Farmhouse Villa Lean is a beautiful, private homestead nestled in the hills of Tuscany’s wine country above the ancient walled village of Lucca . The original farmhouse was previously owned by David Lean, the famous film director; who fell in love with the breathtaking views but never started the restoration work. The house was left deserted until 1993 when it was acquired by the Ferrucci family who totally restored and modernised it whilst retaining its character and many authentic features.

As well as being an excellent cook, Monica also has a wealth of local knowledge that she is always willing to share to ensure you make the most of your visit.

Tuscany lost corner:
During your stay at the Villa, you have the opportunity to do what we call a mountain villages tour.It’s essentially another way of getting off the beaten track! Just like in a safari, we are going to drive around our district to explore small hamlets, villages, historical landmarks, castle ruins and artistic jewels such as the “pievi” that normally get unnoticed by travelers taking “different” roads.

We can also drive through off-road trails to admire the local flora and fauna and visit the breathtaking canyon of ‘Orrido Di Botri’ where it is possible to have the rare opportunity to see the eagle in its natural habitat. You can access the canyon overcoming big rocks partly on foot or by wading through chest high deep pools of crystal water for a couple of hours to complete the whole track. Helmets will be provided at the entrance. It is also possible to admire the “Orrido” from above, hiking on a one hour and half loop trail
If it’s very hot we may end up for a super refreshing swim in the pools of the Lima creek and a enjoy a good ice-cream at the end of the tour.
Lunch breaks included .This tour almost takes the whole day, say from 9,30 am to 6pm.

- "So much to say about our stay at Villa Lean. It was a dream come true to spend a week with Monica and Giovanni and the wonderful authentic spirit that is their way of being. The Villa itself is like something of the old way of family living, rustic and charming in every way . Monica is a wonderful cook and though she was suffering from the extreme heat she still cooked 2 amazing meals for our family of 10 including 4 hungry boys 17-20 and arranged a table for us at lovely nearby restaurant one evening . The pool was a godsend and well used in the heat. 3 rambunctious adorable puppies provided much entertainment with their antics! The highlight (for all but 3 of us who went to bike the Lucca Wall) was the mountain village excursion that Giovanni guided in his Land Rover one day - it was adventurous and amazing according to the participants !!! We would be remiss if we did not mention Monica’s fabulous goat cheeses! They became a daily staple beyond what we were treated to at dinners. Our 4/5 bedroom, south-facing Tuscan farmhouse offers breathtaking views of the Apuan Alps and the hilltop town of Sommocolonia. With no immediate neighbours, Montate is accessed via a 400m private road, ensuring complete privacy and tranquillity. There is a private heated saltwater pool, various outdoor eating areas and barbecue, and a wonderful sun deck from where you can enjoy the views. Barga offers several excellent restaurant/bar options in addition to supermarket and other amenities and a local taxi service is available for those who would prefer not to drive.

A little about the area
Costola is situated on the 'sunny side' of the Garfagnana valley within the comune of Fosciandora, which is an area which has retained its olde worlde charm due to the fact there is only one road leading both into and out of the zone… The comune itself has 600 inhabitants spread between 6 villages and various hamlets.
The property is privately situated in the smallest of these ancient peaceful villages, and the one that arguably has the best views of all!
Despite the very quiet and dramatic location, the Villa is only a 5 minute drive from a Pizzeria, and 5 mins from a restaurant too.

10 mins - the local market town of Castelnuovo - shops, bars, restaurants, train station, virbrant Thursday morning market .
15/20 min drive is Barga the beautiful mediaeval town, with its wonderful architecture, Duomo, very good restaurants, markets under the stars and regular free music.
50 mins - The fully walled mediaeval city of Lucca - try cycling around the walls, meandering in shady narrow streets and people watching in the Grand Piazzas while enjoying a drink or a gelato! Or, there are often outdoor concerts with big named performers, and if you prefer nightly opera recitals.
1 hr 15 mins - Pisa with its leaning tower and the airport
40 mins - the famous Wind Caves and also the Canyoning park, where one can jump down waterfalls into beautiful rivers.
1 hr 20 mins - The Versilian coast is a good day trip reached either via Lucca or more spectacularly by crossing through the Apuan Alps.
25 mins - the local Fortress at Verrucole, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. This lone-standing villa of 180 m² (1960 ft²) was renovated to the highest standards. Situated among organic olive groves on the hills above the city of Camaiore, you will enjoy an open view across the valley to the sea. The paved road leading to the house narrows in the last kilometre.Our other villa is called Casa Greta (# 750198) and stands at 50m.
The ground floor is comprised of the living room with open fireplace, 50" flatscreen SmartTV and DVD player, wireless high speed DSL connection, SONOS sound system , a professionally-equipped kitchen with dining table. Attached is the veranda with a sofa bed and a pull-out bed, en suitebathroom with shower and laundry room with washer and dryer. A covered pergola accommodates dining for up to 10 people. In addition, a gas BBQ and wooden grill at 5m from the house.
The upstairs consists of two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, one with a shower and one with shower and bathtub with whirlpool. Fifteen meters from the main house is the dependance/pool house of 30m² ( 350 ft² ) with a double bedroom, en suite bathroom with shower, kitchenette and trellised patio.

