Sit on the porch, build a fire by the dock, grill a steak on the barbecue. Internet, free park pass to SC State Parks to use during your stay, 30 minutes to Highlands and Cashiers, NC and 40 minutes to the 2016 and 18 College Football National Champions, Clemson Tigers.

Need something, no worries we are close by and about 2 minutes away we have a Dollar General. Several restaurants are close too. Every guest so far has been pleased, we are also listed on another provider.

** You are not allowed to bring your own personal watercraft to the lake, short term renters are not allowed to operate a motorized boat in the lake. Guest are not allowed to bring unregistered personal watercraft, we have several boats for guest to use. We have totally updated the cabin in 2021, new is everywhere! Pets are welcome, a pet fee of $50.00 applies.

Guests are welcome to utilize the 4.5 acre properties but please be aware that lake associations rules prevent us from allowing lake access. In addition, although the property feels very remote there are neighbors fairly close by, we live on the property, and our garden and bike sheds are in the same area as the tiny house (factors that can impact privacy if that is your priority).

- "The house was a great lake house, beautiful weather guaranteed we were able to enjoy the lake. We were in the area to celebrate my a HS graduation. However we had plenty of time for swimming and floating in the lake. The site states the house sleeps 12, however I believe that is assuming married couples. We found the futon in the basement was a bit short but there were two cots available and we used one in the basement. The owner was easy to contact and quick to respond. We had a running toilet and learned that would shut off the water, once we knew the problem we had no further issues with the water. The kitchen was small but had most everything we needed. We had a wonderful time swimming, paddle boarding, floating on tubes, fishing, hiking in the area and walking around the lake and the homes in the area."

Wake up and watch the morning come alive overlooking the lake from the living room and watch the sun going down each evening. Kitchen is fully equipped. The deck is perfect to grill dinner on the charcoal grill and enjoy the lake views. We have the best view on the lake.

Wireless internet included. Just use your own accounts to access the many apps such as Netflix, Amazon movies, Hulu and many more. Also many DVD are available for your use, most are for children and youth.

Yellow Branch Trail is one of our favorite regular hikes. It’s close by and takes about 2 hours in and out to the waterfall by we usually spend about 3 hours due to playing in the falls.

Across the road from Yellow Branch is Stump House Tunnel. Bring flashlight. Once in the park the tunnel is to the left and the waterfall is to the right. The tunnel is completely dark and is damp inside, but fun. Short hikes but nice waterfall and interesting tunnel to nowhere.

Also from our neighborhood, turn left onto Hwy 28, go to the bridge at the Chattoga River and hike upstream. I don’t know the name of this one but it’s nice and follows the river. Good fishing here also.

Just on the other side of Highlands NC, about a 40 minute drive is Hwy 64 and it has 3 waterfalls along it. Easy to get to all 3: Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, Bust your Butt Falls. Just a fun drive with easy little walks. If you just want an easy day you could drive through Highlands, see the waterfalls then drive to Clayton Ga and back to Mountain Rest Lake. Clayton traffic for about 2 miles through town can be a bear on the weekends in the fall. It’s a nice loop and there are restaurants in Clayton and Highlands.

Walhalla restaurants
We usually eat at Puerto Nuevo Mexican & Seafood Restaurant in Walhalla. Something on the menu for everyone. It’s nothing fancy but the food is good.

Dakota Grill, just down the hill towards Walhalla. Food is usually quite good. Closed for the winter season.

If you don’t mind driving a little farther (20 minutes) we like Paesano's Italian Restaurant in Seneca.

Great soft foam mattress and stellar water pressure. We packed plenty of food and had a great time grilling out on the deck over looking the water. We have 400 ft on a picturesque bend of the Chauga River, towards the upper end of the River s 31 mile length. This home has nice landscaping and hardscaping that adds to its vacation setting. We have an outdoor fire pit with seating. (Wood provided)

PLEASE- when you are reserving our cabin, please be accurate with your head count. It is not fair to our house cleaner when the reservation is for two, and there has obviously been 4 or more folks staying overnight. Or when our neighbors comment that they met 6 folks swimming or fishing and the reservation is only for two.

Stealing that idea for our house. The host had everything we could possibly think to need and more available for us. I forgot sunscreen and thought to look with the beach towels and there it was! - "Everything was great! We had easy communication with Marilyn and everything went as planned. It was a fairly quiet community around the lake and nearby Walhalla was a nice small town. We enjoyed swimming in the lake, fishing, and exploring many of the nearby waterfalls and hiking spots. Many of the outlets in the house do not have the ground prong available. There are some adapters in the house but plan accordingly if you have something that you need to plug in with a ground. Having the kayaks and boat available for use was very nice and kept us from having to transport ours there. Definitely recommend staying here."

Our cabin is located on the Chauga River and is very private. There is a great swimming hole to relax in or you can sit by the river, or just sit on the porch because it is right in the back yard. This is a perfect location if you are interested in river rafting (Chattooga River rafting is nearby), if you enjoy hiking, fishing or just enjoy the outdoors this is the place for you. - "Things went really good. No problems" - "Remote and quiet. Able to totally relax." - "We stayed 5 nights in April. The weather was a mix of chilly and warm so the fireplace was lovely. The view is spectacular. We enjoyed kayaking around the lake and hiking on nearby trails. I did not realize this cabin was actually attached to the owner's home. That may have bothered me if they were home, but they were not, so we had complete privacy. The cabin is located in a neighborhood so you are not totally alone, but because it is located at a dead end, you don't realize it. Nice area to walk in. The bed was comfortable. The TV did not offer much reception. All in all, we loved it and would stay again."

