The neighborhood consists of lakefront homes, which are primarily vacation and second homes. A number of retirees live in the area. It is expected that guests will help to keep the neighborhood pleasantly quiet and peaceful. The home is only a 5-minute drive from downtown Oscoda.

1) KAYAKS: The kayaks belong to the owners and are not to be used by guests.

You will The central to beaches, lake Huron coffee shops, ice cream shops, mini bars and restaurants as well as tourist trails and monuments. There’s Iargo Springs and Lumbermans monument. Canoe and motorised scooter rental just a couple hundred feet down the street. You have a privacy fence where you can use the provided portable fire place for cooking or just a cozy evening. There’sa small grille provided with a couple chairs and more upon request.
No smoking, no pets, shoes off at the doors. There will be fees added if these are disobeyed. Sorry but some people actually need to be told to respect other people property🤷🏻‍♂️.

Lumberman’s Monument, the scenic Au Sable River, and the shores of Lake Huron with the beautiful Oscoda Beach which provides sandy beaches and water that stays shallow for quite a distance for children’s safety, picnic areas with grills, a playground, bathroom facilities, basketball hoops, a skateboard ramp, free movies on the beach, arts and crafts shows in the summer, and a scenic pier are just a quick five minute drive away. The Huron-Manistee National Forests are 9 minutes away for hiking, fishing, horseback riding, picnics, nature and bird-watching, swimming, biking, cross-country skiing, and down hill skiing. Deer and duck hunting in season are popular attraction in the area. Eagle Run Trails runs along the south shore of the Au Sable River where 7 miles of trails are available for vacationers in both the summer and winter months. The Au Sable River Canoe Marathon Race takes place the last weekend of July and is a 120 mile canoe race from Grayling to Oscoda. The YMCA campground Nissokone is on Lake Van Etten and several of our Socrates Place Resort guests have been families whose children are at the camp having fun. Mackinac Island is 117 miles from Socrates Place Resort. Also nearby are grocery stores, pharmacies, shopping and restaurants, as well as coffee shops and ice cream parlors complete your dream vacation at Socrates Place Resort on beautiful Van Etten Lake. - "We instantly felt welcomed and right at home, especially when Jim and Joy made a special point of acknowledging our anniversary. The hosts live on the premises, but they are not intrusive. They encouraged us to utilize the property and made themselves available to assist with any need or questions. Parking is very close to the cabin entrance for easy access. We had a private patio to enjoy the view of the lake & the lovely flowers. The towels and linens were very nice, and the kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, cookware, and utensils. There are two dining tables, so my wife had plenty of room to work on crafts projects. They also have a washer/dryer if you need them, as well A/C. We loved watching the ducks, sitting on the pontoon, and building a fire. The amazing Lake Huron beaches are only a 5 min drive and are open to the public. We thoroughly enjoyed Lumberman's Monument dune & trails and Largo Springs. There are quite a few restaurants in Oscoda but be aware that many stores and restaurants aren't open during the middle of the week. It was refreshing not have a long list of check-out tasks, nor threats of fees for every broken rule. Check out was 11am, which makes for a much more pleasant morning than rushing to leave by 10. We will definitely be back!"

Step into a bit of local history here - "Merk's Place", as we like to call it. With the completely renovated interior, you might never know the stories this property could tell!

Unbeknownst to us, this Sear’s Kit Home was actually built on land that was originally part of the Merkel Farm (Hill Dale Dairy, it would later be called) - my great, great grandparent's farm. They were some of the first settlers in the Oscoda area and supplied most of the town with dairy, produce, and meat from their farm. The farmhouse still stands about a 1/4 mile south of where Merk's Place is located. Many years ago, my family had sold some of their property to Oscoda Township. Some of the property was then divided to facilitate housing and other developments near downtown. Our house was built in 1942 following the changing of hands. After closing on the property in 2017, my great aunt (a Merkel herself, who spent much of her childhood on the farm) stopped by to see the house and was in shock after realizing where she was....
“Hannah, this used to be one of our pastures” she said.

Having this parcel of land back in the family meant the world to us. How cool, right? Since owning it, we have continued to restore what we could honor its features, and make the space usable for all. We designed renovation around comfort and simplicity. Now this is the perfect place to kick back and unwind - and we would love to share it with you!

Outside you will find a large, stone fire pit, plenty of chairs to sit in while relaxing by the fire, horseshoe pit, and cornhole! Firewood is available upon request. A patio set, umbrella, and grill are available during the warm months as well. Inside the home, well, you’ll find everything you could ever need in a VRBO. From the fully equipped kitchen, with all the small appliances you could need, to an LED makeup mirror, beach towels, and blankets - you name it, it’s probably there!

