The villa situated 50 metres from the beach and the centre of Elounda is beautifully decorated and furnished with air conditioning throughout. It has an attractive harbour surrounded by restaurants, cafes and bars. Elounda also has a sandy beach offering water sports and self drive boat hire. The beach and town square are an easy, level, five minute stroll. The harbour side, with another excellent selection of Tavernas is five minutes in the opposite direction. Local buses and taxi services are good and a trip to Plaka, Spinalonga and Agios Nicholas are a must. Elounda and the local area

Elounda and its local area has something to offer for people of all ages and interests, and Villa Karfi’s location means that many of these can be enjoyed without the need to hire a car. Elounda’s sandy Blue Flag beach is award-winning for its cleanliness, and offers inexpensive sunloungers and warm, calm shallow water ideal for swimming. Elounda is near to several important archaeological sites of interest, including the epicentre of Minoan civilisation, Knossos, which is an hour’s drive away, and the sunken city of Olous from which the town takes its name. Centred on a busy square with its church, 2 supermarkets (both of which stay open late), several cafes and bakeries, many bars and restaurants, Elounda also offers a wide variety of shops and holds its own weekly fresh produce market every Friday. One of the most popular attractions in Crete, the island of Spinalonga, is a scenic boat trip away, with boats leaving Elounda harbour every 30 minutes during the holiday season. The town of Agios Nikolaos is a 20-minute drive away - buses leave regularly from the village square. The Elounda ‘fun train’ takes visitors up the coast to Plaka (the village closest to Spinalonga) and then travels up into the surrounding hills for a fascinating tour of traditional Cretan villages. There are extensive walking trails all around the local area, many offering spectacular views of Spinalonga and the Bay of Mirabello. Other nearby attractions which are within an hour’s drive include two major water parks, the aquarium of Crete, and the Lasithi plateau. There are several travel agents in the village which provide reasonably-priced car, quad bike, scooter, mountain bike, boat and kayak hire as well as many tailored excursions, including scuba and snorkelling trips and all-day tours of Knossos.

During the winter months Elounda often experiences mild weather and number of restaurants and bars in the village remain open all year. The village supermarkets also operate year round.

Getting around

The villa is a short walk (9 minutes) from the main village harbour square with its many tavernas, cafes, shops and beach, with no significant gradients to negotiate (unlike many others in the area!) Cars can be parked in the village for free if required, and there is disabled parking provision very close to the major amenities. Heraklion airport is 65km (1 hour) drive on a high-quality modern road, and Heraklion itself, Crete’s largest city, is well worth a visit. Agios Nikolaos is 10km away, with regular buses from the village centre. A large number of small villages, some of which boast some superb tavernas, are all within a short driving radius of Elounda.

Villa had everything needed, beautifully presented and the welcome pack was so much appreciated. Very quiet area but easy access. We have stayed in other villas in Greece before and some of the roads up to them have been much trickier to negotiate. The only mentions I would make is that it would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues as the property is over three floors so lots of steps and probably not suitable for families either for the same reason. The kitchen is extremely spacious and is fully fitted with a Neff oven and microwave as well as a cooking island which is fitted with a Neff induction hob and extractor as well as top of the range American Fridge/Freezer, Miele Dishwasher, Bosch washing machine and Nespresso Coffee Machine .

Recommended." - "When we went to check in at the Elounda Olive Gardens, we were met with a notice on the door to ring their sister hotel, Elounda Residence. We were then informed that they had shut the apartments for the winter and we were now staying in the Elounda Residence. Although a better hotel, it was miles from the village and we had deliberately not chosen that hotel because of the location. It was on a very steep hill, with amazing views, but our room was the furthest away from the reception and pool areas, even higher up the hill. We are very sprightly 70 year olds, luckily, as anyone with walking difficulties would have struggled. We were on a self catering basis but most of the hotel was all inclusive, so it was a pain to have to get down to the village for breakfast and again for the evening meal. There was a shuttle service, but the last bus went at 5 pm. Unless you want an all inclusive hotel, this one is not for you!"

