We rented a boat up the lake at latitude218 and he delivered the boat to us which was amazing since I was wondering how that would work with being a single parent on the trip. The owners was great with communication. There were several questions I had to them prior to and they answered almost immediately. They even reached out during our stay to make sure everything was good. The only complaint we had was not due to the house or the owners, but due to the amount of rain they have received over the course of months prior to our stay. The backyard was a sponge and definitely not something possible for outdoor activities in the backyard. But we had a boat and wanted to use that, so once you travel thru that to the dock you are set. :) One key if you travel on a boat past the reeds where it cliffs off to 15feet is where the fish are. Kids loved it!!"

We brought our blowup camping mattress ( as we didn't want to navigate the steps upstairs) I didnt mind the out house- but I did bring a camping potty for latet nights. The dogs loved to be able to swim up and down the shoreline. The hot tube was a relaxing addition to our stay. We are surrounded by wildlife out here, and lots of towering pines. The cabin is tucked into the forest with rolling hills, solid forest and tons of trails. The little lake is secluded, not developed and the kayaks/canoe/row boat are free to you to use. In June and July the lake is great to paddle, by August it is quite weedy and less desirable to paddle. After the weeds die down in the fall it is fun to paddle again. It is full of wildlife and beautiful flowers and plants all season. Swans come to visit, beavers, and all sorts of creatures. There is an additional lake much bigger than ours less than a mile down the dirt road that is wonderful to paddle as well all season long . The cabin was designed for a couple but we added a bunk bed because so many of our guests want to bring more family. There is a private campfire area landscaped in a little cove with big boulders right out the cabin's front door. The cabin has a queen bed and a bunk in the open living space. A propane fireplace sets in the center of the cabin, a full kitchen that is equipped with all eating/cooking utensils, coffee maker, toaster, blender, crock, & baking sheets, an open living space, the bathroom is custom built with a double headed shower with a built in bench, custom sink and shelves, all the linens are provided and meticulously cleaned for the kitchen, bed, & bath. We outfit the cabin with children's games, coloring, etc. , adult's games like cribbage, family conversation starters, puzzles, books & magazines & don't forget the DVD collection if you want to hole up and watch movies! Outside, the deck wraps around so you can watch the wildlife, which has included bear, turkeys, deer, tons of squirrels and rabbits, a porcupine that tried to eat our front door, birds and many others. We supply chairs for sitting and a charcoal BBQ grill. A starry sky here is amazing and can be so quiet at night it is gorgeous. A Winter stay is my favorite, as we leave snowshoes for the guests and it is the most secluded time of the year. Our guests have even brought and decorated Christmas trees! Since we are right on the snowmobile trail guests can hop right on their snowmobiles for a day on the trails too. ATVs are welcome here as well and there are epic trails 25 minutes away. 100's of feet of forest separate you from the nearest anything on the property, the cabin is private. There are 200 acres all together to explore and hundreds of acres of public land too. We operate as The Black Lantern Resort and privacy is our forte. All the acreage is very fun to explore. The lake is great for spotting wildlife and beavers since they built a hut and dammed up the lake, it is fun to fish too, not for swimming though. We have a little dock house that has life jackets and some fishing gear in it that our guests are welcome to use. A playground is there for the children too:) We encourage people to bring bicycles as well. Please, please understand that we do not accept pets, we can't do it, please do not ask. We have had costly damage done from when we used to welcome pets. We now are pet free inside the cabins and cater to those with allergies. People with allergies take this very seriously because a pets presence can physically harm them. Thank you for understanding our policy to protect our cabins and guests.

This is a unique property on pristine Bad Medicine Lake! Once the owner's cabin of 'Red Top Resort,' a three-cabin property active since the 1930's, it has been converted into a northwoods-style year-round lakehouse while retaining its rustic charm.

The house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, two fireplaces, a full kitchen, a living room, and an all-season porch. The all-season porch has a pull out couch for additional overnight guests (this is practically on the water and the best opportunity to hear the loons while you sleep!). The unfinished basement has a washer and dryer for your use, and a ping-pong table for those not-so-nice days or evening entertainment. There is also a pool table.

The kitchen includes an oven, stove, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. Other small appliances and cookware, serveware and eating utensils are also included. Guests must bring their own food and life jackets.

Bad Medicine Lake is consistently one of the clearest, cleanest lakes in Minnesota. Minnesota Monthly rated it as the best lake for swimming in 2008! It's not uncommon to catch snorkelers and even scuba divers around the lake! Watersports such as tubing, waterskiing, and even sailing are very popular.

Bad Medicine Lake is a great spot for Rainbow Trout and Walleye fishing! It's stocked with Rainbow Trout every year! A public boat launch is only 10 minutes away. Other excellent fishing lakes are easily accessible and close by.