For centuries the farmers who lived here grew corn, grapes and olives on the surrounding land, for local aristocratic families.

A little about the area:
Nicciano is situated in the heart of the Garfagnana, surrounded by lush green countryside and stunning mountain scenery is what real rural Italy is all about.
The mediaeval village is a 5 minute walk way and there is a bar/basic shop for essentials. Just above the village is a little hamlet (10 minute walk cross country) which has a fantastic little family run restaurant where you can dine al fresco on exquisitely cooked home made and home grown food. This restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday in high season and Friday to Sunday other times.
There is also a good pizzeria which is a 15/20 min walk away (or a couple of minutes by car).

The local village of Piazza Al Serchio with its bars, couple of restaurants, supermarket, train station, river and Tuesday morning market when the village comes alive, is say 3 minutes away by car.
The views from this extremely peaceful property are magnificent - the house overlooks the green and fertile Serchio valley, with views of the Apuane and Appenine Alps.
This really is the perfect location - an ideal place to unwind deep in the countryside, yet close enough to all local amenities, and a convenient base for exploring by car or train.

Grotta del Vento – the amazing wind caves – well worth a visit – fantastic tour. Why not stop off a the old monastery for a wild trout lunch on the way back? 1 hr

Romantic, 2 bed, 2 bath restored barn, with beamed ceilings and traditional flooring throughout giving a feeling of yesteryear, but with all modern comforts and amenities.

.The garden is well kept, with lovely BBQ area, various al fresco dining options, and private pool.
There are great uninterrupted views from the house, with the hills and mountains making a dramatic backdrop.
Whilst set in a totally unspoilt area, there is a village 2km either side of the house each of which has a good restaurant. Other villages with fuller facilities are around a 10 minute drive away.
The large village of Camporgiano is around 10 mins and has all facilities including a train station for stress free exploring and a small Monday morning market. The market town of Castelnuovo is a 20 mins or so drive from the house.
Pisa airport is around a 90 minutes or so drive and Genoa is 2 hrs 15 mins.

The Contented Tuscan is a very ancient stone villa on two levels brimming with character and restored with total respect for its rustic simplicity. All rooms are furnished to excellent standards, in an elegant country style with old terracotta floors and original chestnut beamed ceilings. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a beautiful fireplace, log burning stove and dining/sitting room. This two-bedroom villa sleeps up to four people. The bedrooms each with queen sized beds and both have en-suite bathrooms. Both bedrooms are prepared with a double bed, but one bedroom can also be set up with two separate beds upon request prior to your arrival.

The villa is located in Guzzano a mountain village 4km above the pretty spa town of Bagni di Lucca. Many of the famous Tuscan landmarks are within striking distance. Previous guests have enjoyed day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Cinque Terra, Viareggio, Siena and San Gimignano.

The property is located in a mountainous region of Tuscany. Our guests can park directly outside the villa or in an area some 50 meters from the house and should not pose any issues. The owners live below the rental space and will be on call should you need any assistance.

The surrounding area is perfect if you are a keen walker or mountain biker. You can enjoy bird watching, fishing, painting and photography, as well as skiing and snowboarding. We are the first village above the town, walking down will take around 30-40 minutes and you can always hop on the local bus to return to the village.

Bagni di Lucca has a number of super restaurants, serving hearty Tuscan fare. You can also enjoy a post supper flutter at the recently re-opened casino.

You'll find a public swimming pool, tennis courts and thermal baths, along with banks; supermarkets and on Wednesday and Saturday mornings there is a traditional Tuscan market.

