- "Amelia was hands down the best host, a real homely mother feel to her, warm and welcoming and excellent local knowledge. Explained to me in exact details how to get around on the bus (you pay $5 and it is unlimited for the day and takes you on a loop, if you needed to know). It is clear she puts in a lot of effort into running the Casa, the room was spotless, the sheets were sparkling clean. Everywhere smelt clean and it was all tidy. She also makes herself available when needed. Also a nice balcony you could sit out on just by the bedroom doors, perfect for a quiet chill in the sunshine. Breakfast was excellent made by her son, very tasty and plenty of it. Room had a fridge in it, which is a nice touch, esp as it is not filled with an expensive mini bar, you can just put your own drinks in there. Aircon worked perfectly. Security is clearly very important for Amelia, the gate is locked, for which you are provided a key. And the doors are kept locked too (even if I couldn't remember which key was which). If I return to Cuba I'll be hoping to stay with Amelia. "

We didn’t have to go beyond 4 blocks for shopping, restaurants, music, a park with local vendors and of course the beautiful beach of Varadero. We had many wonderful conversations and moments with the community. Bexy made the best breakfast we had in Cuba for the 9 days we were there. She was also so helpful with everything we needed. Usimi (next door neighbor) braided my hair along with my daughter’s. Miguel and Anna (owners) are very warm and friendly. Overall, it was a very memorable experience. "

- "Writing from Dec 2022. Just had a stay here, with our family, and it was excellent. Ricardo's is a house in a very nice location in Varadero, situated between (and a few blocks away from each) 1st avenue and the Autopista. Walking distance to both the main Varadero beach to the north of the house. Walking distance to the mall with an amusement park to the south. Yet no big auto traffic around the house! Good neighborhood, and secure. (This being Varadero, at least one night per week you will hear loud music from one of the bars or discos. But they are away enough from the house). We rented both (two) rooms for my family, so we had the entire front part of the house, with the kitchen and the patio, all to ourselves. The house and the patio are top quality! All equipment in the house works. An interesting thing: the owner decorated the house and the patio with many objects ranging from crafts to pieces of art, which combined together make for a nice impression. The patio is cool! It is walled, well-shaded by one big tree and several smaller palm trees, and decorated with various art objects by the owner! Our toddler much enjoyed chasing geckos and birds on the patio, and watching freerun chicken on the street. Our teenage kids went to the amusement park by themselves. I am happy with the visit!"

- "the room we booked was supposed to be at a hotel with 150 guest rooms, restaurant. Airport shuttle. wi fi in lobby. On the beach. It was a persons house. The owners were a 61 year old man and his 82 year old mother. Super nice people but only 1 room in the back of the house. Small kitchenette area with a crock pot slow cooker, sink and a fridge. No stove top as advertised either. couple of bowls but no cooking pans or pots. it was 2 blocks from the beach. The restaurant was their kitchen that they offered breakfast including a scrambled egg, some lettuce and bun for $7.50 Canadian. The average meal out was $6 for more complete meal with coffee and water. Internet was sketchy at best. Had to buy cards for $3 an hour. Only allowed to purchase 2 at a time. One of which never worked and would not replace! Could not reach home or hotels.com Food and dring ran out daily. Inconsistenties between what was available as well. Most places only had water to sell after 2 pm daily. Beaches were beautiful and met some friendly locals. Lost 10 lbs on my trip. That was not the goal at all. My wife smokes but we could not find a lighter anywhere. When we did find one it was taken at airport security on the way home. Cab from the airport was $50 Canadian!! Should be like $15 to $20 after learning the way it works there. Sad it was that way but I think people go for the beaches, which really are spectacular. Otherwise, bring food with you and try to double check accomodations before arrival. "