Excellent snowmobile trails are located just off the lake! The trails are groomed, well-maintained, and connect directly to many restaurants, gas stations, and Lake Itasca State Park.

Nearby Activities

Lake Itasca State Park is an approximate 20 minute drive away. Walk across the headwaters of the Mississippi or enjoy excellent biking or hiking trails. Snowmobiling here in the winter is also a lot of fun!

Nearby towns of Park Rapids, MN and Detroit Lakes, MN offer a lot of entertainment for both kids and adults. Fun shopping and good restaurants are easy to find. Park Rapids offers 'Evergreen Fun Park' for the kids, complete with bumper boats, laser tag, mini-golf, and more. Detroit Lakes offers family-friendly activities nearly every weekend.

The cabin was originally built in 1902 just down the road. We tore it down and moved it to our property and completely restored it. There is a loft with a queen bed, a living room with a full futon, full bath and full kitchen. It can sleep up to four people, but note that it includes 1 queen bed and 1 pull out futon in the living room.

This cabin is on the second floor above a storage garage and is new in 2014.In the winter i do get my tractor out of the garage twice a day.

The "Rustic" cabin is situated near the campsites at the Black Lantern. It is a tiny log cabin that sleeps just two people and maybe a child on the loft. Complete with a queen size bed, a little loft, air conditioning, a stove/oven, pots and pans, microwave, small fridge, radio, TV and DVD for watching movies, a coffee machine, an adorable porch for setting on with chairs, a pic-nic table, firepit with a cooking grate and a culligan machine for drinking water. THE CATCH IS: It does not have a bathroom or indoor plumbing, but is located really close to a bathroom and shower house . The cabin also has its own outhouse next to the cabin, a big wash basin for dishes and a spigot outside for hooking up sprinklers for the kiddos and filling water jugs to use inside the cabin. The Culligan machine inside the cabin for drinking and cooking water makes the “no plumbing” part a breeze . You have access to the Resort's trails, playground, little fishing lake and the free paddled boats. Our lake is small, but a host to all sorts of wildlife , it is wonderful to paddle in spring and fall, except for it gets really weedy in the dead of summer . But it’s still beautiful to watch wildlife on . Between old downtown Bemidji and Itasca State Park both are a 25 minute drive. Park in the driveway. A garage stall MAY be available but not guaranteed. Ask us about this. Walk, bike or snowmobile on the famous Paul Bunyan State Trail which you have private access to at the beginning of the driveway. This beautiful historic trail is the longest state trail in MN and connects with the Heartland State Trail, Blue Ox Trail, and Lake Bemidji State Park.

This is a unique property, which is part of our fourth-generation family-owned farm, it is the newest addition to our operation. The cabin is newly remodeled, it was built in the late 1990's. The exterior walls are an 8 in square cut log. We have updated all rooms on the main level. This cabin has the feel of a old rustic shack but has all the luxury of a new home, Currently it is a beautiful 2 bedroom cabin with 1 bath. It is nestled on 317 acres with the nearest neighbor a 1/2 mile away.
The cabin was originally going to be our family guest house, after a few of our relatives and friends have stayed. They told us we should open it up and share it to other people. We have updated the kitchen with all new cabinets and appliances. The bedrooms have 40" smart tv's with new beds that are a luxurious 13 inch foam mattresses . Even though it feels like you're out in the middle of nowhere we have fiber internet service to the cabin. There are several wildlife ponds on the property, we also have trails along the perimeter and threw out the property for hiking or walking. The cabin is nestled in the woods a half a mile down a gravel road and then an eighth of a mile up the private driveway. The propriety joins our family farm operation which is a total of 1262 acres we also have 120 acres of state land that a joins the main farm. Different times of the year we will have our cattle heard grassing on this property as well.

The hot summer nights are kept at bay with a Modern central air conditioning units in each room call SUP. There are also ceiling fans in each room to assist in the summer.

As for the kitchen in the vacation rental, it is equipped with all of the modern conveniences of a personal home. All you have to bring is the food you and your family will be preparing.

Wald is dog friendly! The pet fee is $50 nonrefundable pet fee per dog (maximum of 2 dogs). Please communicate at booking if you plan to bring a pet. We ask that dogs do not go on the bed or floor cushion out of respect to those with allergies. Your dog must be crated if left alone in the cabin. Bring their dog bed and kennel (must be kenneled if left alone in the cabin). The dog must be on a 6ft leash at all times while on the property. Please also bring a towel to wipe their paws before entering the Tiny Cabin. You will be charged for any pet damages. We want to keep the Tiny Cabin pet friendly so please be mindful to only bring your dog if they are well behaved.