The Agriturismo is a originally a nineteenth century hamlet has recently been restored to its former splendour.The house covers an area of 350 square metres: On the ground floor in the highly equipped professional kitchen we find a steam convection oven, microwave, blast chiller, fridge, freezer, washing machine, mixer and other hi-tech electro domestic equipment. Continuing, we can visit the ample 45 square metre dining room with an open fire, the lounge with LCD satellite TV and open fire, a spa with a 2 metre Jacuzzi, a Turkish bath and a bathroom. On the first floor we have four bedrooms two of which with en suite showers and two with en suite baths, all with 26” satellite lcd TV. Casa Tua is a beautiful villa located on the top of a hill with an impressive view of the valley and of the sea. The street to reach Casa Tua gets narrower in the last half a mile, with a couple of curves where if you have a big car you should do some steering manoeuvers. While all kind of cars could reach the villa, we suggest, if you want an easier and handier driving, to rent mid size cars.

Whilst ideal for a peaceful, rural away from it all holiday, this property offers the convenience of town too, with the famous market town of Castelnuovo less than a 5 minute drive away.
Indeed the beautiful fortress, with commanding views over the valley and the mountains beyond, and noted for its classical music events, is 10 minutes on foot. The town itself has a famous weekly market, bars, restaurants, shops, and train station for easy exploring. Drive times are: Castelnuovo 3 mins or so Mediaeval town of Barga - 15 minutes Lucca - 45 minutes Pisa - 1 hour 15 minutes Florence - 90 minutes National Park of Orrechiella - 30 mins Walking, horseriding, and picnic opportunities straight from the door!

This stone cottage has 3 bedrooms (all of which can be double or twin) and 3 bathrooms. The traditional stone and character loggia of the outside blend perfectly with the countryside, and provide a wonderful contrast to the fresh light and up to date interior, which offers all brand new modern conveniences, with some antique and restored furniture ensuring a sense of character is retained. A little about the area
The property is situated in a peaceful rural location with stunning open views, yet within walking distance cross country to the local town which is also a short drive away of all facilities,, where there are a couple of good restaurants, basic shops, bank, bars and the most wonderful deli for home made takeaway hot and cold food that you can take back for the evening.

There are various good restaurants providing fresh local home cooked traditional food within a short drive, as well as local one off shops, delicatessens, gelaterias and supermarkets.

For relaxing afternoons out, there are lots of pretty villages to explore in the immediately locality, one of which is Castiglione itself which is a fully walled village commanding outstanding views over the Apuane mountains. Many of these villages have festas in the summer with food, drink and dancing.

Situated only a short drive from the National Park of Orrecchiella, the location is ideal for walking, hiking, horseriding, mountain biking and picnicking, surrounded by views of the seemingly endless mountains, and local chestnut woodland.

For those who enjoy the outdoor life there is also a local tree climbing/zip wiring park, with courses adapted for all age groups, from the very young to adults.

There are local adventure parks where one can try water canyoning, rock climbing, swimming in rock pools, canoeing etc and there is the Grotta del Vento, a massive cave system in the mountains which is a good day out.

There is an ancient fortress to visit with jaw dropping views, and interactive displays for children including a chance to try a little archery.

For when a townie day beckons, the local market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is only just over 10 minute drive. Here there are bars, restaurants, a famous Thursday morning market, old castle walls, the river Serchio and local train station.

The beautiful mediaeval town of Barga with its cobbled streets, great architecture, cathedral and great views is only a 25 minute drive. Barga is famous for its art and music, and here one can often enjoy free music, evening markets, dancing, and sometimes even impromptu entertainment from Paolo Nutini! Becoming well known for its restaurants too, Barga has plenty of places to eat.

Lucca, the fully walled Mediaeval City and the Capital of the Region is only an hours drive and one can spend the day cycling or meandering along its ample walls; people watching in both the grand and tiny piazzas with prosecco, coffee or ice cream; designer shopping; climbing towers, visiting some of its 99 churches or just taking in the atmosphere. If you like opera, there is a recital every evening before dinner in a unique church setting.

The traditional Tuscan sites of Pisa and Florence are easily do-able in a day trip as are the beaches of Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio. Many guests also visit the Cinque Terre...

In summary, the accommodation is situated in a very peaceful location, yet not too isolated and well placed to explore the area - both mountains and towns/cities.

It is located in a superb position, high in the hills, 15 kms to the south-east of Lucca and surrounded by olive groves and pine trees. Both the house and the pretty garden are exceptionally well-maintained by the owners and the interiors are equipped with all modern facilities. The swimming pool, situated to one side of the house, is in a perfect position to enjoy the beautiful views. Close to the pool area, there is a stone-built barbecue and pizza oven, an outdoor shower and an outdoor dining area. Near the driveway, about 20 meters from the house, there is small guesthouse with a double bedroom and bathroom. The secluded position and the fact that it is accessible by its private road ensure peace and tranquillity for the guests of Al Mennucci. This road lasts for 1 km and it is unsealed, therefore not suitable for low sport cars.

