Cool off in the creek at the local "Swimmin' hole", which ranges from 2 to 4 feet deep, or cast your line in the hopes of catching a brook trout, or other native fish. Bring your PFD, fishing rod, and water shoes. Two Kayaks are available to paddle about - or you can coordinate with your hosts for a 2+ hour kayaking trip on the creek. Extended trips may be dependent on rainfall. Additional charge will apply.

Relax in one of two hammocks in the front yard or lounge down by the Creek. Spend the cool mountain evenings roasting marshmallows by our natural rock fire pit - firewood is provided for guests. Watch fireflies dance among the trees, while you sip a glass of local wine from our two-tiered deck.

Virginia wildlife abounds - walk the trails along the creek, woodlands, and meadows of the Cabin's 30 acres. Sit quietly and you may just see a doe and her fawn, wild turkeys, or a fox or mink. Don't sit quietly and you might see a squirrel. ;) Enjoy wild edibles when in season: Wineberries, Hickory Nuts, Walnuts, and Pawpaws. Yum!

The house is on a wooded lot near the end of a quiet road. A large screened porch faces the river and is great for dining, board games or simply relaxing and listening to the sounds of nature. The porch has lighting as well as ceiling fans to keep things cool. There is additional outdoor seating on the deck and a fire pit just down the back steps. The area is home to abundant wildlife and small creatures including deer, river otter, ground hogs, a variety of birds, bear as well as many insects and reptiles so prepare to convene with nature!

The Play Garden is a charming renovated country home nestled on 20 acres in the heart of Horse/Hunt country at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in historic Clarke County, Virginia. From the large veranda on top of the plateau you have the best view in the county of the bending Shenandoah River and there are up to 150 boxwoods of all varieties on the property. The house is surrounded by wineries and historic sites located an hour and 15 minutes west of Washington, DC, 25 minutes west of Middleburg/Upperville, 20 minutes east of Winchester, 10 min from Millwood, and 10 min from Berryville. The main house, which has been recently renovated, was built in 1908 and has been in our family since 1920 and maintained with loving care. The adjacent guest house is more contemporary and has the 4th bedroom.

In addition to the view there is a swimming pool and total privacy from the outside world, with basically no houses in view. The main house has three bedrooms (two kings and twin full size beds), a sleeper sofa in the den, 4 baths (two full and two half) and a large kitchen with double oven, washer/dryer, etc while the adjacent guest house has one full bath, a king bedroom and a sleeper sofa in the living area. Both are tastefully furnished, including many antiques.

The property was clean and well maintained with more than enough space for our family of six adults to spread out and read, watch TV, play pool, table tennis or darts, or just relax on the deck and enjoy the view. The property was fully furnished with the essentials (i.e., bedding, toiletries, kitchen appliances, and even coffee), and was ready for our arrival. We did bring a prepared dinner and breakfast with us so we didn't have to shop for groceries until the day after we arrived; the local grocery store is about four miles away as are several farm markets. Making our stay even more relaxing, we were able to keep our dogs out of the house while having them eat, sleep, and relax in the enclosed, dog-friendly, furnished breezeway! Our dogs especially enjoyed the opportunity to run and play in the expansive dog run, and we could grab a couple waste bags from the property-furnished supply as we headed out the door. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property, and will make plans to return next year."

Welcome to this unique mountain getaway in Bluemont, at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge mountains. The ~100 year old log cabin has been restored, yet leaves many of the original features like the open ceiling that showcases beams harvested from the mountain.

The Cabin (main room) has a good-sized addition that provides a full kitchen with new appliances, a full bathroom, a sitting room/den with a washer/dryer, and a cozy bedroom with a comfy queen bed and all linens. For added privacy, there is a separate driveway and parking space for 2 autos.

We are in eastern Clarke county, just over the Loudoun County border in Northwestern Virginia. In the heart of Virginia’s wine country, we are ~ 5 minutes from:
- Bluemont Vineyard, Dirt Farm Brewery, Great Country Farms, Bluemont Station Brewery and Winery, and Bear Chase Brewery.
- And within a 20-minute drive, you can reach these beautiful vineyards: Breaux, Tarara, Sunset Hills, Notaviva, Veramar, Chrysalis, Delaplane and many more.

