National Register Property

Cable Office in Seward, Alaska, United States, is a building that served as a telegraph office that connected Seward with communications in the rest of the United States.

The cable office was constructed in 1905 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the Washington–Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System (WAMCATS). Telegraph service from the lower states first connected to Valdez, Alaska. In summer 1905, submarine cable was extended from Valdez to Seward.

The first message over the line was to A. C. Frost, president of the Alaska Central Railway, who was in Chicago: 'This first message transmitted over Alaska Cable connects Seward from this day to the great city of Chicago.' Among initial regular users of the telegraph line was the local newspaper, the Seward Daily Gateway. In August 1905, owner Frank Ballaine began featuring the previous day's news from the Coterminous United States in his paper. Before the telegraph line, outside news arrived via steam ship days or weeks later.

The office was operated by Army personnel. The front room of the building was open to the public who could send and receive messages. The central part of the ground floor served as the operator's station, while workers lived on the second floor. Service continued until an earthquake severed the line in 1934. By that time, radio communication had been established by the Navy and the telegraph line was not replaced. The government retained ownership until 1961. Since then, the building has served as a private residence and rented apartments.

We are now offering lodging in this wonderful home. Completely renovated bathrooms, fresh interior paint and charming period touches throughout and a beautiful, historic exterior as well.

The house is set up similar to a duplex, with the GOVT. CABLE OFFICE downstairs (2 bedroom/2 bath, kitchen, living room and a wonderful covered porch.

The upstairs is the original lodging with a completely separate entrance. This is a 2 bedroom/1 bath. This is referred to as the TELEGRAPH HOUSE QUARTERS (also on VRBO).

Both have some wonderful views and a 1905 historic feel. You may rent both the top and bottom (depending on availability) or try both on different occasions!

Each bedroom has a queen bed and the living room has queen-size pullout sleeper sofa for additional guests. Each sleeping area is thoughtfully fitted with black-out coverings to help guests get a good night sleep in the land of the Midnight Sun. The blinds are also top down, bottom up so that you can maintain privacy from the street but still enjoy the mountain views.

The kitchen features a large space for cooking and a grill on the deck is available for outdoor cooking as well. The kitchen is fully stocked with most everything you'll need to prepare meals and beverages. With several bar stools at the counter and a coffee table that extends to waist height, there's no proper dining area for (6).

We are one of Sewards Historic buildings and part of the Historic walking tour. This rental has been renovated to provide modern amenities, but we kept some of the historic charm. This rental has been renovated, but we kept some of the historic charm. The size is approximately the same as a standard hotel room, but we provided a lot more amenities and a LOT more affordable. It is a 1 bedroom with queen super comfy bed, closet, bathroom with tub/shower and small seating area. Kitchenette has single induction plate, convection oven, microwave, air fryer, Keurig, French press and refrigerator. Blinds and blackout curtains to help you get a restful nights sleep. This apartment is in a building housing 7 units, so quiet hours are a must. Tv is streaming with free WIFI boasting highest speed available with unlimited data. Outside area has gazebo seating, sunny seating and outdoor table. Charcoal grill provided.

You will never want to leave! Located on the harbor boardwalk this second story apartment has views that are out of this world! Literally there is only one space like this in town! The views are amazing and unobstructed! Watch boats pull in and out of the harbor from Resurrection Bay. Peek out the large living room windows to watch the animals (harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters, birds,) play outside in the water and snag fish from the fish cleaning station! Stare across the bay (watch for breaching whales) into the mountains where you can see glaciers and in the spring an occasional avalanche! Through the bedroom windows you can watch hikers climb the famous Mt. Marathon! Over 4th of July you can watch the race laying in bed! This one bedroom one bathroom apartment really is one in a million and we are eager to share it with you!

Our house was built in 1918 on one of Seward's original town sites. It is within walking distance to various restaurants, shops, Resurrection bay, and the Alaska SeaLife Center. Our home is two blocks away from the free town shuttle bus stop, and several quaint coffee shops are within walking distance. Hiking trails are a block or two away from our house, and the Seward Boat Harbor is one mile away; you can either walk or take a free shuttle.
Travelers provide their own meals. Outdoor grill is available. No interaction with the owner due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Snacks, tea, and coffee are always available. It has a small kitchenette but NO cooking stove/oven. Standard WI-FI is available but not guaranteed.

We offer a cozy downstairs unit called the “Mt. Marathon Suite” that is attached to the main house. This space is EXTREMELY clean and sleeps 4, with a private entrance. It is located on the backside of the house, facing Mt. Marathon, that includes a yard with a deck, a bbq, and two parking spaces.

