This is one The location is right on the beach beneath shady trees and cooling breeze. There are 3 bathrooms, one with a shower. There are also several outdoor showers. Most importantly, the water is fresh, not salty. The majority of places to stay in Playa Gigante and Playa Popoyo only offer saltwater showers. .There is a well equipped kitchen so you can cook. You see the ocean as you walk out the door of this shared room. The place is kept very clean and the vibe is peaceful and beachesque .

The space
There is a well stocked little store on the property that sells fair priced food and under a dollar, cold beer, †he water is sweet from a deep well. Most places in Playa Gigante and Playa Popoyo only offer saltwater showers.
There is kitchen on the property. If you want to save money there is no better way than to take advantage of the fresh fruits and vegetables and fish available locally. There are four other beds in this room, There are very few properties as large and tree-filled there is a sense of peaceful contemplation here and it seeps into everything we do. There are friendly dogs that will go on walks with you and they also keep the place pretty secure. They learn quickly who belongs and who does not.

To be noted about my place:

👧👶 If you don’t like kids (and are insulted/annoyed/bothered by their mess/noises) this IS NOT the place for you. It’s a family environment. Owner lives on site (upstairs) with 5 + 9yr old + Nicaraguan partner.

🌟 If you like talking with super cool/interesting unschooling/gringo kids that live in Nicaragua as expats they are usually pretty friendly and helpful!

🎨 If you are traveling with kids you will probably love it here!! We have colors and games and free tour guides (the kids) all included ☺️

To be noted about Ometepe:

⛺️ We are in the jungle! It is a step above camping almost ANYWHERE you stay on the island. Power outages are normal for the whole island (but we have backup fans/charger/light for guests) as well as water outages (but we have a backup tank).

🐜 Bugs exist *everywhere* but our place seems to have less because of the vibrations of road and no wild jungle as neighbors. Ants are always abundant during the switch of season. Big toads and spiders (neither which will harm you) exist everywhere.

🥵 It is HOT HOT by the end of March/April while we wait on the rain to return. If you can’t do hot maybe better not travel to ometepe during this season or pay for Air-conditioning (a handful of places exist with this on the island). My place is no hotter than anywhere else without A/C… it’s just a hot time to travel.

Missy speaks English and decent Spanish and Kenna is fluent in Spanish/English. Jonathan speaks a little English and Grayson speaks a little Spanish. If you want to practice Spanish or English we’re happy to chat!

Other things to note
The positive side of Kailaia is authenticity - you get more of a real Nica day-to-day type experience, both with locals and expats (AND btw we really do have far fewer bugs including mosquitoes!) than anywhere else on the island.

Kaikaia is located on the main road in the town of Balgue which is a hip location on the bus line… but if you are a light sleeper or don’t like kids you might need earplugs/headphones or maybe a place more in the jungle is for you.

The space
The hostel has been operating for 20 years and has the traditional architecture of an old house in the municipality. It has twenty rooms, all with their private bathrooms, a bar and a traditional dining room where guests can order national food and dishes from our specialty Mexican food. The entire interior and exterior premises are provided with Wi-Fi signal. The atmosphere is rural with lots of nature, hammocks, beach chairs and large places to relax. Wide corridors next to the rooms and terraces with gardens on several levels.

Check in for guests is at 12 noon and is extended until 10:00 pm as long as the client who has already made a reservation, gives advance notice. Check out is at 11:00 am. All guests have free access to the corridors and terraces with gardens to use hammocks and chairs.
The beach is 40 meters away with easy access. After 10:00 pm the main doors of the hostel are closed and guests must press a bell to leave or enter.
Strangers who are not previously registered are not allowed in the hostel. All guests are responsible for the care of their belongings. At the reception, there is a willingness to attend to guests' requests and provide general tourist information about places of entertainment and recommended beaches, transportation, etc. Breakfast is always included. There are two types of breakfast: Pancake with fruit or gallopinto egg and bread accompanied by fruit and coffee, served from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Breakfast is always a good time for guests to share and socialize.

Other things to note
Please be mindful of water consumption. We run on well water which sometimes runs dry for a couple of months of year. When this happens we have water delivered every second day at a costly price. Small things like turning taps off while washing hair, shaving and brushing teeth can help a lot.

There is a fruit and veg truck that passes the house twice a week, they also sell eggs and chicken. Otherwise we are happy to give you a ride to the grocery store twice a week when we do our shopping.

Sometimes the electricity goes out unexpectedly or there is a scheduled power cut for the neighbourhood. It usually comes back on within 4 hours. It's a good idea to bring a flash light.

Keep in mind that February to June is a very dry, dusty time of year. August to December is the wettest time of year (September and October particularly)