Villa Carnicelli is situated at an altitude of 200 metres, on a 4,000 m² (43,056 ft²) hill and the living area is of 450 m² (4,844 ft²) on three floors.
The Villa was built at the beginning of the 18th century and belonged to the noble Carnicelli family. The 200 years old cotto floors and the aged original wooden doors remain unchanged.
The inside and outside plastering has been chosen among the most biological ones available on the market, thus respecting strictest ecological norms.
All matresses, bed toppers and pillows are ecological and health-friendly and have been produced with natural latex by the German specialist JONA SLEEP. All pillows are ergonomic. Linen bedding is fresh organic air-dried.

The old school house is nestled in the centre of the beautiful village of Vorno, with views to the south towards the mountains and Lucca to the north. Vorno is superbly located with Pisa International airport approximately 35 minutes away. Lucca is approximately 12 minutes by car, Florence about 1 hour and the coast is 35 minutes. There is plentiful parking for up to 8 cars.

Our beautiful villa can be rented to sleep 12 people, with 6 ensuite bedrooms. The west wing has a very large open plan reception room with a traditional Tuscan kitchen at one end. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with Villeroy Boch tableware for your use. There is also a downstairs washroom and utility room. The east wing has a separate sitting room and separate kitchen. The villa is interconnected at ground floor level. There are two staircases, one in each wing. Each bedroom has a double bed with provision for two separate single beds in our Volterra and Chianti bedrooms. The sanitary ware within each bathroom is Villeroy Boch. The Sleepeezee mattresses are wool and cashmere for warmth in the winter and for cooling in the summer. We use premium Egyptian cotton percale sheets for your comfort. All bedrooms have air-conditioning and mosquito nets at the windows.

The villa is full of beautiful paintings and has an excellent library of both classical and contemporary texts and good collection of local guidebooks and art books for your interest. We are a family friendly place. There are two travel cots available, a stairgate, car seat and children's toys for inside and outside play. We have recently purchased an upright piano which is tuned annually and provide music for your enjoyment.

Outside, the south facing garden gives you plenty of space where you can lounge, play, dine and swim. The outside terrace has dinning for put to 12 people and there is a barbecue for your use. There are loungers and chairs by the pool, where you can chill down and relax. The child friendly, salt-water pool (11m x 5m), can be heated upon requested. There are integrated steps into the pool in the north corner and an integrated bench where you can sit under the mulberry trees, that provide a natural shade. We have a table tennis table, yoga mats and outside boules for your enjoyment. We also have an organic vegetable garden for you to use during your stay with us. On the corner of the garden, by the road, is a pump where you can get fresh spring water to drink. We also have the same water running through our taps.

The village has a wonderful family restaurant which you can walk to within minutes. They serve traditional Tuscan food and have a beautiful garden in which to dine. You can also take away pizzas for your convenience. There is a splendid, award winning, organic restaurant which you can walk to along the riverside. The views from the terrace to the mountains are magnificent. They produce their own award-winning wines, olive oil and vegetables. There is also a theatre and art gallery within the same ownership, where there are exhibitions and a variety of activities during the season. You can drive to another excellent traditional family run Tuscan restaurant in the next village. Indeed, there are plentiful places to eat extremely well. The local supermarket, patisserie, pharmacy and other shops are in the next village. There is an excellent butcher about 10 minutes’ drive away.

Airport transits can be arranged through Roman, our house manager, who also runs a local taxi company. He is also a tour guide if you would like to arrange, for example, a wine tasting at a Tuscan Vineyard during your stay. We can also arrange for a local chef to prepare food for you, for special meals or cooking schools upon request. The area is renowned for excellent off-road biking and for trekking. Walk east out of the village to the observatory where you will find wonderful views across the valley toward Lucca and see the old aqueduct that was used to deliver water to Lucca.

It is easy to get to the house which is located a bit on the outskirts of the village and before the road starts climbing uphill. The villa is surrounded by a 1000 m2 large, flat and very child friendly garden, completely fenced. In the garden next to lives the helpful owner.

The 7 x 14 mt swimming pool with a varying depth from 1.20 to 2.30 mt. is located about 30 meters from the house. The swimming pool is completely private and is not shared with anyone.
