- "The property is well located in the centre of Hawes within reach of all village amenities. The views from the property are spectacular. We were a large group and were very comfortable. There was plenty of hot water, we were warm and the kitchen facilities were great for us to cater for ourselves. We had some difficulty finding the key box as there are two but it was no problem in the end. In the property there are loads of keys and loads of doors, these could be better labeled. This minor frustration was more than compensated for by the rest of the property which is perfect for a large group."

Entry to this spacious apartment is through the main front door, private to the apartment, opening into a porch with beautiful stained glass and through to a splendid hallway with beautiful Victorian floor tiles typical of the era and a good place to leave coats and shoes. A staircase rises from the hallway to a large landing leading to two bedrooms, a bathroom and a generous lounge with dining area and adjacent kitchen. Both bedrooms have king size beds and the main bedroom at the rear has wonderful views to the nearby fellsides. The elegant tiled, bathroom has a bath with an overhead shower, washbasin and toilet. - "We have been coming here for several years and have never been disappointed. The location is great, parking a bonus and the property itself has everything you could need. It is spacious and comfortable with beautiful views from every window. Lots of walks and places to visit in the local area. Plenty of places to eat and drink. Local shops and Tuesday market means it is also easy to cook at the flat. People very friendly and welcoming." - "We've been coming back to this flat for years - it's just perfect for us (couple who enjoy walking). The owners, Shirley and Steve, have put lots of personal touches (it doesn't feel like a rental, more like someone's special retreat). The beds are really comfy, rooms spacious and elegant, kitchen small but well-equipped, and a lovely deep bath is there for a soak when needed. It's perfectly located - a couple of hundred yards from the centre of town, easy walk to pubs and cafes. Parking spot right outside (off street). Has two bedrooms, would suit two couples. Strongly recommend! Trish and Fraser"

- "Very unique stay at Kestrel Yurt, food was beautiful and Jo is a fab host. Was great to meet the chickens too and enjoy a walk into Hawes and back with some great little shops to have a browse and plenty of choice for food and drink. Shame about the weather as we couldn’t bring ourselves to brave the hot tub in the wind and rain. But a great feature and loved the log fire in the yurt kept us very toasty once we got the hang of it. "

Town: Market town Hawes, North Yorkshire, is a major tourist destination in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is known as one of the park's honeypots. The town is ideally situated for exploring Wensleydale and the surrounding dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale, and Chapel-le-Dale, as it sits between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss. The Hawes Town Trail, the Millennium Walk, the Pennine Way, or the nearby River Ure are all excellent options for a stroll. The English Tourist Board's Silver Award for "Best Day Trip Out" went to Hawes in 1998. A farmers' auction draws sheep farmers from all across northern England, despite the fact that modern vehicles have long since replaced horse-drawn carriages on the town's tiny streets. But market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is lively as ever.

Awake to beautiful views out across the Yorkshire Dales when you stay at this welcoming cottage in the pretty village of Burtersett. Sleeping four guests, the cosy, two-bedroom bolthole, which is 1.5 miles from Hawes, is perfect for a small family or two couples away together. With a roaring wood burner set into a gorgeous natural stone hearth and a courtyard garden, where you can enjoy the fresh country air, this inviting hideaway is a year-round treat.
Take two steps up to enter and make yourselves immediately at home in the magical lounge/diner. Sink back into the sofa and toast your toes by the wood burner after your bracing autumn and winter walks. Take in a couple of episodes of your favourite box set before wandering through to the kitchen to prepare a bubbling dish with the Wensleydale cheese you have bought at the creamery in Hawes. Call everyone through to gather round the table to dine together back through in the main room. There is also a small breakfast bar in the kitchen for more casual meals. The family bathroom, where you can soak in a long, hot bubble bath, is also downstairs. At the end of each relaxing day, climb the stairs up to the first floor, there a 90 degree turn on the staircase and handrail on side to aide, where a double bedroom and a room with a splendid, four-poster, king-size are situated. Have breakfast out in the courtyard garden on fine mornings before heading off on your next adventure.
Stride straight out from the cottage on long walks across the magnificent Dales. Walk into Hawes to stock up on local produce, dine out in a friendly pub and visit the Dales Countryside Museum. The impressive Aysgarth Falls, which were used as a backdrop during the filming of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, are 8 miles from the cottage.

