The two storey stone cottage was very clean with a well equipped kitchen, a plunge pool we used daily, air conditioning and lovely outdoor covered balcony to eat breakfast and admire the sweeping Umbria Valley. There is a 10 to 15 minute drive down the mountain to the old Spello town, but you must have a car, preferably small to negotiate the narrow roads and streets. Our host, Stefano was delightful, very responsive to our needs via WhatsApp and an expert at using Google translate. Barbara's homeis something else and the description and or pictures don't do it justice. If you are afraid of heights, better close you eyes on the way up. It is actually very easy to access from the old city of Spello which was the focus of our stay at this point and where more of our group stayed. We visited Assisi and local wineries. All was great. I use VRBO frequently and all over The US and Europe. I highly recommend SubasioRelax and would defitnitely stay here again."

- "Having just returned from two weeks in this beautiful property we can highly recommend it! The Villa is very authentic (steep stone stairs) but done up with such taste and design. The bedrooms all have en-suites and air conditioning (we were there during a heatwave so this was very welcome). The bedroom downstairs with two single beds is the only room with a smart TV so has Netflix/Disney etc...the lounge does not have a TV but this didn't bother us at all. Outside there are many different areas to choose to sit. The pool is a lovely size with a perfect shallow area and large steps which are perfect to sit on to keep cool (however surrounded by grass, not patio). We were bitten to bits but that is just indicative of the area not fair to hold it against the property but Roberta leaves boxes of sprays and we purchased citronella candles which we felt helped. We used the wood burning Italian style BBQ which was fun and also the fire pit.There is a brilliant laundry room with a washer/dryer and ironing board in. Recycling is important and we wish we had known before our first shop about the glass water bottle recycling option (you put €6 in a tin in the laundry for a tray of water in glass bottles and you replace the bottles - also an option of sparkling) as we wouldn't have bought all the plastic bottles. Roberta and Max were perfect hosts they live next door but you would never know apart from the treats! Stay in this villa it's amazing!"

Summary:
Villa Giardino is a beautiful villa in Spello in Umbria. The villa is set within the town's narrow cobbled streets, nestled against the town walls and it enjoys incredible west-facing views of the valley, farms and hills. Its central location within the town means guests can walk to a number of restaurants and yet it has the feel of being in the heart of rural Umbria.

The Space:
Inside, this villa in Spello is exceptionally stylish, furnished with pieces from around the world which have been collected by the owner on her extensive travels. Her attention to detail and eclectic mix of styles has imbued the property with a character and warmth that is rarely found in a holiday home. The overall feel is fresh and contemporary.

The property has 3 bedrooms. The first was inspired by the deep blues of the South of Italy and is adorned with rich textiles, paired with cool white walls and an old cotto floor. A king size bed provides the perfect nights sleep whilst the ensuite bathroom has a wonderful double shower, stone sink and toilet. It enjoys beautiful views on to the garden.

The second bedroom also leads directly onto the garden. Again, it has a comfortable king size bed but this time draws very different inspiration from the owners' travels in Laos, Cambodia, Burma and India. The warm saffron yellow and green tones of the room work in harmony with the souvenirs that it houses. Within the room is a fully equipped shower room.

The master bedroom in this villa in Spello is situated on the first floor of the villa and again enjoys wonderful views onto the garden and over the Umbrian hills. The colours of the Moroccan rug harmonise with the red king size bed from Minotti, and the curtains are made from fine Indian cotton. Whilst many of the items are sourced from elsewhere in the world, the room actually has a Chinese feel to it. An original painting from a French painter purchased in Thailand adds a focal point. The ensuite bathroom again has the luxury of his and her showers. It is modern, simple and chic.

There is an extra WC at the top of the stairs.

The kitchen in this villa in Spello is light and airy open space. It is practical and unfussy but at the same time both pretty and perfectly furnished. On the right of the room there is the kitchen and dining area with a table seating 6 to 8. To the left, there is a comfortable sofa with old linen and beautiful pillows sourced from Istanbul whilst opposite there is a flat screen television concealed behind an antique door. The floors are a soft grey resin and the accent colour is green. It is chic, cheerful and modern. The kitchen is superbly equipped with everything a chef could possibly need to either create their dishes or serve them. There is a contemporary black SMEG fridge which adds to the character and charm of this wonderful space.

Outside, there is a lush private garden at this villa in Spello, scented with rosemary, sage, verbena, thyme and lavender. A private pool allows guests to enjoy a relaxing dip when the heat gets too much. Beautiful fig and cherry trees provide welcome shade as well as an abundance of delicious fruit, whilst lanterns hanging in the trees light the garden at night.

The Umbrian climate is excellent with long, hot Summers and mild Spring and Autumn seasons and this garden provides a tranquil oasis of calm to enjoy whatever the time of year. The garden has been planted with roses, olives and cypress but has also been designed to provide maximum space for guests, whether they are wanting to recline in the shade or to spend an evening over a meal with friends and family.

An outdoor kitchen has been created, allowing guests to make the most of their al fresco dining experience. Guests will be able to enjoy the incredible views that overlook the Chiona valley. It really is the perfect outdoor setting.

The Neighborhood:
Spello itself is an enchanting hillisde town. It has a peacefulness and elegance about it that you can't fail to fall in love with, whilst the town's restaurants are famed for their superb cuisine and excellent wines. It also makes an excellent base from which to explore the wider area. Orvieto, Todi, Citta di Castello, Gubbio and Spoleto are all within easy reach along with the highly praised wine producing region of Montefalco. There are numerous activities to enjoy too including horse riding, hiking, cycling, rafting and sailing as well as cross-country skiing in the Winter, making it an ideal holiday destination all year round.

Please note that, effective 1 June 2023, the municipality of Spello has imposed a city tax of 2.50 euros per person per night. This must be paid locally on arrival in cash.

Getting Around:
A car is not essential as it is possible to reach shops and restaurants on foot. However, for those coming by car, there is not a parking space on site as the streets are narrow and cobbled and too small for vehicles. But there is a free public car park just a couple of minutes walk away.

A naturally evolving oasis, mostly obscured by lily pods, it spawns frogs, toads, fish, newts, lizards and water snakes (they don’t stray!). Submit to its beauty and reach nirvana. I could meditate for hours in this magical spot.

Separated by a driveway, and also fringed by a hedge, a large children’s adventure park perfects the family experience. Liberally equipped with a slide, climbing frame, swings, a bouncy horse and various other playthings, this area was specifically designed to stimulate your children’s imagination for hours on end!

The owners tend to the pool and grounds at times to suit you, usually very early in the morning. You need never see them unless you want to.

The huge car park IS FOR YOUR EXCLUSIVE USE. Except if a Comune inspector visits to check the monument and/or the organic plantations that surround this property. Last year, two such inspections took place.

The owners have their own private parking spaces at the back of their villa.

The owners do NOT use the pool, the grounds + gardens,, the meditation zone, the children’s adventure park or the car park when guests are residing in SPELLO BY THE POOL.

Both villas are sufficiently big to permit both the guests and the owners total privacy.

Summary:
Villa Buonanotte Barbanera is an absolutely stunning, unique, luxury Umbria villa with pool in the beautiful town of Spello. Created in part from a 14th century church, the villa is nestled against the town walls and enjoys incredible west-facing views of the valley, farms and hills. Its central location within the town means guests can walk to a number of restaurants and yet its peaceful location and panoramic views means that it has the feel of being in the middle of the countryside.

The Space:
Inside, this Umbria villa with pool is exceptionally stylish, furnished with pieces from around the world which have been collected by the owner on her extensive travels. Her attention to detail and eclectic mix of styles has imbued the property with a character and warmth that is rarely found in a holiday home.

Guests enter the property into the living and dining area. Simply but stylishly decorated with a large cane sofa and bright Moroccan rug, it is a welcoming and comfortable space. An expanding rosewood dining table with raw silk-covered chairs seats up to 10 people. Behind the table, an old Chinese cupboard houses candles, cards and games, whilst a rustic wall cupboard hides a television with satellite channels. A set of doors opens out on to the terrace.

Adjacent to this room is the kitchen of this Umbria villa with pool, furnished in a contemporary, shabby chic style inspired by the owners travels in France and Sweden. This is an exceptionally well equipped kitchen. Everything is provided from aprons to tablecloths and from Alessi pans to fine cutlery and crockery. There is a mighty La Cornue range cooker and all the utensils any serious cook would need are in ample supply, both for preparation and for serving and dining.

Also on this floor is the master bedroom, an extremely spacious room overlooking the garden. Adjacent to the bedroom is the all-white, marble-lined bathroom as well as a walk-in storage and hanging space. The room boasts a king-size bed, ancient fireplace and a grand library piece from a former family home, full of books and magazines. This is in turn flanked by a pair of antique, tapestry chairs. A traditional fratino table and director's chair provide the ideal place to write one's postcards or send that email back to family and friends.

Stairs lead from the living area of this Umbria villa with pool to a large mezzanine space or 'studio'. This can be used either as an extra bedroom area or additional living area. On one wall is an original fresco whilst on the other there is a feature window looking down onto the room below. The space was conceived as a space to listen to music. However, it does have a full size sofa bed. And with it's own bathroom at the foot of the stairs, it does make a potential 4th sleeping area.

Set above the master bedroom is another double bedroom, this time inspired by the spirit of India and Morrocco. Enjoying the same dazzling views as the master bedroom below it, the room is set on 2 levels. On the lower level is an Indian charpoy daybed whilst on the upper level there is a low double bed, covered with a beautiful Indian marriage quilt. An exotic wall decoration takes the place of a traditional headboard. The cool, limed oak floors and white walls contrast beautifully with the warm colours and rich textiles. An ensuite bathroom boasts a large power shower, whilst the room also has plenty of storage.

The final bedroom of this Umbria villa with pool enjoys its own independent entrance from the garden offering a romantic, secluded retreat. Furnished with a simply metal bed, it is decorated with beautiful reds and greens, complete with original artworks from Marrakesh. There is an ensuite bathroom with shower.

Built from pink-tinted stone work, up to a metre thick in places, the villa stays cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

Outside, there is a covered patio area, set beneath the arches of the original church. Equipped with comfortable chairs and table, and enjoying the incredible views, it's the perfect outdoor seating and dining area. A gentle flight of steps leads guests from here to the garden and pool area. Here, lush green lawns are tended daily and provide ample space for sunbathing or entertaining. Planted with roses, olives and cypress, the garden is a quiet oasis.

Guests have sole use of the villa, gardens and pool.

The Neighborhood:
Spello is a beautiful town situated in the green heart of Umbria. Spello has a peacefulness and elegance about it that you can't fail to fall in love with, whilst the town's restaurants are famed for their superb cuisine and excellent wines.

It also makes an excellent base from which to explore the wider area. Orvieto, Todi, Citta di Castello, Gubbio and Spoleto are all within easy reach along with the highly praised wine producing region of Montefalco. There are numerous activities to enjoy too including horse riding, hiking, cycling, rafting and sailing as well as cross-country skiing in the Winter, making it an ideal holiday destination all year round.

Getting Around:
A car is not necessary as you can walk to shops and restaurants. However for those bringing a car, a parking permit is provided for on street parking a short walk from the villa.