- "The house was spacious and well stocked with everything for cooking. We enjoyed the kayaks, paddle boat, canoe, floats and swimming from the dock/beach. The grill came in handy when a storm knocked out power right at dinner time. My only suggestion is to add a few battery operated lanterns in the event that the power stays off for an extended period. We would stay again." - "Lake life.. perfect place to relax, unplug and unwind. Just plain relaxing. If you go, save a night for a steak at Dakota's best steak we have ever had. From the moment you walk in the front door of our completely restored 1967 lakefront cottage, you can see the lake all the way across the entire room, as if you were floating on it! In the middle of your lake view is the boathouse covered deck with a walkway across the sloping green lawn down to the water!!

Enjoy hanging out with family or friends on this covered deck right on the water, with plenty of seating, tables, rugs, a grill, and a small streaming flat screen TV! Below the deck is the dock where you can fish, swim, or sun yourself...afterwards you might want to try out the 3-person canoe, followed by a night time firepit on the lawn with chairs right next to the water, with s'mores...all while you enjoy the gorgeous white lights all over the boathouse deck and walkway!!

This adorable cottage has a well appointed kitchen, livingroom, diningroom, and mudroom, plus an extra sitting area...ALL of this lakeview! Enjoy the streaming flat screen TV or watch DVDs, or enjoy books from the mudroom while you lounge in the extra sitting area. Enjoy prepping/cooking a meal in the well stocked kitchen, then have a lovely dinner in the diningroom next to the water!!

Off this main area, you'll find the King bedroom overlooking the lake, the Queen bedroom overlooking the hillside and front driveway, a large bathroom with 2 sinks, a toilet, and a shower/tub combo, as well as a stackable washer/dryer. Off the living space is also a small bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower stall. ALL sheets/towels provided!

A staircase off the small bathroom leads up to the 2 Twin loft bedroom to the right, which overlooks the living space and has lake views from the window...or you can go straight up the stairs into the gameroom that has a large picture window with a bar that overlooks the lake! In the gameroom you can enjoy the chess table, the small Foosball table, magnetic darts, cards and board games, Wii video games, or watch the flat screen streaming TV!! The gameroom also has a door out to the front driveway, with a deck worthy of the view of the front yard, and the farm across the street.

- "This property was all & more of what we expected from photos & description. It's a perfect spot with all the the coveniences of a very well kept home. It lacks nothing, nothing at all. We spent most of our time outdoors relaxing on the covered dock. We even caught a very nice largemouth bass. First time to this area and it will not be our last. Cabin was in a great location to hike many waterfalls in the area. The only improvement I would suggest is to put the WiFi information in your information book. We had to call to find where it was located. After a quick phone call we were told it was on the back of a card on side of fridge. Just needs to be more visible. Wonderful week in a wonderful cabin! We will definitely be making a trip back to Happy Place."

We are seated at just over 1800 feet of elevation within a mile and a half from the sparkling Chattooga River. For shopping and dining, Highlands, NC, Clayton, GA and Walhalla, SC are just a short drive of 30 minutes (or less) from this unique property. Relax in beautiful mountain scenery and see astonishing sunsets. We have friendly animals including dogs, a barn cat and horses, so animal lovers will enjoy this space. We do not allow any animals into the cottage. The cottage is a guest cottage so it is situated adjacent to the main residence. No fireworks please due to the animals and risk of forest fires.

There are rocking chairs on the covered porch, bar seating for dinner, a hammock and a cafe table near the fire pit…all with peaceful views of the mountains. We spent our evenings viewing the sunset and the star-studded sky scape. Plus Hank (the sweetest pup ever), Foxy, and Jack the cat will come visit. Jennifer and Patrick have created a beautiful homesite. Though the cottage is near their house, it still feels very private. They are wonderful hosts and we highly recommend this property."

Our family vacation home sits on property that has been in our family for over 65 years. We put a new home on the property in 2006 and it is up to date with beautiful bamboo plank flooring and a combination of farm house and vintage furnishings. A huge back deck over looks Lake Becky at one of the best view points on the lake. This is our home away from home so it is tastefully accented with cherished momentos of our grandparents and parents and there are family photos. We hope you will feel a part of our family. Note about accessibility of home and lake. There are 3 steps to enter the front of the house. From the deck there are 3 different staircases that lead to the back yard with at least 10 stair steps down. Then there is one additional stair case of 10 or more steps down to the lake. All staircases have hand rails, but if you are handicapped this is not recommended that you use the stairs.

In November of each year the lake is lowered for dock repairs. Since we are on the deep end of the lake we still have good lake views.

The house is not set up for young non children swimming and there are no childproof locks on cabinets. There are no barricades to the lake or life guards. We do not recommend for non swimming children.

Mountain Rest Lake is a private lake, only accessible by home owners or guests. They do not allow motorized boats, so it's very quiet and peaceful on the lake year round. There are four kayaks and a canoe, along with life jackets, at The Retreat, accessible to our guests.
There is a hot tub and plenty of outdoor seating, if you prefer to stay put and rest and relax.