A beautiful house located in the traditional village of Epano Elounda. Just 1 km from the city centre of Elounda, the village is quite and non touristic, ideal for walks in the traditional cobbled streets where you could also find some old 'kafenions' serving Greek coffee and refreshments.
The house has recently been fully refurbished and has one double bedroom, an open space sitting area and a fully equipped kitchen. The sofa can be turned into a bed which can sleep two persons. Moreover, there is a beautiful private front yard equipped with garden furniture, with a few plants and a large olive tree, where you can enjoy your breakfast or relax in the evening. There are plenty of free parking spaces around the house.

Here are some directions in order to get to the house by car. You must drive around 1,5km after leaving Schisma Elountas (the small town on the sea shore). Then, you drive with direction to Epano Elounta (Upper Elounda). When reaching the entrance of the village you must turn right to enter, and then the first street right again. Then you drive downhill around 100m and at the left turn you must stop and park on the dead end alley. You’re there!

Below you will find some information about the most important sights of the village as well as activities that you can experience all year long in our place. All historic information has been derived from the book of Dr. M. Makrakis, Elounda-Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga, Their History, 2011.
SPINALONGA: after the end of the forth Venetian – Ottoman war, Crete remained as the last Venetian colony in the eastern Mediterranean. Inevitably, their interest was focused on this island which had many great problems during that period. The fall of Cyprus was the reason why the castle of Spinalonga was built. The choice of the position of the castle was made due to the fact that the Bay of Elounda was ideal for the landing of the Ottoman armada and because on the islet, the ruins of an ancient fortress already existed the stones of which could be used for the Venetian fortifications. The name of Spinalonga originated from the Venetian words Spina(thorn) and Lunga (long). The lattest book which became a best seller recounting the passions of love, tragedy human pain and the power of the soul on Spinalonga in the years 1940-44, is the “The Island”, by British novelist Victoria Hislop. Since 2000, efforts have been made by the local community and the municipality for the inclusion in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage Sites.
ALYKES OF ELOUNDA: Lying to the east of the shorefront settlement of Schisma, on the west part of ancient Olous, the salt pans are a monument and witness to local history and to the culture of salt. For seven crucial centuries the salt pans of Elounda played an influential role in the area’s history and the survival of its population. The high salt content of the waters in the Bay of Elounda and the favorable climatic conditions-(long-term sunshine and windy environment), were the reasons the Venetians created the salt pans of Elounda in the 13th century. For almost 7 centuries, the pans produced high quality salt which reached a production of one thousand tons in the 1960s. Salt was a monopolized item and of course more important in every day life than today, as it was the only available means of preserving food stuff. The pans played an important part in the sustenance and survival of the citizens of Elounda in times of peace but even more importantly in times of poverty and unrest. Today they represent a unique ecosystem – a natural hatchery for fish and refuge for different species of migratory birds. Over the last few years an effort has been made by local society and the Municipality for the creation of a salt and whetstone museum in Hiona, a storage-house for the salt.
WINDMILLS: The windmills pre-industrial factories and treasured memories for the locals, are a remarkable invention and a successful example of ecological thinking and the exploitation of the inexhaustible power of the wind for the production of flour, the main ingredient for the most basic of all foods, bread. In areas where there were no springs, like Agios Nikolaos and Elounda numerous windmills existed, remaining in operation until the settlement was deserted in 1690-1715. Windmills were built in groups called “Milotopia” and were usually positioned in areas where moderated winds blew constantly. In Elounda, the Milotopia were by the Canal Poros, in Pines area and to the east of lower Pines.
THE EARLY CHRISTIAN BASILICA IN POROS: is one of the archaeological site of Ancient Olous, about one hundred meters east of the Canal. During the excavations for the opening of the Canal (1897-98)the French army carried out experimental digs in the area, during which a part of the Basilica with a mosaic was uncovered. The fact that inscriptions of the Ancient Olous treaty were utilized indicates that the area where the Basilica was built, once housed the administrative centre of Olous, or was the place where the temple of Vritomartis or Zeus Tallaios stood and the first Christians used the materials and stoned they had at hand. In the later years, during the 16th century, the building material from the Basilica and from ancient Olous was used to build Spinalonga fortress.
THE CANAL: During the last Cretan revolution (1897-98), the enforcement of law and the cessation of hostilities in the Mirambello and Siteia area was assumed by the Fremch army, a regiment of which had installed themselves on Spinalonga under the leadership of captain Emile- Amedee Dupourque, whilst the French fleet under the Admiral Edouard Pottier dropped anchor in a small cove to the east of Poros and patrolled Mirambello Bay and the sea off Siteia. The French army then decided to dig through the small portion of land connecting the peninsula with Elounda side, effectively turning it into an island. The main instigator of this plan was Dupourque who met with Michalis Sfakianakis in Neapoli and explained the importance of the building of the canal for transportation purposes, as a consequence the work began on February 27, 1897 and was completed the in the spring of the following year. The construction of the 170m long and 8 m wide canal meant that Elounda Bay was now joined to Mirambello Bay and that the sea route to Agios Nikolaos became 4 nautical miles shorter. Until 1955 when the road to Agios Nikolaos was opened this was the only way of communication. A small wooden bridge was then built to facilitate the Eloundians passage to their land on the other side. In 1935, a drawbridge was built by a carpenter from Neapoli. The frequent damage to the bridge by the rough seas and the need for the passage of cars to the other side was the reason that the Commune decided in 1962 to construct the reinforced cement one which still exists today about 40m north of the wooden one.
THE SUNKEN ANCIENT OLOUS: As the numerous archaeological digs have proved , Elounda was inhabited from Minoan times. Olous a township built on Poros the isthmus whick connects the Cretan mainland with the peninsula across the Bay was one of the one hundred significant cities in ancient Crete. It flourished during ancient times as the excavation of the Apotheantes proves it thrived during the classical Hellenistic and roman eras. Today a large part of ancient Olous is submerged , various parts of the sunken city can be seen when the sea is calm: just outside the church of Analipsi at Oxo Poro;to the west pf the canal, at Kouloura, Tsibaki and Bathi. The inhabitants of Olous were culturally and professionaly developed and were occupied with maritime trade and the processing of murex shells, from which they extracted color and dyes such as the Tyrian or Royal Purple. They also mind, manufactured and traded whetstones. Archaeological finds from this site can be seen in the museums of Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion and the Louvre as well as in the archaeological collection in Neapoli.