Here you can be as busy as you want to be, or not.

Service was patchy near the house (in the house the wifi was perfect) so I recommend loading up the map to make sure you know where you’re going towards the end. Host was very responsive and accommodating. We tubed the river and went to Bear Chase Brewing and loved both activities! Went into Front Royal for groceries vs the close small shop (recommend this if you need full cooking groceries) but it was an easy drive and good store. We’d come back for sure!"

As you travel up the mountain on our Scenic Virginia Byway, you start to see the stacked stone walls from the Revolutionary War era. You’ve entered the Bear’s Den Historic District, 1900’s era homes built as summer retreats for Washingtonians escaping the summer heat. The Bluemont train carried them out of the city where they were met at the station by horse drawn wagons to take them up the mountain. Bishop’s Gate was built in 1910 as the parsonage for the bishop who ran the neighboring church. The charming cottage was restored in 2018 by the owners who live on the adjacent property. The house is thoroughly updated while staying true to its original form. Original heart pine floors, bead board walls and original furnishings offer lots of charm. All kitchen supplies (including coffee for the Keurig coffeemaker) are included. Online work or school with reliable internet. Games, puzzles, books and a record player are available.
The screened porch, complete with porch swing and rockers, is surrounded by mature boxwoods- perfect nesting sites for the songbirds that welcome you. Under the bistro lights on the back deck, a table for outside dining seats six and Adirondack chairs overlook the fire pit and barn. The rope swing in the 200 year old tulip poplar tree delights all ages.
We are situated on 20 wooded acres perfect for getting kids in touch with nature and off screens!

Winter weather advisory: weather on the mountain is very unpredictable, you will need 4 wheel drive or chains. The driveway is 400 feet down the mountain and ice makes it very difficult driving.

Our home backs up to the Appalachian Trail and is in close proximity to the Shenandoah River and numerous wineries and breweries such as Bear Chase Brewery, Bluemont Vineyard, Twin Oaks Winery and many more. We are also within a fifteen minute drive to outstanding restaurants such as The Ashby, Buttery at Locke Store, L' Auberge Provencale and Hunter's Head Tavern.

Our home features four bedrooms, all with queen beds, as well as two full bathrooms. The kitchen is stocked with dinnerware, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, a coffee machine and more. We generally like to unplug here, but provide a wifi hotspot in case you would like to stay connected (please note, it is mountain style wifi and not always reliable). Our living room also has a smart TV that can stream your favorite apps and a DVD player with a collection of movies.

For wildlife lovers, deer are a common sight on our property, as well as all types of birds including a pair of nesting Golden Eagles. Guests are welcome to enjoy our outdoor fire pit during their stay.

The setting and view are gorgeous, and rather than take advantage of all the great things to do in the area, we just hung out on the porch and in the pool, and enjoyed the place. We could hardly wait to arrive at what looks to be an adorable place to stay; and, we’re very quickly disappointed by the lack of attention to insure that each guest enjoys a restful and rejuvenating night’s sleep. And despite its age and old-school charm, it was in wonderful condition and was equipped with updated bathrooms, kitchen, a/c, wifi, and laundry room, with televisions in every bedroom and in the game room. The rooms were quite comfortable and oversized, and the dining room with the extra-large farmhouse table was super nice. And it had a great outdoor patio, actually two patio areas. Very clean, and right in the heart of Strasburg, a perfect location if staying in town there and not too far from Shenendoah National Park. Street parking for one car is free and ample. While the neighborhood is very walkable with a bike trail and sidewalks, a car is best for this area's shopping and amenities.

While we have a fairly quiet household and no children or pets, you will hear us occasionally as this apartment is attached/part of our home. Occasionally our family will visit and that will create more temporary noise. My husband will occasionally be in his little wood shop which can make some machine noise. We have installed sound mitigation materials to reduce this as much as possible. Again, we have done everything we can to make this space as private and comfortable as possible.
Also, while we have no cameras on the apartment side of the home, we do have them on the outside of the front and back of the home.
Parking for one car is on the street in front of our home. We ask that you pull up to the utility box at the corner of our lot.
