all linens. For added privacy, there is a separate driveway and parking space for 2 autos.

We are in eastern Clarke county, just over the Loudoun County border in Northwestern Virginia. In the heart of Virginia’s wine country, we are ~ 5 minutes from:

Here you can be as busy as you want to be, or not.

And your family? Kids are welcome; there is one queen bed in the bedroom, and there are 2 inflatable twin mattresses available. One is 13" high for smaller children; the other is 18" high when inflated. Dogs are welcome, too but please only one and less than 50 pounds. It’s very important that your pup stay on lead when outside – there are many furry friends to chase, even for the best trained dog.

The Outpost in Berryville is a four-season destination, courtesy of nearby attractions, which include antique shops, local farms, wineries and extensive hiking and biking trails.Think of this as your home away from home, we want you to feel welcome and pampered. Come explore the valley by day and warm yourself by the fireplace at night. Please note, this is the main home on our property. There are two additional separate suites attached to the house as well that may be occupied but there is no shared interior space with these suites. Guests have no access to the basement - there is a washer/dryer on the main floor.

Besides that, beautiful place, can’t wait to come back!" - "The house was absolutely stunning - very clean, well decorated, comfortable and cozy, with every amenity you can imagine. The views from the porch were so beautiful and we loved watching the sunset. Service was patchy near the house (in the house the wifi was perfect) so I recommend loading up the map to make sure you know where you’re going towards the end. Host was very responsive and accommodating. We tubed the river and went to Bear Chase Brewing and loved both activities! Went into Front Royal for groceries vs the close small shop (recommend this if you need full cooking groceries) but it was an easy drive and good store. We’d come back for sure!"

As you travel up the mountain on our Scenic Virginia Byway, you start to see the stacked stone walls from the Revolutionary War era. You’ve entered the Bear’s Den Historic District, 1900’s era homes built as summer retreats for Washingtonians escaping the summer heat. The Bluemont train carried them out of the city where they were met at the station by horse drawn wagons to take them up the mountain. Bishop’s Gate was built in 1910 as the parsonage for the bishop who ran the neighboring church. The charming cottage was restored in 2018 by the owners who live on the adjacent property. The house is thoroughly updated while staying true to its original form. Original heart pine floors, bead board walls and original furnishings offer lots of charm. All kitchen supplies (including coffee for the Keurig coffeemaker) are included. Online work or school with reliable internet. Games, puzzles, books and a record player are available.
The screened porch, complete with porch swing and rockers, is surrounded by mature boxwoods- perfect nesting sites for the songbirds that welcome you. Under the bistro lights on the back deck, a table for outside dining seats six and Adirondack chairs overlook the fire pit and barn. The rope swing in the 200 year old tulip poplar tree delights all ages.
We are situated on 20 wooded acres perfect for getting kids in touch with nature and off screens!

Escape to beautiful Bluemont, VA and enjoy our cabin nestled on 28 wooded acres. Our home backs up to the Appalachian Trail and is in close proximity to the Shenandoah River and numerous wineries and breweries such as Bear Chase Brewery, Bluemont Vineyard, Twin Oaks Winery and many more. We are also within a fifteen minute drive to outstanding restaurants such as The Ashby, Buttery at Locke Store, L' Auberge Provencale and Hunter's Head Tavern.

Our home features four bedrooms, all with queen beds, as well as two full bathrooms. The kitchen is stocked with dinnerware, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, a coffee machine and more. We generally like to unplug here, but provide a wifi hotspot in case you would like to stay connected (please note, it is mountain style wifi and not always reliable). Our living room also has a smart TV that can stream your favorite apps and a DVD player with a collection of movies.

For wildlife lovers, deer are a common sight on our property, as well as all types of birds including a pair of nesting Golden Eagles. Guests are welcome to enjoy our outdoor fire pit during their stay.

A complimentary bottle of local wine is included in the nightly rate.

With a quiet surrounding and spectacular views, Idle Hour at Chester Gap is a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle. Perfect for romantic couples or an entire family. The setting and view are gorgeous, and rather than take advantage of all the great things to do in the area, we just hung out on the porch and in the pool, and enjoyed the place. *Treat our furniture and household items gently and with care. We’ve taken extra measures to ensure there are games, puzzles, books, comfy furniture, and other niceties to make your stay pleasant. We want you to enjoy them and continue to offer them to future guests.

*Observe quiet hours outside from 9:00 PM – 8:00 AM. We love our neighbors and want them to love us and our guests. PLEASE DON'T PARK IN FRONT OF NEIGHBOR'S HOMES!!

*Be sure outdoor fires stay in the pit and are completely put out before leaving the area. There is a hose connected to the cabin that will reach the fire pit if needed. (Outside firewood should not be used for indoor fires.)

*Be extra careful on the stairs to the second floor. They are steep and uneven and extra caution must be used. Not as convenient, but there are outdoor stairs leading to the master bedroom that may be used if needed.

*Clean up after your dog. Hazel Grace loves to share her space, but she’s a bit of a neat freak and wants her yard to be kept clean and tidy. (And she’s not allowed on the furniture, so she doesn’t want any of her guests to, either!)