- "Our stay was ok, however the central heating switched off every 15 minutes and tripped the consumer unit, i had to reset it many times to keep warm in such a lovely cottage, this spoilt it for us unfortunately. If the heating had stayed on we would rate this cottage very highly. We contacted the customer service office many times over the week but the problem was not resolved and nobody seemed to understand the issue, they just came in and reset the central heating switch in the consumer unit but did not solve the problem"

My cottage is positioned on the edge of Burtersett, a tiny, tranquil village set away from the main road in the heart of Wensleydale. It has glorious, far-reaching views across the dale from the sitting room, sitting-out area and main bedroom. Just a 20-minute walk across gorgeous meadows to the town of Hawes and the Pennine Way, it is an ideal centre for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. There are walks in all directions from the cottage itself.
The space
A cosy and comfortable 19th century quarrymen's terrace, the cottage has been recently renovated to a high standard offering tasteful and welcoming accommodation.
The sitting/dining room has a flagstone floor and woodburner (with enough wood and kindling for one fire). There is a sofa, two armchairs, sturdy dining table and four chairs. To the right of the fireplace is a games cupboard. You'll find plenty of books, maps and guides on the shelves. There is Wi-Fi, freeview TV and a DVD player (top RH edge of the TV).
Also on the ground floor are a fully equipped kitchen (with capacious fridge) and bathroom, which has both a bath and a fixed shower over. You'll find the microwave and washing machine in the kitchen cupboard.
Upstairs—these are fairly steep, characteristic of a Victorian workers' cottage, but with handrail—there are two double bedrooms. The front bedroom is the larger of the two, with room for a travel cot (not supplied by the cottage) if required. It also has a wonderful view of Wensleydale. The second bedroom is quite small, but has a nice comfy double bed, bedside tables with drawers, and a shelf and hooks for clothes.
The cottage is heated by electric-powered central heating, newly installed in October 2024. Please don't adjust the settings, but—if you need to—use the boost button on the top of the control unit by the kitchen door (water on the left, room heating on the right). Towels are included.
The back door from the sitting room leads on to a small paved area with a gravel strip for table and chairs (there are two spare chairs in the kitchen cupboard) ... and an unforgettable view of the Dales beyond. There is no fence or wall between the cottage's space and those of my neighbours (the path leads off to some steps down to the lane in one direction) — so those of you with toddlers might want to bear that in mind.
Guest access
There is space for two cars in the yard immediately outside the front of the cottage. This space is shared by our neighbours and is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Alternatively, there are spaces for a few cars near the telephone box (at right angles to the road) a few metres away. There are always plenty of parking spaces either side of the lane at the top of the village, about 100 metres up the hill.
Other things to note
Here are a few tips for you (please note, some details may have changed since the pandemic) :
1. Walks from Burtersett. You don't even need to get into the car if you are keen on walking. There's as lovely, short round walk from the bottom of the steps at the back of the cottage, over the fields to the lane, then turn right and right again to make your way back to the village.
I adore the simple walk along the lane towards Countersett, although I usually turn up the Roman Road a little way past the waterfall bend.
The walk to Hawes (set off from the Old Chapel just a few metres up the hill) over the fields is a wonder. You can come back via Gayle - or go that way, following the track at the top of the village (called Shaws Lane).
If you're quite hardy walkers, head up Wether Fell on the track at the top of the village from our good friends' lovely house Rigg End. You can do a great round walk over to Marsett and Semer Water that way: it takes a few hours. Or else cross the Roman Road, head along the ridge and take the path further along back down to Burtersett (about 90 mins).
The Wether Fell track has several branch paths. There's one that takes you looping round the summit. Another, which has become a favourite, is a difficult-to-find turning off to the right before you get to the top which heads back down towards Hawes, meeting up with the Shaws Lane track running between Burtersett and Gayle. Pretty steep in places, so take care.
The walk along the old railway embankment to Bainbridge is a favourite, but you have to negotiate the stepping stones first (which are fun, but ONLY passable when the water is low).
2. Local pubs and tea shops: recommended are the White Hart in Hawes (for food); Middle House and Kings Arms in Askrigg; Green Dragon in Hardraw; Foresters Arms in Carlton in Coverdale. The Bainbridge tea shop is great, the Bainbridge pub, less so.
Upmarket restaurants: Yorebridge House in Bainbridge and Simonstone Hall near Hardraw are recommended by many.
3. Trips further afield: Semer Water in Raydale is lovely. Check out Stalling Busk and the fabulous tea shop there (where you can buy Raydale preserves ... but I'm not sure it's still there). Sedbusk, for the view. For waterfalls, Hardaw Force is impressive (buy tickets at the pub), as are the falls at Aysgarth, and worth a trip, but expect crowds. Bolton Castle is indeed a great castle — and also popular.
For countryside, Coverdale and Walden are our favourites, but there are lovely walks everywhere: up through the woods from Askrigg, Hawes over the fields to Sedbusk ... a book on local walks will offer you many.
There is much more to discover a short car trip away. Do go over to Muker in Swaledale: a spectacular 20-minute drive over Buttertubbs. Park in the lay-by on the right as you enter the village (free, unlike the car park) and head up the river towards Keld. I like to come back via the Pennine Way. The tea shop in Muker is terrific, but, beware, check out its closing time (3.45 pm in the summer) before you plan your day.
The whole of Swaledale is very special. Lovely pub in Gunnerside too.

