- "I came to Gero on a recommendation from a close friend. I somehow missed it when I had done a previous Takayama trip and I am glad I came back. The town is very small and the hotel is easily walkable from the station, some people say 15 mins but it was more like 8-10 mins and that was while stopping to take pictures of the Hida river. Great location for the hotel, close to everything. The Onsen in this hotel alternate between male and female daily so you will have a chance to experience both outdoor and both indoor ones as well as the carbonated one in just one overnight stay. I booked online through hotels.com and didn't select the breakfast for an additional 10,000 yen. I assumed I could add it there in cash which was a mistake. When I arrived they told me that to add breakfast it was 27,000 yen, almost triple the price. When I showed them the offer and explained the situation they offered me it for 22,000 yen. I declined because that is still over double the price I could have had it. This was very disappointing but I understand that online has different offers than the hotel. It was my mistake and I regret not ordering at time of purchase, don't make that same mistake. Hotel is very old, it is still nice but I imagine it was amazing when new. The elevators are so confusing, you will need to take several and transfer between them on different floors to get anywhere unless you stay on the mail floor I guess. You will figure it out but the first time is confusing."

- "My family stayed at this ryokan for two nights in November. We would recommend staying here for the experience of a Japanese inn and the fact that it is very authentic. We found the staff to be professional and polite. The drawback is the inn is located in an area quite a distance from the center of town and from all of the temples and shrines. If we were not a family of walkers it would have been a problem. We also reserved and had the dinners each evening which was a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Do not be afraid of "sleeping on the floor." It is very comfortable and we slept well! The experience is a MUST during a trip to Japan."

- "good" - "Check-in is strictly at 3pm so if you are early, be prepared to leave your luggage first and talk a walk around the area. There are only 4-5 parking slots available within property so be sure to check-in earliest possible. Plenty of amenities available in lobby for you to take, including bath robes and eye masks. Rooms were big and the tatami area was comfortable to relax in. Beds were a little hard but still acceptable. It is like a serviced apartment where there are stoves and cooking utensils available, including microwave, spatula and tableware. Housekeeping is only done every 3 days and this date is agreed during check-in. If you accidentally hung the DO NOT DISTURB sign on your door, you will have to wait another 3 days for housekeeping. This is non-negotiable and it happened during my stay. The night staff on the 3rd night agreed for housekeeping to be arranged on the 4th morning but it never happened. Reception staff even tried to downplay the miscommunication and bargained to not provivde more towels as it is 2 pax staying in a 4 pax room. Even if DND sign is out, staff is supposed to change towels and clear the rubbish but this did not happen. Reception staff again tried to dismiss this thus both my friend and I are thoroughly disappointed in this matter."

This is "Washoku Sumire" in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, famous for its cutlery. We rent out a single 8-tatami Japanese-style room with veranda.
