- "The view from the lounge window is amazing. The cottage was sparkling clean and had everything we could've needed plus a packet of Tunnocks wafers and a bottle of wine  The closest shop is the garage on the main road out of Stornoway so make sure you have enough supplies when you arrive as the shops are all closed on Sunday. There is a Tesco and Co-op in Stornoway for a bigger shop. We stayed in October and were very lucky with the weather. We travelled to Harris and to the north end of Lewis from this location easily. The standing stones at Callanish are not far away either. We would definitely come back  Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo"

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

You can be exploring the North and West of Lewis with some of the best beaches in the world in less than an hour. Have a wander around the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis, visit the jaw dropping sands of Uig, stroll through the Blackhouse village or visit the spectacular Callanish Standing Stones which are older than Stonehenge!

Stornoway is a great place to explore. The working harbour is so picturesque with Lews Castle overlooking the water. There are 270 hectares of lush castle gardens and grounds to explore. For a wee shopping trip, there’s also plenty of lovely local eateries and shops selling local gifts such as Harris Tweed.

Go slightly further afield and explore Harris which makes up the south of the island and is separated only by the hills of North Harris. Here’s where you’ll find many sights including the spectacular Luskentyre Beach and the Isle of Harris distillery. Feeling more energetic? then take on some epic hill walking on An Clisham, the highest peak in the Outer Hebrides standing at 799m tall.

Alternatively, hop on one of the many boat trips leaving from Tarbert or Leverburgh. There’s so much to do and see on both Lewis and Harris that you’ll want to be out exploring every day. Return from your daily adventures to your cosy cottage to unwind.

There are lots of fantastic local walks if you fancy spending your days closer to home. Take the dog for a walk to visit the stunning Tiumpan lighthouse only a 30-minute walk away (4 min drive). Use the viewing platform to search for whales, dolphins and porpoises. This is an official sighting spot for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation group! Watch the many nesting seabirds on the cliffs. On a clear day the mountains of mainland Scotland can be seen across the Minch (the body of water between the Western Isles and the Scottish mainland). You’re also a ten-minute walk from a lovely small beach. Explore the nearby coastal path which is accessed only a few minutes' walk away.

Fancy the night out? Use a local taxi service to pop into nearby Stornoway for a visit to one of the pubs and restaurants. Return to your wee cottage at the end of the evening to enjoy some well-earned relaxation.

Take the chance to experience the legendary Lewis summer sunsets and the beautiful Northern Lights in winter with some of the darkest night skies around. As the Western Isles is fortunate enough to be blessed witha micro-climate of its own, you are sheltered from some of the colder spells the rest of Scotland faces in the winter months.

Whatever you decide to do with your stay I expect you’ll fall in love with the island just as we did. Once you fall in love with the Outer Hebrides it never leaves you!

With these open-plan studios, you enter each hut and have a great space with double bed, double sofa bed (for children), Smart TV, wee dining area and a brilliant kitchenette. The shower room in each hut is a very good size. Stepping into the huts, you’re taken aback at the space within- they’re cavernous! The forethought of the owners has gone so far that they’ve created a fourth hut as a laundry/drying area for the many people hiking and biking across the islands. It’s an incredibly useful space that hardly anywhere else offers. There’s a dehumidifier and drying racks to ensure your hiking and biking gear is clean and dry by the next morning! It’s the perfect place to stop for those cycling and walking the Hebridean Way that officially finishes in Stornoway. Walkers and cyclists will love Hebridean Holiday Huts!

The huts suit everyone though because the location is so good, just a few minutes’ walk away from the Lews Castle and museum, and you can visit the market in town for local produce and crafts each Saturday. On the outskirts of Stornoway, you’re only a short walk to the centre of town, and being in a central location, you can easily explore the world-famous sights on the Lewis and Harris. The Callanish Standing Stones are only a twenty-minute drive away, the Blackhouse Village at Garenin is under half an hour by car, Uig Bay where the Lewis Chessmen were found is only forty-five minutes’ drive, and you can be walking along the white sandy shores of mesmerising Luskentyre Beach on Harris in under an hour.