And the location… you can’t beat for the area. Merk’s Place is within walking distance to the Irish Pub, less than 3/4 mile to Lake Huron, downtown Oscoda, and all it has to offer. Just over a mile to the old Wurtsmith Airforce Base and Van Ettan Lake access. Snowmobile trailheads are right around the corner. Ausable River access is just up the road as well as the Cedar Lake launch/beach access. Lumberman’s monument, Iargo Springs, and Whirlpool (Ausable River Access) is only a few minutes away by car along with the Eagle Run Trail System.

Each bedroom has a brand new, Serta Tempur-Pedic Mattress, luxurious bedding, and room-darkening curtains to ensure quality sleep for our guests. Both bedrooms have closets with ample storage, hangers, and shelves if you need to tuck your belongings away. A Roku TV above the fireplace and high-speed internet/Wi-Fi for those who need to catch up on work or their favorite shows. The natural gas fireplace clicks on with ease if you need to warm up or just want to set the mood. In the dining room, you’ll find our “Coffee Until Cocktails” bar complete with a Keurig, coffee mugs, tea, sweeteners and with all sorts of barware (ps- there are cold beer mugs in the freezer!). The hall closet houses a plethora of towels, bath and beach, and in the bathroom, you’ll find a built-in Bluetooth speaker vent fan for easy listening while getting ready. The Laundry room adjacent to the bathroom is stocked with laundering supplies, an iron and more space to tuck your belongings away.

Watch the sunrise through the bay window in the morning. Take an after-dinner walk to the Irish Pub for a nightcap. Bike to Dairy Queen for ice cream and enjoy it at Oscoda Township beach. Jump on the snowmobile trailheads and have dinner at Desi’s before returning. BBQ in the backyard. Build a serene bonfire. Book a kayaking trip with Oscoda Canoe. There are 4-seasons of adventures here in Oscoda and whether you’re going out or staying in, the possibilities here are endless.

- "This home was very well appointed and located very close to town, right on the Au Sable river! We stayed here spring break/Easter weekend to do some fishing and get away and the best part of the trip was definitely this house. The weather didn't cooperate to allow our littles to get outside much (2 and 6 yo), but the home was cozy, stocked with board games, cards and puzzles, and smart TVs in both bedrooms and the living room. The kitchen was stocked with everything we could have needed, including coffee which was great when we realized we forgot to bring some. Even spices, extra cleaning and paper products, and some pantry staples which is rarely the case with vacation rentals! The hosts were super kind and loaned us some extra fishing tackle for the kids, left us some tasty treats in the house to welcome us, and even left some sweet little Easter baskets for the kids on Easter morning! I'm so thoroughly impressed with how nice this home was and we definitely would stay here again!"

Being by the water is a beautiful experience, but it may come with outdoor bugs. Pack your bug spray in the warmer months!

The Great Lakes have a midge surge each year for about a week in late spring. While annoying, they are a sign of a healthy lake and are harmless non-biters!
Guest access
You will have access to the two bedrooms, kitchen, full bathroom, and half bath with washer/dryer. There is one locked room that is not available for guests. Outside of the living space you can enjoy yourself in the studio/game room and spend some time outside in the spacious back yard with fire pit and a patio.

Other things to note:

Our home away from home is child friendly. we have a baby monitor and pack and play for your use. We also have a variety of board games and cards.

There are three heating sources available. In the living room, there is a wall furnace, the master bedroom has an electric fireplace, and the bathroom and kitchen have controls on the wall for single room heat registers. The listed bedroom upstairs is heated perfectly by the living room furnace.

We will provide 3 rolls of toilet paper per bathroom, two paper towel rolls for the kitchen, and a couple of boxes of tissue.

The private beach across the street is only for those renting the 6-8 cabins on the property so it was nice & we were the only ones using it the first couple days we were there (Mon-Tue). Even with other folks there from the cabins, there was never more than 5 people down there. The cabin was clean when we arrived. It’s very cute and functional space. The half-baths attached to each bedroom was AWESOME and having a separate shower room made it so no one was ever waiting for the bathroom. My teen daughter and her friend LOVED having pool & hot tub time. The extra amenities of the beach & pool house really made this place awesome for all of us. The only thing that I would change is having bedding and towels. I’ll admit I liked knowing my sheets are clean and it made it easier to check for things like bedbugs (there was none of course), but bringing an entire tote full of sheets, blankets, and towels made packing the car and before/after vacation harder. But considering this seems like the cleanest affordable place on the lake, it was worth it! Overall great trip. We also went kayaking on the Au Sable - best river in Michigan for kayaking imo. The kayak rental place is like 10 minutes away, so the location is perfect for any beach bum or outdoorsy person!"

