Although the apartment is located on a quiet street, there is a lot of activity right around the corner. Within a few steps you are on one of the main streets, via San Paolino, where you can easily find great restaurants, grocery stores, enjoy some gelato or a glass of wine. The apartment is only a couple of minute’s walk to Piazza San Michele and the famous shopping street of via Fillungo.

GETTING AROUND:
The historic centre of Lucca is easily & best explored by foot. Bicycle rentals are available almost everywhere within the walls, and are also an excellent way to explore the city centre and it's surrounding wall.
Piazza Verdi is conveniently located just a short walk away from the apartment, from here you can catch buses directly to other destinations in Tuscany. Piazza Verdi also has the closest pay by the hour parking. The train station is situated a short 10 minute walk straight out of the south entrance of the historical centre.

Plastic bottles are a big problem in our towns – as they tend to clog our waste bins allover Lucca - . We suggest our clients not to buy water in plastic bottles. The taps water in Lucca is perfectly drinkable (controlled by the City Authority) and there are many “fontanelle” (public water taps) allover the town, for instance the fountain at the beginning of Via della Zecca, with high quality tap water coming from the near hills and mountains.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT THIS APARTMENT IN LUCCA:



The apartment is located in an antique palace and more exactly in the rooms that in the 13th century housed the kitchens of the former Palace of the family FATINELLI which were very famous silk merchants of Lucca during the whole middle age. Here from the year 1218 to the year 1278 SANTA ZITA (Saint Zita) lived as a servant of the Fatinelli Family.



Coming from a poor family, at the age of twelve he started serving at the Fatinelli family's house in Lucca. According to the devotional tradition, it was immediately appreciated by the poor for generosity and by the Fatinelli family for their dedication to work and goodness of spirit.



The same tradition recounts the legend according to which, perhaps because envious of the affection received by Zita, another maid of the Fatinellis would have started to imply in the mind of the head of the family the suspicion that Zita stole at home what she gave to the poor; one day the master, meeting Zita with a bloated apron as she went to a needy family, would ask her what she was carrying; although this was full of bread, Zita would have replied that she wore only flowers and leaves, and, having melted her apron, flowers and leaves would have fallen.



The people of Lucca are very devoted to Santa Zita, almost as much as they are devoted to the Holy Face. The devotion to Zita, in "smell of sanctity", grew considerably throughout his life so much that, at his death, the faithful of Lucca wanted his body to be buried in the Basilica of San Frediano. Tradition reports that it has remained incorrupt: it is still visible - mummified naturally - in the transparent case under the altar of the chapel dedicated to it. The last canonical recognition of the mummified body was carried out in 1989, together with the palaeopathological study.



Santa Zita was so revered in Tuscany that she was quoted by Dante Alighieri who, referring to a magistrate from Lucca, talked about the elderly of Santa Zita, already identifying Lucca with the saint. Note, however, that at the date of the writing of the Divine Comedy attested between 1307 and 1321, Zita was already dead (1278) but had not yet been canonized, as her cult was approved on September 5, 1696 from Pope Innocent XII. Nevertheless, Dante already indicated her as a saint, further proof of the great popular devotion that Zita was the protagonist of.



Santa Zita was proclaimed patron saint of the servants by Pius XII and is also patron saint of Lucca, housewives and bakers. The week of April 27 is held in Lucca, at the Basilica of San Frediano and the amphitheatre of Lucca, in honour of the saint, a floral event aimed at remembering the miracle of breads transformed into flowers.

The Holiday home “Tenuta Col Sereno” is situated in Versilia, that part of Tuscany where, within few kilometers, you can find sandy beaches, steep mountains, rolling hills and lake oases which inspired the melodies of the great composer Giacomo Puccini, that here spent most of his life.
Inside the estate, The Casale, surrounded by a large garden of olive-trees , stands out on top of a small hill which is just about eighty meters high, in the immediate hinterland of the town of Viareggio which is only 6 kilometers away.

As you walk through the entrance gate of the estate, a cypress-lined private road takes the guests to the car park, where a short path , lined with sweet-scented lavender, sage and rosemary, leads to the holiday apartments.

The tranquillity of the place is interrupted, in different moments of the season and of the day by the morning singing of small birds, by the shrill of cicadas in the hottest hours and by the crickets on summer evenings. Far away, the bells of the churches scattered on the hills around in the distance mark the passing of time.

What for over 200 years was a farmhouse with stable, barn and, cellar, has been recently completely refurbished in the present Villa, to offer guests a comfortable and relaxing stay, in two 4-room fully independent apartments, with central heating for stays in the colder season: PALMA and MAGNOLIA..
Each apartment offers up to 6 beds, 2 in a large double bedroom, where a cot can be supplied on request, 2 in a room with two single beds, and 2 in the living room with a comfortable sofa, which can easily and quickly be transformed into a double bed.

In the living room, decorated with furniture typical of the Tuscan tradition, located beside the sofa you can find a store cupboard with showcase, an extension table with chairs and satellite TV; on one side of the room is arranged the cooking area, which is equipped with gas cooker with 4 burners and oven, refrigerator with freezer, sink with two basins, in addition to furniture containing the crockery and everything necessary for cooking.

The bathroom, placed in the sleeping area between the two bedrooms ,is equipped with washbasin, bidet, bathtub and shower, toilet. The washing machine is placed in a separate room.
The entrance to the apartment overlooks a veranda of about 15 sq , for the sole use of the apartment; the veranda is covered with ceiling beams and rafters in chestnut and cypress wood recovered from the old farmhouse and reused here. There you can find a table and chairs, much appreciated for breakfasts and lunches outdoors.