Having Stornoway within easy walking distance is really where you can go out for food and drinks and avoid a hefty taxi trip home. Stornoway has some great things to see and do, including hiring bikes, enjoying a round of golf at the excellent Stornoway Golf Club, established in 1890, great value fly fishing for salmon, sea trout and wild brown trout on the River Creed and surrounding Stornoway lochs. An event to be aware of is the Heb Celt Fest in mid-July 2022 (please pre-book), and there are many agricultural shows and highland games to attend throughout the summer months.

The Hebridean Holiday Huts are an excellent choice for a two-night stopover, a short break or even a week-long holiday. The accommodation is of a great standard and the location is perfect for those Hebridean voyagers visiting the isles! Please ensure that you have booked your ferry/plane first before booking your accommodation- due to covid19 there are restrictions in place and these tend to be fully booked in advance, especially in the summer months.

Stornoway, United Kingdom

The location on the outskirts of Stornoway is brilliant. The huts are perfect bases for a range of holidaymakers. Enjoy a two-night stopover, a short break or a week holiday at one of the Hebridean Holiday Huts!. All on the Ground Floor:

Open plan living space.

Living area: Smart TV, Sofa Bed (Double)

Dining area.

Kitchen area: Electric Hob, Microwave, Fridge/Freezer

Bedroom area: Double (4ft 6in) Bed

Shower Room: Cubicle Shower, Toilet. Electric central heating, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Travel cot and highchair available on request. Welcome pack.. External utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, dehumidifier and drying racks (shared with properties on-site). Garden (shared with other properties on-site). 1 dog welcome, to be kept on a lead at all times. Private parking for 1 car. No smoking. Please note: Maximum occupancy consists of 2 adults and 2 children.. Each of the Hebridean Holiday Huts on the outskirts of Stornoway are ideal as places to base yourself when visiting the Isle of Lewis. These bespoke, spacious huts have been created by the owner with a lot of care, attention and thought for those visiting and using them as boltholes for adventures in the Outer Hebrides.

Lewis can be booked together with Harris (UK34048) and Uist (UK34049) to accommodate up to 6 adults and 6 children.

Free WiFi

Please note: Maximum occupancy consists of 2 adults and 2 children.

Please make sure you have booked your ferry/plane before booking your accommodation. There can be limited availability on these, especially in the summer months.

Town: Balallan meaning Allan's Town, is a crofting township on Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Balallan is within the parish of Lochs. The township is the longest village, being four miles in Lewis, and also in northern Scotland. Straggled along the head of a long sea loch between Arivruach and Laxay, it formed due to a mixture of crofting along the loch shore and fishing. It sits at the head of Loch Erisort. - "This is going to sound ridiculous--there are so many awesome things about this place, from the view to the high-tech everything to the fantastically deep bathtub--but as an American on a road trip through Scotland, I was *so excited* to have a real, actual, American-style clothes dryer to do laundry! So many rentals in Europe have those air-fluff washer/dryer combos, or just plain old drying racks for wet clothes, so to have a full-fledged electric dryer was the height of luxury. Silly, I know. The place was stocked with everything we needed, including the best strawberries ever to go with a bottle of champagne that was kindly left for us. The management was responsive and communicative, and the views at this place are unreal. Bring along a little pack of cat treats for the neighbor's sweet kitties who visit in the evening if you're an animal lover!"

Drop into the Islander Shellfish to see what’s fresh off the boat to cook up at home.

Alternatively, hop on one of the many boat trips leaving from Stornoway, Miavaig, Tarbert or Leverburgh. There’s so much to do and see on both Lewis and Harris that you’ll want to be out exploring every day. Return from your daily adventures to your cosy cottage to unwind.

There are lots of fantastic local walks if you fancy spending your days closer to home. Take the dog for a walk to visit the stunning Tiumpan lighthouse only a 25-minute walk away (4 min drive).

Use a local taxi service or nearby bus route to pop into Stornoway for a visit to one of the pubs and restaurants. Return to your wee cottage at the end of the evening to enjoy some well-earned relaxation.

Take the chance to experience the legendary Lewis summer sunsets and the beautiful Northern Lights in winter with some of the darkest night skies around. As the Western Isles is fortunate enough to be blessed with a micro-climate of its own, you are sheltered from some of the colder spells the rest of Scotland faces in the winter months.

Whatever you decide to do with your stay I expect you’ll fall in love with the Outer Hebrides. Once you do it never leaves you!