AUTUMN ACTIVITIES: Autumn is a nice and not that crowded period to visit Crete while some very interesting local activities take place and we strongly recommend that you experience indicative ones raki distillation process (the Cretan traditional alcohol drink), vegetables collection or planting gardening.
WINTER ACTIVITIES: Many people think that the island is only for summer holidays, although even in winter Crete is a perfect destination. During November till late March the climate offers mild winters with many sunny days with pleasant temperatures. Locals are "more active" than summer, since there is a range of other works for them to deal with such as the olive groves, fruit gardens, etc. Sheep graze the fresh green from the mountains. When coming to meet Cretan companionship there's no better season than winter, touring around by car, or hiking on country side, biking, bird watching or just strolling through cities will offer you surely a relaxed time. Specifically in December and January, you can join the olive harvesting and follow the entire oil production from harvest to olive oil or during February you take part in fruits’ and wild herbs’ collection. We can inform you and arrange local activities depending on the period!
SPRING ACTIVITIES: Spring time is a perfect season for walking or hiking and during your walk you will discover unique botanic beauties and smells. If you decide to come this season you will encounter one very attractive face of Crete, that will offer you a carpet of flowers, high mountains capped with snow and villages in their everyday routine.
EASTER HOLIDAYS: Easter is possibly the best experience you can have on Crete! Normally it is in mid spring season when all the Nature flourishes again, flowers’ and herbs’ smells are all around and all the nearby villages have their own way to celebrate this big Greek Chistian festivity.
