Welcome to Sunset Cottage! Enjoy a relaxing and serene getaway at this charming lakeside cottage which faces west and boasts beautiful evening sunsets that can be enjoyed from the screened in porch. The cottage is 2 bedroom, 1 bath and has an open kitchen and living space. This intimate setting allows you to enjoy the peacefulness of nature while still being close to historical Vermont towns.

Located 10 minutes north of Castleton and just under 30 minutes south of Middlebury, this cottage is in the perfect location for graduation weekend or enjoying a peaceful lake house getaway with your family/friends. The cottage is finished with an all pine interior boasting 12+ foot ceilings in the kitchen and living room areas. The front bedroom is furnished with two twin sized beds and the master bedroom overlooks the beautiful screened in porch and lake with a spacious king sized bed. The couch in the living room also folds into a queen sized bed if needed. Enjoy your morning coffee and evening glass of wine on the screened in porch which runs the full width of the house and has a porch swing as well as rocking chairs.

When you're here, we want you to feel at home so Sunset Cottage is equipped with all of the essentials. A Keurig coffee maker, kettle, numerous pots and pans, silverware, dishes, spices and oils, dish soap, sponges, towels (kitchen and bath), linens, and more. You only need to bring your personal items! If you are wondering if there is a specific item at the cottage please feel free to ask! At this time Sunset Cottage is not equipped with kayaks; however, you are welcome to bring your own kayaks, paddle boards, etc.

Sunset Cottage is remote; however, still equipped with the modern amenities you hope for. There is wireless available as well as a Smart TV (log into your own Netflix/Amazon/etc. accounts) and a DVD player is also available. There is a small library of DVDs you are welcome to utilize; however, we welcome you bringing your own in the event of a rainy day! There is not strong cell phone service at the cottage and a land line is provided (a rustic rotary phone in all its vintage charm!).

Sunset Cottage is located 2.5 miles north of Crystal Beach; a public beach for swimming and offers kayaks available to rent, picnic sites, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and docks for boating and fishing. Additionally there are numerous state parks close by if you're interested in walks/hikes through nature or just want to enjoy the scenery.

Other local attractions include multiple restaurants just minutes away in Castleton, a 5 minute drive to Bomossen Golf Club or take a drive into the town of Middlebury and enjoy local shops and restaurants.

Check-in is 3:00pm and check-out is 11:00am. The cottage is not fully winterized and currently open for rentals May - October. There is a small electric fireplace as well as heat pump which offers both heat and AC.

Note: the cottage is waterfront; however, this particular part of the lake has a significant amount of vegetation and is not ideal for swimming. It is a great spot for launching a kayak or for dogs to play in the water. For swimming accessibility we recommend checking out Crystal Beach 2.5 miles south of the cottage.

- "We really enjoyed our stay. It’s very quiet and peaceful. You don’t hear road traffic or people. I was impressed with how clean the house was. It is also well stocked with just about everything you could need, except an iron which I really needed. The water is great for dogs but definitely not for people. My only caution to others who may bring their dog is that the neighbors 2 dogs will come onto the property barking incessantly so if your dog is not dog friendly beware! We were told the neighbors have dogs but we were not expecting them to come onto the property alone and unsupervised. Luckily we avoided any troubles and kept our dog under control. This happened daily. This is no fault of the property owner so I still give 5 stars even though it added a little stress to an otherwise very peaceful stay. I still highly recommend."

Our 4 bedroom, 2 bath lake house sits on the east side of beautiful Lake Bomoseen with gorgeous morning views, all-day sun and shimmering water sunsets. Inside families, friends or couples can spread out in an open floor plan with dining room seating for 8, wrap around sectional in the living room and an upstairs with 3 bedrooms and an open area.

We have the best times with family & friends sitting around the table on the back deck overlooking the lake while we tend the grill and sit in the hot tub. Sometimes we move to the lower deck directly over the water to watch each other jump off the dock and swim. After a day playing on the lake we’ll enjoy smore’s at nighttime over the firepit in the back yard. In the winter after a day of nearby skiing at Killington, Pico or Okemo we love coming back to our cozy home, cooking a great meal and looking up at the stars from our hot tub. We also enjoy going to a couple of the fun & friendly local restaurants.

We’re next door to Crystal Beach with its playground, basketball court and beach/safe swimming for all ages including little ones. There is also great hiking nearby.

There is a rowboat, canoe and kayaks available for your use. We have a dock, if you wish to moor your boat. You are welcome to bring your small outboard engine to use on our skiff or there is a marina on the lake if you wish to rent something for water skiing or cruising the lake.
Float Bridge prevents vessels over 6 feet from the water from coming through, making for a quieter and safer family experience. A pool is available at the KOA campground; Crystal beach is also public(2024 $4adults 2 children/seniors).

WINTER travelers - This is Vermont - it snows thank goodness! We recommend an AWD or 4WD with good tires. Monitor the weather and plan travel accordingly. If the driveway has not been plowed, do not drive into it. Do not drive off the plowed surface, there is sand at the cottage and in the barrels on the road in the event there is ice.

We are close to great hiking and mountain biking trails, 4 ski resorts, historical sites, and parks.
The house is 30 minutes to Okemo Mountain Ski Resort, and 35 minutes to Killington and Pico Ski Resorts. The lake freezes solid usually between mid January to late March. It is active with skaters, cross country skiers, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

We are 4 miles to a Shaw's for groceries. Castleton has 5 restaurants, and nearby Fair Haven has a few as well. We are 20 minutes to Rutland with even more choices for dining out.

Wildlife here is amazing. Ducks, geese, eagles, muskrats, beaver, and blue herons are seen most days. It is a paradise for bird watching.

- "Wonderful time in Castleton. We went to the last day of the Vermont State Fair in Rutland. This cottage is a short and pleasant walk on dirt roads to Crystal Beach Park. This beach is wonderful for children as it has direct access to a beach/sand/swim area. The beach has picnic benches and bathroom facilities. There are two readily available restaurants nearby. The property is dog-friendly. There is a dock to launch your kayak. The porch has a view of the lake. The cottage is clean, compact and full of all the amenities you need including a washer and dryer. The pull-out couch was comfortable too. You feel very safe in this gated main house and cottage setting."

Lake Access & Swimming

Enjoy your own cleared 50' x 50' swim area — over 2,500 sq. ft. of weed-free water ideal for swimming, paddling, and lakeside fun.

You may notice some natural lake vegetation (including milfoil) beyond the cleared area — this is common for Lake Bomoseen. We participate in a state-permitted weed harvesting program each early summer to maintain clarity.

Floating weeds may occasionally drift to shore; a skimmer net is available for optional cleanup.

Guest Access:
Full access to the home, decks, dock, and yard
Some closets and the shed are locked for owner storage
Digital E-lock with unique code provided before arrival

Parking: Private driveway with ample space for multiple cars.

Max occupancy: 10 guests (strictly enforced due to well/septic system)

No pets allowed

Primary renter must be 25+ years old

Home uses a well water system – please be mindful of usage (1,200-gallon holding tanks + water-efficient fixtures installed)

Personal boats welcome! Dock available. Located north of Float Bridge Road — pontoon boats can pass under the bridge with canopies down; wake boats cannot.

- "We had a wonderful week at this house. Plenty of space for everyone to spread out. We loved all the decks that gave us both sun and shade in the afternoons so there was something for everyone. The only downside is the amount of seaweed in the lake. The town does come to try and clean it up but if you’re looking for a place to swim this isn’t it. You’d need a boat to go to the middle of the main lake for that or to go to the beach down the road ( for a fee)."