Chì mi thu a dh’ aithghearr
- Scots Gaelic for "See you soon.”

Guest access
Self check-in via key box.

Two large steps to enter the property and gravelled driveway approach therefore may be unsuitable for guests with restricted mobility.

Other things to note
Up to two well behaved house trained dogs are welcome at no extra cost. Please use your own throw/blanket to protect furniture and linens. If leaving dog alone for any period of time then your dog must be safely crated. One large dog crate can be provided upon advanced request. Please bring own dog bedding.

A friendly & inquisitive border collie and 2 cats live within the grounds. The gate to the main grounds must always be left open. Therefore, please ensure dogs are kept on lead within the grounds.

Guests are kindly requested to remain quiet in outside areas after 10pm out of respect for neighbours and in keeping with the quiet village location.

Sorry, no smoking.

Please arrange your travel at the same time as booking your accommodation.

Ferry services to the island are available to Tarbert and Stornoway and are provided by Caledonian Macbrayne ferries. We advise you book in advance and at same time as accommodation is booked as the ferry can get booked up during peak times.

Travel insurance is recommended for your trip to the Islands. Sometimes our ferries and planes get weather bound or can’t travel due to technical issues. Usually, the next available ferry is within a day therefore it is best to make sure your plans are somewhat flexible a day either side.

Scottish licencing is strict regarding guest occupancy limits which means that the number of people staying at the property must never exceed the guest limit, 2 in total (including children). Please ensure that the total guest count is accurately reflected in your booking information.

**Travel info: Please book ferry travel well in advance ⛴️

The space
Our traditional open fire in the living room makes the cottage super cosy 🏡

After a day out and about ~ exploring the sights and enjoying the scenery ~ coming back to relax in front of the open fire, lounging on the couch or chilling in our comfy vintage rocking chair with a cuppa and some snacks is the perfect way to end the day! 🔥

We have a few logs, kindling, fire lighters and some peats from our own High Borve peat bank to get your fire going (more logs available to buy at Borve shop 5 mins along the road)

The cottage also has hive-controlled electric heating in the rooms.

If you fancy a movie night or a catch-up of your favourite shows ~ Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iplayer + more are available on the smart TV in the living room 📺

Free Wi-Fi is available ~ handy for checking out our local restaurants and cafes online, planning and booking your excursions and day trips. We also have a good selection of books to read by the fireside 📚

The cottage kitchen has a little window snug where you can relax while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil.
We have:
a rangemaster oven, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, kettle, toaster and cafetière, pans, frying pan, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware. Tea, coffee, sugar, cooking oil, salt and pepper are provided ☕️

Our bathroom has: electric shower, a nice bath to soak in with some bubbles 🫧 after a day of Island activities and a heated towel rail for extra coziness. Towels are provided 🛀🏾

We also have some lovely Ishga organic seaweed body and hand wash in the bathroom ~ it has their signature seaweed extract with lavender, rose geranium and lemongrass essential oils vitamins & minerals 🚿

The bedroom has: a comfy double bed, snuggly duvet and soft bed linen which, along with the fresh island air, will ensure you get some good quality zzz’s while you are here 🛌

You can hang up your clothes in our beautiful vintage wardrobe, which has been in the cottage for many years and was beautifully restored by the previous owner Barbara.

You will also find the hairdryer in one of the pigeon holes.

Our little cupboard in the hall has a few essentials ~ hoover, iron, ironing board, steam mop, washing basket, pegs and rotary washing line which can be put up in the courtyard.

You can hang your jackets up and leave your outdoor gear and shoes in the front porch. On a calm night it is also lovely to relax on our bench outside the porch and watch the sunset 🌅

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire cottage, the courtyard and bin store area at the side of the house 🏡

Other things to note
We have a lovely private stone-walled courtyard at the side of the house which is actually the remaining walls of the original black house.

There is a picnic bench for some al fresco dining and a cute little fire pit to toast marshmallows while watching the sun set ~ we really do have the most beautiful sunsets on the westside 🌅

Although the cottage is a bungalow, it is built on a hill so there are two steps down from the living room to the kitchen and two steps from the kitchen to the back door.

The bathroom is also very narrow and ‘snug’ - typical of an old croft house! Unfortunately this means that it is not accessible for wheelchairs.
