The original farmhouse was previously owned by David Lean, the famous film director; who fell in love with the breathtaking views but never started the restoration work. The house was left deserted until 1993 when it was acquired by the Ferrucci family who totally restored and modernised it whilst retaining its character and many authentic features.

Tuscany lost corner:
During your stay at the Villa, you have the opportunity to do what we call a mountain villages tour.It’s essentially another way of getting off the beaten track! Just like in a safari, we are going to drive around our district to explore small hamlets, villages, historical landmarks, castle ruins and artistic jewels such as the “pievi” that normally get unnoticed by travelers taking “different” roads.

We can also drive through off-road trails to admire the local flora and fauna and visit the breathtaking canyon of ‘Orrido Di Botri’ where it is possible to have the rare opportunity to see the eagle in its natural habitat. You can access the canyon overcoming big rocks partly on foot or by wading through chest high deep pools of crystal water for a couple of hours to complete the whole track. Helmets will be provided at the entrance. It is also possible to admire the “Orrido” from above, hiking on a one hour and half loop trail
If it’s very hot we may end up for a super refreshing swim in the pools of the Lima creek and a enjoy a good ice-cream at the end of the tour.
Lunch breaks included .This tour almost takes the whole day, say from 9,30 am to 6pm.

- "So much to say about our stay at Villa Lean. It was a dream come true to spend a week with Monica and Giovanni and the wonderful authentic spirit that is their way of being. The Villa itself is like something of the old way of family living, rustic and charming in every way . Monica is a wonderful cook and though she was suffering from the extreme heat she still cooked 2 amazing meals for our family of 10 including 4 hungry boys 17-20 and arranged a table for us at lovely nearby restaurant one evening . The pool was a godsend and well used in the heat. 3 rambunctious adorable puppies provided much entertainment with their antics! The highlight (for all but 3 of us who went to bike the Lucca Wall) was the mountain village excursion that Giovanni guided in his Land Rover one day - it was adventurous and amazing according to the participants !!! We would be remiss if we did not mention Monica’s fabulous goat cheeses! They became a daily staple beyond what we were treated to at dinners. Our 4/5 bedroom, south-facing Tuscan farmhouse offers breathtaking views of the Apuan Alps and the hilltop town of Sommocolonia. With no immediate neighbours, Montate is accessed via a 400m private road, ensuring complete privacy and tranquillity. There is a private heated saltwater pool, various outdoor eating areas and barbecue, and a wonderful sun deck from where you can enjoy the views. Inside the house facilities include 4 bedrooms - 2 kingsize, 1 twin and 1 bunk bed room, 2 bathrooms - one with shower, one bath/shower. Fully fitted kitchen/diner with dishwasher, oven and fridge. Barga offers several excellent restaurant/bar options in addition to supermarket and other amenities and a local taxi service is available for those who would prefer not to drive.

A little about the area
Costola is situated on the 'sunny side' of the Garfagnana valley within the comune of Fosciandora, which is an area which has retained its olde worlde charm due to the fact there is only one road leading both into and out of the zone… The comune itself has 600 inhabitants spread between 6 villages and various hamlets.
The property is privately situated in the smallest of these ancient peaceful villages, and the one that arguably has the best views of all!
Despite the very quiet and dramatic location, the Villa is only a 5 minute drive from a Pizzeria, and 5 mins from a restaurant too.

10 mins - the local market town of Castelnuovo - shops, bars, restaurants, train station, virbrant Thursday morning market .
15/20 min drive is Barga the beautiful mediaeval town, with its wonderful architecture, Duomo, very good restaurants, markets under the stars and regular free music.
50 mins - The fully walled mediaeval city of Lucca - try cycling around the walls, meandering in shady narrow streets and people watching in the Grand Piazzas while enjoying a drink or a gelato! Or, there are often outdoor concerts with big named performers, and if you prefer nightly opera recitals.
1 hr 15 mins - Pisa with its leaning tower and the airport
40 mins - the famous Wind Caves and also the Canyoning park, where one can jump down waterfalls into beautiful rivers.
1 hr 20 mins - The Versilian coast is a good day trip reached either via Lucca or more spectacularly by crossing through the Apuan Alps.
25 mins - the local Fortress at Verrucole, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. This lone-standing villa of 180 m² (1960 ft²) was renovated to the highest standards. Situated among organic olive groves on the hills above the city of Camaiore, you will enjoy an open view across the valley to the sea. The paved road leading to the house narrows in the last kilometre.Our other villa is called Casa Greta (# 750198) and stands at 50m.
The ground floor is comprised of the living room with open fireplace, 50" flatscreen SmartTV and DVD player, wireless high speed DSL connection, SONOS sound system , a professionally-equipped kitchen with dining table. Attached is the veranda with a sofa bed and a pull-out bed, en suitebathroom with shower and laundry room with washer and dryer. A covered pergola accommodates dining for up to 10 people. In addition, a gas BBQ and wooden grill at 5m from the house.
The upstairs consists of two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, one with a shower and one with shower and bathtub with whirlpool. Fifteen meters from the main house is the dependance/pool house of 30m² ( 350 ft² ) with a double bedroom, en suite bathroom with shower, kitchenette and trellised patio.
The pool (12m x 4m) has a saline filtering system.
The property is fenced.
There is an EV wall box on the outside wall near the parking .
Our garden and olive groves are free of herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers .
We produce part of the electricity we need with our own photovoltaic system . Because our water is a precious commodity we
ask of our guests to make every effort to conserve.
Arrival time is on Saturday between 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Checkout time is 10:00 a.m.

available approximately 2 km from the property.

WINTER MONTHS:
Casa Teresa is ideal for longer stays during the winter season. In-floor
heating throughout the house makes for a cozy and comfortable stay. A fireplace
stocked with firewood and a southwest orientation will add extra warmth for
romantic sunsets.

Casa Mennone is a magnificent holiday villa in an elevated, quiet, rural location near Lucca, Tuscany, with spectacular views across the plain and sun from dawn to dusk.

For centuries the farmers who lived here grew corn, grapes and olives on the surrounding land, for local aristocratic families.

The expansive garden has a circular saltwater pool, sun loungers, large children’s play area, ample shade, spa hot tub, barbecue and wood fired pizza oven.

In the area parking is free: normally you can park in front of the house and 250m away you can find a large free parking.
