Most Romantic Spot Ever - Beach Hideaway Steps from the Beach
House
Freeland, Washington, USA

Designed by famed waterfront architect Robert Maloney, the Beach Hideaway will take your breath away. With its two bedrooms, 2.5 baths, gourmet kitchen, 42' Plasma HDTV and surround sound in the living room, massive river rock fireplace, decks to the water, and private hot tub, this bungalow sits on a private sandspit and has more charm and amenities than any waterfront getaway anywhere in Puget Sound. Once you arrive, you won’t want to leave-it’s amazing (just read some of the reviews, many from honeymooners).

Set on a private spit of land in Puget Sound, this wood beamed cottage was originally built in the 1950s (when you could still build right on the beach). It is so remote that you have to use a four wheel drive Kawasaki Mule to even get to it. But don’t worry, it’s the Lexus of its class with comfortable, covered seating for four, plus plenty of luggage space.

Everywhere, we strive to keep the best of the old, while incorporating the finest in modern touches and charm to make your stay nothing short of wondrous. We’ve even incorporated what the beach has given us for décor: driftwood retainer wall in the courtyards, and an old, long forgotten, abandoned beach beam from some far away land as our mantle.

You have your own private beach with driftwood, clams, mussels, oysters, and so much to explore, as there are no other homes adjacent in either direction. The state of the art hot tub, away from prying eyes, where the ladies might relax with their wine, while the guys take a boat for fishing with a beer. Or maybe you’ll all venture out in kayaks we can arrange for you.

Inside, you’ll find that the best of the old beach cabin with its old growth beams have been painstakingly preserved to former richness by Ron Milne, Master Refinisher. They are enhanced with rich slate, nails head flooring, warm wall treatment, and designer lighting to set the mood to make those special moments.

The furnishings, like all of Whidbey Retreats (WR) properties, is the finest. What a great place to watch the theatre level satellite cinema system, or to just curl up with the stereo surround, toes tucked under one of our oversized throws, while enjoying the flames of the river rock fireplace. Or listen to nothing more than the lapping waves that will do their best to still and comfort your soul. And, the only sounds you will hear will not be people, but the bald eagles that live in high aeries above along the shore; their cries that pierce the air are so distinctive. (Be sure to bring your camera, especially to capture the mottled brown of the young eagles less than three years old.)

Also, like the other WR properties, the house is a veritable art gallery, with each key painting set with museum lighting. These are some of the finest from the owner’s private collection of over 300 pieces, and are meant to evoke a sense of romance and sensuality.

The kitchen is a gourmet chefs dream-you’ll want to go home and redo your own, except that you won’t likely have a setting like this where you are viewing the ocean only feet from the kitchen window. It has every amenity with slate counters, stainless appliances, and all the utensils you will need to make those special meals for your special getaway. There’s even a serving bar. It’s set up with a couple of eating stools for the quick meal or to perfectly present the cocktail hour martinis (Bombay Sapphire straight, very dry, with two olives for us)!.

At night the dining table sits surrounded by glass with a beautiful chandelier, which you may want to dim to see the lights of the boats on the ocean. Of course, there is both formal outdoor dining, or our favorite is to be casual with the table side luxury chaise lounge chairs. Of course, there is a professional BBQ at your disposal. Or the unprofessional BBQ in the form of your own beach fire pit where you roast hot dogs and have smores on the beach. Yum!

- "We really enjoyed this place. Wish we had more time, as it's well located to explore the peninsula. Well stocked, very comfortable, etc." - "Property was a pleasure to stay in." - "Everything was clean, organized, and had extra toiletries! There were even doggy bags for our pup and it felt like home!" - "We just had a short stay here, unfortunately, as we all enjoyed the house and location and would have gladly stayed longer. The level of cleanliness was spectacular, and the amenities were all there - full line of kitchen gear, comfortable beds, nice sitting areas & outdoor covered deck & propane grill - all of which we used and enjoyed. There is an unofficial trail from the side yard down to the creek that runs into a salt water inlet, which is fun to explore. In addition, it is a short drive to several state parks and to Port Townsend and it's cute shopping district. Our only complaint was that the front door lock seemed not to be working correctly, so we used the garage to enter & exit the house, but that was a minor issue. There is also a back patio door onto the deck for accessing the back yard / grill area. Our dogs were welcome, but there was no pet odor or debris that we could see. The yard is not fenced but is quite large, so that we were able to let our dogs out under supervision. We would happily stay here again, and hope to do so in future."

