We’ve named our apartment “Bonheur en Bonnieux” (Happiness in Bonnieux), because that’s how we feel when we’re here. We hope you’ll feel that same sense of “bonheur” when you live for a week or more in our comfortable and well-equipped apartment and enjoy village life in this beautiful part of Provence.

The buildings are 200+ years old, but our apartment was completely renovated and decorated in 2012 and offered for rentals beginning in April 2013. The newest bedroom was renovated and decorated in 2016. We know sometimes there is a "leap of faith" when renting directly from an owner. We've been leading small group tours in Europe (and in Bonnieux) since 2006, and we're well-known in the travel business. We have many repeat guests and take direct bookings as well as bookings through rental websites. The VRBO listing includes reviews from guests who have enjoyed our home in Provence. Our 1300 square-foot apartment has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and is ideal for solo travelers, couples, small groups of friends, and small families with older children. You’ll especially enjoy our large, well-equipped kitchen and the adjoining covered terrace where you can enjoy a meal, sip a glass of wine, and observe daily life in Bonnieux.

Our apartment is set on two floors of the building. We have our own front door off a small, conveniently-located pedestrian street in the lower part of the village. In the entranceway there are pegs to hang coats and shopping baskets or to leave dirty hiking boots.

Our newer bedroom suite (with ensuite bathroom) is located off the entranceway. The other two bedrooms, a second bathroom, the living room, kitchen and terrace are located upstairs.

Our newly-decorated, spacious bedroom suite is about 300 square feet. This room is very private with its own bathroom: a toilet and tiny sink in one room and a big shower with the larger sink and mirror in a separate room. The suite has a queen bed and includes a wardrobe, dresser and bed tables with lamps.There's a beautiful, original tiled floor and lots of light from the two windows. The "coffee nook" is a separate area with a cafe table and two chairs, sink, cabinets, Tassimo coffee maker, and hot water kettle... perfect for a morning beverage before joining the rest of the group upstairs. And off this area is a little balcony with a table and two chairs, overlooking the main street.

The rest of the apartment is up a flight of steps from the front door and entrance. This part of the apartment extends across two adjoining buildings and there are a few stairs on this level.

One bedroom has a queen bed and the other bedroom has twin beds; both bedrooms have tall windows that look out across the village and the surrounding countryside. Both bedrooms have plenty of storage space and good reading lights.

The upstairs bathroom is located on a separate level so it's very private, up eight steps from the main level. There is a handrail and nightlights. The tiled bathroom is compact but has lots of natural light (even a little view!), with a toilet, shower, sink and plenty of storage space for your personal items. We have a heated towel bar for stays in the off-season.

The living room has a tall window overlooking the pedestrian street below and includes a comfortable couch and three armchairs; a coffee table; an antique chest; a wide screen television with DVD player and lots of movies; plenty of reading lamps; and a bookcase filled with guidebooks, maps, novels and more. We also have a CD player with an Ipod/Iphone docking station.

The kitchen is a large and bright room with modern appliances and cabinets, lots of counter space, a big round table with four chairs , and a cupboard filled with colorful pottery and glassware. (Two more chairs are available for larger groups.) The kitchen includes a four-burner cooktop, oven, refrigerator and freezer (new!), dishwasher, clothes washing machine, microwave, and Tassimo coffeemaker. We entertain when we're here, and it's important to us to have a very well-equipped kitchen. We think you will love preparing and eating some meals here! The boulangeries, butcher shop, small grocery store, and Friday market are two minutes from our front door.

Double doors open from the kitchen out to the covered terrace, which also has a table and four chairs. From the terrace you can look down the narrow main street to the Petit Luberon mountain.

We’ve decorated our apartment in a style that is comfortable and authentic, a mix of antiques and modern pieces. We’ve used our experience staying in more than 40 vacation rentals all over Europe to provide everything we think will enhance your stay in Provence. We love Provence and this is our part-time home, so you’ll find many special touches that aren’t typical in a vacation rental.

Best of all, our Bonnieux home is located in an ideal spot in the village... in the lower part of the village near most of the shops, restaurants and cafes, artist galleries, the post office and ATM, and the wonderful Friday morning market. There are several options for parking just minutes away.

Our apartment is equipped for year-round living and Bonnieux is a year-round village. In winter the double glazed windows, electric heat, and extra blankets will keep you warm. In the warmer months, our tall windows allow a breeze and some cross ventilation, and the shutters help control the sun and heat during the warmest part of the day. We have air conditioning on both levels (as well as electric fans), which will quickly cool the apartment during the warmer months.

The space
Here it is: a house in the centre of the village with a separate entrance that opens onto a living room and a hand-painted kitchen in pure shabby chic style. The open kitchen is fully equipped and has an electric oven and microwave.
A pretty hallway leads to the bedroom with a mezzanine ideal for accommodating one or two children. The bedroom is cosy in its simplicity.
And then, after a lovely veranda, we come to our gem.... our charming garden with a breathtaking view of the village church and the Provencal landscape.
Here you can enjoy your aperitif in peace and quiet for a truly relaxing moment.
Our house is cosy, tastefully furnished and comfortable. ideal for those who love simplicity and charme.

The accommodation is large and perfectly well equipped, it has a bathroom and a separate toilet. There is a washing machine in the bathroom.
There are 2 bedrooms with 140 beds. The main room is composed of a very well-equipped kitchen, gas-electric stove, electric, microwave, fridge with freezer. It is open to the dining area and the living room which has a tv and a sofa bed. Access to WiFi is free
The terrace offers magnificent views of the surroundings and allows you to enjoy the flamboyant colors of the sunset, at the time of the aperitif! It is equipped with a table, 4 chairs and 2 sunbathing.

The living area is very bright with a ceiling height of up to 4 meters. This space was designed as a loft, it has no partition allowing free movement between the bedroom space, bathroom and living room.
Only the toilet is closed by a door.
The bedroom area has comfortable bedding for a restful night as well as a closet.
The bathroom has an island bathtub with a shower column.

Newly refurbished apartment in the Stronghold of Bonnieux (at the time of Avignon popes) situated in the remparts of Bonnieux, in the center of the village. This is a unique place with 12th century walls made with old Provence stones, a few meters away from bakeries, restaurants, markets and villages activities.
The apartment is perfect for a couple. 2 twin beds can accomodate two other people in another bedroom.

The space
The place is near every beautiful places in Luberon at maximum 15minutes driving. Bonnieux is a very strategic place to explore the area.

Newly refurbished apartment in the Stronghold of Bonnieux (at the time of Avignon popes) situated in the remparts of Bonnieux. The whole place has been restored with ancient materials and has retained its original features including exposed beams and tiled floors. The whole apartment has an astonishing view on the Luberon.

Bonnieux also offers casual and top-of-the-line restaurants which are also within a walking distance of 5 minutes.

There is no such rental in the Luberon : what we offer here is a very unique way of living in an historic, authentic and preserved place.
And we will love to share it with you, since we welcome you personally on your arrival.

Please note that my mother or some friends live in the village : they are available if you should need anything during your stay so please feel free to call my mother or send me an email in any case. I’m quite reactive on my phone. This is a familial management, we are really available during your stay and we prefer answering questions and address eventual issues while you’re here than in the commentary section after your departure.

Please remember this rental is situated in a medieval place, which was built nearly 1000 years ago and sheltered Templar Knights! This is not a place where you’ll find Hilton’s Hotel white clean walls but ancients stones (sometimes dusty) with old antiques, which were gathered little by little by our family. We are pleased to welcome you to share such an history with you: thank you to respect the place and being careful with furnitures and decorations.

History of the place:
Bonnieux is a village nested in an old roman occupation zone (1st century b.c). Primitive shelters were located in the valley because of river vicinity: you can see a clear witness from this past taking the road to Apt and admire Le Pont Julien (Julius bridge). Mosaics were found in this area, but most of them are unavailable to the public because they belong to private collections.
During so called « barbarian invasions » (including Visigoths, Ostrogoths …), the housing units moved to the hill for safety reasons: this is the start of Bonnieux history.

The house you are living now is one of the first troglodytic places of the village and was a fortified piece of defence against invasions coming from Avignon/Cavaillon. These buildings lasted centuries (and still counting…). The place you’re standing in dates back to the 12-13th centuries.

The 12th century saw the foundation of Templar knights order, under the impulsion of Saint Bernard. It’s highly probable that this very important stronghold was built by the Templars, great engineers and builders, since their presence is well known in the area and in the village during later centuries until the Order dissolution by Philippe Le Bel, King of France at the beginning of the 14th century.

Later, the village was used as summer holiday residency for cardinals of the pontifical court in Avignon until definitive return of popes in Rome at the end of the 14th Century (1379). Buildings were then occupied by peasants and progressively abandoned, as big cities drained more and more people.

This house was bought in 1970 by our parents and grand parents. Their dream was to refurbish this amazing place. As you can see, renovating process is still going on and we are very grateful for your choice to stay with us since it allows our family to go on with our history. You are now also a part of this place, thanks to your support.