The suite will be entirely your space. This lower-level suite is a two-bedroom unit that offers all new furniture throughout with queen size beds in both bedrooms with blackout shades for a good night’s sleep. The views of Mt. Alice from the bedrooms will take your breath away. It also includes a comfortable living area with a "Trundle style" pull-out couch that is perfect for KIDS ONLY, a flat screen Smart TV (no cable) with DVD player, Wi-Fi, a full bath with shower/tub, a SMALL efficiency kitchen that is fully equipped. I like my neighbor and I want her to continue to like us. Please show her respect. I would like for my house guests to use the correct gate so that we are not trespassing on private property.

***DO NOT follow your Maps app to get to the Marathon Suite. It will take you to the WRONG PLACE. I will send directions when it gets closer to your arrival.

***The grill is for use and perfect since the kitchenette is so small. There is a charcoal grill and a gas grill for your use. Please clean up after yourself so others don't have to do it for you. Please only cook fish on the grills OUTSIDE and not in the suite. The place is too small and fish odors linger for the next guests. Please be considerate because it is a really unpleasant smell to get rid of.

That said it was written checkin is 3 (sort of) you cannot enter the property until 4, but you can notify them at three you are there. This beautiful, newly updated waterfront suite (the downstairs of the main house) are steps away from Resurrection Bay and the bike path, that runs along the bay. The extremely clean private suite has a private entrance (that is on the backside of the house facing Mt. Marathon). The property includes a yard with a lower deck patio and two parking spaces.

This lower level suite is a two-bedroom unit that offers all new furniture throughout with queen size beds in both bedrooms with blackout shades for a good night’s sleep. There are views of Mt. Alice and Resurrection Bay from the bedrooms that will take your breath away. It also includes a comfortable living area with a "Trundle style" pull-out couch that is perfect for KIDS, a flat screen Smart TV (NO CABLE) with a DVD player, Wi-Fi, a full bath with shower/tub, a small efficiency kitchen (not a kitchen for Chef dinners) that is fully equipped for your needs. ***(This rental sleeps only 4 adults comfortably, but will sleeps 1 little person as well, with a "Trundle Couch). There is an EXTRA charge after 4 guests. The MAXIMUM guests are 5, and that includes little people too.

You will love our place because of the coziness, the beautiful views of Mt. Marathon/Mt. Alice, and the proximity to fishing, wildlife tours, kayaking/ice climbing tours, renown Iditarod Dog Sled Team tours, horseback riding, hiking trails, local shops, and restaurants. If you decide to use these complementary items, please return for others to use later.

If you are walking around town, you are more than welcome to use the side gate to get to the waterfront and/or house. This is located along the carport side of the house, near the oil tank and trash cans. The black house is NOT our property. That ‘s our neighbor's property. We like our neighbors and we want her to continue to like us. Please show her respect. I would like for my house guests to use the correct gate so that we are not trespassing on private property.

Built in 1907 by William Sauers, the Sauerdough Lodging building has served many purposes over the years. It originally housed the Seward Commercial Co. general store, with a town meeting hall upstairs. During the Roaring ’20s, the building was used as a brothel. It is presently the home of the Rowdy Radish cafe downstairs and rental apartments upstairs.

The five apartments are beautifully restored, with original hardwood floors, clawfoot tubs, original built-in cabinetry, high ceilings and vintage kitchens with modern appliances. In a town that was hit hard by the 1964 earthquake, few original buildings have stood the test of time, and fewer still feature such comfortable accommodations. We offer our guests the unique opportunity to experience Seward’s history without sacrificing any of the conveniences you expect while traveling.

Perfect place to end a long day. Put your feet up and relax in our warm and cozy abode. This unit is a lower level separate entrance of our home, located in a quiet neighborhood. Our house is dog friendly and we welcome friendly dogs. Dogs should not run free in the neighborhood. Please clean up after your furry friend.
Extra linens, blankets and pillows are located in the chaise part of the couch and also in the wicker baskets.
Lift up on the tab that is located at the end of the chaise.

The space
Located right off of the road with easy access to the front door. There is a covered space below the deck, for parking small vehicles or just utilizing for your needs. The square trash can is for recycling and the round one is for trash.

Please note that the toilet is up one step from the main bathroom floor. The light switch by the sink will illuminate the area.

Guest access
Guests will have access to the bedroom, Livingroom. and bathroom. Other rooms in the downstairs are storage space and will be locked for your safety.

Quiet time is 10pm to 6am
no smoking indoors
We do live upstairs and need to be up early. Although we do our best to walk lightly, there is some slight noise.

Private studio in 6-room lodge in a private rain forest setting. Built in 2016, units are in like-new condition. Small units are ideal for 1-2 people who are just looking for a quit place to sleep. Includes a king-sized bed.