Guest Reviews:

- "Great location and clean rooms" - "Very tall elegant historic room. Lovingly cared-for. No TV was a surprise initially but it allowed to finish reading a great book I bought at the bookstore a block away. Wonderful coffee shop downstairs with great views of the water." - "Sweet place right on Water Street." - "Really disappointed with our experience. Firstly, we didn’t receive instructions on how to check in, and the contact info provided in confirmation email didn’t work. Secondly, the actual check-in process was cumbersome, with multiple locks/codes needed to enter. Also, we didn’t realize that there would be absolutely no one on site to support (no reception, concierge, or help whatsoever) - very frustrating as the name is Belmont Hotel (we assumed it was an actual hotel). Thirdly, despite leaving the housekeeping sign on our door, we did not have housekeeping come by for the entirety of our stay (3 nights), so we had to re-use wet towels and make our bed (again, this was not mentioned in the description). There are several other places to stay in town that I would recommend above this one. Very disappointing."

Discovery Bay is like a condensed view of the Northwest, offering both ocean and mountain experiences. Visit Sequim, a short 15 miles away, and enjoy the aromatic Lavender this town is famous for. Take a walk along seven-mile Dungeness Spit for views of the Sound. Drive up Hurricane Ridge for a close up look at the Olympic Mountains. Or, just across the strait, enjoy an afternoon of crumpets and tea in Victoria, B.C Canada. Whale watching is also a major attraction, and several tours can be caught from nearby Port Townsend, only 15 miles away from the resort!

You'll be astonished by the range of choices. But you may just want to sit back on your deck, grill up some salmon and look out over the bay-you know, become one with the sea and the sky.

Retro Adventure ~ Cozy Rosie, Restored '55 Trailer
RV Rental
Puget Sound

Rosie’s a cozy, refurbished 1955 Shultz Trailer, snuggled in trees on sustainable Dragonfly Farm 10 minutes from Port Townsend. Rosie is 200 sq ft of wood-paneled comfort, full kitchen, dining/living area, bedroom w/full size bed. Composting toilet is in clean, new outhouse just outside. We’ll start you out with breakfast goodies: oatmeal, fruit, coffee/tea + milk. Small shower includes bodywash/shampoo, lotion & hairdryer. Relax on a spacious deck amidst trees, flowers & our bright red barn.

The space
Kassie & Peter were Superhosts for years near Portland, OR. Now we bring the same care, amenities, and friendliness to our new digs near Port Townsend. We love meeting people from all over. Except for those rare occasions when we’re out of town, we’ll greet you when you arrive and show you how everything works, or chat restaurants and local haunts with you if you like.

While you’re staying in Rosie, we’re happy to have a cup of coffee/tea or a glass of beer/wine with you, or leave you with as much privacy as you want. Need something? Text us and one of us will get back to you quickly.

Rosie’s an adventure in vintage camping (glamping 1950's style), tiny house living and sustainability. While comfortable and full of amenities, she’s small – so not recommended for very tall people! The shower is tight and the hot water tank, while fast and efficient, is small. So if you're a lover of long lingering showers, well, enjoy every brief moment!

We’re creating a small sustainable permaculture farm at Dragonfly; so everything possible goes back to the land. The water from sinks and showers goes through a grey-water system into the ground. And, since this 1955 trailer didn’t have a toilet, there’s a newly built, ocean-themed outhouse just outback. It’s a composting toilet, so your contribution will help fertilize trees on the property, after it’s thoroughly and safely composted – helping the land and nearby Salish Sea! So you’re making Orcas and trees happy!

Please note that this is a no-smoking property.

We look forward to meeting you and helping you have a great stay.

Guest access
There's a parking space for you right in front of Rosie, and more parking on the property in case you have a visiting friend. We're about a quarter mile off of State Route 20, so you have quick and easy access to Port Townsend & to Highway 101.

I work from home, so I am usually around, or available by phone or text to assist with any needs or questions.

Other things to note
If you would like to use the kitchen to cook, please let me know ahead of time so we can coordinate the use of the space.

Please take a moment to review the house rules to make sure we are a good fit for you.

Other things to note
Please note: Our internet connection is DSL/CenturyLink, the best available in our backroads location. Suitable for email, and less bandwidth heavy uses. Not suitable for "work from home"

This is not an amusement park ride. She is a classic 'antique' boat, not actually built for optimum overnight accommodations. She features areas of low head room, several steps up and down to various levels, and an attendant salty boat ambiance. She's 80 years old! Boat people and adventurers love her, but she may not be appropriate for everyone. Also please note, we have a friendly dog on the premises.

Winter weather advisory: During the winter months, the boat is heated by our new heat pump/minisplit. Still, not all areas are equally warm. The pilot house/galley is very comfortable, the bunks are dry and bedding is deep and luxurious. Some might think of it as glamping. Layers and slippers are advised. The shower is outdoors but private for the hardy, with enough hot water for 5-7 minutes of 'experience.' Shower shoes and a robe are helpful. Most guests love it...see reviews.

Additional note: As an actual yacht conversion, hot water heater is small and suitable for short Navy type showers. Ppl who need 50 gal of hot water to shower will not be happy. Suitable for most experienced RV/ Boating travelers tho.