Outside the spaces are large: the verandas overlook directly an almost flat garden of olive trees, approximately 5,000 sq wide and fenced outwards, overlooking the plain, the town of Viareggio and a long stretch of coastline; from here the view goes away on the sea, up to see, on a clear day, the profile of the isle of the isle of Gorgona, still today the home of a penal colony, and, more rarely, the isle of Capraia and the northern part of Corsica, distant about sixty miles;

on those clear days, to the South you can even guess in the distance (20 km) the profile of the Cathedral and the leaning tower of Pisa; at night then the coast shines with lights, ranging from the lighthouse located on the island of Tino (Gulf of La Spezia)in the North to the lighthouse of the port of Livorno in the South.

Among the olive trees, for each apartment guests can use a table with a marble top and wooden benches; in addition, a common shower made of stone for refreshment in the heat of the summer and various small fountains , made of stone too. Certainly everyone will be able to find the right position where to place for a pleasant relaxation, umbrellas and deck chairs supplied to the apartments.

Here and there grow many-colored oleanders, citrus plants, fragrant Sage and Rosemary hedges, Strawberry trees, while Geraniums and bougainvillea adorn the loggias.
For moments of meditation, a “marginetta” (a tiny chapel) with the image of the Madonna della Fontenova rests in the shade of century-old cypresses.

- "We got a warm welcome on arrival with help to carry our luggage. The owner is very friendly and helpful and speaks German and English very well. We got a tour through the garden from the owner, showing us the olive trees and plants of citrus fruits. The garden is really large and very beautiful. or it should merely be called an estate. The house has a beautiful view and you can sit everywhere outside, on a covered terrace, or under a parasol or a tree. The house is well equipped, just like at home for us. The beds were good and everything was clean. I would recommend this place to everyone who wants a calm and comfortable holiday. Ideas to visit: Cinque terre (crowded!), Florence, Lucca, the beach (5 mins drive), Pisa. Siena can be reached in a day trip, but it is somewhat further away."

- "We really enjoyed our stay at the apartment. Lido di Camaiore is a great place to stay, very close to many sights we wanted to visit. Lucca, Pisa, Portofino and cinque terre were all within a few hours drive and spending the evenings relaxing on the roof terrace of the apartment was a great end to every one of those exiting days. The bed was firm but comfortable, the couch super cozy and the kitchen perfect for cooking small meals when you didn't feel like going to one of the many good restaurants in Lido di Camaiore or Viareggio. While the weather wasn't too hot when we visited, In case it is there is AC in both rooms and when I tested it it was really quiet. If you wanted to nitpick: The shower is a bit smaller than average and the water pressure was fluctuating from good to weak occasionally but it wasn't a real issue to us. Overall I can really recommend this apartment, for us two it was perfect for the week."

HISTORY :
The structure dates back to the 1600’s and according to the stories handed down for generations it was originally a convent. With time it became a place for the selection and storage of the local rice crop. A plaque on the front of the building testifies to this. From generation to generation it acquired various transformations and during the last century part of the structure became a flour mill, evidenced by the large and picturesque iron wheel that still exists behind the house. Another part of the structure was used as an olive press to produce the local extra virgin olive oil.
The apartment on the ground floor has been restored maintaining the existing features of the olive press still present today. Inside the apartment there is an old piece of machinery which was used to press the olives and in the floor covered by a glass panel you can see the terra cotta container to preserve the freshly pressed olive oil. Also visible are the original supporting arches of the old structure.

The original “stone machinery” that was used to press the olives has been placed in the garden. The apartment has 2 bedrooms, one bathroom and one large room used as a living room and dining area.
The property is comfortably furnished with new and restored antique furniture and keeping in tune with the original look.
An exterior dining area is available just outside the entrance door. There is also a large garden to have meals and relax enjoying the beautiful countryside.

This is an apartment on the same floor that you go outside - so it's very similar like an indipendent house - the other person who lives there have their entrance in their house in others part - and it's probaly that you don't see nobody when you are here - however there are very quite people and very friendly

Next to "The Mill" there is a small road, where there is a bit of traffic some times during the day. However we did not take much notice of it. To summarice, I can highly recommend G&G mill."

The proximity to the Walls, the Government Library and a public garden which can be accessed for free make your stay even more relaxing. The spaces of the urban walls which are really close offer the possibility of freely doing outdoor sports or regenerating walks.

The apartment, ground floor and first floor, is a part of a restyled typical Tuscan country-house, immersed in an ancient olive trees orchard, from which you can enjoy a superb view of the Thyrrenian sea.

In front of the house there's a large outdoor space with a "pergola" provided with table, chairs and deck-chairs. On the ground floor there are a kitchen and a living-room with fireplace. A flight of stairs takes to the first floor where there are two bedrooms, one of them with double bed, next to it there's a bathroom with shower. The other room has a single bed and a bunkbed, adjacent to the main bathroom with bathtub. In the big building there are two other apartments; we live in one of them. We are at your disposal for information and any necessity.

The house is furnished with care and it's equipped with Internet WiFi, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, electric oven, toaster, barbecue, hairdryer, TV set and DVD player, bed linen, blankets, towels, baby bed.

In autumn and winter you can use gas heating (as an extra will be charged to the guests) and the fireplace (with logs as an extra for the guests).

The house is reachable from Montebello di Camaiore with a very short drive on a steep, narrow road. It is not recommended to less experienced drivers. Easier with smaller vehicles.
