- "We had a wonderful time at this ryokan. We chose this inn specifically for its remote location and traditional atmosphere and were not disappointed. The hotel, outdoor onsen, and woodsy surroundings were all excellent. The building is old and reminded me of the railroad lodges of the western United States: creaky old doors and floors, metal keys, and rotary dial phones. Other than the hotel, there are no restaurants nearby (that I know of) and dinner is an elaborate kaiseki ryori that requires advanced reservations. They were able to accommodate us for dinner when we arrived around 3:00 pm, but I recommend emailing prior to your stay to be sure you have dinner reservations for your first night if you want to eat there. Otherwise, there is instant ramen in the gift shop and hot water in the room. The staff are all very friendly. Most do not speak English but did their best to communicate with us and we were able to check in and out, make dinner and breakfast arrangements, and discuss the bus schedule without a problem. If you're coming from the south or southwest, I recommend the Hida Limited Express train to get to Takayama, then the public bus to the hotel. The train and bus rides are both wonderful scenic rides into the mountains. "

We have stayed at many onsen, all over Japan, usually moderately priced, once in a blue moon at a high end onsen. This small but lovely ryokan with private baths is moderately priced, not low cost, but not the most extravagant by any means. The quality of the stay, however, rivaled any we have stayed at in elegance, beauty of location, charm of facility and especially in the kaiseki feasts they prepared for us at dinner and breakfast. We took a non smoking, mountain view Japanese style room. It had a private wooden tub outside on the veranda with a spectacular mountain view, and an additional separate onsen tub inside the room as well. Each room is like a mini onsen with seated shower for cleansing beside the tub, as well as sink/counter area with hairdryer. They even provide a scale, really unusual! Food was unbelievably delicious. We generally enjoy traditional communal onsen but our friends who were visiting from the US preferred this private-tubs-only ryokan so we booked here and we all were absolutely thrilled with the experience. Yes our room had a couple of scratches on the wall but was otherwise very very nice. Our friends’ room was perfect with platform beds, beautiful. This was a highlight of their first trip to Japan. And we’ve never had a better meal anywhere in Japan. "

We had unlimited use of the onsen which had both indoor and outdoor facilities - you can see the mountains. Food will be difficult to obtain outside since the location is quite remote. Nevertheless we ordered a dinner set meal which consists of hida beef and was serve right to us in our room. Service was very nice from all the hotel staffs right from the doorstep, eventhough English was spoken in minimum but they managed to make us feel welcomed. Matsunoi Hotel is situated away from all the hustle and bustle of the city and if you need a place a relax and unwind, it comes highly recommended."

- "My partner and I wanted to experience a night in the middle of the mountains during winter preferably with meals and outdoor onsen included at a reasonable price. My partner had never seen snow before, and although we spent the night prior in Takayama where it was snowing - travelling 2.5hrs (usually 1.5hrs but we were commuting in heavy snow!) to Nakaodaira we both agree was definitely worth it if you are wanting to see the countryside and have a true authentic Japanese experience. I would suggest arriving around noon on your first day so you can ease into relaxation mode and appreciate the surroundings in daylight (the scenery during the trip their is also magnificent!), enjoy a sunset/evening onsen before dinner that night. Time goes slow here, and you will have time to try one of the other onsens (2 x outdoor or 3 x indoor onsens available) prior to breakfast and check out the following day. The staff has so much initiative and helped me plan my route to/from the hotel most effectively which ended up saving us a lot of time and money! They also collected us from the bus stop on the day of our arrival which is a relief as you really do feel like you are far away from everything. Food was delicious and we loved the little hand written notes that described what was on each plate (a great souvenir!). I will recommend a night here to friends who want an off the beaten track experience, absolutely!"