Quirky, stylish and very central.
This charming cottage will accommodate 2 people and boasts all the facilities expected from a much larger property. What the cottage lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in location and home comforts. Literally a stone’s throw from the famous waterfalls of Gayle Beck and a few minutes walk from Hawes’ historic Market Square with its numerous shops, cafes and pubs, ‘The Shop on the Bridge’ is an ideal bolthole for a mini break away from it all.
The space
As you step into The Shop on The Bridge you will enter the modern fitted kitchen with fully fitted oven, hob and extractor along with the stylish quartz worktops and small breakfast bar. Guest access
You will have access to the full house, it is a privately accessed cottage via the front door directly from the street at Town Foot.
There is no dedicated parking at the cottage but 'drop off' and 'pick up' of luggage is accepted by parking briefly opposite the cottage.
Parking generally in Hawes is very good with several opportunities for free parking in the direct vicinity either in the free 'Town Foot' car park which is C.50m from the cottage or the various free 'on street' parking opportunities all under 100m from the cottage. There is paid long stay parking at the Ropeworks which is very reasonable, in the event that the free opportunities are busy.

Large lounge with open fire. Kitchen with lovely Rayburn as well as cooker, hob, microwave, washer, dishwasher too. Downstairs loo. Dining room with open fire and seating area. Upstairs a single bedroom overlooking the fells to the back, family bedroom with double and single beds. Large main bedroom with ensuite shower and basin. All beds have electric blankets for that extra special treat! The bathroom has a shower attachment over bath, basin and loo. The cottage is heated with night storage heaters and also back up intelligent electric heaters. There is a lovely front garden with bench seat and picnic bench, a courtyard with small table and chairs and large rear paddock is shared with small cottage next door.
FYI- we have a typical dales public footpath which is behind a planter fence in the back courtyard which then runs along adjacent to our wall on the stoned footpath in the shared large back paddock. See photo. This hasn't been a problem to any guest and we have our garden section roped off to walkers. There are thousands of these quirky footpaths throughout the Dales.....enjoy them directly from the back door!