The Neighborhood:
Area attractions are just a short drive to many shops, groceries, lounges and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Tawas Point Lighthouse, Lumberman's Monument and Wurtsmith Air Museum. How about a canoe trip down the AuSable River or a round of golf on many of the local golf courses? Don't forget the the Mackinaw City Casinos are only a couple of hours away!

- "We're from Georgia, and we were looking for a place that would have an eclipse rise at maximum coverage at sunrise. What better place than a lake? Well...the Great Lakes are very fickle beasts w.r.t. weather. Nevertheless, after numerous foggy mornings, we got a great view of what we wanted on the day that we needed. The cabin was perfect: directly on the beach, with few other neighbors. Clean. We are big into cooking, so this was also a great place (although bring your own cookware and stop at the store in Oscoda). Dietary needs are pretty lacking in this "neck of the woods". But, Northwoods Steakhouse in East Tawas was great with gluten-free. The cabin was a little toasty in June, but you can get a good breeze with all the windows open."

- "This location is UNBELIEVABLE, literally right on Lake Huron. We walked out all weekend to enjoy the views. Space is small and rustic…feels like staying at my grandma’s cottage but WiFi worked great and there was cable on TV if we wanted to be inside. Bike path along road that went all the way to town. We had an unseasonably cold weekend but blankets and space heaters kept us cozy. Hosts were quick to respond to our one minor issue (coffee maker wasn’t in the unit, they brought one right over). There were two bedrooms but it seems like it might have been small for more than two adults. But DH and I were cozy and really enjoyed our stay! Thanks!!!"

This property offers 3 floors, 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. The living room is beautiful with a luxurious fireplace for guest use. The kitchen has all the appliances for cooking needed. The loft offers another bed and a TV and the unfinished basement has a ping pong table and laundry machines. A great place for a getaway!

NEIGHBORHOOD:

The neighborhood consists of lake homes, which are primarily vacation and second homes. A number of retirees live in the area. It is expected that guests will help to keep the neighborhood pleasantly quiet and peaceful. The home is only a 10-minute drive from downtown Oscoda.

The entire area is famous for fishing, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and nature viewing and there are a number of different places in the area for these activities. There are also several places in the area that rent out boats, kayaks, and paddleboards for fun on the water if you don't have your own watercraft.

ACCESS:

Guests have access to the entire property excluding the garage and boat on the dock.

SPACE:

This beautiful home offers three floors, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The two bedrooms downstairs have queen size beds a closet and ceiling fan and the upstairs bedrooms has a queen size bed, a stand-up fan and access to the upstairs bathroom. There is a full bathroom downstairs with a shower and a full bathroom upstairs with a jetted bathtub. The living room is comfy and spacious with a great and extravagant fireplace for guest use. There is a dining area that seats six and a fully functional kitchen with a coffeemaker and popcorn maker. The upstairs loft offers a full size bed and a TV along with a portable fan. The unfinished basement offers a ping pong table, a loveseat, a couch, and the washer and dryer.

Moving outside there is a firepit in the front yard and Van Etten lake in the backyard. Van Etten Lake is great for swimming, kayaking or whatever other water recreational activities you'd want to do. There is also a dock but the boat on it is not for guest use.

TRANSIT:

It is highly recommended that guests have their own vehicle.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

1) NO SMOKING: NO smoking within the building.

2) CAPACITY: No more than 8 guests in total.

3) PET POLICY: Pets are not permitted at the property.

4) INDOOR FIREPLACE: The indoor fireplace is available for use by guests.

5) GARAGE: Guest use of the garage is prohibited.

6) BOAT: Guest use of the boat is prohibited.

7) NO AIR CONDITIONING: Please note that the property does NOT have air conditioning. As such, it may get warm in the house during the summer if it is warm outside.

8) NUMBER OF GUESTS: Please note that our pricing is based upon the number of guests, with pricing being higher with each additional guest that is included on the reservation. Please make certain that the correct number of guests is specified on the reservation so that the pricing is correct.

9) EARLY CHECK-IN: Our policy is to allow early check-in on the day of arrival if the property is available for check-in. We will not know until the day before arrival whether or not the property will be available for early check-in or not. You can check with our local property manager the day before arrival or on your arrival day to see if the property will be available for early check-in or not.

10) LATE CHECK-OUT: We maintain a very strict and structured cleaning schedule. As such, late check-outs are strictly prohibited.