Please Do Not:

*Host parties or allow extra friends to spend the night.

*Smoke (anything!) There will be an additional cleaning fee of $300 if smoke is detected in the house.

*Hit your head on the low ceilings! There are several places with low ceilings/thresholds. Please become familiar with these to avoid unnecessary headaches

Other Info:

Bedroom 2 is located off the master bedroom. There are doors to separate the rooms, however, to get to the MB from inside the house, you must walk through Bedroom 2. There is a private entrance to the MB from the balcony outside.

Bedroom 4 is the original part of the house, a log cabin located directly behind the main house. It is attached to the house, however, to access the bathroom, you must leave the log cabin and walk a few steps to the main house. The bathroom is just inside the door of the main house.

The indoor fireplace in the living room and woodburning stove in the kitchen are functional. REMEMBER TO OPEN FLUE BEFORE STARTING FIRE. Additional firewood can be purchased at Safeway in Middleburg or several places in Winchester.

The electrical panel is located to the right of the refrigerator, behind the hidden wall panel.

Please empty all trash into outside bins. DO NOT remove sheets from beds but leave used beds unmade. Put used towels in the bathtubs. Place dirty dishes in dishwasher and start a cleaning cycle. Remove open food from refrigerator and freezer.

History of Home:
Our home is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Department of Interior, sections of the home are thought to have been built in 1788. The full-length front porch outlined by a dry stone wall is one of the unique characteristics of this home. Step back into history with the log cabin, stone chimney, wood beams & wood floors in the kitchen and underground quarters room. The modern Commissioner of the Revenue position was created in 1869 when VA Constitution was rewritten and VA was readmitted to the Union, following the Civil War. After two original cabin buildings were connected by additions in 1889, the home was registered with the newly reformed Commissioner of Revenue. In the 1900's, further additions were added. Unique build designs are evident, such as stairs to accommodate Victorian dresses with petticoats, and a staircase was added on the side for easier access to the upper level. Supposedly used as Headquarters for Colonel Mosby during the Civil War. Colonel John Mosby was a Confederate army cavalry battalion commander in the American Civil War. The NY Times Archives states in an article from The Baltimore American, how in 1864, the Colonel went into the home but was tricked by Corporal Simpson of the 21st New York Infantry Regiment, "leaving Col. Mosby dismounted & outwitted of his best horse, saddle, pistols and overcoat, two Yankee prisoners, and with at least one vacancy among his commissioned officers." This property was originally the current dining room & cabin, thought to be used as a headquarters and area for soldiers, supported by building descriptions in this and other articles. Peter Glascock acquired the deed for what became this village in 1786 from Kimball Hicks. The land had been part of the Northern Neck Proprietary and part of Thomas Lord Fairfax's Leeds Manor. With sweeping views of the rolling Blue Ridge foothills, Paris is a village once called Pun'kinville due to its remote location. The VA General Assembly in 1810 issued a charter for a town at the intersection of Ashby Gap Road (authorized to be paved that year, later became Route 50) and the Dumfries-Winchester Road (Route 17), though the town was platted two decades earlier. In 1819 the town was renamed to memorialize the tour of the returning Marquis de Lafayette to the US after the War of 1812. The area was surveyed by George Washington in 1769.

We ended up having to spend the second night of our stay at another hotel to insure a good nights sleep before our 12-hr drive home. We could hardly wait to arrive at what looks to be an adorable place to stay; and, we’re very quickly disappointed by the lack of attention to insure that each guest enjoys a restful and rejuvenating night’s sleep. So much thought went into decor."

Our room maintenance procedures are a little different here because our mission is to support homeless veterans through this process. When you book with us, you are asked to pay a $65 cleaning fee. This fee os used as follows:
$40 - supports homeless veterans through ARISEUnited to move veterans from homelessness to homeownership in association with the UnitedWay.
$25 - Normal cleaning fee to be reimbursed after your room is cleaned according to Check Out procedures

Located in a quiet neighborhood just a short drive from the Winchester Medical Center and Shenandoah University, this space provides a fully furnished apartment which is part of our single family home. Privacy is ensured with your own entrance and sound mitigation barriers.

The space
One bedroom with a full sized bed. Private full on-suite bathroom features a vanity. You will have a private entrance with keyless entry to your space.
The kitchenette has many appliances including a microwave, slow cooker, toaster/air fry oven, hot plate, Keurig and drip coffee, full size sink with disposal, but it does not have a range type oven or dishwasher.

Guest access
Street parking for one car is free and ample. While the neighborhood is very walkable with a bike trail and sidewalks, a car is best for this area's shopping and amenities.

Other things to note
While we have a fairly quiet household and no children or pets, you will hear us occasionally as this apartment is attached/part of our home. Occasionally our family will visit and that will create more temporary noise. My husband will occasionally be in his little wood shop which can make some machine noise. We have installed sound mitigation materials to reduce this as much as possible. Again, we have done everything we can to make this space as private and comfortable as possible.
Also, while we have no cameras on the apartment side of the home, we do have them on the outside of the front and back of the home.
Parking for one car is on the street in front of our home. We ask that you pull up to the utility box at the corner of our lot.

And Washington, DC is just over the mountain about 75 miles!
