The two storey stone cottage was very clean with a well equipped kitchen, a plunge pool we used daily, air conditioning and lovely outdoor covered balcony to eat breakfast and admire the sweeping Umbria Valley. There is a 10 to 15 minute drive down the mountain to the old Spello town, but you must have a car, preferably small to negotiate the narrow roads and streets. Our host, Stefano was delightful, very responsive to our needs via WhatsApp and an expert at using Google translate. Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

The property is over 500 years old, restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Originally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio Mountain.

The apartment is elegantly furnished with antique-style and rustic furnishings, and has a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking pleasure. There is also a fireplace. The apartment we enjoyed was well equipped and clean, with lots of room for 2 people." - "We were lucky enough to stay here for 10 nights in September, and we loved both the accommodation and the location. The accommodation itself (flat 1 Augustus) is a very spacious apartment on 2 levels, with an entrance hall, toilet, kitchen, living room and then on an upper floor a bedroom and bathroom. The rooms were all spacious, and, as the flat is part of a historic building, they were really characterful with lots of exposed stonework. That said, they were well-furnished and surprisingly light and airy considering the age of the building. The apartment has a small balcony which is accessible from outside and from the kitchen, and which was big enough for a seat and a table and 2 chairs, so bigger than we expected and lovely to sit out at. There was air con but we didn't need it, as we found the rooms cool enough with the use of the fan in the kitchen and bedroom. The WiFi was very fast which is a bonus! The flat is obviously where the owner stays when she visits, as there is her stuff in some of the cupboards. The location of the apartment is fantastic, right in the historic heart of Spello, which is an absolutely lovely medieval town in a great location in central Umbria. The location in the town was quiet yet only a few minutes’ walk into the town centre. There are lots of really great restaurants in the town: we ate at 6 different ones and there were others we didn't try. All were good and none were expensive. The owner Gina was very easy to contact, and the local property manager Nadia was also very pleasant and available on WhatsApp, so communication was fine although we didn't need any help during our stay. The town and the location are simply unbeatable, and the accommodation is quality. Really very very good. If we were to criticise anything we would say that (a) the accommodation is a walk uphill from the nearest car park, so not suitable for anyone with mobility problems (b) the mozzies are murderous but luckily there are insect screens in the flat (c) the flat does suffer a bit from road noise as the main dual carriageway road between Spoleto and Assissi passes at the bottom of the hill (the town is on a hill) and some traffic noise does drift up, so it is not silent when sitting outside. That said, the road makes the location great for accessing the rest of Umbria and even Tuscany. There is a large garden but we hardly used it, as we found the balcony enough for our needs. So, overall, spellbinding! We loved it"

The large terrace, 50 square meters, has east facing views of the countryside with valley, hills and montains. Very equiped kitchen with oven, microwave oven, dishwasher, coffe machine, toaster, etc. Antique fornitures, queen-size bed, additional bed, air conditioned, safety-deposit box, TV, radio. - "This apartment is fabulous, full of charm and character and a pleasure to holiday in! The views are stunning from the private patio, and it’s just a short walk from the village centre. Reasonably well equipped, though the oven was not working, there was a hob and microwave. The bathroom is tiny with 2 very deep steps up to it, useful to know if anyone has mobility issues. My husband managed but it was not easy. The railway station and supermarket are about a 15 minute walk away, downhill going, uphill coming back! Roberto, the owner was great, he picked us up from the station and took us back at the end of the stay. If we return to Spello we will definitely stay in this gem of an apartment again! Loved it!"

Our timing had to change for both our arrival (due to a train strike) and our departure (due to the Giro d’Italia) and she went above and beyond to work with us. Would we stay here again? Barbara's homeis something else and the description and or pictures don't do it justice. If you are afraid of heights, better close you eyes on the way up. I should have done a little more research about routes to use to reach the location as it was a little tricky with a large van. Once I stopped using Waze which took us on the local, small side roads, all was well. It is actually very easy to access from the old city of Spello which was the focus of our stay at this point and where more of our group stayed. We visited Assisi and local wineries. All was great. I use VRBO frequently and all over The US and Europe. I highly recommend SubasioRelax and would defitnitely stay here again."

Evening meal available on some days, was very nice, good value at 20 euros each for 4 courses and wine. would highly recommend. Only one minor point please provide full fat yoghurts the low fat ones are tasteless and full of sugar. Would highly recommend. "
