The owners pride themselves on never having cleared any land that wasn’t necessary so the majority of their property is still virgin bushland. They reap the benefits as it’s a bird lovers paradise! Regular sightings of the King Parrott, Kookaburras and Rosellas plus a myriad of small birds including honeyeaters, the Australian Robin, Bluetits and Fairy Wrens. On regular occasions. they also have visits from the endangered Gang Gangs! Local bush walkers will often sight a swamp wallaby and kangaroos.
There are several outdoor seating areas on the property, where you can watch the smaller birds take a bath, sit and watch the beautiful sunsets they often get or just relax with a quiet drink.
Pets are welcome to stay at Hanging Rock Retreat but you must let us know in advance. Please note it is a rural, unfenced property so all pets must be with their owners at all times.
Guest Access:
Free parking on the property. When you arrive, Anne or Dick will meet you and show you to your room(s).
The Neighborhood:
There are local bush walks including the neighbouring monastery which has many shrines scattered through the bush; a really serene and peaceful place to visit. The property is located 1.8 km off the main connecting freeway between Sydney/Melbourne and Sydney/Canberra, so it is very easy to get to. Just a short ride out will take you to the rolling hills of the Southern Highlands and the small townships of Moss Vale, Bowral and Mittagong. Scattered throughout this area are many antique and homeware shops, cafes, fantastic restaurants and wineries. The historic, small local village of Berrima (won the best regional tourist town in 2021), boasts buildings going back to the 1830’s including an old courthouse and prison. You can pop in and have a drink and great meal at one of Australia’s oldest licenced pubs; The Surveyor General Inn built by convicts in 1834. Bowral is home to the famous Donald Bradman Museum for all you cricket lovers plus there are several good local golf courses. The Highlands boast great local State Forests and many beautiful waterfalls including Fitzroy Falls and Carrington Falls; both only a short drive away.

It would be best to self-drive so you can easily get around. The closest train station is Moss Vale (we are ok to collect for $60 return journey or $35 one way).
Other Things to Note:
